NEW YORK DOLLS To Hit The Studio This Year? - June 8, 2008
NEW YORK DOLLS lead singer David Johansen has told Goldmine magazine that the band will hit Europe for some dates this summer, and after that, "I think we're probably going to think about making a studio album," he said. "Yeah, it's an interesting time, because we have no idea how like we're going to proceed with that. I mean, we know we're going to make songs, and we know how to do that, but as far as how we're going to get it out there, we haven't figured that out yet, and that's kind of exciting I think. You know, we've always been kind of like mavericks — mavericks ... now I sound like John McCain (laughs) — but as far as the record business is concerned ... I see people coming up and getting awards, and they go, 'I want to thank this great industry,' and I'm always thinking, 'Oh, fuck you, this great industry. What a joke.' We've always kind of done our own thing."

On April 29, NEW YORK DOLLS released a new live album, entitled "Live at the Fillmore East". Johansen feels the CD, recorded during a two-night stand at the New York venue in December, has captured this version of the DOLLS' concert experience.

"I thought it sounded pretty good," Johansen told Goldmine. "You know, I mean, it's not like I listen to it over and over again, but I guess, you know, it just kind of documents where we're at right now. We've been playing a lot. I think when we first got back together, that was pretty well documented, but it wasn't like we were that hot yet, you know? Because we'd had like three rehearsals and played Meltdown, and now it's like we're a fucking machine, a monster."

The New York Dolls are legendary, but why are they being reported on Blabbermouth? They have almost zero influence on metal.

Maybe they have zero influence on the metal you listen to, but they heavily influenced Motley Crue, Kiss, Hanio Rocks, Guns n Roses etc. Blabbermouth doesn't just cover thrash, black and death metal do they?

I love the original dolls 2 albums.I didnt care for the reunion album because it lacked the punch, the edge, of the originals and the lyrics were aweful.I cringed when I heard "were all in love".However, I can still hear the dolls underneath it all.So, I say if they crank it up a notch and let someone else write the lyrics they may have something.Im not into the whole mindset of "its not how well the dancing bear dances, its that it dances at all", meaning either bring the best you got or wait until you can especially if you happen to be a legendary figure or band.

I thought that the lyrics on Someday...were some of the best lyrics I'd heard from any rock band in a long time....funny, tongue in cheek and smart...oh well, different strokes for different folks!

I'm not a big fan of the band either but to dismiss the influence the New York Dolls had on much of the 80's glam scene is shortsighted.

I guess what I wasnt looking for tongue in cheek so thats maybe why I missed it.I was looking for the way they painted a picture of what was going on at the time in songs like "vietnamese baby" and words that I could relate to like I did when I was a teen and heard "frankenstein".those songs pumped me up.they were rallying songs, at least in my mind.Thats why NYD are often refered to as the roots of punk. The lyrics and the music were intense on these songs.Thats what I was looking for and still hope to see...but yeah, everyone will be effected differently by music. If it reaches people its good, and if it reached you then you are one of the ones it was for.

Someone compared the last album with the classics and was a little negative, but considering all the members they've lost and the lifetime that's gone by since they actually played together...... not too bad at all. They play covers live to get back to their roots. I'm aware that David was doing a completely different style before going back to the Dolls so this is all a miracle and I appreciate Morrissey for making it happen.

The new album should be better than the last since they've gelled as a band.

They are going to play with Blondie in Long Island June 18th.

Someone questioned why NY Dolls are mentioned here.

They mean a lot to hard rock fans and have influenced a lot of bands that aren't necessarily "metal" but are often mentioned here.

I think the band's label has something to do with them being mentioned as well.

Most importantly, they are one of the best bands ever!

FRANKENSTEIN!!!!
