PAUL STANLEY Is 'Not Opposed' To Idea Of KISS Carrying On With All-New Members
- June 1, 2008
|
|
Roy Hilmar Svendsen of Norway's NRK reports that KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons has confirmed what has been some fans' biggest fear for some years now — that KISS are indeed planning to keep KISS running and touring after founders Paul Stanley and Simmons decide to take off the make-up for good. During a familiar rant by Simmons about how KISS could go on forever, Svendsen asked jokingly if the band would consider looking for replacements for Simmons and Stanley in a TV show, similar to programs like "Rock Star" and "American Idol". "We have already signed the contract, and it is going to go through in a couple of months," Simmons reportedly replied. Really? "Yes, of course!" he confirmed. In a separate interview, KISS co-founder Paul Stanley was reportedly not very happy to hear about his bandmate's statement regarding KISS' future. "These things are typical," Stanley said. " Gene says something as if it was a fact, but there is no signed deal. The future has many possibilities. Will it happen next week? No! Am I opposed to the idea? Of course not." According to NRK, Stanley said that the members of VELVET REVOLVER were planning a similar stunt to find the replacement for lead singer Scott Weiland, who was fired at the end of the band's European tour earlier this year. However, in the end the band decided not to do it, according to Stanley, because of VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash's wish to remain "cool" and credible to his fans. "I don't have to be that cool," Stanley told NRK with a smile. NRK interview (May 2008):

What is original about KI$$ now? Lets see: Gene $immons has fake hair, he has a fake reality TV show, his body has had more surgery than Joan River's face, the band has had no original music since the early 80's. There are fake members on the tour who pass them self off as Ace and Peter. Who would notice the change if there were others on stage that are not Gene and Paul? By doing this they will now become the Menudo of hard rock.

At this point, if they put together an all new band and if it sounded like KISS and if they added anything new, especially new music, it would be great. If they were there just to keep playing the 74-79 stuff, theres no point. You can see KISS ARMY for $10.They do a better Kiss show than the real KISS these days, except for the fact that they cant seem to find the right starchild.Everyone else is dead on sound wise, lookwise, and with all the gimmicks.

So KISS is like a rock version of a local symphony or sports franchise? Its an interesting idea but theyd be better served with the new members performing (as in albums and tours) with Gene and/or Paul BEFORE they join the band. Then, when Paul and Gene do decide to retire, they can say they are 'current KISS members just contuining on with the band'...as opposed to, you know, entirely new members basically forming a new KISS. I could actually see Van Halen doing the same thing with Wolfgang eventually leading the band, once EVH and Alex call it a day. EVH seems to be grooming him for such a role. And hes, what, 16? In 15 years he should be very much ready to take the leadership role should they decide thats what they wanna do. And even if Wolfgang doesnt write music, EVH can always just write it and have the members play it. He can be 80 years old and paralyzed from the waist down and still write music so long as his heart and head is in it.

They can do what they want though, i dont care. I might even go see the new line up just to see how they do, but that would be it then. Im not for the idea, but im not opposed either, i just dont care what they do anymore. If this lineup put out a new album of new songs, then i would be interested. as of now, my only interest in this band is witnessing one of my old favorite bands go from greatness to nothingness. it really is fascinating how egos, money, and disconnection with the fans can make these guys so dillusional. but oh well, why do they care, either way they are rich and thats all that is important to them, always has been.

And the others
No matter what clown replaces Paul Stanley, he won't be as gifted vocally and charismatically, that's 99% sure. Money can buy a lot of things, but can't provide someone else's skills and natural talent.
Some Paul songs will never be played live anymore, that's for sure. Plus, some classic Paul trademark moves, if any, will look phony, fake and awkward.
I'm done with Kiss if they become a franchise.

Fuck that. If KISS goes out via some bogus TV show that's already been done a millions times, they can eat my ass.
The ONLY way such a thing could work is if they make this thing some kind of Vegas act where 1000 a night might pay to see the KISS spectacle, but there is no way that people will accept the band as KISS as a real band without Gene and Paul.
They better have a backup plan ready when this idea fails miserably.

i love the idea of KISS going on forever and ever. Paul is so right about what he's saying, KISS the concept and phenomenon is way bigger than any member alone.
I avoid seeing the crap these days and haven't seen any show since the reunion in 96, but KISS were and still are gods to me and had such a tremendous impact on me in the 70s that it changed my life and gave my life a purpose forever.
I hope that one day I can bring my grand children to a show and make their lives meaningful and wonderful because of the KISS phenomenon.
KISS wrote the fucking book and they still write the rules in it, many of you morons are just too damn narrowminded to grasp it.
KISS was never about the music or the musicianship... that was just part of the whole big picture, just when you shitheads understand that.
Sure, Paul is a fantastic songwriter and singer, Ace had a real cool signature style, and I truly love it, for nostalgic reasons or whatever... but if it just was for their songs I would never ever worshipped them like I do. then I could just as well have listened to DR Hook or whatever other bearded brummies.
Hail Satan! KISS is the meaning of life.

for all those arguing that other bands have continued without a majority or all of the original members, i would argue that most do so at a small fraction of their original success... at some point, it does become a veiled tribute band... it's different if players change over time because people come and go - that's a bit different because they are usually contributing their talents artistically on record...
to think that this half-baked idea that doc mcghee floated out there a couple of years would actually work is short-sighted... KISS made it big in the 70s because each band member was blown up huge into iconic figures - fans didn't buy into the characters, but they bought into the individuals themselves - the mystery and excitement was "who's" behind the facepaint, NOT, "ooh, cool - the Starchild! the Demon!... etc."
this is why people were accepting of VV's & EC's new characters to some degree, since they weren't impersonating the Space Ace and Catman... Thayer and Singer have already been catching flak for doing just that...

Sounds like they're defending the reason for having Tommy and Eric wear the Spaceman/Cat makeup......that's all. They will keep doing this until the next step......which right now, who knows what it will be. They have a credibility issue and the only way to undo it, is to either write a new hard heavy album with these guys and shove it down peoples faces or renig on the makeup decision.....I am curious as to how they will handle this, especially if they want to tour the U.S....Identity and Credibility as a band are the issues.....not musicianship, although I think still kick the crap out of most bands out there, for 35 years now!

This is a great plan! I've been a fan forever. But, with so many guest writers over so many albums, haven't they already started being replaced? It has always been said, that Kiss is larger than life, well, this is time to prove it. Think of the pressure of trying to fill those shoes! Think of the judgements that are already coming! None of this surprises me at all. If 4 new guys and a few songwriters write a new album, then it isn't KISS anymore. If they do this and play the old KISS songs then it is a KISS cover band but still not KISS so if this happens, and all members are replaced, they should change the damn name. You gotta put your foot down sometime. This is just ridiculous. It's almost bad enough with 50% of the original guys but it just do happens that are major parts of the band so it's acceptable to call them KISS, somewhat, still. However, after they are gone, then it is simply a cover band. If a new album comes out then the name KISS should STILL not be used because it isn't KISS anymore. Of course, Paul will take advantage of this so he can make a fortune every time this pre-fabricated, synthetic band does anything, from shows, to merch, to royalties etc. He would love to collect the majority of the profits for doing absolutely nothing.
I don't doubt his singing ability and all but Paul looks like he is instructing an aerobics class when he plays live and dances around like that. It looks pretty femmy to me. Gene walks around like a scary demon when their playing, "I was Made for Lovin' You" which seems to much of a contradiction. They aren't THAT heavy. I like them. they are part of my past but these discussions are starting to get redundant.
Frontmen: David Lee Roth, Mercury, Dickinson - oh, I don't know...
