IRON MAIDEN Hit By Power(slave) Outage At Madison Square Garden
- June 16, 2008
|
|
|
A BLABBERMOUTH.NET user has submitted the following report:
"There was a strange event right in the middle of [IRON MAIDEN's] set [at Madison Square Garden in New York City Sunday night, June 15]. Halfway through the song 'Powerslave', the power died to the sound system, and MAIDEN were onstage with full lights, shrugging their shoulders. I was right behind the soundboard, and there was never any problem at that end. In fact, [cycling star] Lance Armstrong and [actress] Kate Hudson were standing beside the mixing board making out, which made the whole situation even weirder. Who's the MAIDEN-head in that celebrity family? Anyway, obviously this was a high point of their set, and within a minute after the stalls the band produced a soccer ball on stage and began kicking it around to entertain the fans while the technical nightmare continued. After about ten minutes of silence, Bruce Dickinson picked up one of the Egyptian sarcophagi and began using it as a shield to play soccer. He was pretty good with it, too! This entire time, the lights were fine, and the soundboard was perfectly okay and didn't appear to be reset. There was definitely no panic at the board. Suddenly and happily, Steve Harris's galloping bass reappeared in the monitors, and the band regrouped and moved onto the next song. My friends and I were joking that this was a long-distance dedication from Sharon Osbourne, and evidently Dickinson thought the same. As soon as his mic worked, he muttered dramatically something like: 'The revenge of Sharon...the wicked witch of the west rises again!' Strong words, preached to a crowd of 18,000. MAIDEN had spent the whole night, and indeed the past two years, proving themselves leagues above the egg-throwing spat at Ozzfest 2005. Evidently, they are still sensitive to the long-reaching powers of the Sharon. Why would he even joke about that if he didn't think it was possible?"

It happened during the last chorus of powerslave which kinda sucked cuz everyone was going crazy and was so into it. The band handled it real well though. Amazing show.

Saw them Wednesday, KICKASS motherfucking show!!! Owning their CD's is one thing, but seeing them live is the way to really experience Maiden.
Goddamn, that show kicked so much ass, up there with Mago De Oz's Chicago show a few weeks ago.

Hah, the exact same thing (with football and all) happened at the first night at London Earl's Court in december 2006. Apart from it wasn't during Powerslave, obv.
Nice story though.

If it were anywhere other than NYC, it would have much worse. The crowd, most of which were at least 30 years old (mostly more than that) was really awesome. Maiden had a hard time for many years, viewed as an out-of-touch laughing stock by the Nu-metal press, especially in the US. It was so great to see an American audience just as into it as they are in the UK, Brazil, Europe or anywhere else,... even singing along to the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, Moonchild and other more obscure songs from their back-catalog.
If anything, the crowd was trying to reassure the band that they weren't gonna fuck things up and started chants during the power-outage.
Jannick Gers, however, still needs to stop skipping around like that. It was truly cringe-able (but his guitar playing was still fantastic).

The show in Cleveland went off without a hitch and was probably the greatest concert experience of my life. I would have been sad if the power had gone out during Powerslave...but this would have been funny as hell to see! Bruce is great with words onstage, that is for sure. I'm thinking Armstrong is the Maiden fan...btw.

They were amazing. If the power had stayed out for more than 10 minutes I think the crowd might've revolted. But everybody seemed to take it well. Bruce pointed out Doug Hall their sound guy and said, "get him."

Water will really fk up your gear. great show though, best set list they had in ages. Would of liked to of heard more Dianno era stuff. Yo...Janick....the Yngwie wanna be guitar flipping looks ridiculous and that skipping around prancing you do, is just down right embarrassing .is this guys guitar even plugged in?

Definitely a memorable evening with Iron Maiden amongst many that I've attended. Maiden handled the power(slave)outage as you would've expected - professionally and with humor. You wouldn't have known that 10 minutes had gone by since they had launched into the last chorus of Powerslave. Great show overall. The Sharon comment was a nice touch but who knew we'd get to see 2 events in one night. A Maiden concert & a soccer exhibition featuring Maiden and an egyptian Statue. I'd say we got our moneys worth!
