SLASH On Last Tour With SCOTT WEILAND: 'We Gave Him The Cold Shoulder Like Nobody's Business' - Apr. 16, 2008
UK's Kerrang! magazine has published an exclusive interview with VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash about the group's decision to part ways with singer Scott Weiland and its future plans. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

On how they felt when Scott informed a sold-out Glasgow SECC in March that they were "watching something special — the last tour by VELVET REVOLVER":

Slash: "He [Scott] didn't know that we were already planning on extraditing him. When we started touring the second record, it just felt like we were losing Scott as far as our connection went. During the tour with ALICE IN CHAINS [in August 2007], he was just out to lunch. When he came back, he was supposed to go to rehab, so we postponed our Austrailian tour but he didn't really go to rehab. That was the final blow. We had a lot of commitments, like the tour in the UK, which we didn't want to go back on, so we wanted to finish those before telling him."

On the relationship between Weiland and the rest of VELVET REVOLVER on their last tour together:

Slash: "We basically didn't speak a word that whole time. We gave him the cold shoulder in the UK like nobody's business. There were a couple of arguments around the stage, but other than that, nobody spoke to him. I imagine he was quite uncomfortable. No wonder he didn't have a good time. Then he told everyone in Glasgow that the whole band was over. We were like, 'Oh, well, I guess we've got a surprise coming for you, Scott.'

"For the most part, I don't really remember seeing much of him, We flew to Dubai together, I think, when we played recently. Well, I think I remember him being on the plane, anyway. We sort of got used to him not being around. He's never really been part of the mechanics of the group — he's always been separate and doing his own little thing."

On whether he thinks Weiland was threatened by Slash's shared history with Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum in GUNS N' ROSES:

Slash: "There was some underlying fucking theme that was going on but I'd be lying if I said I could put my finger exactly on it. I definitely get the feeling there was some sort of resentment going on."

On whether there is any truth to the rumor that Weiland was called "J.A." — Junior Axl — by the band behind he back:

Slash: "No, I never called him that. There were a few similarities though. What became really irritating was that I had the same problem with Scott as I had when I toured with Axl. I just couldn't get the guy onstage on time. That I can't accept. I will not do it again. I will not be in a situation where a guy is making the audience wait half an hour or an hour or more. It's criminal. I don't know who someone thinks he is when tries to get away with that sort of thing."

On being "cursed" when it comes to working with singers:

Slash: "I know, it figures. At this point, three times charmed, right? We're looking forward to finding a new singer, though, and we're in a much stronger position to do that than when we started. Now at least people know what we're doing, they know we're a rock 'n' roll band and that we're sucessful enough that you're going to have to be on your game if you're going to hook up with us. I just want to find this guy so we can write some songs."

The entire interview can be found in the latest issue of Kerrang! magazine, out on newsstands now.

that puts the kibosh on any Guns & Roses reunion tour . . .

I could be wrong, but I never heard about Slash having any problems with either of the two Snakepit singers, and they were both amazing singers. I think 95% of the posters on this board could have predicted that VR would have problems with Weiland, though. That's not bad luck--it's bad judgment.

Quit wasting time..... It should have been Sebastian Bach
all a long.... You need a singer who can sing & make it on stage on time everytime..... People can say what they want, when it comes down to it Sebastian eat, shits & sleeps
Rock "n" Roll listen to his Angel Down cd..... from start to finish
it is no stop Rock..... He can sing all the classic Guns tunes & breath fresh life into the new songs....
With Sebastian you guy's won't be chain down by the limitations you had with Scott.....

Too much bad blood, something they don't need, and would never consider anyway. If Scott wants to return to his past, drugs and bandmates, I say do it. These guys are in a different place, and should pick Cornell, him agreeing is kind of iffy, but Travis Meeks would fit the vocal bill, dunno about the social aspect though.

I didn't think it would be Slash's style to be so outright with his disapproval of Scott's behavior along with the band. He was just tired of Scott I guess!

I look forward to the new singer, but hope they think it through and get the guy who sounds wicked and ripping, not just popular.

Would Scott have a career if Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden didn't happen??

I SAW ALICE IN CHAINS PERFORM AN ACOUSTIC SHOW HERE IN AUSTIN, TEXAS WHILE VR WERE TOURING WITH THEM. THEY HAD A "SURPRISE GUEST" COME UP ON STAGE TO JOIN THEM IN A SONG. IT WAS SCOTT. I COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW BAD HE LOOKED. I KNEW HE WAS BACK ON DRUGS ALTHOUGH I WAS IN DENIAL AT THE SAME TIME. HE WAS UNBELIEVABLY SKINNY AND HE COUDLN'T GET THE LYRICS RIGHT ON "ANGRY CHAIR" FOR SHIT! BUT I'M A HUGE SCOTT FAN AS WELL AS THE OTHER GUYS AND HAVE BEEN FOR YEARS AND ALTHOUGH I LIKE THE 2 VR ALBUMS MAYBE IT'S JUST TIME THEY PARTED WAYS. WE REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON BEHIND THE SCENES AND MAYBE SCOTT WAS USING AGAIN(ALTHOUGH THIS WOULD BE NO EXCUSE) BECAUSE HE WAS UNHAPPY PLAYING WITH THESE GUYS. HE SEEMS MUCH MORE EXCITED AND REJUVINATED TO BE BACK WITH THE STP BOYS AND I'M COUNTING ON THEM TO KICK SOME ASS. AS FOR VR I HOPE THEY GET A GOOD SINGER WITH GOOD CHEMISTRY AND TALENT(BECAUSE SCOTT HAS A KNACK FOR MELODIES AND IS VERY CREATIVE) BECAUSE THE REMAINING MEMBERS ARE TOO GOOD TO GET A SHITTY LEAD SINGER. I HOPE EVERYTHING WORKS OUT FOR EVERYBODY....

No offense to other gn'r members, but you are a badass lead guitarist and exceptional riff writer. And now that you are clean and on top of your game,I am sure that you could explore more challenging endevors. Since I'm sure Chris Cornell will not be available( due to his new solo album) I would see about doing more studio work(for fun and creativity) like you did with Iggy Pop or Lenny Kravitz.Get Bluseball back together for some CA club dates. Just get out there and play. And last...If you must keep the safety net of this band then drop the Velvet and just call yourself Revolver. Maybe give John Bush from Armored Saint and Anthrax a try.

THat what may have happened is that Scott recognized the optential of getting back with STP, and stated his intention to do so (as Slash stated here). And that put Slash et al in the position of the new girlfriend who's jealous and suspicious of the ex. So they gave him the cold shoulder. That, in turn, made an STP reunion seem even more appealing. Had the roles been switched, Slash would have done the same thing (and weiland would have had the same reaction). i just wish these boys would grow up and tell interviewers that the VR drama is in the past and wish each other the best (whether sincere or not)

That James Hetfield should be the new VR singer. Dress him up like a girl and call him Jermima, its trendy to have a chick frontperson these days, Hetfield would fit right in as a woman, plus, his other band died about 15 years ago, so hes due for something fresh.

Slash really shouldn't be bashing Weiland so much. If it wasn't for him he would still be playing bars with Slash's Snakepit. That's basically the blueprint for Adler's Appetite, and you don't get much lower than that.

VR isn't going to choose an old singer like Bach or Corabi. VR is about being contemporary and "with the times" so they'll probably choose someone lame like the singer for 3 Days Grace or the guy from 3 Doors Down...I dunno..I'm done.

dudes, there are some good suggestions for new VR singers, but they need someone whose resume sounds good, too. they're just not gonna be trying to sell the band as 2.5 dudes from the mighty Guns N' Roses, the dude from Ugly Kid Joe/Vince Neil's replacement in Motley Crue, and the bald guy. no suction there.

it's gotta be a major dude. like, robert plant. ok that's silly but you get it.

2. Go with an unknown or newer talent. Seriously, check out that David Cook dude from American Idol. Otherwise, just hold open auditions and go with a total unknown.
