BLACK SABBATH's BUTLER: 'I Don't Think We've Got That Many Years Left To Do An OZZY Album'
- Apr. 29, 2008
All four members of HEAVEN AND HELL (Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice) recently spoke to Goldmine contributor Bryan Reesman (web site) for an extensive, 5,000-word cover story about their entire history, including touring, their various reunions, and recording a new album together. Also quoted are JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford, VIRGIN STEELE frontman David DeFeis, former EXCITER drummer Dan Beehler, and rock journalists Malcolm Dome and Bradley Torreano.
A couple of excerpts from the story follow:
On the chemistry between Tony and Geezer:
Dio: "What Geezer and Tony do together, what they created together, is playing the same things together that nobody was really doing, with a bass that was really out front and just as important as the guitar. You can't in any way, shape or form diminish Geezer's contribution to it all, especially for the fact that he was writing all of the lyrics in most of the early things anyway. It's a two-way street with Tony and Geezer. I think at the end of the day — and I'm not trying to make any comparisons, because I don't think it's important — but Tony has always been BLACK SABBATH. It's always really been his band. Geez will tell you that, too. The leader was Tony, and everyone did what Tony felt was right, and luckily for everyone concerned it was right."
On the possibility of recording a new BLACK SABBATH album with Ozzy Osbourne on vocals:
Butler: "I don't think we've got that many years left to do an Ozzy album. Maybe we'll do it in Hell. We could do quite well down in Hell."
On how HEAVEN AND HELL members are getting along today after their previous two break-ups:
Appice: "This is the smoothest it's ever been between everybody, especially the three of them. Everybody's getting along great. I think everybody respects the careers that each person has had and their playing and musicianship."
Dio: "You walk a little bit more on eggshells when you get back together the second time, and the third time was really easy. I just can't do things with people I don't like. I've always been really lucky to like them all. They're such down-to-earth, great people, so talented and determined. That's my kind of band."
Iommi: "You get to understand more and mellow out more and go along with it. Things that used to drive me up a wall, or [I would] get annoyed with things, I really don't get that so much now. Of course, everybody gets annoyed, but I can understand the other side more now."
Butler: "I think we are all more up front with each other. We can all be cranky from time to time, so instead of taking offense and bearing grudges, we give each other space. Before, if we argued or disagreed about something, we'd go off in a huff and bottle things up. Now, I just realize this is the real world. Life isn't a fairy tale. We also have other things to do outside of this. We are doing this for the love of it, rather than necessity. If I ever feel uncomfortable doing this, I'll simply walk away from it, no hard feelings."

I'm a massive Sabbath/Ozzy fan but i can't really say I'm bothered about this news. I'm happy for both H&H and Ozzy to keep doing what they are doing.
First post, and I say VIRGIN MOTHERFUCKING STEELE!!!!!!!!!!
All subsequent posters must bow to the most underrated band of all time.

Never listened to Virgin Steele but I've listened to Virgin Black... *snores* Anyway I hope that Ozzy never contributes vocals to another Sabbath album because his best contributions were far too long ago. Ozzy can't sing for beans anymore and he can't even remember the lyrics to "Crazy Train" without the aid of a teleprompter. That really says it all right there. Pat Boone can remember the lyrics to "Crazy Train" but Ozzy cannot. Take a moment to really let that sink in. My favorite Sabbath albums were Ozzy and they always will be, but Dio is far superior for this role at this point. Dio has my full blessing and my permission to carry forth the Sabbath banner without interference from Ozzy, Sharon and their respective legal team.

I don't think anyone cares if Sabbath puts out another album with Ozzy. All that matters is H and H and the product they are presenting. Ozzy had numerous chances but the puppet master Sharon rock blocked it...
I can't say she pulled a cock block for the Ozzy / Sabbath album but you never know...

i love sabbath, especially the ozzy era....( as much as i like dio i'd take gillan and born again over any dio / sabbath albums). i had hoped that ozzy and sabbath had another album in them. at this point i don't think it'd be very good, but i'd be inclined to buy it.
the only way i could see that even coming close to being "decent", is if ozzy goes into semi-retirement and lay's off the booze while heaven and hell do there thing for the next year or so. then maybe......that's a big maybe......they might come up with a worthwhile ozzy album

Awwwww Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeee(ah) I just bought a ticket to see these dudes along with the Metal Priest in August. It'll be a bit of a road trip for me since they arent coming to my neck of the woods. More of an adventure, I can't wait !
Also I just ordered the new Testament ( say "Tasty-Mint" ) album today from amazing.com. .I'll be getting it by Thurday !
Probably will go to Progressive Nation in a couple of weeks too !It's looking like its going to be a Sweet Metal Summer for Metal Morgagne this year. Now its just a matter of eagerly waiting for those steamy months of heavy metal music, fishing for catfish, perch, and white bass, and drinking rich, cold summer ale !!!
Maybe I'll make some new friends too ?

I'd still like them to do it. I liked Ozzy's last album Black Rain, saw him in January.
Alot of these bands are getting older, and once they're gone, they're gone forever. Your choices are to take them as they are, or not at all. I prefer to take them as they are.
I'm looking forward to getting the new Judas Priest, and already have tickets for their show in August with Heaven and Hell, Motorhead and Testament.
I say keep putting out albums, keep touring, if you don't like them, don't support them.

dio definitely in my mind is the right man for the job! his vocal performance for instance on the heaven and hell dvd from 2007 says it all .he has been around since the 70's and still sings fuckin amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!vinnie appice is beatin up the drums also!!!!!!!! ,im glad to see here in 2008 that this band is still doin something at least they are not "sell outs"like metallica !!!ozzy did his thing back in the day that might have put sabbath on the map but dio is i think around 60 years old and really hasnt lost much of anything vocally, how many singers can you say are still rockin at age 60?.i am very impressed with this line-up for 2008 and cant wait to hear a new album from them, also by the way ive seen ozzy live many times and he has his good moments and bad moments ,more bad than good nowdays ,and ronnie doesnt forget the words!ozzy lip syncs on live tv [jimmy kimmel] crazy train?what the fuck is that all about? dio doesnt do shit like that !! DIO YOU FUCKIN RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!sorry ozzy? ,ill buy the new album THE FIRST DAY IT COMES OUT !!!!IT GOES ON AND ON AND ITS HEAVEN AND HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dio (Ronnie Padanova) has been in the music biz since the late 1950's starting in a band called the Vegas Kings! He's 66! He and Paul McCartney are the same age. And yes, he does rule. In fact, you can say that he predated Ozzy as a musician. While Ozzy was popping zits and reading backwards at a Birmingham school , Ronnie was out rockin n rollin every night earning his stripes with such bands as The Vegas Kings (1957-1958) Ronnie & The Rumblers (1958) ,Ronnie and the Red Caps (1958-1967) ,The Elves (1968) ,and Elf (1969-1976) . Sabbath may be the first known metal band, but Ronnie was the first heavy metal singer .

I hope they never record another album with Ozzy. The only way it would be worth it would be if they recorded the greatest Sabbath album ever, which wouldn't happen. It's bad enough they reunited only to play the same setlist for 10 years. Don't ruin your image anymore than that.
The album they're recording with Dio is going to be awesome on the other hand.

Ozzy CANNOT sing and writes the worst music nowadays. Not even Zakk Wylde can save him. Ronnie James Dio is a great vocalist, frontman and writer, overall he is excellence. On the other hand I love everything Tony Iommi has ever done. Admit it people Tony Iommi is a freaking genious from hell who created metal!!!!!!!!!

thanks for the bit of history on dio!i didnt realize he was 66!"IMPRESSIVE "maybe he will still be rockin to 100? i think he could do it! i wonder what sharon and jack would say about him then? i couldnt agree with you more dio is the 1st heavy metal singer and still the man on the silver mountain!
COMMENT | Dio is not.... posted by : metaldams 4/29/2008 6:42:30 PM
...the first heavy metal singer. He may have been making music since the late 50's, but let's remember that not only predates heavy metal, but also The Beatles/British Invasion by a number of years. Ronnie wasn't "metal" in the late 50's or 60's, though it shouldn't be expected of him due to the times he was living in.
That said, Ronnie may not be the first, but he's certainly one of the best, even at age 65. May he live on.

Nothing they put out now would be worse then the last album they did, they keep saying why end on a bad note or put something out that isn't as good as the stuff we did togeather. Well fuck that, put out a new album
COMMENT | Long live the Dio Sabbath posted by : Baldur 5/12/2008 8:50:01 AM
I never thought he was that good on the Ozzy material, like a lot of others, but on this last tour, with just his own Sabbath stuff, it was a real triumph and vindication for him.
I liked when he first came into Sabbath, since I'd been a fan of Rainbow Rising back in '77. It worked, but --different band, obviously, than the original Sabbath.
As for Ozzy--he's where he should be, so really he's go no complaints.
And..just my opinion, but I always found Dio more interesting as a front man, except for when Randy Rhoads was playing with Ozzy, since Ozzy really played well off Randy. Wylde isn't very interesting to me as a player, I've always felt. To pentatonic.
