Death Metal Bandmembers Say Massachusetts Officials Discriminated Against Them

The Associated Press reports that six men have complained to a state agency that Athol, Massachusetts officials banned their "death metal" group from events because of their religious leanings. The men, members of a local band called NECRONOMICHRIST (Neck-row-NO'-mi-christ) ( MySpace), each filed complaints with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination last month. They say Athol leaders prohibited them from playing at fundraisers for a local skate park because some band members are Satanists, agnostics, Buddhist and atheist. I agree these politicians are full of shit. They steal our tax money to pay for their swimming pools and luxury sedans and then they show their gratitude by trampling over our first amendment and various other constitutional rights without a moment's hesitation. Massachusetts is one of the worst offenders but certainly my home state of Connecticut is not far behind on the devolutionary scale. In conclusion all politicians should be thrown in jail with the exceptions of Ron Paul and Mike Gravel because they are doing their best to combat the Illuminati conspiracy and for that we can all be thankful.

For once I agree with a politician. These guys are just pathetic. Does the "lead singer" actually sing or does he just stand there with his white man's fro and annoying goatee bobbing up and down? First off, whether the band suck or not isn't the issue. There's only one way for a band to get better and that's to play in front of different audiences.
Besides that though, this is a very blatant attempt at an organization to ban metal (yeah, not the first time) because of their religious affiliations. So what if their name is what it is! So what if the band's members are whatever religious affiliation! They should still be allowed to play.
The funny thing is that this guy is like "I don't want my 2 year old grand son to hear this"...what is he expecting!? that every fuckin fundraiser is gonna be fuckin Raffi or Sesame Street on ice?!
Personally, this is the type of thing people like us should band together and fuckin flood their offices with mail and shit to let them know what they're doing is totally FUCKED. Music is still art. Whether you like Metallica or Dimmu, the art should still be allowed, even if you think they suck.
That's the problem with the metal community is that when something like this happens, people decide that it's better to criticize the BAND that's affected rather than the overall message of hatred and bigotry.
Get your heads out of your asses people and fuckin do something about this!!
Even if it doesn't yield anything, it'll at least tell people that we won't stand for this type of bullshit.
Think about this too...if it was some R&B or rap guy singing about bling, bitches, ho's, and getting naked and fucking, they'd probably not have a problem with it because it's not as aggro as metal. we need to make sure they realize that this is a fucked situation.
The best part is that the band were willing to make compromises too: "Band members said they attempted to compromise with selectmen by cutting a new, less offensive CD that did not include vulgar or pornographic imagery. Although they were invited to a meeting to talk about what they planned to play at the second concert, they said, they weren’t informed when the meeting was to be held, and didn’t get to explain their side." So they said they'd tone it down a bit and they were still fucked!
I would get it if people didn't write letters but you should at least call and let them know that it's fucked that they won't allow this metal band to play. I mean, fuck, it's at a damn SKATE PARK! So...only certain 'acceptable' aggressive music is allowed?! When things like this happen, it can really lead to a shitfall that can start affecting the metal community...

In short, the band is getting free publicity thanks to this and added spin on a weak story. If they really give two shits about this skate-park play a private show and donate the proceeds to the park. Run a story on that.
"free-thinking cats" - yea I am sure they can really teach his grandkids something with all their free-thinking. They know as much about religion/life as the established religion they are in defiance of. Both are non-proofs.

As the father of three (whose taking my 8 year old son to his first Iron Maiden show in June), I do see where the dude is coming from. The average person sitting in the park with kids wouldn't expect to be bombarded with crappy death metal, and I wouldn't blame them, particularly if the band uses profanity. It's not exactly all-ages entertainment. Now, the selectman does sound like a judgemental douche, hating on the group and calling them trash. But it doesn't sound like they were discriminated against because of their religious or political beliefs; their "art" didn't meet a standard for open-air entertainment that people who want to enjoy the park would be forced to endure. If the band did offer to compromise by playing something that didn't have profanity and sexual content, then I do think they have a complaint, even if it does show that they're willing to sell-out their artistic vision...

I don't know, I guess I've officially turned into an old dude. i get tired of hearing people cry about being discriminated against automatically. kids in my neighborhood bitch about being discriminated against because their skaters and they were shooed out of the park. you were booted not because you were skating, but because you were fucking up the benches and curbs, and whizzing past old ladies and kids in an unsafe way. it's not ALWAYS about being persecuted just because you're a kid/you're a minority/you're a metalhead/whatever. in this case though, i think not being allowed to plead your case goes directly into that realm. if you're told you can plead your case and then aren't allowed to, that's when it goes to that next level.
It's a fine line in this case between being looked at as bitchy and whiny and actually not being allowed to do something because of intolerance.

fair enough...the musicians probably didn't get treated with respect, especially given that they were willing to sit down and talk about meeting in the middle. and yeah, there are times when you go and do something else. like when reunited Air Supply is playing at the county fair...time to grab some funnel cakes on the other side of the fairgrounds!
strikes me as ironic, though, when we make music that is non-conformist/anti-social/rebellious, that we'd be shocked and offended when "average" folks just don't get where we're coming from. kinda sounds like we want it both ways...

Alright, being a citizen of Athol Massachusetts i have to say this is the most rediculous thing i've ever seen happen, not letting a band play an outdoor gig. This is almost as dumb as when they decided that we needed a new middle school instead of a high school.
But thats besides the point.
Why cant they play? becuase its not like everyone elses music?(saracasim) Personally I'm not a fan of Death metal, grindcore and all the heavy shit, BUT if its for a good cause why should it matter?

Alright, you have to know that Athol isnt really that great of a place, theres drugs everywhere and NOTHING to do, so it makes it that much easier for a kid to start doing drugs. Being a teenager in athol, i think i should know. I dont want to see the kids younger than me getting addicted to perks and heroin and other drugs.
And if you havent noticed the skater crowd doesnt listen to N*sync or gangster rap shit. The majority of them like heavy rock music, they like the kind of music that can pump you up.
Death metal is heavy and fast, it pumps them up, puts them 'in the zone' if you will.
Yeah majority of parents dont like heavy metal, yeah so fucking what? Let your kid have a fucking choice to what they want to fucking listen to, if they dont like it they can fucking LEAVE. Stop sheltering your kids Athol, the more you do, the less they know about the actual real world.
Stop trying to lead your fucking kids life, let them make their own desicions let them fucking learn for themselves.
Whos knows if you kid isnt gonna like it, just let them make the choice.
