DISTURBED Frontman Is 'Confused' By THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN Guitarist's Comments
- June 4, 2008
|
|
DISTURBED frontman David Draiman has commented on the ongoing war of words between his band and THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN over an interview THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN guitarist Ben Weinman gave to Australia's Beat magazine in which Ben said that he was taken aback by what he witnessed at one of DISTURBED's soundchecks. "[They were] practicing where they were going to walk and when they were going to put their leg up on the monitor and pose," Weinman said. "That was weird for us. There are times [during live gigs] where I don't even know where I am." Speaking to Bob Coburn of the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" for an episode which aired this past Monday (June 2), Draiman said, "I'm actually very confused by [ Weinman's comments], 'cause, to be honest with you, we don't normally let anybody around when we're checking or we don't pay attention to it, number one. Number two is I don't ever remember playing with the guys, to be honest with you. I don't know what they were doing there. I don't ever remember having them open for us, so… I don't even know what the hell they're talking about. And then as far as 'rehearsing moves,' I mean, I don't know who the hell they think we are — we're not N'SYNC; we're not going up there with choreography or something like that, trying to rehearse. 'This is when I put my foot on the monitor here.' [Laughs] No one cares about that. But when it's time for Danny [ Donegan, DISTURBED guitarist] to hit his guitar solo, yeah, he needs to be in a particular cued spot so that the lights go to that focus point, when there's a little particular fill in the song. It's called production — it's what any big professional band that isn't just punk rock… Not to say that there is anything wrong with punk rock, because I have my roots in it, but you can't compare the two styles of a show. THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN are more punk and I respect them for what they do — I'm not even calling them out on any level, in any way shape or form. I like the style of what they do. I don't understand what the hell they think they saw with us, but gentlemen, let me give you a little bit of education: This is what the big boys do who play stadium shows — they wanna worry about how the lights look that they spend so much money on." Draiman's June 2, 2008 appearance on "Rockline" is now available for streaming at this location.

I find myself laughing at Dillinger Escape Plan and facepalming over Disturbed. All Dillinger Escape Plan did initially was mention how odd it was to see Disturbed's sound-check in comparison with their live show, the two of which are radically different. If any band blew this out of proportion, it's Disturbed. Immediately going to the "YEAH SO X IS WHY I DO THIS," and then relating themselves to KISS and Metallica (like that of all things is something to flaunt off). I'm sorry, but if Disturbed think that somehow they're going to be some hugely influential band, they're extremely deluded. There's nothing inspiring about their music unless you're a sixteen year-old angry high school student.
Not to mention, I find some of Disturbed's comments absolutely ridiculous in context. Ben Weinman has been approached to teach classes at Berklee. DEP have consistently put out technically challenging albums one after another that inspire all kinds of violence at live shows. Seeing anyone from Disturbed talking about how Dillinger Escape Plan should "learn what it's like when you play with the big boys" is absolutely ridiculous. Music is heading in the direction of one of these bands, and it's sure as fuck not Disturbed.

Weinman was clearly having a cheap shot by implying that Disturbed are a contrived corporate rock act, whereas Weinman thinks he is some kind of jazz shaman, and such a pure artist that he goes into a trance on stage.
Well whatever, but if you're going to take cheap shots, they will come right back at you.

I'll be the first to admit that Draiman has his moments of unadulterated douchebagness, but the pure fact of the matter is that Weinman came out of the gate with some critical comments and has now lost some respect for his entire band.
Advice for small-timers... If you are a relatively unknown or niche band, don't go taking swings at the guys that are selling MILLIONS of albums. Even if your hardcore fans agree with what you say, to all the people who have never heard of you, it makes you look cheap and petty... Even more so than practicing your poses during soundcheck.
The new Disturbed CD is really good as well. Best production to date and songs on par with 10,000 Fists.

Draiman actually sounds all respectable, taking the high road like, until the very last sentence, when he feels the need to point out the fact that Di$turbed makes so much money. Hey man, I know you're enjoying a luxourous lifestyle, but be humble about it. If I'm ever a "big boy" playing stadiums, I'd be humble like a monk.

Music? DEP are mediocre at best, with most of thier songs consisting of sloppy guitar work, poor song arrangements and shitty vocals - if you can even call them that.
I enjoy heavy music as much as the next guy on Blabbermouth, but as someone here called them yesterday, they are the essence of "scenecore" music - here today, gone tomorrow.
For the record, Disturbed sucks too.

I once saw DEP opening for Slipknot and this is how it went down:
After their first song, NOBODY clapped. It was dead quiet and the band members were looking at each other like, "WTF do we do now?"
So they started playing the next song and the guitarist's huge pedal board had some kind of malfunction so his amp was just making this ungodly loud high-pitched squeal.
At least 3 guitar techs came up on stage and started messing with his equipment and couldn't get it to stop. They ended up just turning his amp off and he ran around on stage the rest of the show with his guitar still on but not playing it.
He was just waving his hands in the air and jumping around like an idiot for the other 6 songs.
At the end of the set they got booed.
I'm not making this shit up. It happened in like 2004 or 2005 in Indianapolis.

Disturbed 2 - Dillinger 0.
It's like their guitarist, Donegan, said. When you have pyro in your stage set you HAVE TO know where to stand or you'll end up like James Hetfield. Dillinger will never have a stage show so they don't have to worry. They can just run around like idiots the whole time. Besides, when they play people are still getting drinks and getting ready to see whoever Dillinger is opening for.

Ben didn't go for a cheap shot; he merely made an observation. And the barking master from Disturbed was somewhat respectable in his rebuttal. However, he does lack in his musical integrity refering to Dillinger as "nothing more than just punk rock." Come on guy, just cause you don't get it, doesn't mean it's classified as punk rock.
I think Dillinger fucking up during a show and running around like children w/ their asses on fire while trying (and usually succeding) to play their intricate and complex arrangements is far more entertaining than watching Disturbed in a stadium getting people to pump their fists in tune w/ "10,000 fists." Too each his own...

The only thing that bothers me about it is that it is probably the only intelligent thing Draiman has ever said that I have read.
You, Specter5, are a douchebag, however.
I am 37 ... and the only thing that makes me is OLD. I prefer a lot of the older stuff, but I listen to the newer stuff as well (like you) ... but it still only makes me old whether or not I was there to see the 80's or not.

Saying that Dillinger are "mediocre at best" is a critically void statement that just oozes elitism. DEP have inspired hundreds more bands to pick up guitars and start butchering conventional rhythmic devices and song structures. If you think that this band's guitar work is sloppy, then it's clearly evident you've actually never heard the group. The music on their new album is absurdly technical at points.
Seriously, it's bad when a mathcore band can write a heavier album than Cryptopsy. So sincerely, fuck off until you've actually given the band a listen.

Gotta laugh at DEP for this one. Draiman didn't sound like a pubescent girl in this interview. Kudos to him! DEP can suck it. Oh, Draiman...you look like a dick with ears.

I'm curious, from the interview this Draiman guy sounds like Disturbed is a big thing...is any of this true? i'm not talking about personal taste (a kid who i teach guitar to made me listen to Disturbed and i found them quite generical and boring, but it's not the point), i'm talking about popularity, records sales: are they really that big in the states?

Yes, franz, Disturbed ARE that big, and there IS a reason for that; they're GOOD. No matter what these morons on here like to spout, they actually have talent, and if anyone on here would actually go LISTEN to the new CD, Dan shows off his ability to play guitar on several songs. I'm not saying Disturbed are as talented as some other bands whose metal is "solo and riff-based", but they know how to write good music, and they have a formula that works, for the majority of fans out there, that is. And many on here are very much a minority. I'm not trying to defend Disturbed, but try and recognize talent when you see it.

but at least at times I can call what Disturbed make music, even if it is really bad music.
As far as DEP goes, I don't even know what the hell is going, its like they are trying to play 3-4 songs at once and it all ends up sounded disjointed.

Both bands put on decent live shows, even if Draiman can't spit fire. lol.
But seriously, I don't see the point of this little tiff. Disturbed are definitely a bigger band than DEP, no question.
Bigger shows =Bigger Spectacle= Bigger production. This is what the American audience demands, if not every audience throughout the world. Rehearsal is warranted in order to put on a good show, IMHO.
I mean, if DEP was ragging on some obscure band for rehearsing their "stage show" in a club, I could see where criticism might be warranted.
It's just the nature of the beast, dude. Let it go.

This entire press battle is ridiculous considering these two bands should never even be mentioned in the same sentance, let alone play a show together. All in all, I could give a fuck how much time you spend working on your cues at a live show, I'm concerned with whether or not your music is good, and whether or not you entertain me.
Disturbed is a band that has propegated frat metal and taken it to the next level. If I was in Disturbed, I'd likely think I was the shit too, even if I was aware of how lame my band was.
Dillinger on the other hand is a band of MUSICIANS who write music for MUSICIANS. People dilluted enough to enjoy the music Disturbed cranks out on a yearly basis are clearly not understanding what Dillinger is offering. I would be floored if any member of Disturbed was capable of anything like DEP is doing, and even more floored if any of them possessed the musical knowledge to even understand what DEP is doing.
So sure, Disturbed may have money to buy and sell DEP 10 times over. But no matter how rich they get, they'll never be able to buy what Dillinger has...talent and an intelligent fan base. OOOO AH AH AH AH.

I read in an article that Dillinger Escape Plan were on a bill a few years back with Puddle Of Mudd and some other bands, and because the people there simply didn't understand their music, the frontman received himself on a towel onstage, and throw it into the audience. Sorry, but what do you expect when you play a show with people that expected to see radio bands?

The ignorance and just blatant stupidity on this site is truly staggering. It can all be summed up with this: nobody here listens to anything before bashing it. None of the people here have listened to Disturbed. They're just a bunch of morons who generalize lyrics based upon one song, exaggerate, and fabricate things. When you people know what you're talking about then go ahead and talk.

very mature response from Drainman... and i love this line right in the end:
I don't understand what the hell they think they saw with us, but gentlemen, let me give you a little bit of education: This is what the big boys do who play stadium shows — they wanna worry about how the lights look that they spend so much money on."

I saw Disturbed at an Ozzfest, and I have been disturbed every since. This band sucks so hard. The lead singer was up on stage doing the running man for god sakes. This band is all about pose and cock-rockery that they are really a joke. I don't doubt what was said. At one point in the show the crowd had been out in 95F heat all day, and we finally got to go to our covered seats. The 2nd band on was distrurbed, and everyone was sitting down. Of course that cock of a lead vocalist goes.. "You all sitting down is a diss to black sabbath.." What the fuck is this guy even talking about? Black Sabbath are gods, your band is full of fucks that like to figure out where to put there cock rock poses during soundchecks.
I can't wait for this band to go the way of wang chung and bannarama.
