Review: SCOTT WEILAND Back In STP Fold, Not Back From The Edge - June 2, 2008
Nate Chinen of The New York Times reports: Scott Weiland, the lead singer of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, had just a few words for the crowd at the PNC Bank Arts Center [in Holmdel, New Jersey] on Saturday night [May 31], and that was probably a good thing. Two weeks into this post-grunge band's reunion tour, he seemed bedraggled and bushed, like a scarecrow. His first comments were barely coherent, and what came next was dispiriting. "Sometimes you make crazy choices," he said, in a distinctly undefiant tone.

The evening was billed as 92.3 K-ROCK's Return of the Rock, with opening sets by the alternative-rock bands FILTER and ASHES DIVIDE. STONE TEMPLE PILOTS finally appeared more than an hour after FILTER, and there were boos mixed in with the cheers. Mr. Weiland noted that this was a hometown show for half of the band, the brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo, who play bass and guitar. "I apologize for ..." he started to add.

"Apology accepted, brother," Robert DeLeo said quickly, changing the subject and hustling on with the show. [See video of this portion of the concert below.] There would be time for contrition later: the tour is running through the rest of the summer, provided Mr. Weiland can hold it together that long.

When they came to Montreal with Red Hot Chili Peppers some years ago they just blew the Peppers. Looks like it's not likely to happen again anytime soon...

The band members look like they're getting ready to catch him before he falls off the stage. What a freakin' mess.

I give this reunion 1 year. Then Weiland's out of a gig. Screw him.

The DeLeo's are soooo milking this. No new material, just tour money, putting up with this waste of life.

If the Bros. DeLeo seem uninspired, I am sure it is due to extreme frustration. This could be the tour of the year, but its not going to be. I just feel sorry for the DeLeo's. They can't catch a break.

watch in the video when Robert starts talking. Weiland looks like he's completely spaced out while Robert is talking and I think the drums are hit to snap him out of it.

it's a damn shame to see anyone like that.

I don't know why people expected a "different" scott weiland coming back to STP since he left VR; basically he just carried all of that personal sh** right back to the Deleo brothers.

let me see my show in St. Louis. and then its on.

I saw Army of Anyone's club tour here and Robert kind of lost his cool and was bitching about touring away from his family in the middle of winter and all that. WAAAAAAAH!

Sure Scott looked and sounded horrible, but I think Bob has a bit of a temper that needs to be checked. Dean needs to just start hanging with The Black Keys or something.

Was 6th row side stage at the show at PNC bank. I had a perfect view of what went on between songs. Scott kept going back in front of the drum kit to sip from a solo cup and chase it with his water. After the first song, he went back to that area and stuck some crap up his nose. It looked like it was one of those allergy nose spray inhalers. I want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and think it was just allergy nose spray, but the way he was acting on stage, I highly doubt. What a diva! I think he is better off and safer with VR. I guess they got tired of his crap. The sound of the show also blew. Probably b/c Scott was all banged up and sounded like death. Im calling it now..... Before the end of this tour...Rehab, arrested, or something bad happening to him. He was such a mess. He looked like Kurt Cobain before he died.

Fuck Weiland and his "borrowed" stage persona. Always thought STP were highly overrated(when I saw them in 1996, Local H blew them off the stage and out of the arena.)

Worst grunge band ever!!!!!!!

He's ripping off Keith Richards??? I don't think I've ever seen Scott rocking a tele... I agree Scott is a moron for throwing his life away on junk, but you have no idea what you're talking about!

Up until Scott damaged his voice with junk and VR he had one of rock's best live voices and a great stage presence. As for overdubbing his voice...

Go check out STP unplugged. That's straight up live Scott.

Did you honestly think Scott's ways would cheng going into STP???

He's just a selfish fucking junkie that has crushed the hopes of any kind of STP reunion and shows no respect to the fans of STP fans by staying on the same suicide road he's been on for years.

Hey Courtney? Where did you put that shotgun?

I once thought this guy needs help, but since he's been given a few chances and wasted them all, I think anyone who would give him a hand would waste their time. There is no hope, unfortunately.

He could have been in a hell of a rock band for many years with VR and fucked the whole thing up. This reunion tour would kick some serious ass if he could stand without being supported by a mic stand. I'm 99% sure that if he didn't have his mic stand during that poor performance, he would have sung face down on the stage. "I do not know my naaaaaaame"... Imagine how embarrassing that would have been.

The guy above who said he looked like Kurt Cobain before he died is so right. That's sad, very sad.

They come to my town next month. I'll be there anyway (if Weiland is still alive then) because it's worth it, especially because it's clear it is their real farewell tour. I'm afraid I'll leave before the end of the show though.

I was at the show at the Chevy Theatre in Wallingford, CT and also at the show at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ. The show in Wallingford was WAY, WAY, WAY BETTER than the show at the PNC. Weiland was like a whole different person at the Chevy. He was sober, energetic, moving around the stage with purpose, and sounded INCREDIBLE. Check out the YOU TUBE MOVIE CLIPS from the show if you don't believe me. I feel bad for all the fans at the PNC show, because that band was not the STP that I saw a week earlier.

I was doing some research online about Scott Weiland. I guess he has bipolar disorder. People with this mental illness go through bouts of mania and depression in a cyclical fashion. I guess this explains the rollercoaster ride that the DeLeo brothers have always talked about regarding STP over the years. Part of the reason why he takes drugs may be to self-medicate. He does not take prescribed medications for his bipolar, according to what I read. Maybe if he did, he could clean up his act, and give his fans a real show.
