MADONNA Rocks PANTERA During UK Concert
- May 13, 2008
|
|
Pop superstar MADONNA paid tribute to "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott by playing what sounds a lot like the main riff to PANTERA's classic song "A New Level" during her May 10, 2008 performance at Radio One's Big Weekend at Mote Park in Maidstone, UK. Watch the footage below. (The "A New Level" riff can be heard six minutes and 20 seconds into the video.) MADONNA's current touring guitarist and guitar teacher is none other than Monte Pittman, who has also recorded and toured with PRONG. According to Bug magazine, Pittman landed the job as MADONNA's touring guitarist after a man called the music store in Los Angeles where Pittman was working inquiring about guitar lessons, and Monte's name was passed along. That customer was none other than Guy Ritchie, film director extraordinaire and soon-to-be husband of Madonna. " Guy was my third student," Monte told Bug. "That was before 'Snatch' came out, and I didn't know who he was. It turns out he and Madonna were dating. He had just had some surgery done on his knee, I believe, so he was off his feet and she got him a guitar. He started taking lessons, and he got pretty good at it. I remember the day 'Music' [ Madonna's CD] came out, and I taught him a few things from it. I thought it would be cool for him to play them for her." When Guy returned the favor and bought Madonna a guitar, she started taking lessons from Monte as well. "It was the same thing as Guy — she learned everything I gave her," Monte told Bug. "She took it seriously, and worked really hard at it. She learned so much so quickly. That's one thing about Madonna — her drive is incredible." A month after Madonna started playing guitar, she got called to perform on "The Late Show with David Letterman". She invited me to come play with her, and I thought she was pulling my leg at first," Monte told Bug, "but she was serious." "A New Level" originally appeared on the PANTERA album "Vulgar Display of Power", which came out in February 1992. (Thanks: lillen pedro)

I kinda like that original Madonna song, and that was without a shred of a doubt "A new level" by Pantera. That was pretty awesome and unexpected. And if she wants to do a tribute to Dime, I think we should all respect that. She has nothing to gain from doing that but she did.

Considering that 98% of the people in that crowd had probably never heard Pantera and would be unlikely to make the connection if they had, I am skeptical that it was some intentional tribute.
Pop stars have their music written for them or they steal others music. Its a time honored tradition.

Well, considering she hops onto virtually every pop trend, don't be surprised if she goes metal once the major labels die off.
What next? Hannah Montana covering Morbid Angel's "God Of Emptiness"? The Wiggles covering Origin's "Antithesis"? Clay Aiken covering "Painkiller"?

She's more metal and has more balls than a lot of the guys in metal.
She has slaughtered some sacred cows and danced on a lot of lines that people feel you shouldn't cross.. She has gambled with her career, fame and income many times.. She could easily just relax, do nothing and live off what she's already done - but she's trying to improve, break new ground for herself and continue to take risks. I respect that.

Back in 1985 when Madanna toured, she brought along a totally unknown band of white rappers called the Beastie Boys. This was before Krush Groove dropped, and a year before Liscenced To Ill. I remember going to the show (talk about some hot chicks in the crowd) and being blown away by by those kids even though they got booed off the stage. No one knew who they were! I always thought Madonna was cool as fuck for doing it. Then a year later when the Beasties got big, I looked like king shit to my buddies because I had been running my mouth about those dudes forever.

Most of you stereotype macho-tough-metal-guys are total pussies and are "jealous" of your songs and "your" bands. It´s fuckin ridiculous for godsakes.
Citations:
"Oh it´s ridiculous, it´s fucking Madonna, it´s embarassing, oh my make up is melting..."
"She is stealing, somebody should arrest her... oh dear, I´m on fire now"
Fuck that!
She is paying tribute to Dime and she has Monte Pittman in her band for christsakes. And that was really cool to watch, in fact, I saw it three days ago and I still think it´s awesome.
At least she is not playing fucking WALK like every goddamned pseudo-metal or rock band does nowadays.

There's NO way she's actually playing anything by talented Musicians.
F**k me, will wonders never cease, I wonder if we'll see Metallica Vogue!
This is Lame, I think she should give up on her 'career' particularly if she's going to try this sort of thing. artists have their place. Dime's was on stage, Madonna's is in obscurity. Much like her husbands film making career.
I Dislike her, and Guy Ritchie hasn't yet made a film worth more than the Bargain bin of a very BAD dvd store.
I thought that this site was about discussing Music, not POP DIVA's trying to be 'cool' by playing 'metal' in order to get some Kudos.

But, truth be told, she is not a good singer, especially live.

So the biggest commercial poser on pop music MADONNA, who can not even play a guitar, she acts with a guitar on, as can be seen, plays 10 seconds of a riff from the way overrated band PANTERA, using on the same song (here is we she shows her huge talent) the main melody from ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)", and you all falling on your knees and saving grace with tears in your eyes because this is so wild, so cool, and so great, and "we should be honored".

She and her friends pissed off a lot of people at this show according to "the Daily Mirror" I think it's funny as hell, they pissed of people for eating, drinking alcohol and swearing
"“They arrived early and wolfed down free food and alcohol reserved for all the artists.”
The ‘4 Minutes’ singer also reportedly angered other performers by turning up late for rehearsals, leaving the schedules in disarray.
Madonna’s four-letter tirade during the live BBC broadcast caused a headache for the TV and radio bosses.
Introducing ‘Hung Up’, Madonna said: “You guys are going to have to stop f***ing it up out there because I need to feel some love. I’m going to do an old song, but not too old. F**k the present. Let’s live in the past.”
Hosts Zane Lowe and Edith Bowman were forced to issue a hasty apology after the set, saying: “An incredible performance from Madonna. That said, a quick apology for those people who might have felt the content offensive”

The tribute to Dimebag was pretty good.
Wished she had played the riff to "A New Level" in place of the way-overdone "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" so that I'd be spared having to sit through "Hung Up" (and "Gimme Gimme Gimme") though.

On writing "her" songs:
power
The power of good-bye (from the song of the same name) In the midnight hour I can feel your power (from 'Like a Prayer') You got the power to make me feel good (from 'Cherish') You can't make me cry, you once had the power (from 'Oh Father')
key / me / heart / open
Open your heart to me, baby / I hold the lock and you hold the kEy (from 'Open Your Heart') You're frozen when your heart's not open (from 'Frozen') Your heart is not open so I must go (from 'The Power of Goodbye')
learn / burn
How many suns will they have to burn? / Spanish eyes / When will they ever learn? (from 'Spanish Eyes') I've learned my lesson well / Hope I live to tell / The secret I have learned, 'till then / It will burn inside of me (from 'Live to Tell') You were my lesson I had to learn / I was your fortress you had to burn (from 'The Power of Goodbye')
door / more / before / anymore
They never laugh, not like before / She takes the keys, he breaks the door (from 'Till Death Do Us Part')
Even though we never met before / We got to move before the sun is rising / And you'll be walking slowly out the door (from 'Physical Attraction')
If you wanna see me anymore / If you don't wanna see me walking out the door you better think of me(from 'Think of Me')
I gotta get out the door / If I don't do it now / I won't get anymore (from 'Over and Over')
I can see you've been hurt before / But don't compare them to me / 'Cause I can give so much more (from 'Shoo Bee Doo')
When you walked out my door / I knew you'd be back for more (from 'Stay')
But I never knew love before / 'Til you walked through my door (from 'True Blue')
So don’t come hangin’ round my door / If you’re not ready to give / You’re not gonna get much more (from 'White Heat')
You're always closing your door / Well that only makes me want you more (from 'Burning Up')
home
And I feel like I just got home (from 'Ray of Light')
I hear you call my name and it feels like home (from 'Like a Prayer')
kind/ mind
I’m not gonna hurt you, I’m not that kind / We’re not goin’ nowhere ‘til you have a change of mind (from 'White Heat')
I'd like to think that I could change your mind / Don't say that I am blind / I know all about your kind (from 'Pretender')
Add a few mercenaries on stage, an unplugged black Les Paul, people behind writing her songs, an overdose of marketing and there you have: TALENT.
I feel so honored now because she is Metal.
(By the way, you guys don't have to watch the horrific 6 minutes, just scroll the button til there)

Are people stupid enough to ignore you can fastforward to the 6:20 mark?
Also, is it only me noticing she stole the "riff" of that old song from ABBA? No one mentions it but unless she paid full royalties for it (which I do not know) it's a total rip-off.
Madonna has no capital into playing a Pantera riff so I guess she did it for fun, or tribute, for the nostalgics among you.

FAV PANTERA SONG! I THINK THIS COULD JUST BE A RANDOM THING? BUT I BELEIVE ON THE INSIDE SLEEVE OF 'ANTHRAX', STOMP 442; THERE IS A PIC OF MADONNA AND SCOTT IAN! MAYBE SHE IS A METALHEAD?

Not sure if we could call her a true "musician".
Saying she sucks as a musician is like watching a comedy flick and getting pissed off because it's not scary.
See/judge something for what it is.
I don't find myself listening to Madonna, but I do respect her for being good at what she does. (which obviously does not include playing guitar...but I don't think she started learning to become a shredder anyway. Not exactly a requirement as an "entertainer", so "good enough" by the standards of her "occupation" I'd say)
Also...ABBA said that they agreed to let her use that riff because it's Madonna. (Good sample, but horribly underused, I think)
If you think Guy Ritchie's movies suck in general, in the world of movie fans, that's like a pop fan saying metal sucks in general... (of course, there are good metal and not so good metal. Likewise, I'm not saying all Guy Ritchie-type movies are good, hence the addition of "in general")

Is this really worth so much debate? This is just some pop star who fancied chucking out a metal riff. I really cant see her wanting to move into the genre and make money out of it. She isnt an amazing guitar player, but we all have to start somewhere? Look at Kurt Cobain and many other punk bands, they couldnt play very well when they first started out. Yeah, the effort wasnt to great, but she threw a spanner in the works and i respect that, and i respect the fact that she recognises metal. It really is no big deal.

Maybe the video clip wasn't all that happening...but the discussion to follow sure was, haha.
Being from Sweden I prefer hearing Madonna quick-covering Pantera any day over hearing her loop-sampling another piece of old ABBA CRAP. You can't imagine the dread of being a metal fan and living in the land of ABBA. It's fucking everywhere. Guess why I stay away from a radio?...
