MESHUGGAH's TOMAS HAAKE Is Metal's Top Drummer - June 5, 2008
MESHUGGAH's Tomas Haake has been named the #1 drummer in the "Metal" category in Modern Drummer magazine's 2008 Readers' Poll. The Readers' Poll results appear in the July 2008 issue of the magazine, available on newsstands now.

2008 Modern Drummer magazine readers' poll results in the "Metal" category:

01. Tomas Haake (MESHUGGAH)
02. Jason Bittner (SHADOWS FALL)
03. Chris Adler (LAMB OF GOD)
04. Derek Roddy (ex-HATE ETERNAL)
05. Joey Jordison (SLIPKNOT)

Randy of SickDrummer.com conducted an interview with Tomas Haake of MESHUGGAH on April 12, 2008 in Denver, Colorado. Watch the two-part chat below.

MESHUGGAH recently finished the U.S. leg of MINISTRY's final world tour — C U LaTouR — which kicked off March 25 in Spokane, Washington and concluded on May 11 in Chicago, Illinois. The trek also featured opening act HEMLOCK.

MESHUGGAH's latest album, "obZen", sold 11,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 59 on The Billboard 200 chart. This is substantially more than the 7,000 first-week total achieved by its predecessor, "Catch 33", which landed at No. 170 on The Billboard 200 chart back in June 2005.

An e-card for "obZen" can be accessed at this location.

I agree with Haake and Derek Roddy, but I always think that George Kollias (Nile) and Inferno (Behemoth) get overlooked. Chris Adler is good, but I don't know if he is top five.

Look, don't get me wrong, I love Bittner and Adler. I think they are both good drummers and very creative. But as Silent Water mentioned, why aren't guys like George Kollias, Inferno, Brann Dailor, KC Howard, John Longstreth, and Tim Yeung getting any credit? To each his own I guess. I have no disputes with Haake and Roddy. They are both insane drummers!

God, don't even get me started on Joey Jordison. Why are so many people sucking this guy's dick? He's good, but that's it. Good. Not great. I don't think he is even comparable to the other drummers in that list.

Inferno owns all of these drummer, Daniel Erlandsson from Arch Enemy kills most of these aswell, as for Adler and Bittner, Andols Herrick from Chimaira own both of them in that genre for creativity, the guy is a genius

The people who say Joey is overrated aren't drummers. Joey is a fuckin' beast and incredibly creative for the type of music Slipknot plays. I definitely think Haake deserves the props, but where is Bobby Jarzombek? I think everyone on the list is deserving, especially Adler, for being one of the most consistent drummers out there in terms of performance and taking metal drumming to a new tier (perhaps not faster, but different and creative). People who think they are drummers because they've been playing for 2 years, flame on.

Why is it that everyone is spouting extreme drummers all the time...granted, I understand it's a METAL readers poll, but shit...you can trade out names like Yeung, Roddy, Kollias, Drailor, Inferno, etc all day...and in reality, the only thing that sets them apart is SOUND and TEXTURE coming from the production. Blasts are blasts, extended fills are extended fills...not to mention they all play within 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and on occasion you'll find something more intricate...I.E., Haake or Carey, and still within a 4 groove. These other extreme guys are good...great...choose whatever word, but anyone here who drums can play this KVLT material and at the end of the day...they are all interchangeable. Drummers like Tim Alexander for instance, not interchangeable and hardly ever in these polls...10 times more creative than anyone mentioned in this thread thus far.

No doubt this is sales/popularity driven. I've had enough blasts in my day...boring to play and once you've got the skills...really boring. Now, toss some new Alexander material in and you'll find yourself studying for quite some time.

rat-a-tat-tat

cheers...

Can any of you morons tell me how this list affects your life in any way? Won't you be ably to sleep at night now knowing someone you like isn't in the list? But then again if a drummer you liked was in the list you would probably complain that they were sellouts now because someone else recognized their exisitence.

Do you really think Inferno is all about blasts and that's it? If so, you haven't heard the dude at all. His shit is so creative and epic sounding. His playing almost sounds like machine guns firing.

Definitely, one of the best drummers I've ever heard.

they all play the same style and all have either that dead or triggered sound. just saw robbreiner of anvil play a little 4pc shit kicked and what he played was just stunning. drummers today are to worried about throwing whatever they just learned into a song rather than something interesting to fit the song.
all of these guys are interchangable

First let me say I think Haake is a solid drummer but unlike the knob gobblin fanbois who think he walks on water I think he is interesting at best.

Is it just me or does Math Metal get old after a minute of listening.

Good thing is I dont have to listen to it and their are other bands that incorporate this style and exercise restraint that I WILL listen to instead.

Bottomline:
All of these guys on the list (minus only a couple) at the end of the day deserve respect because they are talented motherfuckers and getting paid to do it.

Most importantly, they are fuckin better than you.

You might think that's funny, but Steve Smith is one of the best all around drummers who is up there with Neil Peart, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Calaiuta and others...

Definately a different style the Tomas Haake, but in all seriousness... yeah, Steve Smith is a better drummer and any serious drummer would tell you that.

Since Adler, Bittner and Jordison are on this list, it's clear that popularity is far more crucial than drumming ability. There's plenty who completely smoke these birds.
