METALLICA: New Album Title Revealed
- June 14, 2008
|
|
METALLICA has announced the title of its new album — "Death Magnetic" — by posting the finalized/complete version (see below) of the image that originally appeared on the band's official web site on Tuesday (June 10) under the headline "???." The CD is due out in September. A short video clip revealing the new album title and featuring an audio sample of a brand new song can be viewed below. Just one day after several UK web sites posted early reviews of six new METALLICA songs that were previewed for them in London in early June, the reports were all taken down, reportedly at the request of the band's management. METALLICA has since issued a statement blaming a management "error" for the move and has apparently asked for the reviews to be re-posted. METALLICA performed a "secret" show Thursday night (June 12) at The Basement in Nashville, Tennessee in front of an estimated 175 people. The band played Tennessee's Bonnaroo festival Friday (June 13) and is scheduled to perform at the one-day Ozzfest in Dallas on August 9, with a full North American tour in the works for the fall. First, they used the word 'Death' in an official title. Off the top of my head, that's probably the first time since the classic tune CREEPING DEATH. So that's one good thing.
Second, the audio sample souds great! Much better than anything else from this band since '...Justice'. (I'm one of the few who thinks the Black album kinda sucked, too.) So - even if the short sample is the ONLY good thing on the new album, it's still enough to guaranty it'll be the best thing this band has done in at least 17 years!
That's awesome and depressing all at the same time.

But, who really gives a shit about the title on the record anyway??? It's not the most imaginitive thing I've ever heard, nor the worst. It goes with the logo they picked I guess???
Either way, it's of no concern to me. What matters to me (even though Metallica really doesn't matter much to me these days) is what the record sounds like. That little clip is hardly enough to get me excited at all, personally.

The riffage sounds fucking great, but its not enough to convince me that it will be a solid album. HOPEFULLY it will but if its not why get bummed out, anything after ...And Justice was not that great, so Im just gonna wait this out until September to see how it turns out. Hoping for the best :)

What I've heard of the album so far is good... though I haven't heard much. Definitely not gonna get my hopes up. Remember when they posted that clip of "St. Anger" with all the double-bass drumming? That seemed good at the time too, haha.

I think he actually wrote: "anything after ...And Justice was not that great". Actually, I'm pretty sure he wrote that, since I copied and pasted. What the hell is up today with metallica fans not being able to read simple items of writings?
Anyway, don't care that much about the title, even though it's probably the best metallica title in a couple of decades (which is not saying much). I'd say we better keep our expectations low and hope for a nice surprise! After all, having gone from Bob Rock to Rick Rubin sounds like a good progress to me, hopefully it will bear some fruits!

No more arty crap, just a solid heavy metal title....
Music sounds good too, but the only thing I'm worried about is production. Last night i was watching a bunch of live videos from 89-92 and the guitars cut through you like a samurai sword, whereas these guitars kinda buzz in a boogie woogie way...
Hopefully they find some crunch in the mixing... if thats possible, I don't know anything about recording/mixing...

the word DEATH is in the title, i predicted this a couple of yearrs ago. I am glad. The title is good, the material thus far is good, when we get to hear it all proprly, good will be exchanged for AWESOME! I can feel it.
One other thing, you know how none of us can actually understand why Metallica made hard rock albums, why megadeth made a pop rock album and why slayer are scared to play extremely fast now....i also wonder....why if you've "given up" on the mighty metallica, why oh why do you bother posting stuff on blabbermouth? 1. it doesnt hurt the band you so badly hate, and 2. The name doesn't bother me nor does it impress me. 1. the bass can be heard in the mix. finally! 2. nothing really stood out or impressed me (clips were too short) 3. from what I could hear, it sounds like Metallikatz more than Metallica...the production and Kirk's wah solo sound like they do in their various covers...kinda groove metal? 4. St. Anger was an over-hyped mess, but i considered it a step in the right direction...I still feel a bit swindled 5. I'm afraid this album will be over-hyped too... Better than St. Anger, but mediocre at best.

The title as it is is way better than 'Magnetic Death'...that's just stupid. What would that be, like dying from being too close to a magnet??
Also, I'm surprised no one has mentioned they're going back to the old Metallica logs not used prominently since Justice. I bet the cover will be just like the photo above, white cover with Metillica in black old school style and the title.

seems a little predictable. I mean Kill 'em all was their first. "Let's see, our first cd had 'Kill' in the title, so let's use a word that's different but similar - hmm... HEY! I got it! Death"! Then "Now what is associated with Metal"? The guys brainstorm and 12 hours later here's what we hear "You know, I was thinkin that a MAGNET sticks to metal". Thus another household name was born.
Unless there's more mind games and a rebus starts taking place and in the end Megadeth is one of the words in the title after letters are added and subtracted everyday.
Hope so cuz I think they could do better.
And my fave apparently didn't make it:
DEETIC
Classic title had they stuck with that.

BRILLIANT title, very original and catchy but most of all... METAL. If the rest of the album maintains anything close to the quality and originality of the title and that clip for it's entire length we may actually have another classic on our hands.
A tall order, but you you never know. And you just have to dig "Death Magnetic" accompanied by the oldschool logo.

I wish them luck, but I definitely won't be waiting and hoping for anything better than what they've been doing lately. I'll wait about a month after the release to see how the real reviews went. If they've really gotten their act together then I'll buy it, but if it's more of the same then it doesn't really matter to me... there's lots of other stuff to listen to. 2008 has been a pretty good year for releases so far.

Why are so many people bitching about the 'album art'?
Nowhere is it mentioned that this is the album cover art. Just an image from their website.
It only states the NAME of the album has been revealed. I'm pretty sure the final album cover art will be different. BIG bands like Metallica NEVER release full titles and album art in advance anymore -- too much of a risk with all the pirating operations out there. They'd be hitting the internet stores in no time advertised as the 'real thing'.
Name: Death Magnetic.
Cover art: UNKNOWN.

After living with the title for a few hours, it sounds better to me. I'm surprised at the mostly positive reaction here. James talked about mortality in David Fricke's Rolling Stone write-up. Apparently one of the songs is called "My Apocalypse", with James talking about "the end I see coming" or something like that. So I guess the title should be read as Death:Magnetic--i.e. death is pulling us all toward it. So maybe we got a concept album about death coming? Sounds cool--fingers still crossed tho. But that riff on the announcement video gives me some hope.

Metallica- Thanks, in advance, for another GREAT album!
^^^^
Must have too much time of their hands... Um like 17 or 18 years...
OK so now I wonder if the English teachers will moan about the wording of the title. I won't go there but I prefer Mangnetic Death. Kiddies, mangnetic is an adjective...
Got home from camping last spring. Saw people, places, and things. We barely had arrived, Friends asked us to describe The people, places, and every last thing. So we unpacked our adjectives.
I unpacked "frustrating" first. Reached in and found the word "worst." Then I picked "soggy" and Next I picked "foggy" and Then I was ready to tell them my tale, 'Cause I'd unpacked my adjectives.
Adjectives are words you use to really describe things. Andy words to carry around. Days are sunny, or they're rainy. Boys are dumb or else they're brainy. Adjectives can show you which way.
Adjectives are often used to help us compare things, To say how thin, how fat, how short, how tall. Girls who're tall get taller. Boys who're small get smaller, Till one is the tallest and the other's the smallest of all. We hiked along without care. Then we ran into a bear! He was a hairy bear! He was a scary bear! We beat a hasty retreat from his lair, And described him with adjectives!
Turtle: Wow! Boy, that was one big, ugly bear!
You can make even adjectives out of the other parts of speech like verbs and nouns. All you have to do is tack on an ending like "-ic" or "-ish" or "-ary." For example: This boy can grow up to be a huge man, but still have a boyish face. Boy is a noun, but the ending "-ish" makes it an adjective, boyish, that describes the huge man's face. Get it?
Next time you go on a trip, Remember this little tip: The minute you get back, They'll ask you this and that. You can describe people, places, and things. Simply unpack your adjectives. You can do it with adjectives. Tell 'em about it with adjectives. you can shout it with adjectives.

It's a fucking album title. It doesn't mean shit about the album.
That will speak for itself when it comes out. You can have the most badass album title in the world, that doesn't mean shit about the content.
I'm willing to be patient and see what transpires.
The only thing that pisses me off about this band is that they've been around for 25 years and this will only be their 9th album? And they've reduced it to 10 songs to boot? Come on, at least put out a double CD or something for the fans sake.
Five years of waiting desreves more than what's coming. Quit these two and a half year tours of hitting every city and every town twenty miles from that city twice!! You're not getting any younger.

For anyone who was carving Slayer and Metallica in the desk in 7th grade detention or in school suspension, I hope this album kicks ass. Metallica still means something to me. back then it was "on the right track" 500 word essays on how I will get back on track, and I usually got out of school suspension for writting what I did. I had kill 'em all to back me up...
Now I'm just fucking hoping for 1 kick ass album... just one... I don't give a shit for most of the bashers on the site. could give two fucks. just give me one fucking album that I can skip work with and smoke a joint and say, fuck yeah, I love this shit...
Yeah, I'm a 'tallica fan... my sorry old ass needs this one to kick some serious ass so I can go fuck some young kids mothers.

i must admit, i kinda like it myself... guess that makes me a fanboy or dumbass or whatever. so be it. im actually anxious to hear this one which is something i havent been able to say since right before Justice was released.
After Cliff died, and the release of garage days re-revisited, ( whatever uber Metallica fans, though alot of us have grown to like that ep, it was not well liked by ALOT of early era fans at its initial release) i was quite skeptical about their next album. i remember in June 1988 they played 2 days at the Rubber Bowl in Akron Ohio on the Monsters of Rock tour. on one of the days they played (at the time) 2 new songs from Justice. i liked the songs and when the album was released i bought it.
Its a shame there are so many ways to record live performances nowadays or they would probably play some new material now. thanks internets...

there's more new Metallica music leaked on the internet and it certainly doesn't sound like the glory days from the 80's. The narration is in Espanol but the music speaks for itself.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrgeYBhx95Q
And there's video footage that'll be part of their promo video. The music starts at 1:30 and runs until 2:10.

And Metallica hasn't put out any good orginal tunes in 20 years. I hope Rubin makes a difference. I am one hater who hopes to be put in his place and amazed at some new and great Metallica tunes...but I won't hold my breath. Haters like me become the way we are because we loved this band so dearly for so long and were disappointed by them so many times. I hope they turn the tide. They could, after all, the name Metallica still matters.

Well I hope they put more thought into the music than the album title. If "Death Magnetic" sounds in any way as good as the Black Album, I will be thoroughly impressed, considering what they've been crapping out at us since. If its true metal resembling anything since Black Sabbath arrived, other than Nu-Metal or Glam, I'll take it.

Death Magnetic. It's a little cheesy in my opinion, but so were a lot of the great 80s titles. And that makes it cool. It's grown on me in the last hour. I'll keep repeating it to myself.
S'long as I keep my expectations low, I may even like this album.

and i quote from $profit$
It works as a title...
2008 has been a pretty good year for releases so far.
all i can say is ...are you fucking retarded?...you have to wait for a bunch of no talent non musician dick grubbing fucks to tell you what the album sounds ilke?....
are you really that afraid to listen to it and make a decision by yourself?... id rather pull the plug on myself that go that pathetic route....

Death Magnetic? What a terrible album title, its even worse than St. Anger.. i think Metallica have definatley been slipping down the slippery slope of metal.. It started off badly , then the album titles got better, then Black, Load, Re-Load, St. Anger.... dear oh dear, the new album title sounds like a rejected comic book hero created by a toddler.. I love Metallica, but I hope that this album title doesnt indicate the direction they are going in. Keeping a reserved hope for them.

Great title! It's most difficult to come out with original album title in this years (just check google and you'll see - there's no other subject except Metallica's new album title).
The bashers once again proves their mental instability - now they are bitching and scorning at Metallica's return to the metal scene (people - negativity is not good for your health). I gotta be honest - I'm not going to be happy if this album is return to the 80's. I'm happy that this new riff reminds more to the early Korn than to AJFA (except it's not low tuned). Anyway I have no doubt that Metallica will put out something brilliant, as always.

The old logo with death in the title, solos, thrash songs, epic songs- this is the shit that used to give me goosebumps in the 80's awaiting the arrival of every Metallica record. I guess you're a bedwetting "'tallica" nuthugger who was born after the release of Master Of Puppets. And got into this band during the 90ies.
It still strikes me as odd how little current "'tallica" fanboys know about the metal scene out there and consider this band to be the "gold standard" still. On an artistic level? Not even close.
"Death Magnetic" may be a decent metal release and the band Metallica may be back to a certain degree, we'll see. But to even think Hetfield & Co. can, nowadays, achieve a level of excellence comparable to bands like Opeth or Nevermore/Warrel Dane or Testament is amusing.
Listen to these aforementioned bands and expand your musical horizon, toddler. As well as your vocabulary. Basically, you suck. And your unsubstantiated "opinion" means jack shit.

Whatever... (Is this Chuck Billy in disguise? LOL)
I love Testament & I bought Formation... but, face it... it's heavy & all but, it's largely forgettable... with the exception of track 6... That one riff is interesting enough for repeat listens...
The new Metallica snippets are ALREADY more memorable & I can't wait to get the new cd...
Folks who don't like it can get their panties in a bunch if they want...

Operth is lame. Metallica is 50 times better.
If you want some epic music, skip Opeth and go listen to Agalloch, who crush Opeth in every way possible.

i love metallica's first five albums, but if this album is sh*t, then i'm sorry to say that metallica were nothing but frauds all these years. A good band masquerading as a great one.
Truly great bands never ever ever release anything thats straight up bad. It may be subpar but it is always at least interesting with some redeeming qualities. Case in point: zeppelin, gnr, megadeth, beatles, pink floyd never ever ever even recorded anything that was straight up BAD.
metallica released 3 albums in a row that were straight up bad. if this album is kick ass...i will forgive and call them great once more. if not, they will continue to be frauds to me. well, not cliff, and hammett i already knew was a fraud, but hetfield and ulrich will officially be frauds.

Metallica have always had crappy album covers and titles, big deal. as far as the music goes, Metallica's first 3 albums are ultimate metal classics. I personally didn't care for much stuff they did after and justice for all. Then you got the people who go into then in the 90's that like the black album and load. No matter what they have people that will always buy their stuff and go see them. if i can get tix cheap enough i would gladly see em again. I never underestimate this band. they are capable of writing some of the best metal ever.

Are you serious?? Metallica in the early days formed the paths that these bands walk on, they paved the way for modern metal and those bands you mentioned should all Bow to the awesome force that is Metallica... Metallica has been having an identity crisis and seriously who can blame them they are getting up there in years.... but there is no reason that Metallica armed with all the talent they had in the 80's and 90's and lets face it they didnt lose it, its all still there just waiting to be tapped again... they just have to find the right vehical, the right key to bring about that incredible drestructive force they created through Puppets and Justice.. Metallica is legendary and thus are above and beyond your simple criticisms plebian. Whatever they do now is wholely inconsequential to the epic music they made in their hayday... but if they can pull out another epic, another masterpiece this far down the road... it doesnt really mattered because they are immortalized in music forever regardless.

...but really, was "Ride The Lightning" an actual good title when you REALLY think about it?
Of course it's a classic album, but I think the music ends up defining the name in the end.

if this album sucks, metallica's resume will be: 5 classic albums and 4 sucky ones. doesn't sound like the resume of a legendary band to me, especially when you consider that mustaine helped power 2 of the classic albums.
truly great bands never even release one straight up bad album, much less 4.

Don't put the vocals in front in the mix-
it sounds awkward and has the singer wanting to be cool (yeah, yeah phrasings)- and also leading the band andthe song.
It really worked when the music was controlling the song movement- and the singer was a voice within the cacaphony----------not the singer "performing" and the music circling around the singer
Until the last 80's album, you didn't have to hear the lyrics to know the direction of the song- it served to articulate what you heard (as a voiceover describing the music), and was secondary to the music- with the vocals upfront the lyrics are the direction (??????????) and the music is there to compliment (??????????????). This doesn't work for this group.
The interludes were not in the older songs for the purpose of excess- the interludes were very, very important to the movement and direction of the song- the lyrics were an explanation that you already somewhat understood from the music, therefore it wasn't necessary to spend to much time speaking. Think of their best songs- interludes and the lyrics were secondary; now - (yeah, yeah, ooooooh) because there isn't the direction now. In addition, putting vocal in front has toned down and changed the delivery of the lyrics, with the band's singer now becoming a "lead singer" (uhhh).
In the samples I have heard, the vocals are still leading the mix- don't expect too much. Previously the group created music with descriptive lyrics; now they make sound to go along with the lyrics. Yes some solos and interludes would be nice, however, it seems they are just there for sound- not to communicate anything. If you listen to any of their recent songs- you wouldn't know what was being communicated without the lyrics (just sounds and studio sessions)- and that's not good for the group.

I mean, we thought "St. Anger" was going to be amazing, but it turned out to be more of a statement than METALLICA music that we enjoy playing live. It was more of a purge, just getting that shit out of me, as a catalyst for the next chapter of METALLICA.

Metallica sold out years ago, yes i'll listen to the album but i'll never buy it. They are way to civilized now, Testaments new album just came out a while back and it shows what TRUE metal is all about, they are around the same age and still have it. Metallica have been struggling since 1999 to get anything back to the way it was. The music sounds ok but NOT puppets or justice like at all. James voice does sound better but he still straings to much to growl. So i'll stick with Testament, Exodus, Nevermore, Opeth, Into Eternity, and even Slayer. I havent cared or listened to Metallica for years now, i'd like to keep it that way.:)
