OPETH's MIKAEL ÅKERFELDT: 'I'm A Slave To BLABBERMOUTH.NET' - Apr. 27, 2008
Phil Freeman of Metal Edge magazine (web site) recently conducted an interview with OPETH mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt and the group's new guitarist Fredrik Åkesson (KRUX, ex-ARCH ENEMY, TALISMAN). A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On how Fredrik has been accepted by the OPETH fans:

Åkesson: "They've [the fans] been quite nice. I don't read the band's forum every day. Once in a while, I read some stuff. For me, the most important thing is to do the best I feel I can do for myself. Then if people like it or not, it's up to them. I understand picturing a band with its original lineup, a fan will always have that picture, and it's disturbing when a new guy comes in. But life goes on. All I can do is do my best, that's the way I see it."

On how OPETH is a good fit for Fredrik — not only musically, but geographically as well:

Åkesson: "We [all] live in Stockholm, so it's easy to rehearse and everything. When I played with ARCH ENEMY, I was the only one living in Stockholm and they lived six hours' drive south. And I feel more integrated, more a part of this group. I was playing Chris' [Amott] parts in ARCH ENEMY, and I never got to record with them. Of course, the music is very different here, too, and I find that thrilling."

On the change in OPETH's sound on the new album, "Watershed":

Åkerfeldt: "I think you can hear that the band is changing and going somewhere. Which to me was a little bit of a revelation. It's not that different to what my personal taste is, and what my idea of OPETH has always been, but it's different.

"Having two such strong figures as Peter [former OPETH guitarist Peter Lindgren] and Lopez [former OPETH drummer Martin Lopez] not be in the band anymore has influenced the music and the lyrics, I think. And on top of that, my head's changed a lot since I had my kids. You see things differently. Musically, I think there's a wider gap between the ugly and the beautiful this time. But I can't say I prefer one or the other. I want everything, you know. And I have a tendency to want to destroy beautiful things, if you know what I mean."

On whether Mikael cares what the fans think:

Åkerfeldt: "When I write music, I want it to be completely devoid of any outside interference. At the end of the day, I still have to say that we did what we wanted to do. But I also in some strange way am seeking approval from the outside. And if they slag me off, I say, 'Oh, fuckin' idiots. They don't know shit.' If they praise me, I still think, 'Oh, fuckin' idiots.'

"I'm a slave to Blabbermouth. [Laughs] I have to check it out. And if there's something about OPETH, or about me, I have to see whatever shit people are writing. And I kind of dismiss the praise and go for the negative. And sometimes I get pissed off and I have to write something back, and obviously that's when I lose."

Metal Edge's entire interview with OPETH can be found in the magazine's June 2008 issue, available on newsstands now.

Opeth & Paradise Lost touring together WAS ace 2 years ago!!!

Opeth playing with Arch Enemy the other day in Manchester, however, wasn't.

Not because Opeth were bad, far from it, it was an awesome set, but I was expecting to be able to get there for 8pm (tickets saying 19:30) & not have missed 2 bands (Devildriver & someone else - no real loss) & half of the first of Opeth's songs because Arch Enemy were somehow headlining who were just DULL & made my ears tired so I left half way through the EXACT SAME DRUM SOLO AS LAST YEAR!

I suppose it's the downside of being successful, whilst musical integrity is intact, the packaged tours that they get plonked on may not be ideal.

Oops, rant over...

On the plus side, I got a preorder voucher for the SE version of the album so that's ordered but I couldn't help myself & have downloaded the album & it's FANTASTIC!!!

Hopefully they will come back to the UK soon with some more appropriate bands, preferably any of Dark Tranquillity, Anathema, Katatonia or Porcupine Tree (or Paradise Lost again)

This past weekend I held a Watershed "release party" with a small bunch of friends and family (you know how I got it I think) and well I think the fans aren't going to know what hit them! We had a great time, played it twice each time with devil horns, some tears and even dancing :P I mean you REALLY managed to compile all the music you cherish into this one really well.. S. Walker, Camel, Crimson, Circulus, Porcupine Tree even a hint of Diabolical Masquerade IMO. and it sounds like the whole album is a sort of "FAREWELL" to past Opeth members, especially Peter. I can hear the melodies of previous Opeth albums creep up almost like a requiem of sorts. This album really sounds like a reflection of the people behind the name Opeth. In my home this weekend its been appreciated on more levels and by more people than any previous album to date. This is Calvin, saying to you, Mikael, never let go.

I'm tired of hearing about these guys all the time. I like their music and all but this guy Akerfeldt is a pretty righteous dorkus malorkus. I'd much rather read informative news articles regarding the depletion of human rights as a result of the Illuminati conspiracy. For example, I certainly find it ironic that Wesley Snipes is being sent to prison for asserting his constitutional rights, meanwhile the illegitimate IRS and the corrupt politicians continue to roam free and wreak havoc upon the American taxpayers. In other words the criminals are sending the innocent man to prison. Reminds me of that old story about the inmates running the asylum, such is life in America.

Downloaded it, listened to it for a numerous times already. I am shocked at how good it is! I've been listening to Opeth since Morningrise, I didn't like My arms and Still Life, liked the rest of the albums but more or less for me Opeth have been repeating its own formula pretentitiously without much aim at anywhere.

Now... This album is getting it somewhere. Music is used as a tool to create a certain feeling, atmosphere, for the first time in Opeth so effectively. I am very curious about the lyrics too. Watershed is really a fitting title because I think this is a watershed work for Opeth.

And that backwards satanic message in Hessian Peel. I think it goes like this:

Out On The Courtyard
Coming Back To Life
I Sweet Satan
I See Thee

And there is another short backwards message in the song around 7.20 but I couldn't decipher it.

Anyways... Watershed is BRILLIANT. And Hessian Peel is I think the best Opeth song ever - what a climax!!

Opeth has always been a huge influence on my music, and was what got me through some very tough times, as well has been a backdrop to some of the happiest times of my life.

However ever since being signed to RR you seem to have changed your personality on stage and in the media. You used to be very humble, polite, and entertaining while on stage. After we saw you on what you called the "Opeth's selling out tour," the sounds of the Underground, you have been more or less the righteous "dorkus malorkus" that one guy was talking about. When I saw you for the Ghost Reveries Tour your attitude on stage seemed more like a bad impersonation of Devin Townsend. When he did it, it was funny, but when you do it you come off as an asshole.

I heard the new song and saw the retarded video for the new album on your myspace. The song was pretty bad, (what the fuck was up with that drum solo?) and I'll forgive the bad Mtv Video, but seriuosly I doubt this new album will capture me the way the first seven did.

Also, the first five tracks on GR are an amazing compilation of all the things that made each of the albums before it great. I wish the album had only had those five tracks because the last three sound like comercialized bullshit. The grand conjuration almost sounds like a Nu-metal song.

Yeah that's my Opeth rant. I'll buy the new album but seriously, this is Opeth's last chance before I check out, and I probably don't need to see Opeth live anymore because I feel like the live show is a waste of money.

Hey,

Well, I´ve downloaded the album as well, but no worries. I will purchase it when it is released. I think its great to download an album before it is released and see if its good or not. I dont have alot of money but I always buy all the albums I like and even some I dont really like but feel that I have to buy since I have downloaded them.

The new Opeth album is amazing. Dont have anything else to say I guess. I havnt really enjoyed Opeth since the old days, I mean, Orchid is one of the best albums out there. Sure, I listened to and purchased, and even went on the shows for Blackwater Park & Delieverance, but I dont find the albums interesting in more than 20 min. Ghost Revieres had some nice riffs and parts in it, but overall it was just dull and the sound was to boring and sterile.

Watershed will take some time to get a grip of I guess, and yes theres still to much soft and clean parts for me, I think those parts were better before. But the hard parts are just amazing. I love it and its just bloody amazing. Magnificent even... The clean Vocals on the blast.... Fuckin hell, I just wanna pick my guitar up and learn the riff and headbang like mad. But then my Girlfriend would throw me out hahaha. One last thing, the growls... Damn... They are true perfection!

Nah, Om du läser det här Mikael... Bra jobbat, jävligt bra jobbat!

There nothing left other than to say you have the physical package. Nothing better than aticipation & the confirming it with a fuck yeah the first time it hits the speakers at high volume. Nothing better than rolling the dice on a band ya never heard, read something good, a buddy says check it out, & then oh yah!!! Sometime ya get burned, but just sell it. I wish that new Metallica album would get out so ya 'all coud get yer bitchin done, your critical assessments out there for the world to see on lar's drum tones, Jame this, Mustaine that, better than this, less than that, & then ya can get back to jerking off. The internet does away with the whole risk of wasting money on crap though.

I used to buy 10 albums a month, but now I buy maybe 10 a year but that's because I only buy what I like & at the mo there's not much to like (for me)

And the generation thing - I've been into metal for 16 years & stay well clear of moshpits, I just happen to not be scared of technology (& understand that CDs are digital too, so there's no difference between a high quality MP3 or a CD, that's why bands put special editions out on release day so that there's more incentive to buy although the music should be enough.

If you think an mp3 is true CD quality then you are proof that iTunes, Amazon, and all the other sites charging 99 cents a song for lossy less than CD quality shit are actually succeeding in brainwashing the public to think its ok. Seriously go learn about FLAC and other lossless music and listen to the same song in shit lossy mp3 and in perfect ripped FLAC on a decent system. If you have any ear there will be an easy to tell difference especially in the high end spectrum.

I have no high end hearing from all the heavy metal I've bought!

Ok, so it may not be "true CD quality" (although I did say no difference, not "perfect" or "true", way to put words in my mouth) - if you can afford a high end sound system & car stereo then bully for you, but for general purposes a CD full of ripped MP3s is much more preferable to carrying 10 CDs in my car (which has been broken into & had expensive stereos & several CDs nicked from)

FTR, I've never bought an MP3 from a store, I rip them myself from CD (of which I have several hundred) at 256kbps so that I can leave my CD alone (because I don't want them to get scratched)

Anyway, it's a dumb argument - it should not be a case of "don't listen until you've bought it" - I wouldn't drive a car before I had a test drive & as someone mentioned "the past" - my mates & I used to go to the library & rent tapes & copy them between us & if I liked an album I bought it - MP3s are just the next stage apart from the fact that it's become an alternative to buying rather than sampling then buying.

you started it with this comment... "The Leak - Is CD quality - so that argument is lost. Maybe learn about MP3s?" so you defense which is full of things unrelated to your statement as well as accusing me of putting words in your mouth is pointless. CD quality is CD quality which to me means it is matched in quality to the actual CD plain and simple. Are you trying to say that when you said "CD quality" you mean that it wasn't actually CD quality? Confusing? Back tracking like you did solves nothing. Just admit you don't know much about digital music files and their various quality levels instead of trying to sound all big and bad by saying... "Maybe learn about MP3s?". Do your research before you open your mouth and look like a fool. We never discussed convience of mp3s or any of that only quality. As for the don't listen until you bought it I was talking mainly about bands like Opeth or others who have many great albums out. I can understand checking out the leak if its a new band you have never heard or one you are unsure of, however, if you are a long time fan of a band or like most if not all of their albums why is there a problem in not trying before you buy? Watch their new video and listen to a couple samples on myspace if you really are unsure if the band has suddenly went to the gutter or not.

Mr. A, Im gay for you.

Listening to this new record, I feel the band is heading in a ...ummm...good direction, but still 'testing-the-waters (so to speak).

There is more work to be done - more evolving.

I've listened to both The Lotus Eater and Porcelain Heart and I'm really underwhelmed by the new material thus far. I love Opeth, but the direction this new record seems to have taken (based on only these two songs, mind you) isn't to my taste. When I got into Opeth I hate death vocals, and now I find myself wishing Mike would get back to growling more. He just sounds so fucking bad ass that it's a real shame that he seems to be cutting back on the last two (not counting Damnation in the chronology) records.

I'll still certainly be buying the special edition of Watershed on the day that it is released, but I more or less expect to be disappointed with the whole. Who knows, perhaps by having no positive expectations, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

The Lotus Eater is an awesome song. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album. Opeth are just leagues above the rest.

I downloaded it, sorry, but I will buy it on the first day. Without me downloading deliverance, I would have never heard Opeth's music and I would not have purchased all of the Opeth cd's.

Michael gets pissed off when us fans get his albums for free...

But he doesn't give a shit about how his record company exploits the fans by releasing and re releasing the albums in different formats

sooo...

Free cheers for free music!

I'm actually FMJ and Diana DeVille's slave respectfully so that rules me out on me being Mikael Akerfeldt.

Plus I don't live in Sweden.

Mikael I just think it may be quite possible that Anders Friden likes to take big steamy scoops of French fries and toss them into your Den. Hit that zombie wigger with your Axe of Gold. Go!

I've always been a huge fan of Opeth, the only downside I could ever find with them, is when I had the opportunity once to meet Mikael... down to earth guy and all, extremely talented musician... but I thought of Mikael a little differently after our short conversation.

There are few people I would speak to so highly of, despite the fact they probably hear that kind of shit incessantly from such a wide spectrum of people, but when you give someone your most utmost respect, you don't expect to be left in shock because they really didn't seem to care.

The set was over, and it's not like I was the only person hanging around, but come on.....

I tend to agree with the post from earlier - Opeth's vibe and Akerfeldt's persona seemed to completely change a couple of years ago..

I saw them in Sydney with Alchemist on the Deliverance tour and it was one of the best and most atmospheric shows I've been to, put on by refreshingly genuine musicians.

But when they came out for Ghost Reveries it was very different. Mikael's attitude seemed much more arrogant than before, with a lot of irritating rockstar-esque comments, and the band in general seemed much less focused(Not to mention Axenrot not really filling Lopez's shoes behind the drums).

Speaking of Axenrot, you're definitely right about that fill in Porcelain Heart too, it sounds more like somebody dropping a drumkit down a flight of stairs than somebody attempting interesting polyrhythms!
