METALLICA's New Album To Be Mixed By GREG FIDELMAN - May 16, 2008
METALLICA has tapped Greg Fidelman — an engineer/producer who has worked with current METALLICA producer Rick Rubin on albums for the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, SLIPKNOT and AUDIOSLAVE, among others — to mix its much-anticipated new album, due out in September.

During a May 14 interview with The Pulse of Radio, Ulrich said that the group hopes to wrap up work on the album in time for the Memorial Day weekend holiday. "It's pretty close," he said. "We've got four studio days next week to just patch up. If there's a last minute, you know, 'that needs this...' or — but pretty much done. Yeah, it's pretty much done. And then they start mixing the week after."

Lars also took part in a conference call yesterday (May 15) to promote this year's Bonnaroo festival, which METALLICA will headline on June 13, Ulrich told reporters that METALLICA recently met with a graphic designer to begin planning the new CD package, though there's no confirmed title for the album yet and the songs still have working names.

"We sort of promised ourselves that unlike all the records we made in the '90s, [which] were just completely stressed-out and just nutty, that we were gonna try and have a little more sane environment — and we've actually, surprising mostly to ourselves, been able to keep to that," Ulrich said, according to Billboard.com. "We've pretty much finished the music now, so all the next level stuff is just starting to go down."

Ulrich said METALLICA wrote 26 songs for the new CD but ended up finalizing about 14 of them with producer Rick Rubin. A total of 11 have actually been tracked for the album, though Ulrich said "length issues" might mean one more has to be eliminated.

"These are long songs ... we're talking seven-minute, eight-minute, nine-minute nutty-ass songs," Ulrich revealed. "We don't make them long or short on purpose; you just kind of do what feels natural. We're not really gonna edit them, (so) we're gonna lose another one at some point in the next month or so and probably end up with 10."

Ulrich described the material as "definitely pretty all over the place. There's a lot of variation, a lot of fast, slow, melodic ... kind of hardcore, nutty super-fast speed stuff. It's a little more like how some of the earlier records were a little more dynamic within the songs."

METALLICA played its first live show of 2008 on Wednesday night (May 14) at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, as part of a benefit for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. The school, co-founded by RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS bassist Flea, provides instruments and music lessons for low-income students. METALLICA's nearly two-hour set was heavy on speed, monster riffs and classic tunes, with the band playing only one song, "Fuel", from after 1991. Flea himself joined the group on its second-to-last encore, "Fight Fire with Fire", which frontman James Hetfield introduced as the bass player's favorite METALLICA song.

Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio how METALLICA got involved in this year's benefit. "Flea asked us actually last year, in '07, if we could partake in the festivities and the good cause, and last year it just didn't work out," he said. "We were cutting all the basic tracks for the record and it was just too nutty. But I told him, I said, 'Listen, call us back for '08 and we'll work our schedule around it.' We've known about his cause for a while, and Flea is obviously one of the most solid people, and this is also such a worthy cause."

The drummer also announced from the stage that METALLICA will begin a full-length tour in October, shortly after the new CD arrives.

The band next plays radio festivals in Arizona and California this weekend, followed by the Bonnaroo festival in mid-June, a series of European festivals, and the newly configured one-day Ozzfest this August in Dallas.

Did you think of garbage inc all by yourself? You are a moron. Those clips sound great. Your comments are so predictable...The album will be bashed by the 12 people on here that dont like Metallica. Here is what we will hear...Lars said it will be Master of Puppets and it does not sound like it, Sounds like the Loads, To fast, To slow, not produced right, they still have short hair, Kirk is balding, they have sold out, Sounds like St Anger, they are tring to hard and forcing it...on and on. We get it, you dont like them no go back to to deicide.com and let the majority here enjoy the new album without your negative and immature comments. You all are like a bunch of chicks in a click always complaining and bitching..

I've said it beofre, and I'll say it again:

Most of you will say this album sucks.

If it isn't old-school trash like their first 4 albums, you'll say they lost it after those first 4 albums, they sold out, and they totally suck now.

If they make a more (but not totally) old-scholl trash album, then you'll say they're just hopping on the "thrash revival bandwagon" that's currently "on trend", and that they lost it after those first 4 albums, they sold out, and they totally suck now.

I found some merit in all of their albums since Justice, even though the albums as a whole basically didn't do it for me.

I too am curious, if not excited to see what they've come up with.

....for the inevitible bashing as well. What I don't get is why these idiots keep clamouring for the band to make the same record over and over again. I guess they are used to that with 75% of their death metal faves, but good bands with longevity reinvent themselves constantly, and not always to the praise of the public. I liked The Black Album, Load was sub par, Re-Load was a load, but I loved St Anger. I don't know why so many people on this board hated it. Yes, the drums sounded different. At least these guys have the balls to try something different. I thought it was a really good record. And to echo something someone else said on a previous thread, the DVD rehearsal perfomance blew the actual cd away, but I still like both.

I know I'm going to get crucified for even mentioning this band on this board, but look at U2. They were a really good punk-influenced band in the beginning, run of the mill rock in the middle, then some weirdo techno band later on, and now they are back to their basic rock. No, they are not my favourite band, but they have their place. If they did Joshua over and over again like the "fans" wanted them to, they would have faded into the musical abyss. But they took risks, as do Metallica. Popo was a bust with their "hardcore" fans, but those fans came back with the latest record.

Anyway, if you don't like Metallica, then stop posting on threads with news about them. It's quite simple. I don't go to a Britney Spears website just to say how much I hate her music. Get a life people.

Personally, I don't care wether they put out a rock/hard rock/or metal album....as long as it is good. According to everyone on here, they sold out long ago so as long as it is a good album, I'll be happy. They haven't been really metal since The Black Album (yes, I dare say it was still a metal album, even though it was quite more mainstream) so I am not expecting a thrash masterpeice, just as long as the songs are good.

To all the people who are on metallicas dick let me tell you how this works since from the looks at some of your posts this is your first metallica cd release.

Step 1 the band hypes the shit out of it saying it sounds like a mix of 2 kick ass albums in their discography. lars said it best prior to the release of st garbage "st anger is a mix of kill em all and master of puppets"

Step 2 random metallica tour mates will say they heard it and oh shit THEY ARE BACK.

step 3 the album leaks and the band goes silent from all the people laughing at them.

step 4 go on a world tour ignoring the new album with the exception of whatever the radio single is at that time. (for a band who dont want to make the same old album they sure as hell like playing the same old songs.)

step 5 talk about how its someone else's or something else's fault the album blows ala bob rock or pro-tools. this one will be all rubins fault, everything he touches turns gold but its hard to turn shit in to gold especially these days with a band with no drive left.

--Step 1 the band hypes the shit out of it saying it sounds like a mix of 2 kick ass albums in their discography. lars said it best prior to the release of st garbage "st anger is a mix of kill em all and master of puppets"--

Step 1: Have interviewers ASK what the new album sounds closest to in terms of their previous catalogue, have the band say "well, if anything, it sounds closest to ______" then have people blame the band that they answered a legitimate question from the interviewer.

--Step 2 random metallica tour mates will say they heard it and oh shit THEY ARE BACK.--

Step 2: Have random tour mates, other bands, radio stations, magazines, etc listen to the album, have positive reviews (happened with St. Anger in fact before the album was released) then watch fans tear the shit out of it when it's released

--step 3 the album leaks and the band goes silent from all the people laughing at them.--

Step 3: When the album hits, have the band play a few songs from the new album until they do a "tribute" to a previous album for it's success 20 years later. Having liked the feeling of it, continue to play that in whole and pretty much ignore other albums as well, though still commenting about how St. Anger was experimental. Such were comments from them since before the release.

--step 4 go on a world tour ignoring the new album with the exception of whatever the radio single is at that time. (for a band who dont want to make the same old album they sure as hell like playing the same old songs.)--

Step 4: Play songs despite the fact the songs never really received much, if any, airtime at all. Then they go on tour, and play the "same old songs" by bringing out material they have never played (Dyers Eve) or songs they used to only do in melodies mainly (Ride the Lightning, And Justice For All...)

--step 5 talk about how its someone else's or something else's fault the album blows ala bob rock or pro-tools. this one will be all rubins fault, everything he touches turns gold but its hard to turn shit in to gold especially these days with a band with no drive left.--

Step 5: Fans put words in bands mouth although all they are doing is speaking the truth about how experimental they were. Never do they put the blame solely on Bob Rock any more than they put the blame on themselves.

Indeed - Just a thought: it suggests that the band has put themselves into a very different headspace than has been the past bunch of years - perhaps to revive old flames within?

We shall see.

Ok, as a guitar player musician whatever, I can say that its definitely metal. Definitely standard tuning as well. Theres a riff that sounds like a Danzig riff ("suicide...ive already died)) circa 1993 exactly, and then a riff that sounds like Mercyful Fate's Black Funeral but backwards. But how does all this stuff come together. It sounds a bit generic to me as well- it sounds like theyre trying, maybe too hard (like Dave Mustaine circa World Needs a Hero era Megadeth complete with a rip off song of an older band).
Plus that Danzig esque riff is almost the same riff as Dokken's Unchain the Night . Ironically, Saint Anger might turn out more original, in a twisted sort of ironic way.

I'll suspend further judgement until the album drops, or at least a song or two.

its cool, but theres so many other bands out there, including some of their peers.

I for one am interested in hearing the album. I know they are probably hyping it up as they did with St. Anger, hoping its not the case. Sure, St Anger wasn't the best and Load and Re-Load sucked balls, but at least when they release something is different from what they've previously released, and they're making SOME sort of progression (or regression depending on your opinion). No matter what the next album sounds like, people are going to be whinging that it's: not heavy enough; it's TOO heavy; Lars sucks; James is a big girl; Rob Trujuillo keeps pulling that stupid "Im so tough" face in the sleeve photographs; or that Kirk should stand up for himself.
