MAYHEM Parts Ways With Guitarist - Apr. 22, 2008
MAYHEM guitarist/songwriter Blasphemer (a.k.a. Rune Eriksen) has decided to leave the legendary Norwegian black metal band. His statement on the matter reads as follows:

"It is with these written words that I hereby retract myself from my position as the guitar player of MAYHEM.

"The main reason behind this conclusion lies in the fact that I simply don't see any future for me in the band anymore, at least not a future I'd like to participate in over the coming years. I've been playing my part in the band now for more than 13 years already, having composed, produced and released several albums with great vision, dedication and craftsmanship, to arrive at this crossroad of opposites. Sooner or later, all things comes to an end, and in my case, this circle is complete.

"For some of you this might not come as the biggest surprise, as I've clearly stated in several interviews that I was not sure what the next step would be. These 'hints' were partly rooted in the fact that our latest album fulfilled all of the expectations, visions and aspects of negativity that I felt I wanted to express with this band, and also, of similar importance, that I felt tired of both the touring aspects, amidst its turbulence and personal differences, and also my role in the band.

"It has been a dark, devoted and spellbinding journey, and as some beings and entities develop, others remain the same. I've developed my essence. No questions. However, the legacy of MAYHEM will / must always remain what it always has been, and I wish to thank all parts involved and to wish them all the best for the future. I also would like to thank my followers over the years, from 'Wolf's Lair...' to 'Ordo...', my vision has been clear. I'm also sure the band will continue with a respectful formation, and that an eventual album will be placed 'up there' where it (should) belong.

"I have now personally chosen to focus on other paths in terms of creativity and vision. My 'child of heart' AVA INFERI has already a busy schedule for the future and our third album is being crafted as we speak. I will also resurface with new will and blood in a future extreme project. You have not heard the last of me, on the contrary. It's all about to begin.

"Note that the few already scheduled shows will go on as planned WITH me."

Fan-filmed video footage of MAYHEM performing the song "Ancient Skin" on February 26, 2008 at the Barfly in Birmingham, England can be viewed below (courtesy of "daveingham").

Revolution-Music.dk conducted an interview with MAYHEM singer Attila Csihar at the Royal Metal Fest, which took place this past February in Århus, Denmark. Download the 28-minute audio file at this location.

MAYHEM was honored in the "Metal" category at the 36th annual Spellemann awards (the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy Awards) for their latest release, "Ordo Ad Chao". The largest and oldest Norwegian music awards show was held on February 2 at the Spektrum in Oslo, Norway and was broadcast live on the Norwegian channel TV2.

A photo of MAYHEM members Jan Axel Blomberg (a.k.a. Hellhammer; drums) and Jørn Stubberud (a.k.a. Necrobutcher; bass) with their Spellemann award can be viewed at Dagbladet.no.

Speaking to Dagbladet.no, Stubberud implied that MAYHEM might have released its last album ever with "Ordo Ad Chao". "For us to make a record is such a great undertaking that I have to admit I can't entertain the idea of starting a new one," he said. "We'll see in a couple of years, but I can't guarantee anything whatsoever."

"Ordo Ad Chao" entered the Norwegian album chart at position No. 12, the band's highest position ever.

MAYHEM had only once before been on the Norwegian charts, when the band's last album, "Chimaira", reached No. 28 in 2004.

I know that Blasphemer is really a more technical, better guitarist than Euronymous. Both are/were great songwriters though. It'll be interesting to see who they get next.

Blasphemer rules supreme.

He has carried Mayhem on his shoulders all these years, writing all the music and taking the name further than it could have ever been taken. His craftsmanship and ability to write the most intricate riffs and structures is second to none, and every time you want to be reminded of his genius just listen to "A Time To Die"/Grand Declaration...

Everything he did in Mayhem is brilliant, from Wolf's Lair Abyss to the new one, Ordo Ad Chao, which is indeed the quintessence of evil and is a masterpiece, on all levels. Congratulations to him for choosing to leave while being at the top, having just released the best Mayhem work ever.

For me, Mayhem is officially dead, I can't think of anyone who could possibly fill in Rune's shoes. Leaving aside his unparalleled talent, who could take Mayhem further than he did? Let's be honest...this is it.

Good luck to you Blassy, and thank you for what you did with your life!

Right after he plays on a worthwhile album and leaves the fans wanting more he leaves the band. That sucks.. I loved Ordo Ad Chao, it may just be my all time favorite Mayhem album.

It would be so funny if they got Varg to replace him.

I agree with Sinned. Snorre was the one who wrote a load of the decent riffs on DMDS, and he's not doing a great deal with Thorns at the moment, so he'd be the ideal choice.

And I don't think Varg would be too interested. Mayhem aren't ambient enough for him :P

hence the "oh, wait... FUCKING VARG!" in my post. No, I wasn't suggesting Varg as a replacement, I was cursing him for killing Euronymous. About Snorre, that does seem like a good choice, but didn't he play a role in the murder? I'm pretty sure he at least drove Varg to Euronymous' pad to do the stabbing. Getting Varg or anyone who helped him kill would be kinda like reforming Pantera and getting that fucking dipshit who killed Dime as the new guitarist... not funny.

According to Varg, Snorre went along with Varg so he could show Oystein some new riffs, and that Snorre was out taking a smoke when Oystein was killed, so I guess he's pretty blameless. After it, shock probably set in. Seeing someone get killed will fuck up anyone's brain.

This has been coming. I'm surprised it took this long.
Mayhem have effectively burned every bridge they've crossed over the past four years. First, Maniac was asked to leave, which was bad enough, then the craptalk from Necrobutcher made it an even worse situation. Then, Hellhammer's hijinks, joining Dimmu Borgir and making that project his priority. The long-awaited US tour was already doomed because of this, before the arm issue had even happened. The tour was promised to be rescheduled, but not another word on the matter, a year later.
Blasphemer has been carrying Mayhem almost by himself, writing everything since he joined. Necrobutcher, who appears to believe he's the de facto leader of the band, not only doesn't write anything but he doesn't even play on the records. Blasphemer had to cover for him as well. So why would anyone in the band find themselves at odds with Blasphemer? He has worked his ass off and only wanted Mayhem to be an active band, touring and recording. Isn't that the goal of any group? Connect with the audience? What's the problem?
The problem is simple.
Mayhem doesn't care about their audience. They want to ride the momentum of a legacy, and only on very occasional effort.
All the speculation of who will replace Blasphemer is academic. He WAS the band. If the name goes on, which it probably will (after all, why not? It's not like they actually do much of anything) it won't be as a progression. They'll end up as a very rarely performing best-of jukebox. Going from one town one month to another town six months later playing 'Deathcrush', 'Freezing Moon', etc.
Mayhem are over. This is the end, whether the name is officially retired or not.

i can see infernus being mad at HH joining the oposition. But really BM has become a business lately, im pretty sure w a large sum of money Infernus would join lol. Infernus would be a pretty good acquisition by mayhem. also i doubt he would get gorgoroth name back for his band and only get in more legal shit, he should name his current band Infernus and join mayhem as the guitarist.
