NINE INCH NAILS: New Album 'The Slip' Available For Free Download
- May 5, 2008
|
|
NINE INCH NAILS has made its new ten-song, 44-minute minute album entitled "The Slip" available for free download at www.nin.com (free signup required). The new set includes the songs "Echoplex" and "Discipline" which were both posted online during the last couple of weeks ahead of the new album release. The music is available in a variety of formats, including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE (licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial ShareAlike license). All downloads include a PDF with artwork and credits. For those of you interested in physical products, the band plans to make a version of this release available on CD and vinyl in July. "The Slip" track listing: 01. 999,999 02. 1,000,000 03. Letting You04. Discipline 05. Echoplex 06. Head Down 07. Lights In The Sky08. Corona Radiata09. The Four Of Us Are Dying 10. Demon SeedAll songs were performed by Trent Reznor, Josh Freese, Robin Finck and Allesandro Cortini. NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor released the instrumental "Ghosts I-IV" album online on March 2. The two-hour collection of 36 untitled instrumental tracks was made available in various high-quality DRM-free formats at different price levels. According to a press statement, a total of 781,917 copies of the project were transacted at NIN.com in the first week of release, including paid and free downloads, plus pre-orders for physical editions of the set. The total gross earned was reported as $1,619,420. The expensive "ultra-deluxe" limited edition of "Ghosts I - IV" sold out almost instantly despite a steep $300 price tag. A digital version is available for five dollars, along with a $75 limited edition "deluxe" package. "Echoplex": (Thanks: Harriet / Zef / petehagen)

but Year Zero was great; those who say otherwise either didn't give it a chance or had unfair expectations: like hoping for a Downward Spiral II.
as most have said, hail Trent. in a new era where most established artists are bitching about the the loss of the good ol' days, Trents embraced the new media and has been generous and fair with fans.
way to go, Trent. and i'm glad to see some metal fans open to this non-metal artist.
cheers.

Strongly disagree "Year Zero" was awesome and abrasive back to his industrial roots instead of the radio friendly stuff found on "With Teeth"... To bitch about "Ghosts I-IV" is pretty sad as it was $5 and very good mood music for just relaxing. Now we have this new album which so far sounds a lot more like "With Teeth" than "Year Zero" and it is totally 100% free... and yet you still bitch. I guess you should just admit that you are not a fan and move on from this band.

Music isn't free to create - why should it be free?
People are willing to pay $60 for a video game but want their music for free.
New bands have no hope if they are expected to give their music away for free.

Fuck the music industry and fuck the RIAA. Trent is proving that this can be done and be profitable if given a real opportunity.
Here's hoping more artists follow suit and give the music business "The Slip" too.
Great album too.

i haven't looked into the details of this album, but with Ghosts Trent offered free, lower-quality options, and paid higher-quality options. he made over $1.6 million doing this, by the way.
that's the answer: give away low quality downloads for free. if a consumer doesn't like it, he doesn't buy the higher quality version. if he does, he pays a fair amount ($5 - $10, i would think).
this is totally doable on a small scale for indie bands.
as it was said, it gives the control -- and profit -- to the musican's themselves.
don't fool yourself thinking that only a big record company can push a new band. in the early days of the thrash scene, bands used demos to generate a "buzz." no record company involved till later. with the internet, that "buzz" can be multiplied exponentially.
of course you need good music to create and sustain the buzz. shit bands with great marketing will not surive. and that's good.
i heard about young new-wave thrash bands because of the buzz on this site; not because of a video, or a fancy ad paid for by a record company.
for music like metal, it has been a successful model and will continue to be.
people are just ironing out the details with the new media and technology. but it's beginning to take form.
cheers.

Great song, and probably good album. yea and who gives if its radiofriendly or not? it isnt that radiofriendly. its so difficult to be a guy like Reznor, if they make make a less complex album then usual then their fans dont like it and it wont either maki it for the public. but if a radiofriendly band make a little more complex record they are suddenly gods wich is very stupid, it happened with the last Green Day album wich wasnt that good. its good effort from Reznor, Radiohead and Pucifer, but still i like to have a cd rather then download, have a cover and lyrics and who produced the album and who plays on the albums, its much better then download. and the free downloading music from torrent sites should be stopped, unless its 1-2 songs from the artist himself showing examples of new albums. artist should get paid like any1 else. yea and shitty bands with lots of marketing wont survive but still get maybe 1-2-3 records out and get loads of many while some other much better band wont get nothing and even quit!
but NIN are great and Reznor is a genius!!!!

While it may be initially rough on new artists trying to make it and having to compete with big artists giving away music, the industry itself (read: musicians, artists, bands) will evolve and follow what NIN and a few other bands have done with this new way of distributing material. The record label industry will not likely survive this new trend but the free music concept won't kill off new bands as some people suggest rather I think it'll do a few things:
1.) With no more major labels, bands will only 'make' it if they become successful musicians making quality music that a group of fans will enjoy, bands that are 'in it' just to get famous, get laid, or get money will only achieve that status if they are good enough in the eyes of the fans. Today too many bands get popular only because major label cash is pushing their mediocre music into our ears all day every day, but with this new world of music people will choose what they like, independent radio and internet hype will push the hardworking bands to the top and the less talented to the bottom.
2.) Hard work might actually pay off for bands as oppose to the 'potluck' world today of getting signed. Bands actually will have to be passionate about their music but even casual musicians will be able to create a fanbase. Simply put the level of work a band puts into the band business (because each band will become a business in its own way) will pay off in the end with growing fan bases if their music is liked.
3.) Musicians who give away all of their music can't keep doing it unless their already wealthy and established like Trent is. Rather true music fans end up buying something from the artists they like whether it be CDs, clothes, merch, or tickets; without major labels taking big cuts for their own pockets, prices will drop and bands will receive all of their earned profits. How many times have people insisted that they use P2P sharing to listen to music (try before you buy) and often report buying something from the musician at some point. Bands that only have a radio hit get scared because listening before buying will become the norm and cds with all filler and just image won't sell.
I already said too much, but whatever this is awesome and I hope more bands realize they don't need major label idiots digging into their pockets and messing up their creative arts.

Brilliance. Plain and simple.
Reznor is beyond criticism. Great music from a great guy.
Funny how the arguments made by the detractors have no substance. This is great music, no question. I dig this a lot more than most everything else released this year. And it was free.

If you like NIN you might be interested in the album I just finished last month. It is also available free, donations are accepted. We are also doing a name your own price CD (starting at cost price). Politics Apocalypse is political and subversive post-industrial rock with an interesting mix of classical instruments, guitars, electronic beats, and a small dash of aussie hip-hop. You can download the whole 11 track album at no cost at our website. http://www.politicsapocalypse.com

a) it sounds like shit - The best reason you gave.
b) you could download a virus - You take that risk when getting on the internet, you don't have to dl anything.
c) takes up too much space - Delete some porn
d) don't want the CIA/FBI knocking down my door - Both agencies could give a shit if you dl music. If you dl child porn or bomb making instructions then I'd be worried.

Everything Trent is doing reminds me of how I was a couple years ago. I loved the idea of free distribution with lossless quality. I made some tracks myself that were kinda like that.
His nerdy obsession with lossless formats holds him back from making anything creatively impressive.
I admire his disgust with the music industry, but his music is fucking terrible. And yes, something along the lines of The Downward Spiral or even The Fragile would be great from the guy. I loved those releases.
Now let's look at Radiohead. They do the whole free release thing like Trent, except Radiohead still makes actual great music!
