METALLICA Unveils Mysterious New Image/Artwork

METALLICA has posted a mysterious image (see below) on its official web site under the headline "???," leading to speculation that this is the cover of the band's much-anticipated new studio album. The CD is due out in September, with the title expected to be announced soon through the new Mission: Metallica web site. METALLICA will play Tennessee's Bonnaroo festival on Friday, June 13, and the one-day Ozzfest in Dallas on August 9, with a full North American tour in the works for the fall. Just one day after several UK web sites posted early reviews of six new METALLICA songs that were previewed for them in London last week, the reports were all taken down, reportedly at the request of the band's management. One site, The Quietus, told Blinded By The Hype that its reporter at the listening session was not asked at the time to hold back from reporting on what he heard or sign a non-disclosure agreement. The site itself was later contacted and asked to remove the article, which it did to "protect the professional interests of the writer concerned." A representative for METALLICA's management had no comment on the matter, according to The Pulse of Radio. Image displayed via Metallica.com:

Thats awful. Thats not the album cover. Metallica album covers (with the exception of the 90s stuff & St.Anger) have always been epic looking. This is worse than the inflikted cover, im pretty sure this isn't the album cover.

maybe its just a new logo, like the ninja star they did in the 90s. whatever it is, its pretty weird looking.
its basically just two magnets with the metallica M used as electricity...
maybe they are doing this just to piss us off that we have had no answers from their mission metallica, while we are anxiously waiting and screaming in our heads "just release the fucking album already!!"

it's quite easy, actually. If you stare at the center of the picture between the two magnets, you'll begin to see that the outer edges of the electric M's start to protrude and form into slight triangular effects. Then, move your eyes slightly and you will see an arrow between both M's on either side, the points injecting into the basins of the magnets. What this represents is a precum ejaculation into your hot anus when Metallica once again fucks you and your money.

I think this is good.
It's modern and simple, and would definately stand out on the racks.
And of course, it's 2008 now, not the 80's; Album sleeves should be moving forward- not just regurgitating the endless piles of skulls and fantasy /horror orientated "artworks" or the retarded photoshop splurges that have polluted the sleeves for far too long (see Benediction's new sleeve) and made the metal genre even more laughable.

It looks more like a single cover artwork. Singles tend to look more simple-looking than album atwork. This can also mean that the new single could have to do with magnets or something like that...

Being a graphic designer, my guess is that it means Metallica Carbon Copy. Given the past of regurgitated shit that has been released. The only thing that is cool about this "logo" is that is uses the old school M. Other than that, pretty much worthless. Anyone with Illustrator or Corel Draw can do this. If this is any indication of what the new album is gonna be, we are all going to be disappointed.

Did I understand this article correctly? Metallica invited reviewers to hear 6 of the new songs, and when they were honest about what they heard, they took the reviews down and started hunting down every copy of them that might exist out there?

but I guess a band can do whatever they want w/ their logo. It's theirs to bastardize if they want to.
I think it's a cool design as a whole. The parts work well together. Good gestalt. Nice way to get more mileage out of that godforsaken 'M'.
This was probably just James fucking around with Adobe Illustrator and saying "fuck it, post that up on the site. Start some shit swirling"
It must be great to be in a band that everyone, the lovers & haters alike, are waiting on your every move.
Maiden does and always will own these cheese dicks anyway.
