SLIPKNOT: First Glimpse At New Masks

Des Moines, Iowa-based metal giants SLIPKNOT have offered the first glimpse (sort of) at the new series of masks which the band will don on the upcoming Rockstar Energy Mayhem festival, set to kick off July 9 at the White River Amphitheatre in Seattle. Check out the new "shadowy" photo on the splash page of the band's official web site. When asked if the oversized, Easter Island–looking masks were in fact an April Fools' Day joke, an unnamed executive at the band's record label, Roadrunner Records, assured BLABBERMOUTH.NET that it is "100% real." According to HMV.co.uk, Roadrunner Records has set an August 11 UK release date (one day later in the U.S.) for the much-anticipated new SLIPKNOT album. The as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2004's "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)" is being recorded with producer Dave Fortman, who has previously worked with MUDVAYNE and EVANESCENCE. Joining SLIPKNOT and DISTURBED on the main stage of the first-ever Rockstar Energy Mayhem festival will be DRAGONFORCE and MASTODON. In addition, the tour will have two second stages: one sponsored by Jägermeister and featuring AIRBOURNE, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, 36 CRAZYFISTS and the Jägermeister Battle of The Bands Winner. An additional second stage will feature MACHINE HEAD, BLACK TIDE, SUICIDE SILENCE, THE RED CHORD, and WALLS OF JERICHO. SLIPKNOT percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan recently told Revolver magazine that the masked nine-piece from Iowa is coming from a "different place" as it prepares to record its fourth major label album. When asked what has changed since "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)", Crahan replied, "I can't stress enough that we're going into this from a different place. When we did (2001 album) 'Iowa', we hated each other. We hated the world; the world hated us. The next record ( 'Vol. 3') was like rehabilitation. We had all this healing that needed to happen. Now, everything feels good because we feel good." SLIPKNOT went on hiatus at the end of 2005, when it finished touring in support of "Vol. 3". Since then the band members have worked on various other projects, including a second album from singer Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root's STONE SOUR. Crahan said, "These breaks that we take, they get our appetites going. They let our brains slow down and then speed up again. We gotta decompress for a little bit just to feel human if we're going to be forced to be here in this reality."

...i probably outgrew this band a long time ago when they outgrew actually playing something heavy. and i doubt those masks are the real deal. if so, oh slipknot you've dropped yet another notch. for sooth!

Clam down children. You cant see anything anyway so how can you comment on how 'shit' they look. Irrelevant to what masks they are wearing, if the album is anything like vol 3 its worth buying. And if you dont like them then dont bother opening up the thread, if i see a bon jovi thread i dont go reading it, or making 'cool' comments on it.

i think the masks look rediculous and ive followed them their entire career. im just going with the notion that it is indeed an april fools joke.
to re-iterate what someone said up there the people talking shit because of their masks will probably be the same people that support black metal bands that wear the stupid corpse paint. its all image and its all theatrics.
everyone with common sense knows that metal among other things is about image. dont say it isnt because if you saw that your favorite death metal band or black metal band or whatever started dressing like pop stars you'd immediately call them sell outs, why? because they changed their image. at least the knot is sticking with their gimmick instead of selling out and losing the masks just because everyone else hates them.

take a moment and think about why the do it. a) it limits how many people recognize them so that they can have a somewhat real life (other than corey and jim obviously) and b) they do it cuz its fucking crazy, ive seen em twice and it adds to the spectacle that is their show. the energy they can bring to an arena is rediculous, and to the post about people taking them seriously, they really could fucking care less. other than devildriver, these guys have the best moshpits ive seen.

I Hope that was an attempt at sarcasm. Talk about gimmicks and "Real Metal".
On another note I think the best mask Slipknot ever wore were the clear face looking masks with the black facepaint beneath them. But enough of them have been unmasked that i think it's time to just try it unmasked.

and for the record I dont hate Slipknot. Just sucks because Corey lost his insane voice, leaving Joey as the only talented person left. Mick is good though.
They were one of the bands that helped me transition into death and black metal aka "real metal". So I thank them for that.
I think it would be sweet if they fucked with everyone and released a pure technical death metal album or something.

IT IS APRIL FOOLS MORONS!!! These are not going to be the real masks... and who cares anyways its Slipknot... as for killing the American Metal Culture? I would say that goes to a lot of the Swedish Melodic Death metal bands since a majority of the American metal bands that are popular rip them off but sound a million times shittier at doing it. To be honest Europe has always been more open minded to metal and its various forms and now America seems to be catching on to the idea that there is a lot of variety in metal and not just the same sound. If anything American Metal Culture is improving.

When lightened up in photoshop, the masks actually look like the Marionette masks from the russian movie adaptation of Dr. Faustus. They're actually charachatures of the band members. Mick's mask looks like mick, just in a distorted and mutilated way, using that overblown puppetry focus on facial details. Think Howdy Doody.
And I realize I took the time to do this and that means I'm lame. Oh well. Back to work.

This is the starting page to reveal the masks during the next periode, because what you see right now is nothing more than there real faces with a slide of cartoon caracter over it. Two things can happen they play with new masks and show them member by member or with there pure looks...with out any masks...that would be cool as well.

These guys used to be one of the best metal bands. Volume 3,,,,BALLS! nothing has been worth a listen since IOWA. Im sure alot of there new songs will be on the radio though. So I won't even have to buy the CD just plug into my local radio station and I will hear the whole fucking CD. Slipknot=Shit.

I had to figure out a way to see the masks... turn the monitor down at and angle... if you can't see them... you're not missing much... all I can say is that I am actually dissapointed seeing them... hopefully it was all a joke, but the masks don't count, it's there music and the passion put into it
