MESHUGGAH Explains Calgary Show Cancellation - Mar. 29, 2008
Swedish experimental extreme metallers MESHUGGAH have issued the following update:

"Ahhh, not so awesome beginning of the C U LaTouR [with MINISTRY and HEMLOCK]! We just wanna say we're sorry [to] you guys who came out to the Calgary show especially!

"The routing/distances for this tour was insane for the first couple shows and us being stuck at the U.S/Canada border for a few hours meant we didn't make it in time for the Calgary show!

"For the first Vancouver show at the Croatian culture center — same thing! Too far a drive to actually make it in time, so everything was way delayed which in turn meant that we had to cut the set real short! Three songs!! How's that for a MESHUGGAH set!!? Kinda embarrasing, but things were out of our hands!! We were there in time but the semi with all the stage gear was very late and with a 11 p.m curfew....

"Basically, the start of this tour was just routed insanely and as for the rest of the tour, we shouldn't run into these issues.

"So again, we apologize to those of you who came out to the shows to see us, only to find we didn't play or as for the Vancouver show — only played for 15 minutes!"

MESHUGGAH drummer Tomas Haake told Petri Silas of Finland's Soundi magazine in an interview that was conducted on February 3, 2008 that he will soon undergo surgery for an impingement of the shoulder. According to a Nuclear Blast Records spokesperson, Tomas' surgery will take place following the completion of the band's current tour and none of the dates on the trek will be affected.

MESHUGGAH's latest album, "obZen" sold 11,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 59 on The Billboard 200 chart. This is substantially more than the 7,000 first-week total achieved by its predecessor, "Catch 33", which landed at No. 170 on The Billboard 200 chart back in June 2005.

An e-card for "obZen" can be accessed at this location.

So, the last band out, first band in, was able to make it from one city to the next for the shows, but the opening bands, who have their gear packed before MINISTRY even finishes performing, can't get there in time for their sets.

Sounds like poor planning on the road manager's part and illogical excuses from the band. Regardless of the hassels you likely will encounter crossing from the US into Canada, there was enough time to get from Spokane, WA to Calgary Alberta (10-to-11 hours of drive time + the anticipated 4 hrs for the border crossing). Had the bus pulled-out of the Spokane venue at midnight, they should be able to reach the venue by 5pm. Of course it is a very undesirable situation, but it can be done.

COMMENT | Not like they didn't have the routing months ago, nor is it their first tour of North America

Morgan played on the "Sol Niger Within" album by Fredrik Thordendal, he's a very famous swedish jazz drummer, he could replace Haake adequately, he's truly out of this world, here he is jamming with Fredrik:

heh, its why they got held up at the border.

I went to both Vancouver show's actually, Meshuggah DESTROYED both times even though they only did 3 songs the first night. Ministry puts on one hell of a show as well.

It has nothing to do with this. Ministry is from America, so they cross the borders pretty easy. Meshuggah on the other hand is from Europe, and it's a pain in the ass for anyone from oversea to cross the border, because of the U.S. goverment paranoia since the 9-11 attacks.

Also, before anyone bashes me by saying that they werecrossing the border to Canada, well Canada now apply the same BS border rules than the Americans since the new Prime-minister is the number one George Bush ass licker...

I've had very smooth border crossings with Germans, Swedes, Norweigans, French, English, etc. I've had extremely tedious and frustrating crossings with an all American touring party. The hassle of crossing has much, much less to do with the country of origin as it does with the advance, the background of the individuals traveling, and the attitude of the person doing the screening.

Ministry has several people in their touring entourage with criminal records and hardcore drug histories. The Canadian's are notorious for denying entry for these very reasons. And just because one border crossing was smooth, doesn't necessarily mean that one a month later will be without hassle.

So, faithnomore4ever, don't make comments on topics you obviously have little experience with.

And just for your information, I've never missed a show because of a delay at the border, no matter how much bullshit the border personnel threw at us.
