SCOTT WEILAND Fires Back At MATT SORUM: 'Ego And Jealousy Can Get The Better Of Anyone'

VELVET REVOLVER frontman Scott Weiland has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:
"Responding to our drummer's [Matt Sorum] rant about why the band is in a state of flux:
"Well, first of all, the state of my family affairs is really none of his business, since he is too immature to have a real relationship, let alone children. So don't attempt to stand in a man's shoes when you haven't walked his path. Secondly, 'keeping rock 'n' roll alive?' I've made many attempts to remain cordial with the members of VR, but mainly, the likes of you. Funny though — this is your FIRST band, as opposed to being a hired gun. I've been making records (now on my ninth), which have sold over 35 million copies worldwide and have maintained a level of professionalism regardless of how many drugs I've ingested into my system. I have only cancelled one tour during the entire course of my 16-year run and that was the 'make-up' Australia tour. Now, shall I open that can of worms, Matthew? Release the Kraken? Serve... Volley! You cancelled the Aussie tour in the fall because you went to rehab, but I won't say why… we'll just let Blabbermouth find out for themselves.
"As for our fans — I will sweat, bruise, and bleed for you. And will continue to do so until the end of this tour. However, you deserve to hear VELVET REVOLVER playing… not certain individuals singing along to get a muddied up sound. God forbid — could one imagine if I grabbed a guitar and started soloing along with Slash? That would never happen because I know my place. It's a shame… we were a gang. But ego and jealousy can get the better of anyone. I wish the best and plan to annihilate the stage in the last few shows.
"On a separate note, we did an STP [STONE TEMPLE PILOTS] photo shoot before this tour and it was fun, inspiring and it gave me that thrill — that feeling that got my rocks off from the get-go."
According to several fan accounts and online media reports, Scott Weiland stunned fans at last night's (Thursday, March 20) VR concert in Glasgow, Scotland, UK by dropping a huge hint the band's time may be up.
He told the sell-out crowd: "You're watching something special... the last tour by VELVET REVOLVER."
In an online posting from earlier today, Matt Sorum stated about the Glasgow concert, "So last night was interesting. Had a little band turmoil on stage, as you probably all could tell.
"Being in a band is a lot like being in a relationship. Sometimes you just don't get along. I guess there has been more turmoil lately, I guess, with the cancellations and all. It has been frustrating, I am not going to lie.
"My career and life in rock 'n' roll has come with its ups and downs. Unfortunately, some people in this business don't realize how great of a life they have. Touring the world, meeting great people and fans all over the world. And just playing music for a living. I feel truly blessed. But sometimes the road can be draining for some. Being away from home and family does grind on you sometimes. With all the travelling and different beds. Personally, I love this shit and sometimes can’t believe I am so lucky to still be doing what I do for a living.
"Everybody could see who was unhappy last night, but all I can say is let's keep the rock alive, people!!!! In this life, you just pick up and keep moving. And don't ever let anybody stand in your way."
Weiland, who recently spent time in rehab at an undisclosed location, has struggled with substance abuse problems for more than a decade, although was reportedly clean for nearly four years until a few months ago. Questions about his condition flared in January when he missed a VELVET REVOLVER performance at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, claiming transportation problems.
Weiland will reunite with his STONE TEMPLE PILOTS bandmates for the first time this spring/summer for a number of shows, including an appearance at the Rock on the Range festival, to be held May 17-18 at Columbus, Ohio's Columbus Crew Stadium.

Dude, Adler may have been a druggie but his drumming gave early G'NR that swing, that uptempo backbeat that gave them that shake rattle and roll. When Adler took over he made the band sound thick and leaden, and they lost the swing.
Losing Adler and then Izzy was the death of that band musically. They brought a lot to the table.
At the end of the day what made that band great was the sum of its parts - and the fact that those 5 musicicans lived the life that they were singing about.

Scott can go back to his STP, do his shows, and that's the end of that. I do think they should carry on with a new singer. And honestly, why trade up headcases from Scott to Axl?
There is a dark horse new singer candidate that hasn't been mentioned yet...because he may or may not be a free agent...
Rumors are flying that Dark New Day has broken up, and if so, Brett Hestla would be available. Anyone who's listened to them knows he is a very underrated singer. Would he fit in with Slash, Duff, Sorum and...and...the other guy?

Sorum didn't even say anything that bad. It seemed like more of a damage control thing than a slant against Scott. Not sure why Scott would go off on something so insipid.
Whatever. I actually saw these guys a few months ago (despite not really being a fan). The show was okay, I guess, but it ranks nowhere near the top, especially not for the expensive price for the ticket.

Regardless who did what behind the scenes, we know this -
Sorum's interview was very kind to Weiland in comparison to how Weiland described Sorum in his response above.
Weiland has a LONG history of being a junkie dickhead. Sorum has a long history of being a reliable pro.
Weiland's reputation preceeds him, and now he's pissed about it because he KNOWS the people who are upset with him are right.
Fuck you, Weiland. You think going back to STP is going to solve all YOUR problems? Even if the grass IS greener on the other side, you'll still be an out of control junkie. Grow up, and I might be a fan again.

people come and go. these people are no better than you and me. there's people like me who want to promote the art that we create, and then there's people who would rather put their personalities in front of their art. It's a mechanism to sell tickets.
Don't buy into it. That's what Velvet Revolver was started as. I am a huge fan of the members, but don't think for one second that money was not the determining factor.

but Matt's words were pretty well chosen, and seemed, as Accident said, merely damage control.
Scott lost it for no reason, judging by what was quoted above as being Matt's word's that prompted this silly business.

you may have only cancelled 1 tour, but you FUCKED up and got passed over for the KISS reunion tour in '96 and one of the bands you guys "borrowed" your sound from got it.....a little known band called ALICE IN CHAINS!!!!!!
How funny is that???? You were such a FUCKUP, Orange Juice Boy, that someone who had a worse drug problem got to play a dream tour. Although, I think KISS just used the drug excuse and went with the SUPERIOR band....because Alice In Chains kicked your guys asses. Nothing you ever wrote could touch 'DIRT'.

Matt Sorum has been a respected, consistent musician for decades, has worked well with very volatile personalities, and has been in not one but three high-profile bands. Weiland has a reputation of being a complete jerk, has a very inflated ego, behaves erratically, sells out his own bandmates and throws temper tantrums.
Oh, and if we're talking about tantrums and childish behavior...kids aren't for everyone, and since almost everyone in the world who has hit puberty is biologically capable of having them, they're not really a sign of accomplishment or maturity. Not to mention that drug addicts and out of control egotists don't usually win the Parent of the Year awards, ya know.
This is for the best, really. Weiland's the weak link in VR, his vocal abilities aren't exactly unique and he's embarrassing to watch onstage. They're far better off without him and his drama. Let them find a real singer and prosper and let Weiland run himself into the ground with STP. We'll see how long that takes.

Man please, Weiland is the reason the the great STP fuggin' tanked, and I bet that any of his ex bandmates would be lying if they didn't agree. I'm just a fan of STP, not an in the know person by any means. I just know that during the 'Purple thru Shangri La phase of their career, they NEVER TOURED! Wonder why. Could it be that Weiland was and is a fuggin' train wreck? That skinny piece of shit has been given more chances than he deserves. I was fucking shocked and disappointed when I read the roster of great vocalists that Slash and Duff turned down in favor of Weiland to front VR and even more shocked and disappointed when I heard Contraband! BORING!! That cd and Libertad are just disappointing and boring. The STP reunion will last about as long as his latest tour w/VR. He's a joke.

Tim Owens would be a better singer for VR than Scott Weiland. The guy is underrated IMO anyway. Oh, and I love Stone Temple Pilots, but Scott was not right for Velvet Revolver at all. He is an asshole junkie as well and I don't expect much from the STP tour. I can still enjoy STP's music though.
Scotty boy is part of a ring of other well known asshole singers like Axl Rose and Phil Anselmo. I'd like to see a fight between all three of them. I'd be willing to bet that Phil would rip both of their heads off and shit down their necks.

Well, Weiland auditioned and was hired for VR, he wasn't part of the original creative process in forming the band. So is he a "hired hand" too?
Yes, Matt came in as a replacement in The Cult and Guns N' Roses. So? He came into both bands when they were at the zenith of their careers--before the Sonic Temple and Illusion tours--and was able to learn a lot of songs, jump into monster touring machines very quickly, and not piss everyone off in the process. The Cult liked him enough that he was asked back when they reformed in 2001 and still speak highly of him, and he's apparently the one member of VR with whom Axl Rose has actually patched things up. He's been far more professional and displayed a lot more maturity in his life and career than Weiland could ever aspire to.

Not that Scott will ever read this but, I know for a fact you really don't care all that much for your fans. I have tried to meet you many times. You blew me & other fans off by saying you don't do Ebay. How lame is that? One autograph or picture for like 3 people would have killed you I'm sure. All the other guys have always been super cool, but you every single time turn out to be an ass. Matt is one hell of a guy. I've seen him be 100% times better of a human being than you ever will be. Sounds like a GNR reunion is happeneing! Scott got to personal what a scum bag. At least Matt was fucking professional and apologized for weiland's shit... I have seen VR 3 times now there were 2 good concerts and the last one I saw was shit. Ive been backstage at every show and that dipshit wouldnt even stick around to meet the fans (who I may mention were young kids around 8-15 years old)... Hes always leaving and making a huge scene like someone proposed a death threat, while the rest of the band hang out talk to people and sign shit!... Fuck him fuck Velvet Revolver and bring on the Guns N' Roses Reunion!!!

He even let us record it (covers, Cult, AC/DC).

Huh, what, pardon? For a start, calling it a "make-up" tour makes it sound like it wasn't that important (tell that to the Australian fans). And, second, it got cancelled BECAUSE SCOTT WAS IN REHAB! How is that professional?
Also, his memory might be failing - didn't the 12 Bar Blues tour get cut short for the same reason?
I couldn't care less about Matt Sorum - always preferred Steven Adler - but he's clearly in the right here

Exhibit A: Matt Sorum. Definitely a tool. No doubt about it. But a money grubber who knows when to be diplomatic when it's in his interests.

2.why do you travel on a seperate tour bus?

4.why did you ignore me outside newcastle academy 10 mins before showtime? i said hello scott would you mind signing my programme.your reply-just let me in the #ucking venue. i travelled 200miles to try meet you after id spent £400 in petrol, gig tickets,meet and greats etc etc....went to leeds and manchester meet and great and you didnt show up.

Mighty Joe Young was the name of STP before a record company stiff grabbed them. They sounded like the Chili Peppers except more like shit. The label made STP, dressed them, and said "write songs like Pearl Jam, we need a hit." Weiland has never been original, and is only what he was made into by some suit. He is lucky that he remembers his own name. Nothing about that is Rock and Roll! How much of that money does he have left after all the smack, crack, and blow that he has done?
Arrogant, talentless, waste of air. He doesn't deserve to stand on the same stage as this band. He is a self serving prick, who thinks he is above everyone.
FUCK OFF!
And as for the band, it doesn't matter who they get to sing, anyone would be an improvement, and they deserve better!

I saw AIC open for VR! AIC stole the show and they only played for fortyfive minutes, VR was so boring after a few songs, I didnt even stay the whole gig. I love Slash but honestly this band just did not flow.

The Tiger Stadium show kicked ass. I was geeked when I heard they were gonna put on Kissology 3.
Yeah, you could tell Layne wasn't gonna last long, the guy was whiter than the makeup on KISS's face. But he gave one HELLUVA performance.....this concert STILL ranks in my top 5 of all-time(getting to see Sponge, AIC and the original 4 KISS members).
Like I said.....I don't think it came down to the drug aspect, because as we saw, Layne didn't look healthy.....KISS chose the BETTER band.

The Cult have NEVER had a steady drummer. Of COURSE Sorum wasn't their first - they started in England, and he's American. But he was their LONGEST term drummer, right up until John Tempesta (also great) who's now got about the same tenure under his belt with the Cult.
When GnR was the BIGGEST band in the world, they decided to cut Adler loose, and of the MILLIONS who would have killed for the gig, Sorum got it.
Now, in Velvet Revolver -- SORUM was an original member, and the junkie tool Weiland was the LAST guy to make the band.
Any jerkoff calling Sorum anything along the lines of a scab/replacement needs to consider this - he's either a top-notch professional, or he's won the rock-n-roll drummer's lottery 3 or 4 times now on sheer dumb luck.
Something tells me there's more to it than that. Great skill is rare enough, and still only gets yuo in the door, as there are always some others who can cut it, too. A good REPUTATION goes a LONG way in this business. You MUST have both to accomplish what Sorum has in his career.

Who cares if Matt isn't married? Some people are just happier being on their own, and if I had the opportunity to travel the world, party and sleep around like he does, I likely wouldn't want to settle down right now either. If anything it's probably a good thing he didn't feel the need to get married for the sake of doing it then subjecting his wife to sitting at home while he lives the lifestyle he lives anyway. That's probably why the divorce rate is so high, people think they HAVE to get married so even if they arn't sure, they go along with it, only to find out years later they can't possibly continue living like this...

Matt sounds like he just wants all to get along and enjoy this, while Scott seems to want to toot his own horn and convince us we should side with him because he's just so great, as he kindly points out to us. I actually like the band. They arn't GNR or STP, but I enjoy most of their music. I don't know if there someone I'd go out of my way to catch on a tour like I would GNR, or NIN, but I like them...
And I don't see how this could lead to a GNR reunion. Even if they all somehow agreed to work together tomorrow, what happens to the current GNR? Or the album? I don't think the record company is going to give them more money to record a "real GNR" album while their $14 million Chinese Democracy goes unreleased.

Writing as somone who was there with stp on the core, pruple, and tiny music tours, I can say there were plenty of shows that never happened due to ol SW. There wre way ore show offers that were turned odown because the band and their management knew Sw would let them down- and he did. And stp never toured for more than 8 weeks at a time because they never had the stamina of other bands that could stay on the road for months at a time. Purple tour? That was a whopping 8 weeks of some of the ost fun I have ever had working on tour. But the band pulled the plug when they were kings of the world and could have easily made the jump to multiple nights at all the venues they were playing. If those guys were willing to work they could have stayed out on tour for a solid 6 or 8 months just in the states working the purple cd. But SW was so predictbly unpredictable, they were lucky to just do the 8 weeks. What a waste! Too many people around the band who did not have their best interests and were looking to make a buck while they could. If band and mgmgt had honestly looked at what Sw was doing to himself and the band, and been men about getting hte guy real help earlier, they might have had a chance of extending their career and truly making their mark. Oh well...no one forced them to be rock musicians. It all comes with the territory. Either let it consume you and ruin your life and career-or dont.

As a STP fan since day one and a VR fan and just a SW fan in general I can say I give up. The dude has done nothing but get arrested and go to rehab over and over again and continues to fuck up every project he has ever been in. In every interview I have read in the last few years he comes off as some asshole prick... I thought it was just the media but now its his own band mates. Sure the VR dudes had some heat with Matt but come on to lash out at him like that when he just did some simple damage control statement with nothing personal to Scott is insane. Scott if you don't get your shit straight for good you will end up broke or dead trust me. Scott Weiland can go back to STP no one cares. VR (ie slash, duff, MATT, and dave) can go back to finding another singer. He's not the only one out there. I for one knew scott was just another axl (prima donna full of bs). I always thought they could do better than him anyways.

These guys have given their fuckin lives to creating great fuckin music and a bunch of comments by dumb impotent girlie assholes saying stuff like "Scotts voice sounds like when I flush my toilet" will not fuckin' faze em one bit.. If these guys (and I also mean Weiland) are professionals, they will handle it on their own. They have produced two different but awesome albums. Scott probably just hand a hard night at the drugs. But I truly believe that the band will settle this and move on to produce more kick ass music and Weiland will finally get of the drugs. Matt sounds like he was covering for Scott and Scott was probably high when he said it was the end and posted his response. Like the song "Headspace" they can make it and they will last, so stop saying so much shit about them and leave them to fixing their problems and allow them to produce many more kick ass songs. Good luck Scott and good luck Velvet Revolver. I look forward to seeing album number three.

OK first, I'm a huge fan of Weiland STP and VR. However, Matt has had the raw end of the deal with lead singers turning into head cases. First, with The Cult, when Astbury became God's gift and let his ego derail their rise to the top, just to hand over the keys to Guns and Roses. Luckily Sorum was already on board with GNR by this time but within two year Axl lost his fucking mind and destroyed the band of the decade. Then finally with VR it looked like he should finally get his due and now Weiland's self absorbed maniacal excuses he's on the verge of fucking up one of the last great bands with a shot at saving Rock N Roll. Quit being a pussy Scott, finish the record and get your ass back out on the road. It's all the time alone that's fucking with your head.

You don't even know the guy. You never met him. How can you feel so much hate for someone you never met? Someone you only know about through magazines, websites and records?

He says all is fine on the home front, and that he and Mary are "just a little bit nuts."
Back at the office, McKagan said the band operates in a complex working environment. "There's big egos in this band. It could implode at any time."
McKagan is fairly relaxed by rock-star standards, but he was a tad saddened that his backing vocals and songwriting expertise were not required by Weiland, who prefers to handle all those things himself.
In Guns N' Roses, McKagan and guitarist Izzy Stradlin wrote the melodies and lyrics for such songs as "Paradise City" and "It's So Easy." He even sang lead on one song, "So Fine."
"It's a weird thing for me to really talk about because it's not like I'm bummed out about it, really," McKagan says of the new arrangement. "We had to make compromises."======

Scott, Don't listen to most of these people! VR was an okay band, but it just doesn't compare to STP. Especially on the 2nd album! You are one of the most influencial frontmen of our time. I put STP and Alice In Chains on the same level. Leaning more towards STP becuase you are still kick'n! There is still time man! Thank God for the STP reunion! Get out there and prove Rock is still real. Get the boyz from STP and put out a record that can shut all these GNR (who had 1 good album) fans who also probably like Fall Out Boy the fuck up! DO IT!

I saw VR last night, scott weiland was amazing, attacking the stage just like he said he would, outstanding, jim morrison, mick jagger and freddie mercury rolled into one.
Still his little rant against matt sorum seemed over the top, to say the least, what is about really talented lead singers, they always have to start shit with their bandmates.
If they do break up, then its a tragedy as they are the only band I can think of that play good old fashioned hard rock these days.
On the other hand I take massive consolation from the fact that STP might be reforming! Rock on!

As a long time fan of VR and STP, I must say I disagree with Scott Weiland's comments about how he treats his fans. Twice I paid a large amount of money to go backstage at the VR shows in Minneapolis, and twice ALL band members were present...except Scott. His commitment to his biggest fans left me disappointed, and feeling stupid that TWICE I spent additional money to meet him. No sweat, bruises, or blood anywhere. I still love ya, Scott...but perhaps its time to step back and think about where you'd be without us.

VR is a great band. STP is a great band. GNR is a great band. Scott is a consumate frontman and made those guys more relelavent. They would not have sold the numbers they did wiith someobody else. Now what? I'm also sad army of anyone didn't take off. The deleos need to sell records. Had they done so with AofA, would they really be bringing this guy back with all his anger, and personal issues? Are we doing this guy any favors here? Sure he'll stay rich...but some people can't handle the touring lifestyle and stay clean/sane. I worry that scott is one tour away from some serious irrecoverable health issues. I wish everybody luck with this. Especially Scott
