DAVE GROHL Says His Message To METALLICA Wasn't Meant To Be 'Open Letter'
- May 15, 2008
|
|
Former NIRVANA drummer and FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl has posted the following semi-denial of his purported " open letter" to METALLICA: "Just wanted to write a quick note to clear up this whole 'Open letter to Metallica' fiasco... For the record, I never 'wrote' anything to METALLICA. I was asked by a journalist, at the end of a long interview (about the FOO FIGHTERS), to give a quick message to METALLICA in the studio. So, I rattled that quote off the top of my head. No biggie, right? Somehow it became my 'open letter' to the band, and now it's been picked up by everyone from Blabbermouth to Rolling Stone (as if anyone really cares!). Now, it's true that I've been a loyal fan of this band for 25 years, and I can't wait to hear the new shit, but an 'open letter' to the band?!!?? Nah. Not my style. I'd rather just text 'em..." In the aforementioned message, which was originally published by Metal Hammer magazine, Grohl wrote: "Dear METALLICA, Hey, it's Dave! Remember me? Yeah, I'm the guy that's been listening to your band faithfully since 1983. I bought your first album 'Kill 'Em All' from a mailorder catalogue called Under The Rainbow, I think. Actually I can't remember. It was 1983 for Christsakes! But that album changed my life and I've been listening to your albums ever since (even 'St Anger'!). I can't wait to hear the new shit, and no matter what you guys do I'll always be first one at the shop waiting to hear it. I'm sure you'll come out and blow everybody's fuckin' minds, because you're fuckin' METALLICA! Good luck. And don't release it until it's kick-ass. Yours, Dave Grohl. P.S. Are you finished recording the drums yet?"

Don't see how Dave's original message could be perceived as an 'open letter'. Whatever. Foo Fighters suck. Much hope for new Metallica. Their set in LA last night kicked ass- can't deny that they sound better live than they have in a LONG time.

Grohl: his approach to drumming is one of an very excited kid - and it almost always comes off sounding good.
In other thoughts:
I was surfing various Metallica-related websites when I came across the following - it's pretty funny too!
""So you don't like the EP? Are you out of your effing mind?
What about our aggressive, no-hold-barred take on Killing Joke's 'The Wait?,'" sneered a rather hostile James Hetfield, as he downed a double of JD on the rocks, and chased it with a Miller Light without even grimacing.
"Pfft," I said, making the best fart sound I could manage under the circumstances. "Fair enough," he countered, "but what about our cover of 'Crash Course in Brain Surgery,' originally recorded by Budgie? Isn't that a classic? Huh?" "Pfft." "This is insane," protested Hetfield, visibly shaken. "I hope you don't think that Holocaust's 'The Small Hours' is the aural equivalent of a Lars Ulrich underwear skid mark too..." "Pfft," I interrupted.
"Damn," growled Hetfield, taking another hearty swig from his quickly disappearing bottle of Jack. "I had no idea."
I began to smile, and tried my best to make him feel better about himself. "Look, James. It's not as bad as all that. Your version of Diamond Head's 'Helpless' kicks the original's whiney ass all over the place. Plus, I really enjoy your take on The Misfits' 'Last Caress.'"
"Really?," asked James. "Is it actually, err, any good?"
"It is. Not only that, but you truly sound scary - like a man possessed. I though for a moment that you were really capable of doing the creepy things you sing about in the song. Killing babies and all that - that's some pretty wacky shit you're talking about there."
"Wow, thanks man," whispered Hetfield, his eyes brimming with tears. We sat in silence for a moment, just staring at the now-empty bottle on the table. Maybe it was the booze talking, but somehow I knew what James would say next.
"You know what? Maybe I won't open up that other bottle tonight," sighed Hetfield. "Uh huh," I interjected.
"You know, it's just like what our therapist said in that Some Kind Of Monster documentary...," burped James, trailing off.
"What's that?," I asked cautiously. I winced as James drunkenly struggled to keep from passing out. I could also tell that he had wet himself again, but said nothing.
"What was I saying?...um yeah, now I remember....he said I drink because I need to feel validated by something, anything. Now I realize that I don't need booze anymore. I'm proud of The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited, damn it! It mostly sucks, but then again so does Lars, and we still keep him in the band! He's a talented musician stuck in a mediocre drummer's body, you know.
And if Lars is good enough for Metallica, then by golly, so am I! Even if I have a fake gruff Hell's Angel voice, that ain't gonna stop me from selling millions of records and shoving coke up my nose every single day!"
"That's the spirit! Thumbs up, James! Now you go and show the critics that St Anger was no fluke!"
Heh Heh...I found that at the following page:

I don't get it? Is there a problem with what he's quoted as saying? I didn't find anything offensive or anything about it. Reading the headline I assumed that he bashed Metallica somehow, but I'm not seeing it. So what's the big deal about this 'open letter' or whatever it is, that Grohl has to come out and clarify that it wasn't an open letter?
I'm confused. It's like no one can say anything about anything anymore without it being a big deal..

Nothing wrong with this letter, nothing wrong with Grohl either. He seems to be a cool dude who loves music. He can play every instrument and could make an album all by himself. He is a great songwriter also. So, explain to me how he "SUCKS"!?!?!?! Really, I want to know how a man of this talent and success could be worse than bad but actually "SUCK". How is that? Because you don't like his style of songwriting? That makes him "suck"? Ignorant people SUCK. Morons who dismmiss the word suck to a guy who doesn't suck - suck!
Metallica is one of the best metal bands ever just for what they did from 1982-1988. They could retire forever and always be one of the best just for those years! They were groundbreaking pioneers and unique, creative, and original! Not a big fan of what they did after "Justice" or maybe some of the "Black Album" but they are metal legends regardless! I have my doubts for the new album. Why shouldn't I? All I've heard is material taht isn't that great; however, if someone else wrote it, we'd probably be less harsh or judgmental on them. Since we expect more from Metallica we become more harsh. Maybe they didn't sell out that much but GREW UP? If that's the case, they need to become more immature again!

Everything he touches does really turn to gold. The guy is just prone for success. He loves music, plays everything and writes well whether or not you like his music, he is a great writer. Christina Aguliera is a GREAT singer, I just HATE the shit she sings. Doesn't mean she sucks though.
Not to mention, most everyone likes Dave except for Zakk Wylde who I think likes him now too. He didn't before he even met Dave.
I can't find too many flaws with this guy. I don't like all of his songs but some of his stuff is really cool. Overall, he's definitely got my respect. Seems like a mad cool guy who loves music and everything he touches turns to gold. Well put.

F@#k Dave Grohl. He's and arrogant over rated goofball. Yeah, he writes some great catchy songs, but you could barely fill up an entire cd with the best of his stuff. The good stuff is great but everything else just sucks. Foo fighters fans are people who think they are in on some little secret that nobody else could possibly get and just want to be old school Nirvana fans when they were actually listening to Busta rhymes and wu tang clan when Nirvana was still around. The Probot music was lame and just an attempt to look metal when metal came back. Wow, Dave you are so cool that you can just text Metallica. Wow I wish i was you..man what a God..he even performs his song unplugged...what a genious...weak drummer compared to the giants that are playing today. The drummer for the Foo fighters can play circles around him and he's no superstar. Dave has guys in his band that don't care that they don't have any musical input and probably don't have the ability to either. He is an arrogant Napolean complex frontman who thinks he is rock royalty because he got to back up another over rated hack that is only remembered because he blew his brains out.

By treading the thin line between irony and homage with Probot, Dave is the reason why hipsters are buying 1000 dollar Iron Maiden shirts "remade" by fashion designers. I don't like this "hipsters liking metal ironically but "sort of" " thing one bit. They were the ones MOCKING metal a few years back. Ok, Dave maybe not, but he sure as hell associated with a lot of people that did. People may bash Billy Corgan, but at least in the mid-nineties even he did interviews where he praised Priest, etc.
And then don't get me started on the Nu Metal bands bashing older bands "other than sabbath" up until the early 00's. I remember Korn bashing Carcass in one interview.
Then again maybe I care way too much about this shit and should get back to my job. Lol

Who really gives a shit if Foo Fighters fans are hiding a secret or if Dave's a goofball or if he made metal t-shirts come back expensively or if Probot was precalculated for the comeback of metal or any of that shit?
If you like his music - this is what matters. If you don't like his music at least know that this guy plays every damn instrument and writes what he likes which are often very catchy tunes. The guy is talented, like it or not. Personally, as I've said, the guy is talented, he writes some great stuff, some of it isn't as great, he loves music, and seems to become successful at any musical endeavor he pursues since the beginning of Nirvana. He seems like a pretty cool dude too. It's really about the music with me though. Tons of performers have big issues and aren't that cool. Rock stars are known for this repuatation but if the music is good tht's what matters. If you don't want to support the musicians because you don't like them, then download them.

Dave asks in his "open letter" (which actually wasn't an open letter at all but just some funny quote from an interview) if the drums for the next Metallica album are recorded yet. I know he's not serious but I am! I think Lars is a horrible drummer who lacks weight, groove and feel. He deserves credits for the metal stuff they did back in the eighties, but I think Lars hasn't played deasant brutal drums since 1990. Dave, on the other hand, kicks major ass as a drummer. Especially on QOTSA and PROBOT. Bring it on Dave!
