OPETH: 'Watershed' Artwork Revealed - Mar. 30, 2008
The cover artwork for "Watershed", the forthcoming album from Swedish metallers OPETH, can be viewed at this location. The cover was (as usual) designed by Travis Smith in co-operation with frontman/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt.

"Watershed" is scheduled for release on June 3 via Roadrunner Records (one day earlier internationally). The CD, recorded in the band's native Sweden and produced by frontman/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt and Jens Bogren, is a masterwork that follows the time-honored OPETH tradition; its modern yet timeless, progressive yet paying homage to the sounds of classic rock.

"Watershed" track listing:

01. Coil
02. Heir Apparent
03. The Lotus Eater
04. Burden
05. Porcelain Heart
06. Hessian Peel
07. Hex Omega

All the songs were written by Åkerfeldt apart from "Porcelain Heart", which was co-written with new guitarist Fredrik Åkesson. One additonal track, "Derelict Herds", was also recorded and this was written by Mikael Åkerfeldt and Per Wiberg. On top of this, three cover songs were recorded. "Bridge of Sighs" from ROBIN TROWER's 1974 LP of the same title, "Den Ständiga Resan" (sung in Swedish) by MARIE FREDRIKSSON as well as the classic ALICE IN CHAINS song "Would?"

The album was recorded at Fascination Street studios during November 1 and December 13. Some additional recording was done between January 3 and January 7.

Says Mikael Åkerfeldt: "I've worked so hard with these songs for quite some time now, I've listened to 'em a zillion times. I don't hate them just yet! The album sounds great sonically and I think I can hear us evolving as the record plays on. It is taking us somewhere musically and I don't know where. It's very exciting to say the least! I can't remember having enjoyed a recording this much ever before."

OPETH performed a new song, "Heir Apparent", on March 8 during their appearance on the 21st anniversary Schizoid Boat in honor of Mellotronen's birthday.

cocksmokers.

OPETH RULEZ. They could use photo of turd and it would be awesome anyway. You guys see the cover out of its physical context.

A pdf booklet sucks, that's why I like to have the finished product in my hands. Creativity with paper and ink. The touch, the smell.

WILL WAIT FOR THE DIGIPAK VERSION OF WATERSHED THOUGH

that cover growls Opeth to its very core...i find it actually kind of scary, like what is that dude huddled over? is it a dead baby? or the Necronomicon?...astounding

I actually don't really like that cover.. fits the whole Opeth vibe but I find that one kind of boring compared to some of the past ones. Either way, I can't wait to hear this album and see them in Calgary twice!

Looks to me like a person sitting at a desk in front of a window. At least as far as I can tell. I like the cover. It's got a nice vibe to it; as do their prior covers. It's Opeth; that's all that matters.

Well, it's certainly not what I imagined it would be, but I'll try not to judge a book by its cover (so to speak). This album is going to rock anyway!

Blabbermouth people ...

seriously ... cover art is a small fraction of what a band releases all of you are bitching about the cover when it's the music that speaks for itself ... ghost revaries, orchid, damnation, deliverance, bwp ... they all had very plain covers .. but the musics destroys, and dominates...it's not like you'll buy it anyways you'll probably download it .. and never see the cover.

when seeing this cover was dissapointment. Opeth used outdoor pictures for their first 5 album covers, with Deliverence and everything after being indoor pictures. With an album title like "Watershed," I was hoping they'd switch back to outdoor with a nice lake scene or soemthing.

Then I used my imagination a bit, and now I give you my personal interpretation of this album cover: The year is 1956, and a man is sitting at his desk in front of his window in the town of Flagstaff, which is being flooded to create a resovior. The town has been evacuated, but this man has decided to stay in his home and drown in protest. There he waits, for the water to rise and take his life.

I am definitely listening to this album before diving to the ghost town at the bottom of Flagstaff lake this summer.

Damn, InvertedMoongoat!!!!

What a freakin' imagination! Cool story!

Well, i don't like the cover. The concept is great, but the colours are awfull, and also the album title font is similar to the one used by My Dying Bride on A Line of Deathless Kings.

I hope the music is killer, but it will be difficult to top Ghost Reveries.

Cheerz

Interesting artwork: it reveals very little and remains open to interpretation. Maybe Opeth could consider working with someone else next time, though... Travis Smith has a style very its own but there,s also a lot of bands using him for their covers these days (or there's tons of people copying his style). I always felt that real photographic work would fit Opeth real well; something like old 70s obscure pics using washed colors and contrast...

Looking forward to this next album!

Not really what I was expecting, It seems kind of dull to tell the truth IMO. But, that doesnt mean just because the cover isn't all too interesting that the music won't be. Whats up with the, "If you dont like the artwork you dont like Opeth" shit? First of all YES the artwork for an album should be decent for someone to see, because you want the album to give you the vibe. But second of all, just because someone doesn't like the artwork doesn't mean they dislike the band, that is false and totally irrational. Although Opeth rules and many fans should like the artwork outside of the music doesn't mean that they HAVE to like it or else the band sucks to them. Sorry but that is an incredibly stupid statement.
