OBITUARY: U.S. Tour Cancelled - Mar. 26, 2008

Legendary Florida death metallers OBITUARY have issued the following update:

"We regret to inform you for reasons beyond our control we must cancel this May tour. We wanna thank everyone for their hard work and dedication for this tour and we WILL reschedule this for September 2008... Look for updates."

OBITUARY's May tour was scheduled to include DYING FETUS, ORIGIN and THY WILL BE DONE.

A rare OBITUARY track, entitled "Executioner Returns", has been posted on the group's MySpace page. The song originally appeared on the limited-edition digipack version of the Florida-based death metal band's latest CD, "Xecutioner's Return", which came out last year.

"Xecutioner's Return" was mixed at Redroom Recorders and was mastered in June at Morrisound Studios in Tampa. The band once again worked with artist Andreas Marschall, who has previously created the art for "The End Complete" and the group's last record, "Frozen in Time".

Roadrunner Records recently released a "best-of" collection from OBITUARY, entitled, appropriately enough, "The Best of Obituary".

	With the out-of-control fuel prices spiraling upwards, it is going to get more and more difficult for artists/bands to balance touring and keeping ticket prices within a reasonable range for the fans. Artist are stuck in the precarious position of either not touring or forcing promoters/venues to charge more for tickets to cover higher guarantees for the artists to cover the high cost of touring. Unfortunately, fans don't seem to understand (or even care) about all the costs involved in touring, so either an artist has to suck-it-up and break-even or risk losing money, or ask for higher ticket prices to cover the increased cost of touring and risk the backlash from ungrateful and ignorant fans. Worst of all, these days there is no (or very, very minimal) tour support from labels available to artists who want to tour.

	Yay for blind speculation. Gas is almost twice as expensive in Europe as it is in America. A band like Obituary isn't sweating an extra 25 bucks a night in gas too hard. There is a lot more to the economics of touring than gas prices and ticket prices. Merch is king.

	Merch is king. How do you think all those bands can afford to play Gigantour? Only Megadeth and the next one or two bands on the bill are making any real money. The rest of the bands don't make dick and hope to sell a hundred or so shirts at $30 a pop to generate some profit. You have to give props to a lot of these bands who are out there doing this for pretty much the love of playing. Because let's face it, there isn't much more to play for these days.

	Aren't y'all glad you voted Dubya n' Dick into the White House???? Unfortunately, there is a HUGE price to pay for our ignorance and complacency. We had an EXCELLENT candidate in Ron Paul. Our country could have also benefited tremendously from a Dennis Kucinich or Mike Gravel presidency. We blew it again, as the sheeple all voted for the mass media hype CFR candidates. Enjoy your $4 per gallon gas !! I can assure you it will go up to $6 or $7 within 1-2 years time....thanks to your elected officials.

	it's not a fair comparison between US and Euro gas prices, because our Dollar is fuckin worthless, so of course the conversion comes out to approx. double per gallon. Europeans earn more money than Billy and Bobby Joe do @ the Piggly Wiggly. However, they are feelin' the pinch too. Globalization's a bitch, huh???

	touring IS fuckin expensive. If you don't believe it, then I suggest you give it a whirl. For many years, if a tour was managed properly....expenses would not exceed 50-60% of gross. So, the profit margin was between 40-50%. Fuel has TRIPLED in the past few years, and touring in the USA means LOTS of fuel costs due to long drives between markets. Bus rental prices have skyrocketed as a result. So..........as fans keep trying to justify stealing the work of their favorite artists via illegal downloading, the bands try to eek out a living for themselves on the road. Now, road profits are dwindling too.

	Cupid- A lot of merch prices on tours like that are not up to opening bands. Do you think a band like Megadeth would have shirts for $30 and let an opener sell theirs for $10? They aren't going to let themselves be undersold like that. Also keep in mind the house usually gets a cut of the merch sales on huge tours like this. Killuall, first off, I do tour. I know how expensive it is. Here are the facts: Even with the devaluation of the dollar, gas is still much more expensive in Europe. They're paying $5 to $7 dollars per gallon in US dollars. As I said, merch is king. You can't download a shirt. Gloria Estefan has sold just as many CDs as Kiss. Want to guess who has made more total money? Come on, you can buy a KISS COFFIN. There are just certain things you can't get away with anymore. You have to book and route more efficiently. Do it the RIGHT way in the planning stages and you'll be fine. You can't just haphazardly "go on tour" anymore without losing your ass. But if you know all the little tricks and how to plan, it can still be just as profitable.

	Where did it say profitability was the reason for cancelling this tour? I enjoyed reading some of the comments, but nowhere did it give a reason for cancelling. Maybe there is an illness. Maybe there are legal problems (Obituary has faced these before.) There could be many reasons. They said they are rescheduling for Septmeber. I doubt they would plan on that if gas prices are the reason. WE all know gas will probably be MORE expensive in September.

	This sucks for Thy Will Be Done, these put on a awesome live show, they are really nice guys and there merch is super cheap. These guys have more heart than alot of bands out there today. If you haven't heard there album you are missing out on some greatness!!!!

	...their manager and rep from Extreme Management Group is unexpectedly on his deathbed, thus causing Obituary to cancel the tour.
