Producer On New THE HAUNTED Album: 'No Click Tracks, No Triggers, No Faking It' - May 6, 2008
Swedish thrashers THE HAUNTED entered PUK studio in Denmark on April 1 to begin recording their new album with producer Tue Madsen (HEAVEN SHALL BURN, DARK TRANQUILLITY, MOONSPELL, etc), who had previously worked with the group on their two most recent CDs, "rEVOLVEr" and "The Dead Eye".

Madsen has posted the following update on his web site:

"This past month I have been keeping busy with THE HAUNTED!!! We were in PUK studios in Denmark to record the music and went to Gothenburg to do the vocals at IF studios [owned by members of IN FLAMES]. Peter [Dolving] had some weird shit going on in his mouth though (infection, operation, can't sing kinda thing)... so some of the vocals were done a little later at the Antfarm, where the mix took place as well. Pretty much all the music was recorded live in the studio!!!! No click tracks, no triggers, no faking it... just good old making music the way it used to be back when you had to actually be able to play your shit to do it. And we recorded 21 tracks!!!! You better make sure you get the special edition because at this stage I can't name one song which is not worthy of being on the album!! It's 21 great tracks I promise!!"

Peter Dolving previously stated about THE HAUNTED's new material, "It sounds fucking ridiculously heavy. It's all got a heavier groovier feel to to it than anything we've done before. I mean, even some of the new songs that are in the vein of 'Hate Song' or '99' just sound waaay heavier, for some reason. I have to leave the mixing room 'cause I get so jacked on adrenaline, 'cause it makes me want to break shit. And that is somehow a good thing."

A four-minute video clip from the studio can be viewed below.

Working songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Walk on Water", "Final Regression", "You", "Faultline" and "Narcotic".

I am totally pumped for this album. rEVOLVER hauled major ass, heavy and dark as hell. Dead Eye was a good album, a totally different direction from what we were used to hearing from the Haunted. If they can make claim that its their "heaviest stuff yet" then I think were gonna have one of the best metal albums released in a LONG LONG time.
Also cant wait to see them back on the road. Last time I saw them was when they came through Vancouver with Dark Tranquility, and the Haunted owned!.

How are you supposed to be right on time without a click track?. I mean, you don't want to sound like those hippie bands' albums full of mistakes. If they actually recorded it live, someone must have been using a click track i guess.

If you are a good drummer, you dont need a click track. You get a mechanical feel with one, especially if you do alot of time changes, and slow down/speed up type parts. This one should be good.

Mutt Lange said it best in a n interview once after recording with AC/DC....

Q - "Did you use a click track in the studio?"
A - "Yes... His name was Phil Rudd"

Click tracks are not an imperative. They are only necessary when utilizing samples, MIDI tracks, etc. As long as you have good musicians who can keep relatively good time, there's no requirement for one.

Tue mastered my band's record and did a fine job- my only wish is that we had more time and money to bring out the best of the record.

Hopefully the new Haunted puts them back on track as I found their last album too mid paced and boring for my taste- i think the idea of a concept album confines a band to stay too tight to a pre-decided formula and inhibits diversity most of the time- of course there are exceptions..

They're like Rise Against meets Still Remains with no emo factor?

Yeah, i mean it's really not imperative to use a click track playing AC/DC tracks, but The Haunted stuff is a lot more demanding drum-wise.

...enables you to record a couple of riffs, just one time, and then copy and paste them into the rest of the song.
That's one way of "faking it".

I can't wait for the new album! The haunted always delivers!
Rock on!

... "live in studio" and you know the stuff pretty well there's no need for a click track. Black sabbath made great records and on the first three album they played this way and even recorded bass and drum on the same track, and the same did a lot of more technical and precise bands.
anyway there's nothing bad in using a click track, and just because you use it, it doesn't mean you are "faking it". Technology can help you, but its capacity of make bad players look good is way overrated.
There's a bit of truth in it, protools is quite impressive "editingwise", but its power it's kind of an internet legend, in my opinion.

When you've seen The Haunted live, you know these guys have an "above the average" mastery of their instruments, even if their music is not the most technical shit out there

Anyway, these guys are tight as fuck.

Can't wait !!!

damn, i didn't know madsen had it in him. all his productions sound super-sterile. which, btw, is fine for some bands.

Zombie. is dead on man.

I'm recording in a studio right now with my band. You have to have click tracks. There is no drummer out there that can play an hour of music without a click and not ever be off .001 %. Most bands want their recordings to be perfect so that the listener can hear their music at it's best. Not these guys. They don't care. They are just throwing it together. The trigger comment is even funnier. I'm sure they are still eq'ing the drums to make them sound different than they would with just a mic sitting in front of them. They aren't just going to have the raw drum sound. What's the point of going to a studio if you don't want to make the sound better.

The Haunted used to be good. But that was a while ago. Their singer always says dumb shit too.

AT THE GATES should come back to full-time.

theres absolutely no comparison between drum triggers and guitar effects. effects have absolutely no effect on how you actually pick/riff/play. triggers actually make it easier to play fast beats. im not bashing them just saying you can't compare the two

Who ever said music should be recorded 'at its best' ? Most records I like have those little mistakes which adds to the feel of it. Remember that we're supposed to hear bands playing, not machines.

People here are speaking trough their hats, seemingly knowing very little about studio work. There are drummers good enough to work without a click track AND, using one isn't a crime either. It depends of what you're aiming at. Using sequencers and MIDI will obviously work a lot easier with a click track. If you're in for real feel and a more emotional performance, then the click can get out...Depends if you're Meshuggah or Ved Buens Ende.

BUT one thing is sure, so many bands are faking it on their records, and you hear it live! Drop the triggers and you'll immediately see the fakes out there. It's no use to play at 280 BPM in the studio if you can't back it with your real kit live. That is fake! Copy/pasting riffs, using auto-tune on vocals, sampling drum beats...that is faking it...as much as mastering the hell out of it to make it sound unreal. No one sounds like that but the kids out there are swallowing all of it like it was all true...
