METALLICA: Soundboard Audio Recordings From Wiltern Concert Available - May 16, 2008
Soundboard audio recordings of several songs from METALLICA's May 14, 2008 benefit concert at the 2,200-seat Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles can be heard below. All proceeds from the show will go to the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, a nonprofit music school for low-income students that was co-founded by RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS bassist Flea. The opening act was SCARS ON BROADWAY, the new group featuring SYSTEM OF A DOWN guitarist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan. Money raised from the show will go towards programs, operations and scholarships at the school, as well as a summer camp program and funds for a new building.

METALLICA's setlist was as follows:

01. Creeping Death
02. Fuel
03. For Whom The Bell Tolls
04. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
05. ...And Justice For All
06. Sad But True
07. Disposable Heroes
08. One
09. Master Of Puppets
10. Battery
- - - - -
11. Last Caress
12. No Remorse
13. Enter Sandman

14. Fight Fire With Fire (with RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS' Flea)
15. Seek and Destroy

Check out pictures from Film Magic, Getty Images.

Tickets for the show went on sale last weekend at $200 each, with limited VIP seats available for $500.

METALLICA will also play this week in Tucson, Arizona on Friday (May 16) and Irvine, California on Saturday (May 17), both radio festivals. The band is also one of the headliners at Tennessee's Bonnaroo festival in mid-June.

As previously reported, MissionMetallica.com launched on Monday (May 12). A montage of clips from the band's history, as well as a shorter collection of footage from its recent studio sessions, were posted at the site, along with short excerpts of at least two new songs. Other bonus content and exclusive offers will be made available at the site, although it's not clear if and what fans will have to pay.

The new METALLICA album is due out this September. Its classic 1986 album, "Master of Puppets", is being reissued on heavy-duty vinyl on June 17, the third in the band's series of vinyl reissues.

Ok...your a Slayer fan so I will speak slowly.

Metallica...GOOD.

Slayer...not as GOOD. Me like same riff for 25 years.....GOOD.

Wheel...invented by caveman. It work GOOD. Fire....also GOOD.

Your mom's basement...GOOD.

Your chances of gettin some....not as GOOD.

Metallica defined an entire genre of music. Black Sabbath started it, Metallica perfected it. The other bands I mentioned were great, and ground breaking. But none of the other bands dominated the landscape of their chosen genre, while holding on to some relevance in that genre, fo as long as Metallica. Beatles, broke up...faded. Hendrix...died. Revered as he is, he was a bright star that burnt out before his time. Rolling Stones...well, they had their time, and then they became a commercial commodity.

Metallica, love em or hate em, are still the dominant topic in the metal world. 25 years into their career! I am sorry, those bands were great but Metallica endured. And the mere fact that half the people here dont even like Metallica but still feel the need to post, confirms their relevance.

BTW...I am in my mid thirties. And I do like Seasons In The Abyss. The other albums you can keep.

Ok, who is the biggest metal band? Dark Tranquility? Opeth? Behemoth?

Metallica has their best years behind them. I am not stupid. But I look to the future and will be curious to see if another band will hold their place in the pantheon of metal gods after 25 years. It's a tremendous feat, to be given respect.

The Beatles have a following to this day that out numbers the fan base that Metallica has, or ever will have. Fact.
And to try and tell me that The Beatles didnt "dominate the landscape of their chosen genre" to the scale that Metallica did is Pure Poppycock.

"Rolling Stones...well, they had their time, and then they became a commercial commodity."

Riiiight..... Because Metallica NEVER became a commercial commodity, right?

Oh, and to respond to MORE of your cliche's (do you ever run out of them?)

Yes, I am a Slayer fan, but I like all forms of music. I am the farthest thing from being a fanboy.

Of course, if your criterion of bigness is commercial success, then they are the biggest metal band in the world.

Now, who is the biggest metal band? I do not know. There can be no biggest metal band.
Still, the likes of Satyricon and Darkthrone come to mind.

You sir are a dumbass!!!

The human voice is in a constant state of change and development just as the whole body is in a state of constant change. A human voice will alter as a person gets older moving from immaturity to maturity to a peak period of prime singing (31-34 years old) and then ultimately into a declining period.

Hetfield's voice was in it's peak on the "Wherever I may Roam tour" and 3 years of solid touring and vocal abuse behind the Black album is what destroyed Hetfield's voice... He's never been the same since. So your assertion that Bob Rock destroyed his voice is laughable at best!

In response to your little spat with one4havok.

Metallica may not have been influential in music in general, but they sure as fuck started REAL heavy metal. Sabbath and Priest may have led the way with more distortion and more speed than the rest of the guys out there.. but Metallica invented that edgy, thunderous CRUNCH, that is metal guitar today. That, coupled with drums, vocals, and bass that all flow together flawlessly, yet have enough minor differences to make it interesting, have made metal what it is today. Metallica made metal intense and interesting. They made your mouth water for more. NO other band that started at the same time they did(or before them for that matter) can take credit for the kind of metal euphoria Metallica provides.

That said, is anyone else tired of talking about Metallica(negative or positive)? It seems like we get on here every day and fight about whether or not Metallica still deserves another listen. Lets all face it.. they do. Whether you hate them or not, you know you're going to check out the new album just to make sure your ideas about them are still solid.

Dave Mustaine has wrote some great music in Megadeth but in my opinion (again, MY OPINION for the assholes who can't interpret), the best work Dave Mustaine ever did was with Metallica, I don't think anything he's done in Megadeth was ever as good then the select songs he wrote with Metallica, other than The Mechanix since he wrote that before he was in Metallica.

Which can make an argument that Dave and James, Lars and Cliff all made each other better and maybe neither side was ever as good as they could have been. But again, both bands have some amazing music and no disrespect to Kirk Hammett whatsoever but imagine if James, Lars, Cliff and Dave had continued to create music together, it might have be even more masterful.......or disasterous, who knows? ALL IN MY OPINION.

The true Metallica fans are the fans who give respect where respect is due. The true fanboys are the guys who gave up after "Metallica died" in 1991. Thats right. You true metalheads, who still worship Devin Townsend for keeping that ridiculous amount of Crypt Keeper hair on his head. Better yet, worship Slayer for their faux satanic image and hot topic brand of "evil". You're no better than the kid in the sideways straight brimmed hat.

As much as I like Megadeth, Mustaine is a cry baby who still wishes he was in Metallica. He knows he will always be the generic alternative. The Flavorite Brand Macaroni to Metallica's Kraft Shells & Cheese. Yes, he's written riffs that Metallica has used. The same can be said for him stealing riffs and concepts from Justice or Puppets.

I truly enjoy music, of all types. This is probably why I can't stand Slayer. They have been on repeat since 1982. Monotone singing with the same guitar scale used on every solo. Some people are a bit too smart to keep buying the same regurgitated riffs and teen angst attitude from guys well into their 40's.

I'll stick with the proven champion.

PS.

You girls shouldn't waste your time posting stuff about a band you "hate". It really contradicts the idea of not caring. Giving attention to something you "hate" means you have a repressed obsession. It's ok! Let it out! Say it with me.... "METALLICA FUCKS YOUR MOM".

HAHAHA... "Don't be a moron, idiot!" Thanks for proving my point!

I'm sure you remember when Metallica died... your mommy was still wiping your nose!

Any old school faithful Metallica listener with any "common sense" will remember the many pics of various Metallica members wearing Danzig shirts back in 88 or 89 and after... Any old school faithful Metallica listener will also know that Hetfield is a friend and huge fan of Pepper Keenan and Corrosion of Conformity. Take that information and make the connection... Given that information it should be obvious that while Load was a departure from the first four records the intention was to take the music in more of a Sabbath/ Corrosion/ Danzig influenced direction. 2x4 is a great example of that! I prefer the first four records over anything in their discography but I also appreciate the fact that they've had the balls to change their sound in drastic ways throughout their 25 year career.

You may call it a sell out, but if anything at the time it was more of a risk. The safe approach would of been to release the same record over and over again rehashing riff after riff like some other bands from that genre. Not bashing on them but Slayer for one...

This shit has been going on since Metallica released "Fade to Black" in 1984 and I remember that... I can pretty much bet that you don't.

All members of Metallica grew up on Aerosmith, Sabbath, Deep Purple, before they discovered the NWOBHM material that influenced their earlier works. If they want to make a move back to "their" roots then it's their creative liberty to do so!
Did Load sell more copies than the Black Album? The answer is no...

So if you call creative musical evolution a sell out... you're a close minded jackass!

p.s.
The only people that use the term "sell out" are immature little street cred craving bitches like you!

haha i was just logging in just to say that lars is afraid to hit the kick drum these days. Lars is a good drummer but no where near excellent. That dumbass is too damn lazy to use the kicks and he tends to add too much extra to the rest of the kit. The rest of the band seems to play what was "written" back then, why the fuck cant lars do the same. Not hatin on Metallica kids, just lars. He seriously needs to get kicked the fuck out of the band. And before all of you newschool metallica fans start bashin on me for this one, remember this...Lars came from a time when thrash began. Look at alot of the other older drummers out there in metal bands. Vinnie Paul, Paul Bostoph, Dave Lombardo, Charlie Benante, Scott Travis, Nicko McBrain, and Tom Hunting just to name few. It is Lars who makes the older fans hate the band. THE DUDE CANT PLAY DRUMS FOR SHIT!!!

But the main reason they're so huge TODAY is because of all the girls who like Enter Sandman, Fade to Black, Nothing Else Matters, and Whiskey in the Jar.

Some of the stuff I have read is just mind boggling. Metallica is not the biggest metal band, but Satyricon is? Please keep off the drugs.

Why do you let this shit slip out of your mouth?
I think you have enough brains to understand what i have to say.
I judge by my own criterion, which i desribed.

You call Load a "sell out". But, how could they sell more than the Black Album? Just a thought.

For all those who say James sounds "terrible," you're full of shit...

I'd like to see you guys play his guitar parts (Oh, I forgot... you can't!) and, sing all that shit too...

I've been singing all of my life... quartets (won state w/high school quartet).. been in bands, done weddings, sung everything from karaoke to gigs in front of hundreds... I've sung it all... arias to rock, pop, metal... whatever... I can sing pretty much anything I want.... I never got anything but 1st place in any contest I've been in but, so what? I'm sitting here on my ass and, James & the boys are rocking the world.

BUT, for my money, I'd rather listen to someone like James than someone with a too-pretty-polished, listen to my multiple octave range any day....

I can't wait for the new cd to kick ass... I'll be laughing at the Metalli-bashers as I crank it...

It's a very rare singer who sounds the same in his 40's as he did at 20's... especially when he's toured relentlessly & used his voice day in and day out to the extent James has...

I'm 35 and, I sound like always (knock on wood I keep my shit forever.. LOL) ..but, it's easy to keep my voice intact when I'm mostly singing in the shower... That's one reason I'm glad I never made it "big"... my voice would likely be shot... (that and, I'd probably be found dead....stoned, drunk...bloated from excess & with a harem or dirty women... LOL)

Guitars could still use more crunch but all in all sounding pretty good. All I listened to was Creeping Death, at least James doesn't sound like he's going through puberty on this one :)

The haters' opinion certainly matters enough to you.
You wrote a very long message trying to bash them.
Most of them are disappointed Metallica fans.
Being "suckcessful" means nothing, Madonna is more popular than Metallica and according to your reasoning she must play better music. "Suckcess" only means your music is commerciable enough and that you have a big label behind you pushing it. Nothing more nothing less, it can be good or bad and when it comes to Metallica, the album that sold the most clearly was NOT their best one.
Disappointed fans have got every right to voice their opinions just as much as anybody else. It's called "Freedom of Speech".
And being disappointed doesn't make them worse than you or anybody else.
One of the most vocal opponents of the "post-black album" Metallica was a certain Chuck Schuldiner. A man who's not with us anymore but who left an incredible legacy and when it comes to my vision of success was certainly 100% more successful than Metallica. Not to say incredibly more talented too imo.
Get a grip and stop contradicting yourself.
