MASTODON Taps Producer BRENDAN O'BRIEN For New Album - May 22, 2008
Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON have tapped Brendan O'Brien (AC/DC, PEARL JAM, VELVET REVOLVER) to produce their next album. The band is scheduled hit the studio this week to begin recording the follow-up to the Grammy-nominated 2006 release "Blood Mountain".

In a recent interview with UK's Rock Sound magazine, MASTODON drummer Brann Dailor stated about the songwriting process for the group's new album, "It's a long, arduous process. We've got a skeleton for the whole record and these huge chunks of music four of five different segments that don't have a beginning or end yet... We're just basically in the middle of the record, adding stuff, giving it a taste then adding a little more 'pepper' or 'salt.' Once all the ingredients are in there, you have to bake it — which is just playing it over and over again until it feels right. The main goal is to get the songs right so you don't have to think about the time changes — so you can relax with it and play it how it should be played. There's a level of difficulty to our stuff and if you're too wrapped up in trying to remember how many times something goes and the timing for the next riff, you can't examine the song for being a song. So it takes a while."

MASTODON will take part in the inaugural Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival tour, which is scheduled to start July 9 in Seattle and play 30 cities. MASTODON will also team up with SLAYER, TRIVIUM and an as-yet-undisclosed opening act will team up for "The Unholy Alliance: Chapter III" European tour in the fall. So far only one date has been revealed: November 10, 2008 at Eishalle Deutweg in Winterthur, Switzerland.

A great producer who brings out the best in bands. He's produced legendary metal bands like Korn and Manson. And now Mastadon will be next!!!!

This is going to be a kick ass CD!!!

He's produced Springsteen and King's X. All across the board, he has a great ear for making a band sound great.

Interesting combination, putting him with Mastodon...

I find myself really only listening to Remission. I respect their later stuff, it just didn't hook me in.

You've got you're facts screwed up there, man. O'Brien has never produced for Korn or Manson. However, he has worked with Pearl Jam, STP and AC/DC, which still raises some questions.

For now, I'll just trust in the band and hope they have enough sense to not try and go all radio friendly. And get your head out of your ass if you think melody equals sellout.

I'm sure he'll make them sound slick and radio friendly. Probably Warner Bros' idea, since Blood Mountain didn't sell anywhere near what they'd hoped.

Before you go singing B.O.B.'s praises, go listen to VR's Libertad. Pathetic production.

Blood Mountain sold a lot more than any of their previous albums and took them from playing in front of 500 people to selling out a club near me that holds 2500

it should be interesting how brendan o'briens will swound with these guys. remission is still the one to top in my opinion. thats not to say the others suck cause they don't.

i find you have to spend some time with their albums to let them seep in.which is fine with me.

gonna see em on mayhem but, could any body help me here. are those guys and machine head gonna be on actual different stages and their times overlap or is it the same stage with different ''sponsors''?
