ANTHRAX: Audience Recording Of Three New Songs Available
- June 11, 2008
|
|
An audience recording of three brand new ANTHRAX songs — as performed by the band on May 28, 2008 at Double Door in Chicago, Illinois — can be heard below. The Chicago concert was the group's first with new singer Dan Nelson, who officially joined ANTHRAX in December 2007 as the replacement for Joey Belladonna. The group's setlist was as follows: 01. Fight 'Em Til You Can't (new song) 02. Random Acts03. Got The Time04. Madhouse05. Revolution Screams (new song) 06. Room For One More07. Safe Home08. What Doesn't Die09. Antisocial10. Vampyres (new song) 11. Inside OutEncore: 12. Indians13. Only14. I Am The LawRock photographer Chad Lee has posted photos from the concert at www.rockconcertfotos.com. In a recent interview with Metal Maniacs magazine, ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian stated about Dan Nelson's singing style, "I've compared him to John Bush on steroids because he definitely comes from more of that tone, but also because he's only 31 or 32 years old. He listens to the more extreme side of heavy metal. He was in a lot of bands that were certainly more extreme than ANTHRAX so he's able to take what he has a lot further. That's not to say you're going to hear an ANTHRAX record with death metal or hardcore vocals or anything like that. The guy's a singer and a great singer at that. I'm just saying that he's already got this really powerful singing voice and he's able to take it to a level we've never explored before. We have a bunch of spots on this record where it really works." When asked if all the music and vocal melodies/lyrics for the new songs had already been "pre-written" for Nelson prior to the singer joining the band, Ian said, "Before Dan, we had ideas for maybe two songs and not even any lyrics yet. Once Dan got involved, that's when the light bulb went off over my head. I wasn't writing anything because I had no focus as far as who was actually going to be singing this stuff. Once I had Dan's voice in my brain it totally opened the door for me writing-wise. It's been really collaborative since then. We all get together, listen to the music and work on the melody lines until everybody is happy. We have two songs done. There's a song called 'Revolution Screams' which is a straight-up thrash tune. There's another called 'Fight 'Em Til You Can't' which sounds like ANTHRAX from 1987 but in 2008. It's total old-school thrash. I'm totally stoked on them!" "Fight 'Em Til You Can't": "Revolution Screams": "Vampyres":

They did not play Caught In A Mosh. It was on the setlist but was NOT played.
That being said, the new songs were pretty bad ass.

However, I am excited about some new Anthrax music and look forward to the new CD with Dan - that Double Door show was great! Having said that, some more vocal work needs to be done on "Vampyres".

... though I do wish the new singer well.
It's pretty clear that Anthrax fans were very evenly split between Belladonna and Bush.
Seems to me that those who preferred Belladonna, whether because he was the original or because of his voice, aren't going to dig this guy because he's completely different in both regards.
Meanwhile, if you liked John Bush better, than the hiring of Dan Nelson seems almost like an admission from the band that they screwed up in pushing Bush to leave the band on bad terms, which only makes one feel pissed at Anthrax for screwing up a good lineup.
Either way, it seems like a net loss for Anthrax, no matter how good and deserving Nelson might be.
I wonder if time will tell that they should have hired a singer who represented a fresh start entirely, and not one who closely resembles either Belladonna or Bush?

you make some good points, but i kind of disagree. i MUCH prefer belladonna to bush, but i am still welcoming nelson on board. the thing is, even though anthrax made some great records w/ bush, a LOT of times when bush sang the older material it was painful. nelson sounds a bit like bush, but with MUCH more of a range. he can hit the notes of a lot of belladonna-era anthrax, and bush just never could. so, in that respect, i feel dan could be an excellent choice. he definitely needs work on his stage banter though. but of course my preference would have been a new album with belladonna!

Makes a change to see an Anthrax thread where they`re not getting bashed. Could these new songs have won the doubters over?
I`m impressed, all 3 sound great to my ears and I`m sure will be even better when heard properly.

bush might not have had the pipes for the joey material originally, but toward the end of his tenure at the mic, the guy had em nailed, obviously the were re-arranged slightly, but can you seriously say the material on greater of two evils doesnt fucking rock hard?
this guy is a second rate bush immatator from whats displayed on these 3 songs.

...one of my favorite bands.
Didn't like them quite as much with Bush, but they had still had some great stuff with him, and were DEFINITELY on the right track with WCFYA.
I can't see myself supporting them with this guy...Anthrax were always about breaking the stereotype of metal bands, and with this guy and his combo "Bush wannabe"/"Anselmo wannabe"/cookie monster vocals, they've become just another faceless and soulless metal band that plays fast.
If people like this guy's vocals, more power to you...IMO, he'll be the final nail in Anthrax' career because with his SEVERELY limited vocal ability they'll sound just like everyone else.

"but can you seriously say the material on greater of two evils doesnt fucking rock hard?" personally, yes, i can. i think that album is not good at all, i tried listening to it again not too long ago and it did nothing for me. i just don't think bush sounds good on it. just my opinion of course. but don't get me wrong - bush has a killer voice and made some great records with anthrax. but his lack of range was a limiting factor and REALLY showed when anthrax performed older material. i saw them live with bush twice, and some of it just sounded god awful.

Although I'm a huge Anthrax fan, Ive got to agree with the last 2 comments. Come on folks, are you honestly saying you think Dan Nelson has a great voice?! John Bush is one of the greatest singers in metal. He wiped the floor with Joey Belladonna and The Greater of 2 Evils is proof of that. I was gutted to hear that John was not going to be back with the band after the pointless reunion tour and I'm annoyed after hearing the new guy. Personally I think that Fight em Til You Cant is easily the strongest song here (musically it's pretty sweet) but Dans voice is pretty dull and lacking originality. Anybody else think he sounds kinda like Ryan McCombs of Drowning Pool more than anyone? I'll reserve full judgement until I hear the new album but Ive gotta say I'm not holding my breath. Let's hope the band proves me wrong.

This Dan guy is a Phil clone crossed with a 2nd rate John Bush. I've always at least "liked" Anthrax regardless of the singer but this new shit is just terrible. I'm not just bashing the singer, it's my honest opinion that the songs are shit too - except "Fight Em...".
I think Anthrax is capable of finding a singer of a MUCH higher calibre.

I'm sure glad you never "licked" Anthrax. That would be a funny stroy though, you goofy bastard.
His Royal Lordship of Excellence: I disagree that if you liked Joey better than John that I can't get behind this new 'Thrax. I like John's voice, but the music itself started to tank (Stomp 442, anyone?). Besides, Joey belongs in Anthrax singing their shit. Dan's voice is okay and, thanks to John for paving the way, seems to fit in.
Who's actually IN Anthrax now? Is it one of those Exodus or Meta Church situations where 80%-90% of the lineup that everyone knows and loves is absent? (deaths notwithstanding)

I swear, I'm the only guy who loved that record. It had AMAZING groove to it.
I can't even jump into the singer discussion... none of them have been awful, and I have enjoyed all the stuff they've done with the exception of Volume 8 - some of those tunes were a little too filler-ish for me, even though Catharsis was just fucking CRUSHING.
Their live show is always awesome, and when I met them a few times, they were really cool guys, so best of luck to them.

I don't what the guy up there is talking about with "amazing groove" but I don't listen to Anthrax for "groove". Put on the Mind Funk record for some groove.
And I don't understand people always spouting off about Belladonna's "high pitched" vocals. Did he do some high pitched screams now and again? Sure. But there was more to his singing than that. Just because he wasn't throwing up into his mic doesn't mean he was Warrel Dane or something.

True, but I never count Neil Turbin. Who does? Deathriders! AHAHAHA.. whatever.
Face it, Anthrax didn't hit until Belladonna, but I always liked (not LICKED like an earlier poster) John Bush better.
Though I've LICKED other Bush..
And Stomp 442? Might be my single favorite Anthrax album. As far as I'm concerned, that's the first album they took any chances on as writers. Stretched themselves a bit. Like Motley Crue on Generation Swine, or Kreator on 'Endorama'..
I always like the oddball releases other people seem to hate. Call me a fan of progress..
