DAVE GROHL's 'Open Letter' To METALLICA
- May 8, 2008
|
|
Former NIRVANA drummer and current FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl has released the following "open letter" to METALLICA (via Metal Hammer): "Dear METALLICA, "Hey, it's Dave! Remember me? Yeah, I'm the guy that's been listening to your band faithfully since 1983. I bought your first album 'Kill 'Em All' from a mailorder catalogue called Under The Rainbow, I think. Actually I can't remember. It was 1983 for Christsakes! But that album changed my life and I've been listening to your albums ever since (even 'St Anger'!). "I can't wait to hear the new shit, and no matter what you guys do I'll always be first one at the shop waiting to hear it. I'm sure you'll come out and blow everybody's fuckin' minds, because you're fuckin' METALLICA! "Good luck. And don't release it until it's kick-ass. "Yours, Dave Grohl. "P.S. Are you finished recording the drums yet?"

Dave Grohl doesn't have any problem selling tickets to his shows, guys. I caught the Foo Fighters a couple months ago and although they aren't my favorite band, they put on an excellent, entertaining show and have a massive following.
A Foo Fighters/Metallica show would be pretty awesome though. Grohl is funny as hell and full of energy on stage. If you go to a FF show you're going to have a good time.

Stay true to your art. Don't release an album full of rehashed riffs from the 80's if that isn't what you want to do. Don't let the fickle masses decide for you what you should or shouldn't be playing. Don't let the record company decide that. I hated St.Anger and was unimpressed Load and ReLoad. That's one person's opinion. But did you as a band like it? Did you believe in it? That's what matters. I admire your willingness to try new things and not become formulaic. I hope I'll enjoy your next record, but I can never despise you for being true to what YOU want to do.

As much a Metallica sucks now how does someone from Nirvana and Foo Fighters (both alternative grunge bands) have any right to talk??? Dave Lombardo or Paul Bostaph have that right but not Dave Grohl sorry.
Dave, if 'Kill em All' changed your life so much why weren't you playing metal all of your life instead of alternative grunge? Oh I forgot metal wasn't cool in the 90's so now that it is you can admit how much you like early Metallica.
Save your advice Dave. Metallica's last 3 albums may have sucked but at least they had 4 in the bag to your 0!

Dave is an amazing musician. Foo Fighters has shit loads of metal influence in their songs. You can't even put them in a certain genre.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Everything up to St. Anger kicked ass in it's own way. There's no way Metallica's stupid enough to put out another St. Anger. I'm expecting a Black Album/Load hybrid. That's about as heavy as they can get right now and not sound like complete jackasses, which is fine with me because both of those albums kicked ass IMO.

this is a great album. I've liked everything before st. anger yes even load and reload. However when i bought st anger before hearing the whole thing it was probably the worst decision i've ever made. I listen to 6 songs before taking it out of the player and that was even pushing it. I do have faith that Rick Rubin brought them back to reality but i will be previewing this record before purchasing it.

I think it's just a stupid letter from someone who thinks his opinion really matters. Metallica don't give a shit about Dave Grohl. He can write hundreds of open letters, that James and Lars will just laugh it up.

It is great how Metallica is again the underdogs and how the supposed metal crowd has turned their backs on our heros. How the doubters sign up to bash, call them not metal and to say they have sold out and should quit and on and on. It has become a culture to dislike the very people that are responsible for the metal most on here love and call real. I have been a fan since 85 and remember when no one knew them and would tell me they suck and are to fast.....Now the metal crowd themselves are those naysayers and again Metallica feels like my band and underground in a weird way. It again is different and cool to be a Metallica fan. Wearing a Metallica shirt again means something, helps you stand out in a crowd and gets that same reaction it did back in the day. I cant wait for their new material and Grohl said it perfectly. Well put.

Judas Priest is responsible for thrash metal, not Metallica. Metallica may have improved upon it but they are no way the pioneers of thrash.
Funny too since metallica never gives a head nod to the Priest...ingrates. At least Mustaine does.

I can't believe people are still using this meaningless term. There was virtually nothing in common amongst the so-called "grunge" bands.
Mudhoney - Stooges inspired garage punk Pearl Jam - 70s throwbacks Soundgarden - What if David Coverdale sang for Black Sabbath? Alice In Chains - Sabbath inspired drug music
Anyways, Grohl is a cool guy. He's living every rock fans dream. The guy is obviously a fan of lots of different music and because of his luck in the industry has had a chance to work with Cronos, Lemmy, Brian May, John Paul Jones, King Diamond, and Tom G. Warrior just to name a few. Look at that list again. Wouldn't any rock fan just dream to work that list of people?

I liked St. Anger a lot.. much better than the Loads or the Black Album. It was really an interesting release in that it really didn't cater to the "Enter Sandman" crowd and "MOP" crowd. However, it's a solid Metallica album -- heavy, intricate, fast -- all hallmarks of the band.
Word on the street is that the new record will sound nothing like the 90's stuff, but a progression from St. Anger (which harkened back to their old style) but with solos.

Oh and I remember reading that Dave once covered an Unleashed song whilst he was in Nirvana, which gives him 50 extra kvlt bonus points.

Dave's been into metal since he was very young.
And remember - Cobain was a fan of Celtic Frost too. The heaviness of their debutalbum Bleach (before Grohl joined) was inspired by the early Celtic Frost stuff.
Just because you play a different style than thrash/death/black, does not mean that you don't like metal.

dave rules! he keeps his mouth shut when needed, and only opens it to make a point
as for metallica, heres a timeline of what went wrong...
1986: Cliff Burton dies; Metallica is emotionally fucked up 1988: They release Justice, only to realise that they can't play half the songs live 1991: They release the Black album, which is simpler to emulate live 1993 - 1996: They all start listening to country music, cut their hair, etc 1996: They release Load, which is more or less just hard rock with country influence 1997: They release the rest of their shit from the Load era on ReLoad 2001: Jason leaves the band, James goes to rehab, the band nearly broke up then and there 2003: After trying desperately to claw back any knowledge on how to play "real metal", they release St. Anger... which is the musical equivalent to fusing two halves of different cars together to see if it will last 100 miles, but ultimately fails and explodes
Today: They realise that St. Anger sucked balls, so they bring on good ol' Rick Rubin to produce something that may sound like progressive Slayer if done properly
Good album or bad album, I still want to see them live a couple of times in my lifetime

A few random responses to this article as I just drank 12 beers in a vain attempt to win an Ottawa Senators jersey after work and wound up with a Dallas Stars jersey (P.S.: Vinnie Paul, you might want to watch your mailbox in a couple of weeks or so):
1) Even though Dave Grohl's main and current meal ticket are borderline mediocre and rank among "St. Anger"'s better moments (which go beyond no longer than 2 songs) to dismiss his influence in metal and hard rock is nothing short of errorneous. The Probot and last Trouble and Danzig CD's should support my opinion on this. But not that godawful Nirvana reissue which he had no part of whatsoever and was solely another cash grab on Courtney Love's part to recoup some overdue bill payments to her dealer.
2) Alternative music better than most metal music? Not even by barely half. Yeah, fuck Exodus and Dream Theater. Give me Marcy Playground and the Presidents Of The USA, man!
3) I don't get what "DIAF" means. Besides "die in a fire". And it's a bit harsh against an ex-Metallica fan.
4) Mudhoney started off as a beggar's version of the Tragically Hip but seeing as the Hip have morphed into Death Cab For Cutie lately even a half-assed Mudhoney song overrules Gord Downie and company using their whole ass.
5) When will RiotAct666 reveal himself as Brian Posehn?

I don't believe that saying that Grohl is better that Ulrich would make any relevant point. They are both excelent on what they are doing so everyone that states a comparison between both artists probably has no substantial knowledge of music whatsoever. For those who like to bash Metallica no matter what: It's a matter of good taste; if you don't like it just drop it - don't hear it, don't buy it, don't waste time and energy on bashing something you don't like just because it's cool to badmouth others. Just listen to whatever you are into at the moment and leave other bands alone. Get stuck in the 80's if you like...listen to whatever makes you and your narrow little brains happy. About the letter: Dave's got a point; whatever those guys blows everyones minds away so I'm hoping that the new stuff will be as good as any other of their albums.

I don't really give a hoot about what genre label you want to put on music, but simply calling Alice in Chains "drug music" is retarded.

that was the gayest letter ever. I would just like to stress the fact that Metallica is horrible. They haven't put out a good album in 20 years. I am almost ashamed to listen to their old stuff because of what they have done. The black album is listenable, load and reload sounded like a completely different band and St. Anger was a pathetic attemt to go "metal" again. They are dead to me. At least Slayer, Exodus, and Testament are still putting out great albums.

If any of you want to hear the new Metallica album before it hits MissionMetallica.com on May 21st.....Just go to Youtube and type in "New Metallica album". Theres the whole album up there posted by this one guy named "Dragonballz420" or some shit like that.
Despite all the doubters, and haters that think Metallica has no heart in it for thrash, and metal anymore.....It is in fact true what the band has been telling us about the new album. It sounds like Master Of Puppets, And Justice For All shit. If you dont believe me, take a listen for yourself. And if Youtube isnt allowing the videos to play. Just download a program called "Save2PCLight" and rip that shit from Youtube, and listen to it from your PC.
Oh well, just thought id give you guys some info on some random Metallica/music/PC stuff.
ENJOY THE TUNES! I already did lol! Wikkid J™

Clearly you are missing my point completely. I never said this guy can't like various styles of music. I don't have any doubt he really does like old Metallica. It's the timing of when he said it!!
I would have loved for him to come out and say this in 1995 in the heyday of the alternative era (Nirvana, Foo Fighters). It would have lent metal some credibility in a time when people laughed at metal cause it wasn't 'The Cool Thing' or 'In Man' He didn't because he was afraid to take the heat!!
Now it's very easy to come out and say 'Kill em All' changed my life cause Metal is back in and seems to be socially acceptable. Now it's actually an insult to be labeled alternative or Nu-Metal. So by saying this now he is 'riding the trend' and trying to be 'COOL' by saying this. If metal takes another down turn the guy would probably deny ever saying he likes 'Kill em All' and try to make fun of it. That's the point!!
And to address Probot....What year was this album released?? Uhh 2004 or so. Yeah "metal is cool now so I will start playing it again.

I don't understand why people seem to think metal "wasn't cool" in the 90s, and it's somehow en vouge again. In fact, I seem to remember "Vulgar Display of Power" debuting at #1 in 1994, just as an example. You also had other bands achieving their peak success in the 90s (Type 0 Negative and Sepultura both sold a lot of records). You also had heavier bands that were hugely popular in the mainstream (Manson, White Zombie).
Basically, I don't think it was as uncool in the 90s as people seem to remember, and I don't think metal is as trendy today some people on this board are implying.
Also, to the guy above me, Grohl had been working on that Probot album for several years, if timing is such as issue for you.

Priest isn't responsible for thrash. lol. Do you even listen to Judas Priest?
Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer are pioneers of thrash. Judas Priest went Speed Metal and a little NWOBHM.

That was a cool letter. Dave is an awesome drummer and killer musician. He's an excellent song writer and his band right now is just as big as anyone. He's selling out arenas. How many rock bands these days can do that. Ozzy can't! Priest can't! Not by themselves and not in the States. Dave is a metal head, and so what if the Foo Fighters don't sound like Slayer! Live Dave is totally influenced by James though, but then again, who isn't these days? I know I am......I can't wait for the Metallica cd too!

"I think Grohl is giving Metallica too much credit. They don't have the heart to play thrash anymore."
Yeah, I think it's cause they grew up.
Something about a bunch of 30-40 year olds standing on a stage with long hair and black clothes moving their heads up and down real fast while playing instruments....seems kinda childish (See: Slayer, any other typical metal band today).
Metallica owns your asses. They couldn't give two shits about some anonymous loser hiding behind a computer screen. Go back to your Gorgorath and Necrofagist...I think mommy just preloaded your ipod in the basement.
Metallica is the only thing giving metal some dignity right now. Get over it.

Been into these for 20 years now.....Fuck how time has flown... Like them up to the Black album. (Garage revisited disc 1 was OK too).
Haven't played them in about 2 years. Just playing them now as this put me in the mood.
I only listen to metal a few times a week.
Usually classic stuff, not much new stuff gets me going.
The only thing that makes me think the new album will be a return to form is because Rubin is involved.
Let's wait and see...

If you ever heard any interviews of Nirvana back in the day, you would know that they were very open about talking about whom they listened to or influenced them. There influences varied, from punk to metal, to the beatles and others.
To many of the other posters: I believe the word you're looking for is SARCASM.
Also as far as alternative v. metal. Someone posted Marcy Playground and Presidents of the USA as alternative...There was nothing alternative about those bands. Alternative by definition means not in the mainstream. These were mainstream bands. Most metal bands from the 80's and 90's can be considered alternative because they were not mainstream.
Unlike Metal, Alternative is not a sound. At some point in time a band like Alice in Chains was just as alternative as The Cure, but you could never say that these bands have anything in common musically. They are very, very different.

it's really sad that we still have people sticking up for metallica. if you listen to metallica now you might as well be listening to linkin park or puddle of mudd or whatever trendy shit it out there. metallica is dead. get over it. they should just change their name and id be happy. If you are an old school metallica fan it makes no sense to listen to the new shit. why? I am an old school metalhead and I still get invigirated when a band like Exodus or Testament or Overkill still puts out great thrash albums. I liked the music back then and i still love it. I found something i liked and still like it and stuck with it. Don't give me shit about bands growing up or maturing. Does Slayer sound like they did in 83? no! but they still put out great thrash metal. their sound has matured.

Problem with nineties metal is that alot of it was bereft of the trappings that made it so cool in the eighties- like great shred solos (other than Dime if you count it), great dual harmonies, etc. Also, it was "cheesy" to write about stuff that wasn't "urban", hence Pantera's lyrics, Machine Head, etc. Its just that White Zombie did it in a more ironic way so they were tolerated. 90's were a fucking wasteland in the states for metal. Trust me, I tried to form power metal/prog bands back then and nearly everyone wanted to play grunge/alternative even if they liked a few of the "token" bands. It wasn't that the underground wasn't there, but I didn't discover it til the mid-late nineties, like some of the black and power prog metal bands from Europe, etc.
What's different now is that people don't think Iron Maiden is a "hair band" out of pure ignorance, they say "oh yeah, they rock" and also you have kids listening to black metal, etc, Hot Topic selling TRUE metal shirts (though alot of poser stuff too) and kids mixing it up, Trivium giving props to the old school shit (much to many people's chagrin), dual harmonies and shred solos are back (even if in a lot of shitty metalcore), etc, I could go on and on. Overall the paradigm has shifted, though its still not at the apex it was in the eighties in my belief. Its WAY BETTER than the Nineties though, but not a HUNDRED PERCENT turnaround.. I hope that made sense.. Where's Nordic Metal when you need 'im?

"Metallica is the only thing giving metal some dignity right now. Get over it"
LOL, HAHAHA now that my friend is the biggest pile of steaming dogshit to write.!!
Say that to bands like Priest & Maiden, 'lica has nothing on them, they're not even in the same ballpark as them. True they are getting older (as is Metaliica) but they are both far superior in terms of musicianship, songwriting, musical integrity.
Most of all the old-school fans here agree that 'lica died after Justice in 1988, so that means they are fucking metal gods for only 4 f'kin good solid albums!?? KEA,RTL,MOP AJFA, and then 20 yrs of crap?? The volume of albums from both Maiden and Priest is so much higher anyway during the same time period, true they have also released some shitty albums, but both bands also had to deal with singer changes , Metallica just has to deal with turning their backs on metal and completely fucking their integrity as a metal band......
Anyway, Dave Grohl seems like an ok guy, if KEA made him get into music and pick up a guitar than fucking great for him. Dave Grohl may not have that "metal" side to him as much as I would like, but he certainly has fucking intense energy and attitude when playing,
Nostradamus June 17, now that will give metal some dignityi!!!

then I grew up and realized that as an artist the only way to enjoy what you're doing is to create and expand your boundaries. Following the same template time and time again only makes you hate what you are doing after awhile and the people buying your records can hear that coming through your songs, and they hate it too. The great thing about Metallica is that every album they have made has had it's own mood and focus to it. While most bands can only write songs, Metallica writes albums with their own spirit. Iron Maiden doesn't write albums, they write songs. Judas Priest..same thing. You could take any song from the various Iron Maiden albums and mix them together and you really wouldn't be able to tell if this was a greatest hits or a new record. Metallica though, you can hear the progression and evolution each album has had and differentiate between the various moods each respective album has had. hat's why a greatest hits comp for Metallica would never work. Each album is a greatest hits comp!

I'm confused then about your definition of Rock. So "alternative" rock bands and punk rock bands are not 'Rock' to you....but I would guess that you believe that metal is Rock. So....is metal the only thing you consider Rock? Just wondering because Rock to me includes many different styles of Rock.
Also, many here keep using the word 'alternative' to refer to a genre of music...it is not.

Hey Everybody, (posted on May 12, 2008 by Foo Fighters) Just wanted to write a quick note to clear up this whole "Open letter to Metallica" fiasco......For the record, I never "wrote" anything to Metallica. I was asked by a journalist, at the end of a long interview (abut the Foo Fighters) to give a quick message to Metallica in the studio. So, I rattled that quote off the top of my head. No biggie, right? Somehow it became my "open letter" to the band, and now it's been picked up by everyone from Blabbermouth to Rolling Stone (as if anyone really cares!). Now, it's true that I've been a loyal fan of this band for 25 years, and I can't wait to hear the new shit, but an "open letter" to the band?!!?? Nah. Not my style. I'd rather just text 'em......
OK.......just needed to get that off my chest. Hope you guys are good. Thanks for coming out to the shows, they've been a blast. Only a few more before we crawl back into our cave and hibernate. It's gonna be a loooooong winter.......

As a long time Metallica fan I am really looking forward to the new album. I do not think that we need to worry about the big M's new album as firstly Rick Rubin would not allow an album to go out if it isn't 100%. I think a lot of us were astounded by St Anger, when a band who could afford the best producers, purposefully made an album with a lo-fi sound as well not allowing Mr Hammett the opportunity to show off his skills.
This time round Metallica will be out to show us all that they can still deliver the goods, although the trash mantle now can be handed to Evile for they will soon follow Metallicas bootsteps.
I am convinced that they will make sure that they do not repeat the Load-Reload / St Anger hiccups and put togther a blindingly good album - they will rule again, give them the chance to prove themselves.
