It's pathetic that we haven't BILL STEER on that list. THe man did a lot for extreme music, expanding it's limits with Carcass, early Napalm Death and we can't forget the Blues band Firebird, that I think it's a good Rock band.
The guy is better that Trey or Chuck for sure.
Humans don't have memory.
Hail Bill Steer, the best guitar player and musician for extreme metal.

How Trey, Chuck and Jeff Loomis arent at least in the top 25 is beyond me. Especially Trey and Chuck. They totally redefined how extreme metal is played. But then again a lot of the people polled are crafty veterans aka old fogies. Im happy to see Ritchie Blackmore ahead of Jimmy Page for sure

I don't agree with this whole thing and I am not so sure who and how many participated - I have an idea from what I read above obviously.
I was glad to see Hetfield ranked higher than Hammet because Hetfield is the best riff writer and rhythm player. Solid like a robot! Hammet is great too with his leads.
I was also shocked to see Malmsteen ranked so high up there. He is amazing but he is only a shredder. I don't get any chills when I hear that stuff. David Gilmour and Slash give me chills when I hear those beautiful, melodic emotive leads. Oh yeah, those guys from Carcass and the guy from Coroner was pretty sick. They should be up here.

Malcolm Young deserves to be on the list. Lead player or not, he wrote some BADASS riffs. Everyone always credits Angus Young for anything, but Malcolm's the genious behind some of the most memorable guitar riffs of all time.
I would have definatly listed Billy F. Gibbons from ZZ Top. Not for the shit they are known the most for. Fuck "Sharp Dressed Man," and all of their 80s stuff. The 70's ZZ Top rules.
Glad to see Hetfield and Stevie Ray Vaughan on the list. I would have had Mustaine on it had I been asked.

You know shit about guitar history.Malmsteen invented the guitar playing basically. Before Malmsteen the electric guitar players only played very basic stuff, Malmsteen brought the guitar playing to the extreme of possibilities, just like a piano has been played for ages.

that do a fantastic job, for example Brian Tatler of Diamond Head, the 2 guys on the Blackfoot lps (Medlocke and Hargrett), Karl Groom of Threshold, and then there are the extremely talented like Frank Marino, Rory Gallagher and Michaelangelo (did I lose credibility with that one?). I would like to see specifically who some of my faves listed - for example Ayreon and Girlschool. And Buck Dharma has a great command of the guitar - I wonder who he would consider as his fave?

Your complaining is f'n pathetic - you're like a bunch of gossipy chicks arguing over McDreamy or McSteamy!
ASSHOLES - there is NO such thing as a definite best guitar player list! It's all just opinions.
For my money this is a pretty good list - no Kurt Cobain or Jack White for a change. Hendrix, Eddie and Yngwie should be 1 - 3 for the are the 3 most influential lead players while Iommi, Malcolm Young and James Hetfield are the all-time top 3 influential riff masters.
Bottom line - there are a shitload of great (metal) players that should and could've been on this list just as much as these 50, like Shawn Lane (best ever technically!), Mustaine (riff master!), Chris Poland (legato god!), Ron Jarzombek (the man practically invented technical metal), John McLaughlin, Frank Marino, Akira Takasaki, Ronni LeTekro, Matthias Eklundh, Ron Thal, John Norum, Gus G, Roy Z, Jake E Lee - the list is endless.

Compiled by musicians, nonethesless...its far better than those corporate guitar magazines usually do to sell gear. Ever notice the sneaky shit they do when THEY do those lists? LIke they have to put a CONTEMPORARY guitarist in just to sell magazines? I hate that shit. This is decent. I remember a similar list from some magazine a few years ago that had the taste to put Michael Romeo and Andre Olbrich in there. I 'd do the same!

Agree 10000000 + fold, then again you do have Schenker (I've noticed ALOT of Schenker influence on the Fate guys, down to similar lead phrases and even LICKS) on the list at least ;) But for the riffs, and yeah leads, second to none.
Bill Steer I'd put but this isn't our list is it?
Gibbons is usually on everyones list. So is Frank Zappa. I'd put Greg Ginn for being an early influence on me.
Yeah im weird.. Piggy is on there and that is celebration enough. ANYTHING dissonant or weird I play is a result of him. SAme as anything Palm muted a result of Hetfield I play.

That was one of the most pointless comments ever.
Pete Townshend is responsable for writting one of the greatest albums of all time. Any genre. Also, he was busting out heavy licks and breaking guitars/gear before any of the metal guitar players on this list. Show some respect.

non reading losers.
Read the fucking title. They poled a range of musicians and asked them who their "FAVORITE" guitarists were. It's not a list of the best, or most influential or top selling or what the fuck ever. What gives any of you fuck wit knob gobblers the right to tell a member of BOC or Celtic Frost or whatever who their favorite guiyarist should be. Learn to fuckin read, then go fuckin die.

Id also have Rocky George, Dave Mustaine, Michael Denner and Hank Sherman on there for sure.
Hmmm...Euroboy from Turbonegro, Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys (<---though not "metal" by ANY stretch of the word, still a GREAT guitarist)... and Tim Sult from Clutch too!

Watch what you say about my knowledge of guitar. I know more than you probably. I am willing to bet that I do. YNGWIE is mainly a fucking shredder! I love some of his stuff and have a lot of his albums. I can play some of his leads from when I was younger and I cared and had something to prove.
I am more into players like Gilmour and slash who give me chils down my spine and speak through their guitars instead of running up and down harmonic minor acales and various other modes. Dude, I know EXACTLY what I am talking about.
I do like Ygnwie and think he is great for that style - SHREDDING/neo classical. Randy Rhoades and Ritchie Blackmore incorporated classical elements into electric rock before Malmsteen and he is influenced by both. You are wrong. I hope you read this. I really do. I will teach you and you will hopefully appreciate it! I mean this in a kind way.

This is a good list overall. I've been thinking about it. These lists are never perfect but comparatively speaking, it's pretty damn good. It's GREAT to see Hetfield above Hammet. People just don't realize what this guy has created and how AMAZING he is of a rhythm player!

Favorite is the most subjective and the only criteria is how that particular player makes you feel.
Influential is less subjective. I would say the most influential players on today's metal are Van Halen and Malmsteen - almost all metal lead players now are a hybrid of the two - just differing in what their Van Halen:Malmsteen ration is.
Best in a subjective sense is the same as favorite. Best in an objective technical sense can be observed and that would be somebody like Malmsteen or Batio.

Has got it right! For real! I'd rather be Gilmour, Slash, Hendrix or Clapton - or even EVH, then play with the gymnastics of Yngwie! I want to feel from music and not drop my jaw from the athleticism of egomaniacs. I played like Yngwie when I had something to prove! The real challenge is spilling your guts out and making people FEEL it! THAT is real guitar art. Not guitar sport/gymnastic BS! This ain't no SPORT! It's an ART to make you FEEL on an emotional level! Yngwie is not up there for that! Just for running up and down harmonic minors and modals REALLY FAST - SO WHAT? Everyone does that now! Oh yeah, he did it first aside from Randy and Eddie.

I hate Pete Townsend because he looks like a muppet with his giant shnozza. My favourite guitarists aren't going to drag around a disproportionate Gonzo nose - therefore he is not my favourite and not on this list.

What is so special about HIS playing? Does he even play leads?
I love Machine Head but I never did for their guitar but more for their songs and , yeah, I guess the riffs, but that was Rob Flynn.
To the guy above with the asshole vile stench or whatever, if it wasn't for Hendrix then there wouldn't be lead guitar playing in rock and it would never sound anything like it does. He is the founding father and creator of the lead guitar rock 'n' roll version. He was the first. Clapton was there and Leslie West and some others but HENDRIX was the one who created what we know as lead guitar in rock music. He did a LOT more than hit the whammy bar dude. Try listening to him! He is, even today, an AMAZING guitarist!

Hmmm, what about J. Randall Casey? He's the fastest guitarist on the the planet not to forget. He plays 53 notes per second and was also fined $5,000 for freefalling without a parachute off the U.S. side of the 1,000 Islands Bridge...Casey survived the jump unhurt, but was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol as he swam ashore... Later on that same night, Casey played a sold-out show in Montreal, Canada...
Now if THAT doesn't qualify you to get on the list, I don't know what does. That's rock and roll man! ;-) And evety word is true. He is a legend. Word.

Just saw Jimmy Crespo in Las Vegas. Hasn't changed a bit since he was member of Aerosmith. He looks great and has to be one of rocks best guitarists. He performs with Phoenix. Just hear he is going to tour with Slaughter, Easton, Andes, Curly for all star rock tour. Will be awesome. see www.jimmycrespo.com or phoenixrockband.com
As Tyler himself said, Perry could never fill his boots!
