EARL ROOT Passes Away - May 24, 2008
On Friday, May 23, metal guitarist, independent label and record store owner and metal radio DJ Earl Root passed away due to complications from Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a cancer he has been battling for over 10 years. Earl was best known as guitarist for AESMA DAEVA, GOD-AWFUL, DISTURBED (not the Chicago multi-platinum band, but the original), and much earlier with MORTICIA, among others, was the owner of Root Cellar Records and the Root of All Evil independent record label as well as the host of 35-year-running "Root of All Evil" radio show.

Earl leaves behind not only family (wife and son), but a legacy of metal, having had the pleasure of meeting him while either passing through the Twin Cities or growing up and having metal as their main source of inspiration.

Memorial services are yet to be determined. More details to come.

I remember back in my MN days going down to the Root Cellar and hanging out with Earl. Great guy, and a true metal legend who didn't get the recognition he deserved. He was a guy like Chuck S. who was totall knowledgeable and into metal. He lived, breathed and loved it.

Rock in peace brother, you will be missed.

Earl's legacy will indeed live on in so many songs, pictures, trades, sales, smiles, laughs, radio spots, etc...

What a metal, honorable, loving man.

When he signed my band to Root of All Evil records, he insisted that we always keep the rights to all our music even though he pressed thousands of our disks. He was always fair and honest and selfless.

i think it will be easy for everyone who knew Earl to remember him for the amazingly wonderful, funny, and talented metal legend that he still is!

Earl was very dear to a lot of us. It saddens me to have found this out earlier today. I just saw him a few months ago open the Therion show with Aesma Daeva in St. Paul. He seemed happy and genuinely getting better. The Minnesota Metal Scene has suffered a terrible loss today and I will be wearing my Root of All Evil shirt in his honor tomorrow. Earl was a great friend, and was always a pleasure to hang out with. Goodbye my friend, you will be missed.

Damn. Years ago he went out of his way to make sure I got my Tetstament 'The Gathering' LP securely in the mail. For whatever reason it took like a month (it was right after an Austin Records Convention), but he and his boys treated me very well.

Thanks for keepin' it real, bro.

Earl turned me on to many killer bands I still listen to today. When living in Minneapolis, I used to love spending all my money at the Root Cellar/Dungeon on Saturday afternoons. He was so knowledgable, you could tell him what was in your car stereo that day, and he could recommend 5 killer new bands to you on the spot.

An underground legend.

Earl Root was the most metal guy I ever met. I know I spent more than a few dollars down at his store over the years. Saw his band God-Awful a couple times. Killer guitar player. Amazing dude. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Earl.

I met Earl through the guys in Impaler and then visited Root Cellar before it shut down. Earl was a man that was very passionate about the music and went out of his way for the bands and fans. You will be missed my friend but your legacy shall live on!

Our lil gigs at the Whiskey stand as the most entertaining I have ever done. Really great swapping git gear stories and general rock and roll observations... Those simple memories are gonna stay with me.

Your honesty and insistence on living life to the fullest will remain a teacher for me. Rest well my friend.

First posting for me on blabbermouth. I felt i needed to pay respect to The Root Of All Evil. Trurly a great person and the Metal world has lost an icon. Ive knowen the man 20 plus years and havent meet many that were so metal and knew so much about metal and rock music. Seen his bands God Awfull and Disturbed at metalfests back in the day and was allways blowen away. The jump roping nu metal Disturbed cant hold a candle to Earl and his boys. Earl accomplished more than most people in 10 lifetimes and never got the credit due but I dont think he realy cared he was all about metal and did it for the love of the game. His Radio program is the longest running metal radio program in the world. Sundays 1 am to 6 am KFAI radio and there is a streem on the stations web page. I caught the show last night and laughed and cryed. I'll miss ya dude. R.I.P.

It would be nice, and respectful, if before posting a blurb about someone's passing, the story was fact-checked. I didn't realize Earl started doing the Root of All Evil radio show when he was 11 years old. I guess that Six-six-sixteenth Anniversary show in 2003 was a... misprint? (He also hasn't been sick for "over" 10 years... it's only been 6 or 7.)

but I did recognize the name Aesma Daeva as I picked up a used copy of the 'The new Athens ethos' at the HM store Ear Wax in Madison WI. I found out about the band looking on the BM archives concerning Visions of Atlantis (Who picked up the vocalist Mellisa Ferlaak - she sang on the Athens cds). I'll have to give this a spin today. It's not a death metal cd - more classicalish/expiremental. RIP

I have been dreading this happening since I heard about him having cancer. I have been an Earl fan/friend since 1992 when I first heard him doing the Root Of All Evil show on KFAI in Minneapolis. I used to call him all the time back in the early to mid 90's and am forever grateful for all of the great bands he got me into. I eventually got to meet Earl for the first time in 1994 and he couldn't have been a nicer guy.

Earl you will be missed by myself and MANY other fans and friends. As Earl himself would have said, "yes that's right".

R.I.P. :(

Reading all these comments from various people is just making me bawl like a little girl all over again. God he's missed immensely already. I can't even believe I'm never going to see his smiling and exuberant face anymore. It hurts an awful lot knowing we lost a titan.

Rest in peace, Earl Root.

I can't remember where I first met Earl, but I do remember him always smiling, laughing and surrounded by friends. He always had a hug for everyone and never said a bad word about anyone.

Earl was a true legend in many ways, not just professionally, but personally too. Anyone who knew him on any level was truly enriched. Earl always had time for anyone.

He was truly loved by all, and he loved everyone in return.

The only thing that gives me solace is that he's most likely searching for Dimebag, Criss Olive and Randy Rhoads trying to start an after life band.

R.I.P. Rock in Peace Earl. We love you and miss you.

Earl Root was a pillar of metal music in the Minneapolis area. It is always painful to lose someone who has so long assumed such a crucial role in his music community.

I did not know him well, but I've met him on a number of occasions. The two things that struck you about him was his personable demeanor and his overwhelming love and knowledge of metal music. All respects paid to him are well deserved.

I remember the first time I heard his radio show. I was staying at a friend and we were watching television when we turned to a cable access channel and heard the music was some pretty awesome death metal...then they played GWAR which are my favorite band and that right there solidified in my mind the Legend that is "The Root Of All Evil" ...RIP Earl you are awesome!

It is always sad when someone in the "GOOD GUY" column dies. There are NOT enough of them. Earl did more for the local metal scene THAN ANYONE ELSE and I felt he never got the appreciation he deserved - either recognition wise or monetary.
