JUDAS PRIEST: 'Nostradamus' Title Track Posted Online - Apr. 21, 2008
The title track of JUDAS PRIEST's double disc concept album, "Nostradamus", can be streamed below.

"Nostradamus" is scheduled for release via Columbia Records on Monday, June 16 in Europe, and a day later in the U.S. on Epic Records.

Long in the works, "Nostradamus" takes epic storytelling to a whole new level, as it recounts the life of this mysterious, world-known 16th century French prophet.

Some of the events that Nostradamus experts have interpreted as his predictions include the great fire of London in 1666, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and most recently, 9-11, among countless other renowned events.

"As in any concept piece, the lifeline needs to be of a solid source, taking the music over many levels of interest and perception," points out singer Rob Halford. "'Nostradamus' contains new frontiers explored and defined. The sense of adventure and the journey we undertook bringing the man’s life alive with metal was a real labour of love."

As with all new PRIEST releases, the group — singer Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis — will embark on a mammoth worldwide tour in support of "Nostradamus".

PRIEST will be performing at the 2008 Download Festival — on a bill also featuring KISS — which will serve as a "homecoming" of sorts for the group, as they performed at the first-ever Monsters of Rock festival at Donington Park in 1980.

"The 'Nostradamus' album — above all others — is perhaps the one I'm most proud of," says Tipton. "Whilst in essence and character still very much JUDAS PRIEST, it has afforded the opportunity to explore areas of classical and operatic dimensions that the band normally wouldn't. As a guitarist and writer it has inspired me to greater heights and opened new doors to intrigue and passion. From start to finish, it will take you through a magical experience filled with light, shade, drama, melody and emotion that reflects this unique man and his life."

"For me, 'Nostradamus' has been a musical journey without comparison," adds Downing. "The intrigue and mystery that surrounds this revered man has expanded my perception of heavy metal to the highest plateau and enabled me to reach the outer limits of my imagination and transport unique feelings and emotions to the instrument that allows me to express myself."

In addition to the regular jewel case double CD version of the album, collectors will undoubtedly be interested in hunting down a copy of a deluxe double CD housed in a 48-page hardbound book package. But that's not all — a super deluxe box-set version will also be available with triple vinyl, the double CD, an expanded booklet and a poster.

As to why they chose to make a concept album about Nostradamus, Tipton explains: "We didn't — he chose us. We feel it was meant to be!"

Pretty good song, about what I expected, in the vein of Angel of Retribution, albeit with a more "epic" feel to it that the concept sort of demands. I'll definitely get the album, there was never any doubt about that.

I think it sounds better than "Angel of Retribution"! It rules! Some of these shitty younger bands could learn a lesson...they took the time it took-thet didn't rush it just to get it out and they didn't go all Axl...they let it come to them. Its gonna pay off, loyal metal fans WILL buy...

I personally have hated the Priest new sound - while more modern there didn't seem to be enough low end. This production redeems that and maybe after 12 years you can actually tell the band is using tube amps.

They've also changed Scott Travis' drum sound - it felt a bit weird.

Didn't like the intro much, or the chorus - pretty cheesy stuff but the song was ok. I think it needs a remix as there was just something weird about the levels.

lighten up man. It's 2008 and Priest are still around. This song is a damn good, Classic Priest style song. What's wrong with Painkiller-ish riffs? Isn't that what Priest is known for. I'd love sin After Sin or Stained Class again but after Angel Of Retribution I think this is a good start.

Diabolical: Nope they don't (sadly) use tube amps. They use digital processors lined to transistor amps. But it's still old technology, the newest technology they use is probably Digitech RP200 effect pedals which they bought in 1990. That's why Priest's guitars always sound, well, "fantastic" since they went digital. But fantastic like an Ed Wood film.

This entirely blew me away!!!

Some of you on this thread just don't get it or have the experience with Priest music or with hard rock/metal music to recognize how absolutely high quality and masterful this absolutely is!!!
Of all the later-day hard rock/metal comeback albums I have heard this is hands down THE BEST ONE - EVER! Usually, the best you can hope for from a comeback album is a collection of songs, that though good, are a shadow of their earlier peak glory-period.
Angel Of Retribution had some moments - but fell short like almost all later-day albums.
I'll go down as saying that Nostradamus (if the whole thing is at the quality level of the title track) is absolutely one of their best albums in their entire ouvre. Not only reminiscent of the Painkill album, but even better than that high-level work.
The music and singing is as powerful as anything they produced in their 20s and 30s - they are in their 50s now!
Not only powerful, there is an intricate layering and attention to detail that really draws one into the musical soundscape. There are many musical ideas interlaced and a real development to the dynamics and structuring of the piece.
The production is stellar and very much in balance, bright and full (versus what another poster thought).
And the repeating of "Nostradamus" actually works. While I usually don't like repetitive choruses (eg. Madien's "Fear Of The Dark"), this one is different and has a purpose. The song comes at the end of the album - it is the penultimate song (second to last). Repeating "Nostradamus", with multi-layered vocals thickening the chorus, make it seem like it's a whole throng of villagers chanting his name over and over. Clearly, towards the end of the epic story, Nostradamus has conquered whatever metaphorical dragon he had to go out and slay and now has returned the hero. Just listen to the lyrics: "He is our salvation...He has overcome, he can take the thrown". The repeating chorus functions to pound the triumph in deeper and deeper and overwhelm the listener with the sense and power of his victory. It is a choral chatting motif that is a part of operatic music (not a sign of a lack of imagination in the lyrical writing).

In short, this isn't lacking anything (unlike all other later-day, comeback albums) and is absolutely their best writing, performing and sound to date - reaching new levels of complexity they never attempted before.
What the hell happened? This was supposed to suck! Where is the age showing in Halford's vocals? Where is the lack of overall energy? Where is the boring writing and lack of memorable melodies or hooks? Why don't this sound like a bunch of uninspired, un-hungry, middle-aged has-been rockers? Why doesn't this sound like every other later-day, comeback album???

Damn, I'm pre-ordering my Priest album today and buying a ticket when they roll through town (though I'm being very tight with my money right now).

This is the best surprise in a long, long time!!!

Congratulations JUDAS FUCKING PRIEST!!!

If you don't like this song, you don't have ears.

For those of you who do, crank it and start shuffling back and forth in unison - Priest-style \^^/ !!!

I'm waiting for this album for almost 2 years now and am afraid that my expectations are too high.

Sure the titletrack is fast, hard enough, with some blistering guitarwork à la Mercyful Fate, but nothing that blasts you away...

The chorus "Nostradamus" is repeated too often and is not a good refrein to sing a long. Overall the song has the right ingredients, but the composition is not strong enough, it's too long and gets boring...

I prefer tracks like "Judas rising" or "Hellrider" with a straight simple, but genius structure and heavy riffing.

This concept album thing ruins the lyrics, because you need a story to be told and this doesn't fit easily in rimes. The song is too complex and the contribution of keyboards makes it even more tough to swallow.

It's not bad, but I hope this isn't the best track on the album!

I still don't think the repeating of "Nostradamus" is (for example) as jarring as Iron Maiden's "No More Lies". That song just drones on and on, where at least this has interesting guitarwork and a hook to it that grabs you.

I've listened to it like 20 times now....fuckin killer song.

If a musician is any good they will improve with age and that is what has happened with the guys in Priest. They are all better at their craft now than they ever were in their 20's. The same with the guys in Maiden. Its only the crappy bands that lose it and actually become worse with age.

I think the into part is a little over the top but not bad. The vocal melody in the chorus strikes me as just a bit simplistic too, but it definitely works for the song.

Anyone else think the guitar sound is a bit of a throwback to the Hell Bent For Leather/Stained Class era with the sort of muted/understated distortion? And the verse and bridge guitar parts kind of remind me a bit of the song Hell Bent For Leather.

I also hear a Ritchie Blackmore vibe in the keyboard/guitar break prior to the solo break which is kind of cool & different. In fact, Rob's scream going into the solo break and the build-up part at the end of the solos has a bit of Highway Star twist to it.

I like it. If this song is any indication, I think it shows they are going to draw on elements from every era of the band and blend a lot of different influences. Can't wait for the rest!

hammer34, you nailed it with the Ritchie Blackmore reference. That was the first thing that stood out to me... the Deep Purple sound that is huge in the genetic makeup of Priest, is back. That goes back to at least Sin After Sin which was produced by Roger Glover. Talk about returning to roots... not many bands can tap into a sound they had eh... 30 years ago and make it modern/relevant again.

Great song but the drums sound dare I say *gasp* Holland-ish. Kinda reminds me of Hard As Iron off Ram It Down even though I think that was a drum machine.
