METALLICA's Online 'Mission' Is Officially 'Live'

One day after a "beta" version of the site went live — only to be shut down a short time later — METALLICA has launched MissionMetallica.com to offer fans a wealth of exclusive content and teasers of new songs. According to Billboard.com, a preview clip — which can be viewed below — shows the band recording and clowning around in the studio. Fans who sign up will be eligible to "win backstage passes to every show this summer," among other special offers. "Mission: Metallica" also has a "platinum" level, entitling fans to a copy of the new album delivered on street date, weekly "fly-on-the-wall" video clips, contests to travel to shows and/or METALLICA's San Francisco compound, live show downloads, ringtones and more. METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told a Los Angeles radio station last Monday (May 5), "We thought, instead of doing the usual DVDs and all that, why don't we just do it on the Internet and people can kind of tune in every day, watch clips, contests, get updates for what's going on with the record and kind of watch the last couple of months of song titles, album titles, final mixes...So it's kind of a little bit of a countdown type of thing. It should be fun." Ulrich also told the station, "Knock on wood, this week should be our last week in the studio," adding that the group expects to get its ninth album out in September. METALLICA will top the bill for the annual "Weenie Roast" festival sponsored by Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM. The show, scheduled for May 17 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, California, will also feature sets from THE OFFSPRING, THE RACONTEURS, RISE AGAINST, PENNYWISE, THE BRAVERY, SEETHER, SCARS ON BROADWAY and more. Ulrich said that fans can expect to hear new material "about five minutes after we finish playing it — thanks to the Internet," although he did not say how soon the band will begin playing some new songs live.

first post! thankfully, this new shit sounds soooo much fucking better than both loads and st anger. some of the riffs sound thrashyish, but i the vibe is still pretty "edgy", kind of like load combined with the black album. im not completley dissapointed but i thought it would be atleast as heavy as the black album.

the clip of that new song at the end of the trailor does sound better than anything they've released in over a decade.
who knows. it could be good.
wish kirk would give the wah a breather though...(aside from nothing on st. anger). i'm glad he's soloing again...but every solo sounds the same with a wah all over it.

Alright, finally some riffs! Can't wait til every song is released in its entirety. Then, we'll all know the strength of this "Mission". Being a fan since the very beginning (Yes, I am old- 40!) I like what I hear in the snippets. I hear heaviness, melodies, and tight, sonic riffage and blistering solo work- all in a 20 second clip- can you imagine the entire approx 8 minute long songs??!!! Awesome shit boys...daddy likey! Go to hell screamo metalcore shitstains-In September- the metal gods will show you all.

Well, I can get to the site by google, of course, but when I get there it is just that same screen as before, ya know, with the logo and "coming may 12". There is no video to speak of. This is like the twilight zone.

That's incredibly odd that its not working. Try refreshing the page. Regardless of what country your in it should work. Check youtube also, it might have the new(er) preview.
Here's the lowdown though:
The guys are jamming some new material, Lars talks to Rick Rubin about the click track, Rob raps as a joke, James talks about his guitar's crunch and about playing straight into a DI, not via amp, and then Lars plays some more drums. Its short, maybe a minute and a half.

The "get a preview" video showed some better stuff than what went online yesterday. And I like how Rob seems like he has taken the role of court jester--he's clowning on Lars pretty hard, not to mention showcasing his freestyle skills! Maybe there is some cause for optimism.

james' voice sounds weak as hell. i really never liked metallica, and there attempts at trying to sound more mainstream (please, kids, don't argue) are lame. i don't see how people are saying the new riffs sound good. they sound like stuff they've been doing the past few albums. perhaps i'll be wrong. but we won't know until we hear full songs.
megadeth took a more commercial approach as well, but they're 90's stuff was really good, i thought (except risk and some world needs a hero stuff). it sure as hell wasn't thrash, but it was good solid hard rock/heavy metal music with good riffs/solos, good melodies, and all around good musicianship. and they're last two albums were great, especially the last one. not a glorious return to form everyone hoped for, but a solid album.
i guess all i'm saying is... megadeth was ALWAYS better. i'm right.

History it will get re-written! :) the riffs remind me ride-master era..., the solo kill em all.. and the vocal voice black album - load.. however.. the vocal style is little aggressive.. and justice for all perhaps? ;) it's a kick ass combo all together!

I have to do this ... FUCK All you retards. I have been listining to them for ever - even have their first demo "Power Metal" .
Not all of its been good but its about the journey thats has been metallica - I will buy this new album and will always think of Metallica as the best ever metal band ...
If you all hate them so much what the fuck are you wasting your time here for . Do you really think any of the members give a shit if you like the album or not as long as you buy it. whether its to praise it or to piss on it....
The moral of the story is metallica is bigger than just one of their weaker albums they have been growing older with all of us but they have always been there with us whether it was justice for all, ride the lightning, black or SNM etc etc .....

When will you sniveling Anti-Metallica kids grow up and get a life ,I know that some of you Anti-Metallica kiddies jumped on the Metallica bandwagon then jumped off just to fit in with who ever you hung out with, In all of the years I have listened to Metallica I did not complain once with what they released because it was one of the few bands that got me listening to metal in the first place,Metallica's music also helped me later in life when I felt stressed out ,depressed,or even just pissed off ,Of course I did think Load,Reload,& St.Anger was bad albums but I bought the albums anyway just because I wanted to ,Also calling one a sheep for liking a certain band tells a lot about that person whom is so concerned about what people listen to, It tells me that you are a loser and a low life and has nothing better to do than troll around in threads and chat rooms,As for bashing Emo (Emotional)music....I notice that people treat it like its something new when it is not but I could careless about that subject ,But in truth No matter what style of music you listen to it will always have some sort of emotional feel to it be it Death Metal, Black Metal,Thrash Metal,Doom Metal,Etc.,IT DOESN'T MATTER!, Why don't you little sniveling Anti-Metallica fans just stay away from threads like this one if you hate them so much?
