DEF LEPPARD Frontman Slams MÖTLEY CRÜE, POISON; Says Most L.A. 'Glam' Bands Had No Substance - June 7, 2008
During yesterday's (Friday, June 6) press conference at the Sweden Rock Festival in Sölvesborg, Sweden, DEF LEPPARD singer Joe Elliott was asked how his band managed to avoid getting caught up in the whole "glam-rock" scene of the '80s even after citing such image-oriented artists as MICK RONSON, DAVID BOWIE and T.REX as major influences.

"If you actually look at the way that the 'glam' bands, if you want to call it that, from Los Angeles dressed themselves up, they totally missed the point," Elliott replied. "When English glam bands from the '70s came on 'Top of the Pops' [long-running British music chart television program], it was almost an afterthought to what they were actually doing — music always came first, and then they'd be like, 'What are we gonna wear?' . . . Bowie was very image-driven, and maybe the music came second, but a lot of the other bands, it was always about the music — the image thing was just something that they did to just upstage other bands on 'Top of the Pops'; that's what they used to do. So we were never driven to do the mascara thing or whatever these bands did. They didn't have any substance musically, I don't think, in comparison to us, so we didn't feel we needed to do it. Bands that do that are doing it to cover up the fact that there is no substance in their music. The only band — and I'm not saying it because we're here — the only band that did pull it off was [Finland's] HANOI ROCKS. I thought HANOI ROCKS were a good band, and they looked… Michael Monroe [HANOI frontman] was one of the best… I would have shagged him. [Laughs] I like Michael, I think he's sexy, and I'm not gay. And I think Andy McCoy [HANOI guitarist] does the best kind of Keith Richards... so much better than MÖTLEY CRÜE or POISON or any of those bands. They [HANOI ROCKS] were real — the rest of the guys, it was all a bit fake for me."

At least they had kick ass hairstyles for the time, not that horrible mullet you had.

So you say "the image thing was just something that they did to just upstage other bands on 'Top of the Pops'; that's what they used to do."

Well as far as L.A. bands from the 80's. the image was just to upstage other bands on the Sunset strip, you idiot. And I guess the only reason you don't bash Hanoi rocks, is because they're not American, my guess. Not that I actually say anything bad about them, because I love this band.

Very

Obvious

Nikki Sixx rocks and knows how it's done.

Def Lep writes almost country and aunt (mama) rock ballads

Def Lep: 0
Motley Crue: 1

Bret from Poison had a reality TV show, BUT he dates chicks
Def Lep don't, they're gay.

Def Lep: 1
Motley Crue: 1
Poison: 1

Yes, and even though both Motley and Poison have had their up and downs, I've never seen them go to the lengths of being a hair metal boy band that Def Leppard has in the past few years. Add the douchebag Vivian Campbell and his diss of metal every interview, and you have a band in denial. I like Phil Collen though but am sure he just likes the paycheck. This band sucks ASS however cheesy Poison and Motley have been (and they have been cheesy and sucky believe me, but not to the point of Leppard)...what a bunch of dorks. I didnt like Poison during their heyday but crank up their classics far more than even anything off Hysteria..at least Poison kept a raunchy rawness in their music that Leppard had lost to the big machine. Same with Crue. Girls Girls Girls had horrible songwriting, but at least it was sleazy fun. Some of Leppards ballads make Celine Dion seem not corny.

Although Joe's not exactly "slamming" Motley and Poison ("It was all a bit fake" is hardly Phil Anselmo saying shit about Dimebag is it?), he still should keep quiet and thank god people are prepared to pay money for an album called Songs From The Sparkle Lounge

Personally I always thought Motley were the most entertaining rock act of their era, and will carry on thinking that until they go the way of modern-day Kiss

But Leppard had their moments too. The Slang album (you know, the one no-one bought) is fantastic, and at least half of Hysteria is more fun than, say, And Justice For All

The real problem is that Joe opens his mouth before engaging his brain. Suggesting that Bowie is more image than music implies he stopped listening to him after 1973 and has missed over 30 years of amazing albums

[yo Moses, good to see you on here dude - I'm not posting on Kiss anymore, although I'll admit to reading that Condoleeza shit...]

So many metalheads are so obsessed with calling hair metal "glam rock," without realizing that there was already a genre by that name that was very different and infinitely better than Poison or whoever. I mean Bowie, Mott, Roxy Music, T Rex? That's genuinely good rock n' roll.
As far as the amount of "substance" Def Lep had compared to the LA bands, that's debatable - I mean the first two Lep records are quite decent but then again, so are the first two Crue records.

Mott, T-Rex, Bowie...hell, even Slade and The Sweet. That's some kick ass rock, the original glam. And almost none of these guys were gay (not that I care) it was just a style. At least Lep admitted the influence on Rocket--not that that was such a great song.

But still, Elliot's kind of talking out of his ass here. Sure, they wore less makeup than Poison, Crue or any number of bands of the era, but come on..."Pour Some Sugar On Me"? "Let's Get Rocked"? Leppard was a good pop-rock band for a while. They went south in a MAJOR way in the late eighties. And even their good albums were chock full of filler. I've always thought that Shania Twain should cover "Sugar" since the song is entirely in line with her sensibilities. She'd have to change it to "I've got the peaches, you've got the cream" though.

Def Lep is a bandwagon band. NWOBH was big when they started, then the hopped the glam bandwagon and sang about "pouring sugah", then tried to cut their hair and pretend to be alt boys with Slang. Now they're focusing on their target audience which is obese women who still tease their bangs. They should have called Songs From the Sparkle Lounge "Endless Breakfast Buffet" instead.

Def Lep do what they do well but can't be calling out others for "substance" when their career is based on a target marketing plan.

I don't think of Def Leppard! There wasn't a lot of depth in LA Hari Metal either, but I would listen to most of those bands before I would listen to DL. High and Dry was OK, but from Pyromania on, I couldn't stand them.

Now for another bit of substance:

"Armageddon It"

Ya better come inside when you're ready to
But no chance if ya don't wanna dance
You like four letter words when you're ready to
But then you won't 'cos you know that you can

You got it, but are you gettin' it?

You say that love is won when you get some
But then your finger won't trigger the gun

You know you (ya) can't stop it
so don't rock it
You know you got it

Hey, but are you gettin' it?
really gettin' it?
Come get it from me

Gimme all of you lovin' - ev'ry little bit
Gimme all that you got - ev'ry bit of it
Ev'ry bit of your lovin - oh, c'mon live a bit
Never want it to stop

Yeah, but are you gettin' it? - Armageddon it!
Ooh, really gettin' it? - Yes, Armaggedon it!

You try comin' on when you need some...
But then you don't 'cos you already did
Yeah, you jangle your jewels while your shakin' ya...
And drive the pretty boys outta their heads

You got it, but are you gettin' it?

You flash your bedroom eyes like a jumpin' jack...
Then play it pretty with a pat on the back

You know you (ya) can't stop it
So don't rock it
You know you got it
Hey, but are you gettin' it?
Ooh, really gettin' it?
Come get it from me

[Repeat Bridge]

[Repeat Chorus]

C'mon, Steve, get it

[guitar solo]
Take it, take it, take it from me
I got an itchy finger following me
Pull it, pull it, c'mon trigger the gun
'Cos the best is (a) yet to come, I say
'Cos the best is yet to come

Are you gettin' it? Really gettin' it?
Yes, are you gettin' it, really gettin' it?
Oh, come get it from me

Gimme all of you lovin' - ev'ry little bit
Gimme all that you got - ev'ry bit of it
Ev'ry bit of your lovin' - Oh come on live a bit
Never want it to stop - Oh, are you getting it?
Gimme all of your lovin' - Ooh really gettin' it?
Gimme all that you got - Oh are you getting it?
Gimme all of your lovin' - Oh live a bit
Gimme all that you got - Whoa, live a bit

You've got to live it - gimme all of your lovin'
Ooh baby live it - gimme all that you got
C'mon and give it - ev'ry bit of your lovin'
Oh come on and give it - Never want it to stop
Oh are you gettin' it? - Gimme all of your lovin'
Ooh really gettin' it? - Gimme all that you got
Oh are you gettin' it? - Ev'ry bit of your lovin'
Oh live a bit - Never want it to stop

One of the worst songs ever.

With Hysteria, Def Leppard were part and parcel of the hair band scene. They didn't have the extreme makeup and pink spandex but musically they were going for the exact same demographic as Poison and the rest. Bon Jovi was heavier than DL and would anybody here deny Bon Jovi was a hair band? Hair bands were all about selling to the women - and where there were women the dudes would not be far behind. Def Leppard today is a Matchbox 20 clone.

When it was hip, they followed that trend, but in a Europe or Bon Jovi way. At least, Bon Jovi's songs (before 1994) are not overproduced and still listenable today. Their power ballads are among the best of all time. On the other hand Love Bites sounds so artificial, and so does Pour Some Sugar on Me. Listening to these songs today is almost embarrassing.

Guns N Roses can be compared to Motley Crue. Let's compare apples with apples.

Comparing Def Leppard to Motley Crue is like comparing Metallica to Cannibal Corpse.

At least they got the girls, unlike Joe Elliot who just proved that he's gay.

First of all let me say that I'm a big fan of both Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe and Poison. And I don't see any reason why they have to slam each other now all of the sudden?

Therefore I'd like to call Elliot rather immature to distance himself from the 80's Rock praising that of the 70's just because people have been praising that again in the last 10 years or so.

To me there's no competition. I like a few 70's tunes but they could never compare to the 80's in general which BOTH music-wise and image-wise ruled the world.

When it comes to image, I find most 70's looks uninspired, freaky and gay looking which suits them well because back then lots of those band were openly bisexual. Catsuits or leather? I'd take leather any day. Neat or sloppy? Neat right on. To me it looks appalling as opposite to the great 80's looks where they dressed good and tried to look their very best to get as much women as possible in which they instantly succeeded. So what's wrong with looking good?

Sure Motley and Poison wore a lot of make-up at the beginning of their careers but that was all cool stage performance. It was simply entertainment at that particular point to paint yourself up a little and put on a good show. They didn't look gay, they looked cool.

Soon after both bands ditched that whole image though. They started to just look good like most bands in the Metal genre. They looked like normal people looking sharp appealing to the popular audience just like most similar bands from the strip and wherever. Keep in mind that a lot of these bands didn't wear make up in the first place, they've always looked good and cool. That's something that lacked in the 70's.

Now on to the music. The music only got better if you ask me. We went from old Rock tunes to Heavy Metal rules. It hit harder and better than anything around before. From catchy straight in your face Hard Rock to classic balladry. What's not to love??

Bret and Rikki can keep there mouths shut because poison has never been awarded one diamond award and def leppard has two (thats for sales over 10,000,000 copies for an album for those who dont know what it is) Poisons total album sales world wide are like 20,000,000 thats 20 years and 5 or 6 albums Def Leppard have over 65 million albums sold! and every album since 1983 has whent top 20 and two number 1 albums i dont think poison has even came close to that. Bret is just upset he needed a reality show for people to know who he is. Def Leppard is the better band hands down, C.C. couldnt hold Phils guitar ha! and rick allen with one arm could drum circles around rikki rocket any day. And lets not start on motley come on vince doesnt sing anymore he says bits of the verses with that fuckn alvin and the chipmunks voice of his and it makes you wanna stab yourself in the eardrum. Bret cant say anything about anyone his new album consists of songs from his previous albums because no one bought them so all the giggly airheads that go to see him cause hes on vh1 wont know any better. and at least joes hair is real!

I happen to enjoy metal in all its forms... from the "glam/hair" metal we speak of here, to progressive, power, and and all other forms of metal inbetween. Thought I'd throw in a few comments. I have been a hard rock fan (that is my preferred term) for a long time - though I do like a range of music to go along with that. All comments about who likes who better is everyone's individual opinion. Joe elliott was asked by the reporter what he thought of the la glam bands remember. To put into perspective - take a look at the cover of look what the cat dragged in - poison's 1st album from 1986 - and tell me what you see - be honest.
I like some poison songs, in fact quite a few, and motley crue are one of my favourite bands - I have owned the crue albums from shout up to feelgood over the years and shout and girls are two of my favourite albums. Tommy has been my favourite drummer and I think he is good musically as is rick allen - you can't diss a guy who can lose a limb and still drum and sound better than some two armed drummers. comments about him not playing drums on leppard albums are complete lies - and since the mid 90s he is playing a regular drum kit too.

Leppard also use their real names. I loved reading about sixx (real name frank ferrano -I think) in the music mags but the point is the names are fake -that is part of the point of what elliott said. His comments were saying def leppard werent' about that. Was motley crue even mentioned in the interview by the way?, even if I love a bunch of crue songs, and even poison, no one touches leppard for songwriting. Sorry folks- yes I know you can quote pour some sugar on me or lets get rocked - so what? they don't claim the song is a blowing in the wind lyric - but they don't appear on album covers looking like girls - or do their own reality tv show - come on, that’s attention seeking and doesn’t spell out credibility and substance to me.
Speaking of production - you know the slick over produced crap some of you claim def leppard had done with mutt lange - some of their albums took a long time to produce (yet again - so what? and hysteria and pyromania have an excellent sound regardless of if you don't like def leppard) but anyone who owns poison's swallow this live from 1991 only has to listen to it to know some bullshit is going on there. Def lep may have spent a long time recording some of their albums but at least they are playing their instruments and don’t pretend anything is fake. Listen to swallow this live and there is crowd noise throughout the album - there is no concert I have been to where people cheer and scream for two hours without stopping. The recording has been doctored up boys.
Vince neil has a pretty weak voice so how do you think it sounds so forceful on the albums - because it has been played around with in production to boost the sound. So the crue and poison doctor up recordings to hide weaknesses. Does that make them production bunnies? Back on image and poison - I still have circus magazines from the early 90s where bret michaels is talking about cc leaving the band and quote - when you go on the mtv music awards with puffed up purple hair looking like bozo the clown people aren't going to take you seriously - end quote. That says quite a bit don't you think. That s when cc left to form the cc deville experience (as in the jimi hendrix experience). Yeah right cc, you are as good as hendrix.
Def Leppard had their commerical and creative highpoints as every band does and then its up to each band to continue on if they love doing it and see if they are real and are stayers. The fact that all three of these bands are going speaks of some substance to do that.
Motley crue are heavier then leppard, that’s a fact, on some albums. That doesn't equate to who is a better quality band. Though if I think about theatre of pain it doesn't actually rock that hard. All you headbangers pumping your fists to a cover version of smokin n the boys room - its not hard rock, and a bunch of songs on feelgood – she goes down, sticky sweet – mindblowing rock there. Does ‘don’t go away mad’ rock you as hard as shout at the devil? I think not. and nikki sixx said in the dirt biography - between shout and feelgood he wrote two good songs (my guess is wildside and girls girls girls). Not to make stuff up - read it for yourself.
As for glam metal - leppard ended up being part of 'hair metal' for sure. That’s what people called it in retrospect. Still prefer the hard rock term. But if you remember leppard became massive in the usa in 1983 with pyromania - after starting in england in 1977. they didn’t form part of any genre because there wasn’t one going. They probably started a genre and probably true they define a genre. Better to be a leader than a follower though. Van halen was about the only successful band going. so to say lep are part of a glam metal scene is ridiculous, and they simply cant be part of the LA glam metal scene. Like I said they are still part of the hair metal movement as they had long hair. I'd still prefer long hair (which really doesn't look like a mullet) than peroxide green and purple hair. Van halen are from Pasadena – near la, but they started in 78 so they don’t form part of the la glam metal scene but would be considered part of hair metal as they had long hair, of all things! Bon jovi, were part of hair metal too for a while – but are from new jersey so aren’t part of la glam metal.
There is a classic album episode for hysteria for a reason, which sorry to say crue and poison won't ever have.. and leppard had a vh1 episode on pyromania. That’s two albums there treated as classics. Both of which sold more than 10 million in america - that’s a lot of albums bought by americans. That’s a fact. And leppard has outsold poison and crue put together - fact. No that doesn't mean they have sold out - just because you sell a lot of records doesn’t mean you sell out. Any claims about over production are a poor attempt to say hysteria didn't cut it as a rock album. If you had listened to the whole album you would know. It may have won a few production awards too - but so what - you're probably pissed that poison or crue albums didn't win the awards.
Lets me be emotional now - def leppard wipe the floor with any artist, (probably because they always have been and always will be my favourite artist). They have lasted 30 years putting out albums regularly and are a real band. I still like the crue and poison, but leppard are in a different class to them. That doesn't mean you have to like them if you don't or you think the crue are better. But that’s my opinion.
However if anyone else from a different genre was putting crap on the crue and poison I’d defend them to the hilt – but when it comes to leppard – there is no one else.

Joe Elliott can say what he wants when he wants, he's earned that. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and in my opinion what he said is true. I never took Poison seriously, anyone who wears more make up than I do, pouts their lips in every picture taken and stars in a reality TV show with tramps who look like they all have some form of an STD is kind of hard to take seriously. I mean, "Will you stay and rock my world?" I wasted 30 minutes of my life once that I will never get back watching that Rock of Love Garbage. By the way Brett do you EVER take that ridiculous bandanna off your head or are you really going bald or something? Joe may have sported a mullet, but he was gorgeous doing so. Def Leppard writes great music and I think they are one of the best bands that came out of the late 70's and eighties and they continue to come out with great music. They have aged well and grown up and I can take my son to see them and not have to worry about the crap that I would at a Poison or Motley Crue concert. Joe Elliott and Def Leppard are so far and above these guys, that is why Def Leppard is performing with Taylor Swift on Cross Roads and Brett Michaels is probably in contract negotiations for Rock of Love 3.
