THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN Guitarist Says DISTURBED Rehearses On-Stage Poses
- May 7, 2008
|
|
Andrew Tijs of Australia's Beat magazine recently conducted an interview with THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN guitarist Ben Weinman. A few excerpts from the chat follow. On the band's music being music being inventive but not willfully difficult: "We've always been a band that more than just incorporates many different styles. We've created our own style out of it. You hear a lot of bands that are eclectic but you can hear their influences clearly. "A lot of times people will say 'Oh, that rhythm is really crazy, how do you come up with that?' Well, we all look at that and it's obvious to us: we'll slow down and make it heavy or change the time signature around. To us it's just like using these influences properly." On whether they are deliberately trying to mess with people: "No, not at all. A lot of the time what we start off with is straight forward and simple. Then we, 'Dillingerize' it, for want of a better word. Just to make it more interesting for us. "Unfortunately for some people who are looking for an easier listen, by the time five months have passed and we're still working on this song, we've mutilated it so much from its original state that what seems normal to us might seem complicated to anyone else." On seeing DISTURBED soundcheck before an English show: "[They were] practicing where they were going to walk and when they were going to put their leg up on the monitor and pose. That was weird for us. There are times where I don't even know where I am." On influencing younger bands: "It's the biggest compliment, but it's hard for me to compare ourselves to these bands. Not being conceited, I just feel like we're coming from a different place." On having formed before it was even possible for a heavier band to sell huge amounts of records: "There wasn't MySpace and MTV wasn't accessible to these kinds of bands. So [being popular] wasn't even a thought in our heads. We truly started this band to create music that we wanted to hear. We had no intentions of doing this as a career. We came to this with the purest of intentions."

this is a prime example of lazy journalism, im sure ben isnt a fan of disturbed's style of music, but neither is he slagging them off here - of course, this story will turn into 'dillinger guitarist slams disturbed' in about an hour or so

Ire Works was the greatest album released that year, and I still can't put it down these days.
Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah and Battles, all three bands are from the future.

I love it when a band nobody cares about has to drag a better band into the conversation just to get people to talk about them. watch this will be on here for a week with him being misquoted and saying he wasn't putting them down and disturbed will have to respond. it would be be better if they just ignored them completely so they will go away! disturbed destroys this no talent wanna bs!

But DEP isn't even slagging Disturbed here. So they rehearse their poses on stage....if Disturbed really feels the need to respond to this in a defensive manner, then they are probably embarrassed. They aren't the first band to practice their moves.

LOL!
Kid, even if you don't like Dillinger Escape Plan's music, saying that they're not talented means you've never heard them, or you're just a complete tool.
Again, Disturbed is a band full of hacks that should've disbanded as we all graduated junior high. Dillinger Escape Plan slays that bullshit on their worst day.

...so with your above logic, putting on a shirt specifically for a performance would be 'posing', right?
I can't stand Disturbed, but when fans are paying huge $$ to buy a ticket to a show, it's nice to know that the band cares enough to at least TRY to be in a position to make for an entertaining performance visually.
I'm sure Judas Priest or Maiden never rehearsed a choreographed 'metal stance', huh?

Not a fan of Disturbed, but they're an easy target.
DEP are no stranger to posing themselves. In fact, they worse than Disturbed, because they try to hide it.

Not a fan of disturbed, though the use of 'Down with the Sickness' on South Park was nice. DEP has had a couple of cool songs and riffs along the way, but gets old with sooo many changes (you can't dip everything in mango chutney sauce).
IMO, it's nice that Disturbed isn't telephoning EVERYTHING in, and chances are that there is some lighting or pyro that they have to synch into. I'm in a band, and while rehearsing I'll make faces or do moves of sort, why???
1) It's fun 2) Anybody that has ever banged his head over the age of 20 knows that the body isn't made to do for hours right out of the gate
Entertainment takes practice

I agree that the level of Journal-tainment on this site is quite weak. pathetic actually
I just have to add to this though: "IS the most overrated band ever.....they totally blow and there music is so cluttered ....so maybe you wanks need to practice before you go on stage!"

Oh and by the way, I remember watching a video of DEP performing on conan obrien a couple months ago, and, aside from the fact that the song they played was pathetically bad, the whole "kick the amp while the other guy jumps" or whatever amp was just as much rehearsed as anything out there. bunch of gay nicely dressed emo boys

All the greats rehearsed where they would be onstage. Especially if pyro is involved. Remember what happened to James Hetfield? Anyone smell burnt hair?

they only say things in the press that are necessary. They never respond to media attacks. They just do their own thing. Yeah sure, all their songs sound the same and not one of them stands out too well, but at least they dont kill their music with overpromotion (ala Nickelback).
And the only things ive heard from them in the press, apart from promoting their material, is slamming the RIAA for sueing people who downloaded their last album. Which is a fair call. Everyone downloads music, but those same people still buy albums for decent bands. if the RIAA put every music fan in prison, because we all download music, they would kill their own industry.
and DEP just seem to annoy me a bit

Disturbed sucks. I really do not like that band. And i do like Dillinger Escape Plans music (being oh so original or not).
But worte of all. i do not like reading interviews with Dillinger Escape Plan member.. EVER! if you want to know what i'm talkinga bout, run some searches and just start reading. "we dont have an image" as if thats not an image. Constant babble about themselves and ripping on great bands. Interviews with these guys are terrible and sensational. I bet every person in the band can auto-felate.

dillinger escape plan was good when they came out. i think their newer material is deffinately on the sell-out side. it would be pretty funny to see a band rehearsing stage poses but at the same time, d.e.p. practices swinging guitars around and everything else they do too.
