SMASHING PUMPKINS Planning 20th Anniversary Shows

The Pulse of Radio reports: The SMASHING PUMPKINS will commemorate their 20th anniversary with a series of special concerts, according to a post at the band's official web site. The post read, "To celebrate the band's 20th anniversary, SMASHING PUMPKINS will be playing select U.S. cities in August and September of 2008. No dates or cities have been announced but expect the band to revisit a few specific places that were missed during the last U.S. tour."
Pitchfork Media reported that the PUMPKINS will play in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, and that special guests may turn up at each show.
The group is also said to be working on a DVD filmed during their two-week residency last summer at the Fillmore Theatre in San Francisco, the second of two residencies the band did to mark their reunion.
The PUMPKINS also have plans to issue both older demo recordings and some new material later this year.
The group is suing its former label, Virgin Records, alleging that Virgin used their name and music in a promotional campaign without their permission.
Frontman Billy Corgan recently hinted that the band, who released 2007's "Zeitgeist" after a seven-year hiatus, will most likely put songs out in different configurations than the standard CD.

It's just not the same w/o D'arcy and James. Get those two back in the mix and I'll go see it. Until then it's just Smashing Corgins.

I love it when people talk shit about the smashing pumpkins saying they are not the same because they don't have James or Darcy... Yeah I want them back in the band, but its not going to happen. Darcy from what I've heard has started a family and has sort of retired from the rockstar life. And James, apparently hates Billy with an extreme passion. I read an interview stating that Billy and Jimmy tried to reach out to James but declined furiously. And now im sure the situtation is much worse since they decided to go on without him. But Zeitgeist was a great album. And a great start for the new pumpkins. Sure it wasn't there best. But its a step in the right direction. There are some great songs on there and people should give that cd a shot. Instead of just talking shit on and on because 2 members aren't in the band that really didn't do anything to begin with.

NOT GOOD MUSICIANS OR SONGWRITERS. What about them do you miss. Corgan wrote just aabout everything on every album and played just about everything on every album (except for the drums of course). So what exactly do you miss again? Oh yeah, nothing.

Ooooo, metal status!
Do you get a free Slayer t-shirt at Hot Topic if you have awesome metal status?
Or does it merely mean that you spend your evenings smoking weed and tattooing yourself?

I can't believe I'm posting about this like a pathetic fanboy, but the Pumpkins are one of my favorite bands. One thing is obvious, despite the fact that Billy and others have painted it as a dictatorship and that he basically does it all for this band, everything they've done without D'arcy and James has been pretty miserable. Zeitgeist sounds great sonically, but the songs are poor and the vocal arrangements are way over the top. Obviously the other two had something to do with at least somewhat keeping Billy in check. I'll still listen and buy everything they put out...but sooner or later I think they need to get back to all original members if they're going to put out a truly great CD again.
And yeah whatever...maybe they're not metal and shouldn't be on blabbermouth...who the fuck cares. Someday you'll be grown up and won't give a shit about things like "metal status".

not a huge pumpkin fan, but corgan really pumped up cheap trick in the early - mid 90's when no one would give them a sniff.
anyone who gets cheap trick's name out there is ok in my book, even if that person's music is boring and predictable

Apologies to the Smashing Pumpkins critics, but yes, the band have been around for 20 years and this reunion kinda makes sense. But their prime years were in their early years with "Gish" and parts of "Siamese Dream". "Melon Collie..." was their peak and even then less than half of that double album was listenable.
If anything, the Pumpkins have less than a decade of musical relevance to celebrate. I'll stick with "Operation: Mindcrime" and even "Open Up And Say...Ah!" for moments in hard rock/metal worth celebrating a 20-year milestone.
