METALLICA's 'Mission' Launch Date Announced - May 2, 2008
METALLICA's recently announced web site — MissionMetallica.com — where the band says it will offer fans a chance to "experience the [group's] new album before it's done," is scheduled to go "live" on May 12.

As previously reported, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told RollingStone.com that the band intends to explore "everything" in terms of selling its music once its current recording contract expires. But although the group's upcoming ninth studio album is its last with Warner Bros. Music, Ulrich said they would be hesitant to follow in the footsteps of U2 and MADONNA and sign a comprehensive "360 deal" with Live Nation. Ulrich explained, "We've never sold ourselves that way. No disrespect. We want to be as free a player as possible. We've been observing RADIOHEAD and Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet."

Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio something similar when asked what the band will do once its contract is finished. "There's a bunch of possibilities out there," he said. "It's great to be able to have the choices, and it's great when you don't need the record company to sign the checks, you know what I mean? Then it sort of becomes a whole different thing. The landscape continues to change, you know, so we'll see."

Ulrich talked with RollingStone.com on April 19, as the band did an autograph session at an independent record store in northern California to celebrate Record Store Day. Ulrich called the group's participation a "no-brainer," adding, "The record store has been such a huge part of our lives. When I was 12, 14 years old in Denmark, the record store was the Holy Grail and the guy who worked there was my hero."

The new METALLICA album is tentatively due out in September, with U.S. tour dates possibly in the works for around the same time.

The band has scheduled a slew of European festival dates for May, June, July and August in addition to two U.S. shows, on May 16 at a radio festival in Tucson, Arizona and mid-June at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee.

I'm 42 yrs old, I was in High School when they emerged. for a while they were the coolest thing in the world. They belong on any Metal Mt. Rushmore you care to name. However, Pantera kinda of diminished Metallica for me forever. Like an X-rated movie compared to an R-rated movie or Dr. J (like I said I'm old) against Michael Jordon. Whatever Metallica's strengths were Pantera was Stronger. In large part because Pantera housed the Eddie Van Halen of metal R.I.P. Dime. Lars and James have not made a competitive album almost 20 years, but we owe them a lot

It's funny to see how Lars embraces the Internet now that it invaded the whole of the music business. He must have realized that if you cannot fight the monster you better take advantage of it. If Metallica goes online with their next albums then I guess the new business models will follow them. After Radiohead and NIN, Metallica could add the weight this approach needs to convince people of all the good it can bring...

I've got no hope for this next album but only for this band's impact on the emerging business models they'll go with.

There are 2 schools of thought here. One being that Meturdlica has done an about face about yet again about sharing music with the public. Remember this is a band that when they began actually encouraged their fans to copy tapes and pass them along to friends. But now that they've matured and have embraced the monster of commercialism and utter greed, they are hedging bets that 30 second snipets of the best parts of their yet to be released half-hearted effort. Their are a few things we can be sure of with this release. One is that you'll be able to hear the bass in all it's glory since a more than competent 4 string crusher is at the helm. Two is that depending on the feedback of the fans will probably determine which if any songs actually get released. Remember we have an iconic band that hasn't done a decent record since 1991 and even though they can play greatest hits concerts for the rest of their lives, they don't really want to end up a footnote in that they were the greatest metal band ever and then they got soft and lost their edge.

The difference is that this is THEIR choice not someone else's. Why is that so hard for people to understand? It is the difference between giving someone a dollar and someone taking a dollar from you without asking and giving it to someone else. You can’t argue with that logic. Even if you are a millionaire you have the right to protect what is yours and what you have earned and NO ONE has the right to take it from you without asking. Every band believes that but Metallica are the only one's with the balls to say it.

Metallica has been okay since "Justice", but not the same. If you listen to their early albums like "Kill em all" and "Puppets" , there are just layers and layers of guitar solos. It's almost like four or five songs merged into one. Songs like "Four Horseman", "Am I Evil". and Master of Puppets" are epic songs with layers and layers of guitqat work. Everything after "Justice" kind of sounded different. The songs became shorter. The guitar solos became limited at best. It's like they stopped trying to outdue themselves.

On top of that, James' voive really has suffered, especially lately. Simply go to youtube and watch live performances from 1989 and then 2005 of the same song. Not even close.

All that being said, I like these guys. Some drop off can be expected. I just hope they listen to a few of those older songs like "Four Hoursemen" before they bagan recording, and try to make music in that mold so we can enjoy them for a few more years.

Then, we get the Black album and although I liked it, I could tell something changed _ I remember feeling uneasy. We kow what happened after that- a string of good rock albums, 2 experiments( SnM and Anger) and a couple garage interludes thrown in. Metallica still has my utmost respect though. It angers me to see the venom spit out against them-I am excited to hear this new album because I think Rubin sat them down and said-"You guys had to prove yourself at the beginning, now you have to prove yourself once again!" The metal community needs to be reminded on how good these guys were and are. Bring it on boys! I pray the might Metallica is back....James- grow yer hair bro- I miss those bad-ass flowing locks! atottobc2 hit the nail on the head. The United States is a total mess right now. It's not just the economy either. It's our culture, and social rights that are being flushed down the toilet too. Everything from not being able to have a cigarette in a public place, the government's continuing pointless war on weed, everyone's selfishness/obssession with themselves (even I am guilty of that one too), and a whole bunch of other issues. Then we have shooting sprees on peaceful landmarks like college campuses. We have more turmoil here than in Iraq.

Yeah movies, and music are not nearly as goog as they were in the 1960's, 1970's, and the 1980's. There are some good remakes like the Amityville Horror remake from 2005. Also, we have pop stars making a million dollars a week on tour. Who in the hell needs a million dollars a week?

Anyway, I think it is good that Metallica is trying to get off a record label. Metallica's music did not go downhill because they decided to change, and experiment with different sounds. They lost their energy, edge, and fell apart as a band.

I am curious to hear what the Bass will sound like on the new
album. Rob Trujilo is a great Bassist. The only thing I see lacking on the new Metallica is the vocals.

When the Black album came out, people said they completely sold out and that album was fine. It's Load and St. Anger that suck. Reload has 2 or 3 decent songs. The Garage Days re-issue was awesome, and the album with the San Francisco symphony orchestra was a good idea.

I am a bigger Black Sabbath and Machine Head fan than Metallica fan, but Metallica did set standards for Heavy Music.

Some people WAY above stated that it was hypocritical that Metallica are now embracing downloading. How so? Metallica never had problems with the downloading of their music. They had a problem with downloading their music for FREE! I guarantee you that when Lars talks about you downloading Metallica's music, he means downloading at a premium: $$$. And, if you've ever recorded some songs before with your band, you know that it costs money. If all people downloaded music for free, there would be no bands anymore because bands couldn't stay in business. Just think about it
