OPETH's 'Watershed' Cracks Australian Top 10! - June 8, 2008
OPETH's new album, "Watershed", has entered the Australian chart at position No. 7. As previously reported, the CD has also landed at No. 14 in Holland and No. 15 in Japan (Oricon chart).

"Watershed" was recorded in the band's native Sweden and produced by frontman/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt and Jens Bogren. All the songs were written by Åkerfeldt apart from "Porcelain Heart", which was co-written with new guitarist Fredrik Åkesson. One additonal track, "Derelict Herds", was also recorded and this was written by Mikael Åkerfeldt and Per Wiberg. On top of this, three cover songs were recorded. "Bridge of Sighs" from ROBIN TROWER's 1974 LP of the same title, "Den Ständiga Resan" (sung in Swedish) by MARIE FREDRIKSSON as well as the classic ALICE IN CHAINS song "Would?" The album was recorded at Fascination Street studios between November 1 and December 13, 2007. Some additional recording was done between January 3 and January 7.

OPETH recently filmed a promotional video for an edit of the song "Porcelain Heart". The clip was directed by Lasse Hoile (PORCUPINE TREE) and shot in Vaxholm, Sweden at the marvellous Bogesund castle, built in the 1640s. The edit was done by Jens Bogren and OPETH mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt.

Yep. The masses in America are too busy with such deep masterpieces as "Chicken Noodle Soup", "My Humps", "Grills", or whatever song is big now about clubbing, gold teeth and necklaces, or whatever Disney managed to pinch out of their asses.

Since our lovely genre doesnt get the publicity out there, why not try to promote it yourself. Its not like Opeth's message is Dying Fetus's as an example. Ive turned a few ''im too old for that shit'' guy around, with the likes of Opeth.

...and as a fan since Morningrise I still think they have not put out a bad album, however, this was disappointing, starts out great and then viers off in a melow direction. What happened to the dual harmonies? This is not a death metal album with progressive elements, it's a progressive album with some death metal in it.

and begs the question...

is this their "...and Justice for All"?

This is the first Opeth album I have bought and I haven't really listened to much of their stuff in the past so I was kind of a bit reluctant at first with the death metal growls throwen in with softer vocals and how they mesh, but after a few listens this album has some really quality material on it.

A band like Opeth cracking the top 10 here in aus is huge. Just look at the albums surrounding it. That's fucking fantastic.

You raise a good point, DMIZE. I figure that when Mikael is an old man, he probably wont want to play death metal anymore, and some of us are starting to miss the days when an Opeth album would contain more death metal. I wouldn't be surprised if Mikael decides to make more mellow music just to spite the blabbermouth trolls. This site has such a reputation, and Mikael reads what his fans have to say. Maybe he'll start not wanting to appeal to this fanbase anymore. Watershed has some great metal and great soft stuff... but, sadly, less metal may be what we get in the future.

Wish it would chart like that in the USA.

BTW, if you have a good home theater set up, the 5.1 DVD is freakin AWESOME.

The only dissapoiintment with this album is the opening track and its tempo, and the length of the album, not only has it only 7 tracks but its under an hour. Other than that, this is one of their best... oh, and the booklet is void of lyrics, i hate that!

Great Band...Great Album...

My only gripe is with the collectors Edition

1. Crappy cardboard envelope packaging
2. The Unreadable 5pt script font
3. No Band pictures
4. No Lyrics
5. Putting the bonus tracks on the DVD
6. Where's the cover version of "Would"- oh yeah, RR going to release it on another crappy collector's edition further down the track.

Gimmick band...this generation's Spinal Tap.
*******************************************

This generations Spinal Tap is sell-out-era MetallicA.

Opeth was part of the legendary Lee Barrett-era Candlelight Records, and moved on to Music For Nations, Peaceville, and RoadrunneR records.

I can understand why people who do not like this band, do because they only listen to extreme metal only. Myself I grew up in a house with thousands of classical music LP's, so as a Opeth fan, I expect more out of my metal than just mere half digested chunks of Deicide, Morbid Angel and Napalm Death.

There are a billion blur bands in every sub-genre of rock and metal. Opeth is just a backlash against the speed for the sake of speed mentality, in todays over staturated market.

I am not the bands biggest fan, but I buy there stuff religiously in between those Dimmu Borgir, Crest of Darkness and Cradle of Filth releases !!!!
