Will VELVET REVOLVER Continue Without SCOTT WEILAND? - Mar. 30, 2008
Classic Rock's Jerry Ewing recently spoke to VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash for an article that will be published in the issue that goes on sale on April 30. A couple of excerpts from the story follow:

Slash: I was talking with Robert Plant the other night and he was casually naming certain ZEPPELIN songs and then in the same breath who it was ripped off from.

Classic Rock: Did GUNS N' ROSES ever get taken to court for allegedly ripping anyone off?

Slash: No. One of the things about myself and the other members of GUNS N' ROSES, with the exception of maybe Izzy [Stradlin], 'cause he was maybe a bit more freeform, was that we were huge sticklers for anything that sounded like anything else. Straight off the bat if you played a few chords and it really reminded you of something else we scrapped it. It's very different with VELVET REVOLVER. Even though myself and Duff [McKagan] are the same way, and Matt [Sorum], Scott [Weiland] will rip something. We'll be like, "No, we can't do that," and he'll be like, "Oh, go on, let's do it," and we'll do it.

Classic Rock: Going back to VELVET REVOLVER, there's been a lot said on the Internet between Scott and Matt. What's the current state of play?

Slash: We've got six shows, ha-ha.

Classic Rock: How do you deal with that stuff flying around?

Slash: I have no comment. Obviously I'm very aware of everything that's going on. The only thing I can add to that is, in contrast to what Scott says, there will be a VELVET REVOLVER after this tour.

Classic Rock: With Scott singing?

Slash: I have no comment on that [chuckles].

what they'll probably end up doing is goin on that horrid rockstar show to find a subpar replacement who will work for peanuts.

cornell and the baz would be lowering themselves to jump on this ship.

i'd be happy with a new stp record myself.

Josh Todd of Buckcherry fame in the band instead. Personally, I am not keen on Scott Weiland as a singer and even less so as a man. I find his stage presence and vocal performance weak and he doesn't know how to whip up a crowd. Look at any You Tube vid of the European festivals that VR have played and the crowd looks bemused by the guy. At least Axl Rose keeps the crowd on there toes with the way he performs. I say if Weiland goes get Josh Todd in. Seb Bach won't do it because of his friendship with Axl, so lets be serious and name someone suitable.

Josh Todd should be the singer in VR. oK Buckcherry may have sold well in the US but worldwide VR are bigger. I think if they asked him (considering he was thee original choice before Weiland) he may reconsider especially if he could do both bands. That would be my pitch, but if they go with Weiland good luck to them.

It's not going to be Josh Todd. In Slash's book, he says that they thought Todd just didn't sound right with the band. I believe they actually said he was out of tune. There's absolutely no way Todd is leaving Buckcherry right now. Relatively speaking, their last album was a huge success.

Plus, call me crazy, but Todd is very reminiscent of Axl as a singer and frontman. I think part of the reason they went with Weiland in the first place is because they didn't want to be accused of sounding like GNR.

Someone mentioned John Bush earlier, I think that'd be a good choice. He's not up himself so he'd most likely get on with the bandmembers, he sounds and looks nothing like Axl (which is why Weiland got the job in the first place), and most importantly - he's got an amazing set of pipes!

Mr. Weiland...whether he's alone or in a band, he will continue to be Scott Weiland. He doesn't NEED anyone!! He is who he is, he loves who he is(and i must agree with him there) and he's having fun(please Mr. Weiland...STAY CLEAN) doing it. Amen to that!!

I was really proud of this band. I was proud that you have two sides of the coin forming one sound. In one hand you have grunge music and the other hand you have the 80s hair band rock your heart out sound. For two albums they formed a beautiful sound and kept rock alive. I am sure both parties will be sucessfull in the future. I will see STP and rumor has it that Weiland could possibly be leaning towards a new CD with his former grunge mates. I believe Slash will take a breath and reflect while playing gutair hero III. Honestly, Bach is a cool guy and good frontman but Slash was worried that they sounded too much like Skid Row. VR really needs to be selective when choosing their new singer. I really believe Cris Cornell still has what it takes to slam down some serious vocals and write some hard core lyrics. Be cool guys, it has been a fun ride.
