ACE FREHLEY Says He's Shooting For Early Summer Release For New Solo Album - May 17, 2008
Original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has told Steve Palisin of MyrtleBeachOnline.com that he's shooting for 12 tracks on his next album, his first in 18 years, with a release in early summer. Studio work has spanned more than 6 months, and some of the songs go back 12 years.

Regarding the direction of the new material, Frehley recently told Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "The stuff sounds real good, but everyone's been waiting for this record and I'm just trying to make it better. There are like two more tracks I want to cut, just to round things off."

Frehley said his biggest inspiration and his template for the new record is his 1978 debut.

"It's probably more like the first record than anything else," he said. "Most people cite that as the best Ace Frehley record and I've been listening to it and trying to figure out why. I'm trying to recapture some of that. I want this record to be extra special."

Frehley is currently on the road fronting a band that features second guitarist Derek Hawkins, drummer Scot Coogan (ex-BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION) and bassist Anthony Esposito (ex-LYNCH MOB).

While they all contribute with vocals, most of the burden is on Frehley, who historically has been shy at the mike.

"To me, singing is a necessary evil," he said. "I consider myself a guitar player and a songwriter, and because I write these songs I gotta sing them. I remember last year when I was thinking about putting the band together, some people were saying, 'Ace, you should get a powerhouse frontman.' But a lot of these songs I've been singing for years, either solo or with KISS. What's this front guy going to do when I'm singing lead? Play a tambourine," he said, cracking up.

On how he has improved as a player:

"I think I'm a little more accurate and more focused. When I drink and perform, I was maybe a little more animated, but there were more clinkers and I played sloppier and stuff. I'm just more focused now and more in charge."

On the current state of rock music:

"There are some good bands out there, but some of the screaming stuff lacks melody. I mean, if I have to choose between the two, I'll take something where I can pick out the melody — something where when you walk away from it, you can hum, something that will recirculate in your brain. Some of the best guitar solos are the slower ones. You can't really hum something when you're playing 3 million notes per second."

"I listen to a lot of the old stuff I used to listen to — HENDRIX, ZEPPELIN, THE WHO, CREAM, JEFF BECK — the stuff I grew up on. It still works today, whereas a lot of music when you play it today it really sounds really dated. A lot of the groups that influenced me, they still sound good."

Killer show and a equally killer set list. His drummer sounds just like Paul Stanley when he sings a few songs...This show got me amped up for Iron maiden next week...The concert season has got off to a good start so far...

For the people who saw Ace on this tour. Was it only here in Montreal, or the sound was just ridiculously too loud everywhere???

My head started aching after 2-3 songs, and I had earplugs!!! Everybody I talked to afterwards, said the same.

I'm KISS fan... Ace as well... caught him at the Nokia theatre in NYC recently and it was a great show. The only problem with a pending Ace solo (as we've heard for years) is it'll be "so low" no one will hear it. I hope he can sell a bit and get his tunes out there, but we all know he is definitely a niche market.

yeah, i caught him in jackson, ms, a few days ago. it was great. i wasn't expecting some of the stuff he played. i was very surprised and pleased by the show. i had forgotten that he wrote strange ways and parasite. i was so happy when he played those. great stuff!!! the sound was kind of crappy, but that's the shitty venue's fault. overall you could hear the solos and whatnot. great show. i loved it. still wondering, though, how i payed 25 to see ace when i saw the full original lineup of KISS for only 50 back in 2000. i ran through the math and... fuck it. it was worth it!

as far as the news article... isn't right now early summer. i wonder if he meant early summer 2009.

I saw Ace back in Feb. and it was a really killer show. The guy is a great guitar player. I am probably one of the few people that will actually admit I enjoy his voice and singing. He's good at what he does. Period. He WAS the soul of Kiss too. Ain't the same without him...

definately time for a new album. i like ace's take on music. i remember an interview with him years ago where he said he dug the go-go's because they sounded like a "chic" version of the byrds.
being the biased 14 year old i was at the time, i'd never even think of listening to the go-go's. but ace said they were cool so i checked them out. not great but definately not horrible. at the very least ace got me to open up my mind about other types of music.....thanks ace

Saw Ace twice, once in NYC, once in A.C. and he rocked!!! Also, got to meet him in A.C hangin out at the casino, very very cool. The band seems really cool too, they took pics with us and signed our tickets. Looking forward to a straight out "rock album", finally, from anyone in Kiss these days. Fractured Quantum should be as good as the last ones were. Album or no album, his show is definitely worth checking out.....

When i think back as a 13 year old kid, what kiss meant to me. Now i am 47 and see things different. Only in the fact that i have lived the same life as ace without the luck, fortune or fame can i say: This guy is rock n roll. Not great....not perfect....(human maybe) but to be what he's been through and to be pulling off a tour like this....adding dates, not canceling them.........at this point in his life.....as an ACE fan i'm happy. SHIT ACE is back!

Can't wait! New album is going to sell poorly because everyone downloads everything and Paul and Gene are going to try to say "See? No one likes it, and we're selling out" - Exactly, selling out. ACE has soul - Gene and Paul sold theirs long ago. But even if it DOES sell poorly, it'll still be the best thing in many, many years, especially against ANYTHING Kiss has released in the last 18 years. Fuck em. ACE rules.

Saw the show at HOB in L.A. and the sound was pretty good -- really loud, but good. Saw him again in Houston and the sound was waaay too loud. We looked over and saw this guy with earplugs before the show started and were saying, "You know you're old when..." Afterwards I wish I'd had the damn things myself! That was one week ago and I still can't hear out of my left ear so well! Had to be the venue, right? Also, Ace did not look like he was having too much fun. I caught the comment about him yawning in Jackson and it didn't surprise me. He was much fresher in L.A., more animated... more "Ace"!

The dude still rocks though! And what does he care if people take his picture? Sure it's going straight to youtube, but WTF? So what? Doesn't he want the free publicity and adoration?? I TOOK HIS FREAKIN PICTURE! Bottom line: so glad to see him out there. Hope he's back for good and can't wait for his new material!

Ace is too good for KISS. He is a true rocker. I can't wait for the new record and I hope he brings his solo tour to Australia ... come down under Ace!

His 1978 solo record is one of my all time favourites!
