SLIPKNOT Percussionist: 'I've Never Made A Dollar On A Record' - May 27, 2008
SLIPKNOT percussionist M. Shawn "Clown" Crahan recently told Radio Iowa that the music industry has changed so bands now make their money from concerts rather than albums.

Crahan said. "I'll just be honest. I've never made a dollar on a record. We make our money on the road."

Crahan's band plays a lot of shows in Europe where the festival scene appears to be much more vibrant. "I think America needs to look toward Europe and see what they're doing because over there they all get crazy and they need to have festivals and they just go and they take, like, weeks off and everybody — it doesn't matter if it's your boss or your mom or whatever — it's festival time," Crahan said. "I've played these festivals and they're more than just music. It's cultural. It's have a drink. Have food. Let's take a break from our job and let's really figure out life and then you come to America and it's all, like, selling buttons and this and that and, you know, it's really difficult."

SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor told Billboard.com earlier in the month that the band's new album, tentatively due out on August 12, will "rip your face off," adding, "I don't think the world will be ready for this album." The group's yet-to-be-titled fourth effort will follow up 2004's "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)", with Taylor calling it a "very dark" cross between that and its 2001 sophomore CD, "Iowa". Taylor described the new record as having "so much power in it and yet there are so many great spots for melody...It's a controlled chaos that hits you right out of the gate."

Taylor, who also fronts the more melodic STONE SOUR, said that his vocals are in a similar vein on this SLIPKNOT outing. He explained, "I got to the point where I was tired of pretending that I couldn't sing every time I made a SLIPKNOT album, so this time I'm going all out."

As for the album's lyrical direction, Taylor revealed, "Instead of bitching about what went wrong in my life, I'm bitching about what's wrong in life, period."

Taylor also said that new music is already in the works for the third STONE SOUR album, which will follow 2006's "Come What(ever) May".

New images on SLIPKNOT's official web site have hinted at a change in the masks and costumes that are a trademark of the Iowa-based nine-piece. Taylor described the new outfits as "evolved," adding that they are "very dark and will fit in everything image-wise that we're making with this album."

SLIPKNOT will co-headline this summer's Rockstar Energy Mayhem tour with DISTURBED, beginning on July 9 in Seattle.

I always assumed bands only making their money on the road was just general knowledge...

Yes, I realize bands are losing out more and more these days in terms of royalities but I don't quite fully buy Crahan's plight. To make money recording you have to sell alot of albums and SLIPKNOT are doing just that or at least their first two albums did really well.

I don't think Mr. Crahan is being entirely honest here. He's got 2 or 3 platinum albums. If he's made zero dollars from that then Slipknot got robbed blind with the deal they signed.

Most bands do get robbed blind when they sign record contracts. After the label gets their cut, don't most groups make about one or two dollars off every album sold? If that?

I despise Slipknot and all, but what he said about music festivals is damn true. America sucks when it comes to our concert choices while Europe pretty much dominates the live music scene. I've always been incredibly jealous of all the festivals they get. :/

And I bet you have a strong stance against downloading music too, huh ?

Go ask almost ANY artist about royalties and you will get the same story. If Tom Hanks makes a movie that 'fails' at the box office and he was paid 7 million dollars for that film - he ends up with 7 million dollars and MAYBE he will be offered less the next time around but it's doubtful unless he bombs and bombs and bombs. Now take the recording artist who gets an upfront signing 'bonus' of a million bucks. If his record bombs, then guess what he walks away with ?

He'll OWE BACK the million dollars AND everything possible that the record company can bill him for (publicity, faxes, recording costs, manufacturing costs, etc, etc, etc.) and it's doubtful that he will ever get another shot.

This is because the music industry is run by the MAFIA.

FACT.

I read that KK Downing says that he never one time EVER got a check from the RIAA. Not once. 30 million albums sold. Think he's a liar too ?

dhanishattuck summed it up perfectly.

I'm not a fan of either NIN or Radiohead but I think what they've been doing is just awesome. Risky as hell (especially if you're not a big name like these two), but it's a huge "Fuck you" to the RIAA and record labels in general. I really hope more bands follow suit.

He was talking about royalties for the song being played on the radio or elsewhere not the actual album sales. the slipcrap guy is full of shit.

about the festivals.

Other than Bongadude and Cockroacharella, the US don't have any festivals, let alone a cool metal one.

When you're splitting it 9 ways, you'd have to be selling millions of copies of every release to see a noticeable income from just recording. Funny how a band with 9 guys pretty much sounds the same as a band with 5 guys. lol It gets pretty redundant at some point. Trim the fat and maybe you'll make a buck, otherwise quit yer pissin n moanin.

Slipknot needs a new management if they haven't made a dime off a single album from sales. Many of these contracts have escaltor clauses in them when they sell "x" amount of albums and the band gets a bigger piece of the pie each time. Also as there contract gets played out they have other escaltors in them based on sales of the past albums. Not sure how many albums they've sold but I got to think there doing pretty damn good and damn sure are getting decent royality checks from it.

P.S.: You do play the garbage cans so how much is that really worth???? J/K I know he is talented though his Dirty Little Rabbits side show is freaking awful.

heres how royalties work.

average record deal a band gets 15-20 points (1 point = 1% so 15-20%).

Every dollar the record label spends on anything relating to the band including any advance of money is all summed together. So lets say with the advance, recording cost, promotion, manufacturing all of that adds up to the cheap sum of 1million dollars.

Now the record label doesn't get retail from the distributor so lets be generous and give the label 8 bucks for every disc sold. Heres the rub, only the bands percentage goes toward the debt, so for every dollar in only 20cents goes against the debt. So on 8 dollars the bands percentage is $1.60.

In order for the band to "break even" they need to repay the 1million debt buy selling 625,000 records. Then on record sold #625,001 they have now made $1.60, which they now need to give 25% of to their manager and another 15% to their attorney leaving them with 96cents to split up between however many members.

But at least they got a gold record for the wall. (do you think the label bills you back for the gold record they gave you?)

best part is the label made $6.40 on each record sold so they brought in 4million in before having to pay you your 96cents.
