ALICE IN CHAINS Working Steadily On New Album
- May 14, 2008
|
|
The Pulse of Radio reports that ALICE IN CHAINS is finally working on music for its first all-new studio effort since 1995's self-titled third album. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell confirmed that he, bassist Mike Inez, drummer Sean Kinney and new singer William DuVall have been writing songs for months, but told The Pulse of Radio they're not rushing to start recording. "We've been working about the last four months, and there's a good bulk of music and a good body of work so far, and we're having fun, and you know, we're taking our time and trying to figure out where William fits in and where we need to step up, and I have all the confidence in the world in the guys," he said. "The most important thing to me is that we're all together and, you know, it's been a tough and painful experience at times, but it's been very rewarding at the same time." ALICE IN CHAINS has tentative plans to release a new album by the end of this year, although the group has not begun recording or selected a producer. ALICE IN CHAINS officially regrouped in early 2006 after a 10-year absence with DuVall stepping in for late frontman Layne Staley, who died in 2002. The group did its own headlining tour in the summer and fall of 2006, followed by a 2007 co-headlining jaunt with VELVET REVOLVER. Cantrell said he doesn't expect ALICE IN CHAINS to play live in 2008 unless a special event comes up or until there is a new album to promote. fuck the haters, we wouldn't have had Back In Black if AC/DC stopped
having seen Duvall, he fits the song but does not copy Layne. He's legit, I was blown away when I saw them in a small club in NYC.
Good for them

I just wish Jerry would handle all the vocals. MTV Unplugged proves he's more than qualified to do so.
BUT, I'd rather deal with Duvall and have an album of new AIC than have another sub-par solo disc.

Read the headline. It's AIC, buddy.
Layne was amazing. One of the best frontmen ever and the genuine article. He couldn't control his deamons and he lost the battle. He's gone. The rest of the band took ample time off , have respected his legacy, and will continue to respect it. There is no reason for them to quit playing all of the great matrerial they've created and to continue creating great AIC songs.
Change the name? Change your diaper, dude.

I'd have more respect for the band if they didn't replace Layne and went out with just Jerry singing. William is an "okay" replacement at best. Why can't a band end a legacy the right way by not using their original name for a change if they were to continue? $$$, that's why.

Hopefully, Duvall will sound better in the studio than he does live. Either way, this will sound less like Alice in Chains than Jerry Cantrell's solo material, since Cantrell has a vocal style similar to Staley's.
And I'm all for bands continuing on when they lose a member, even a crucial member, but AiC is a drummer change away from totally being Cantrell's solo act. Inez has been around for a while, but all the classic AiC material was done before he showed up. He's really just a replacement too.
No matter, though, Jerry Cantrell is one of the best guitarists around, and I'll take new material from him however I can get it.

While I will probably buy the CD, I will NOT see AIC live.
Layne's voice had the pain and emotion needed for the songs(especially the ones off 'Dirt'). The only suffering DuVall looks like he's had is trying to get the cap off the aspirin bottle(which is the only drug he's probably ever done).

Great band and i saw them with Duvalle and he was very good, and i hope they make a new record. Jerry's solo albums where great. And they are having fun and good time and its that they play their music then some other band right??? Staley was not one of the best frontmans maybe but he was one of the best singers, lyricists, great musician!!!!!

Yes other vocalist have been replaced Bon etc....However Layne's voice and delivery was the force that separated them from other bands. Aic music is quite simple and Jerry's voice is ordinary at best. Don't get me wrong I'm a big Jerry and AIC fan but the spirit is not their with Layne gone. He was the best in my books and the only person I have heard that couls really pull this off is Maynard James Keenan. My opinion. Continue as you will its their band.

But the same goes with B. Johnson who was far from Bon Scott or even Travis Warren who's not Shannon Hoon, but you know what? Their fans (which I am) are happy that they didn't called it quits, just like I'm also happy that AIC went on for more. But I doubt that they're in it for the money because they're not ganna sell zillions of albums anymore and they now it already.

to see AIC with Layne twice once in 90, and once in 91. I think William does a pretty good job while keeping his own style.
p.s. Phil Anselmo sounded like absolute shit singing Would... Not even close!!!

The name of the band is not important here. If they decided to call the band anything else, there would be many who'd be saying "oh this is just Alice In Chains part 2"....... so what's in a band name these days????? You either want to hear the material or you do not want to hear the material. Personally, I don't give a shit what they name the band or if they continue to use the Alice In Chains name. It's not like Layne just up and left the band...... he's gone! Sean and Jerry chose not to continue for the better part of a decade and now they want to make more music together....... ROCK ON! Let us not forget that Mike Inez came in for Mike Starr who left (think he was tired of touring or something) during the Dirt tour.
With that being said, I am not a huge William fan... but he doesn't try to be a poor man's Layne in anyway (to me). I like the added versatility that he brings and if that's who the boys want to rock with..... then rock away. People still love Metallica, Megadeth and Black Sabbath...... how original are those guys??????????????
The face before me flies Laughs at me inside Masks are made to hide the glow Shining eyes Distance 'tween us grows feeding lies
It's hard to start things over You can feel the fire around us All the time Yeah
Something I should say It takes you every day What you give is not alive Today Your soul served on a plate Throw it away

cant wait for the new album. everything jerry touches turns to gold so you know the record will be killer.
as for the 'new' aic performing live... i saw them on the small club tour and it was amazing. agreed william isnt layne but seeing as layne's dead and you wont be able to find another one, duvall's more than capable as a replacement. he doesnt really try to sing the songs exactly like stalely did but rather puts his own little spin on the songs so it's a little different yet still the same solid aic material.
as for the sub-par solo discs... boggy depot was hit and miss but degradation trip (the REAL degradation trip two cd version) was amazing. one song after another was solid pretty well all the way through the 20+ songs. if you can find the two cd version, grab it and give it an honest listen, you wont be disappointed

More AIC is going to be a great thing. Seeing Jerry, Sean and Mike jamming together is amazing! I like William alot. I think he could do some great things with AIC. I totally agree that Travis Warren IS NOT Shannon Hoon, but he kills live and on their new disc. William has every right to be given a fair chance at this. I hope he shows us all he can handle the parts on the new cd like he does live with the old tracks. I'm on the edge of my seat for this one like I was for the new Blind Melon and it did not disappoint, at all!!

Personally, I would rather have a Jerry solo album, but I am just happy he is still here making music. So what if it is a cash grab? With the way music is now, who can blame him for wanting to make money? You'd all do it too.
And nyetfall, definitely pick up the 2 disc set for Degredation Trip. I found that the songs I like the best were on the expanded version. Boggy Depot is a great disc. It did not sound like AIC, and it didn't have to. Jerry's songwriting speaks for itself. It is refreshing that a singer can make an album without sounding just like his old band (what's that serj guy again????)
Jerry Cantrell is a god. Enough said.

Alice In Chains should continue and you could hardly call it a cash grab as if they are stealing money and using Layne Staleys name. Are they to continue they're career as a charity and record and perform for nothing? What if every enterprise through time ceased because someone died?

But not 7 years after he dies!!
Jerry Cantrell:
1. Recorded a solo album with AIC members minus Layne Staley after the last AIC album 2. Recorded another solo album with Robert Tralala and Mike Bordin, before the release date Layne Staley died 3. After Staley's death, Cantrell toured as a solo artist with WILLIAM DUVALL as the second singer 4. His solo career ended up with low sales, so he decided he would instead continue with AIC moniker with William Duvall just like his solo work.
Plus, Cantrell talked shit behind Staley before he died and bashed him out in a few of the tracks on his second solo album.
I'm sure the new AIC album will be good. But they should call it CROCODILE TEARS.
