EXODUS Re-Recording 'Bonded By Blood', Paying Tribute To PAUL BALOFF
- June 19, 2008
|
|
Guitarist Gary Holt of the veteran San Francisco Bay Area thrashers EXODUS has issued the following update: "While anxiously awaiting our return to Europe for the festival run, we have been quietly working on the 'Bonded By Blood' [ EXODUS's classic 1985 debut album] re-recording in our time off. Rob [ Dukes, vocals] is currently doing vocals in New York, Lee [ Altus, guitar] is doing his solos and I have some touch-ups to do on July 4th. Everything sounds crushing! Guitars are brutal, Tom's [ Hunting] drumming is sick, Rob sounds heavier than ever. I am totally stoked. While working on this, I have been securing the talent for the 25th anniversary version of it, the Paul Baloff trubute. Nine different singers. Can't name names right now, but people have been more than willing to participate. "Next up is Tidal Wave [festival in San Francisco], then beer and sun in Europe. This sitting-at-home shit sucks; I need to be on the road!" EXODUS recently extended its recording agreement with Nuclear Blast Records, whom Holt called "the greatest label in metal." The band's brand new album, "The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit B", is due out later this year. EXODUS' video for the song "Riot Act" was directed by Jon Schnepp of "Metalocalypse" (on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim) for Schneppzone Inc. The clip, which made its TV debut in December on MTV2's "Headbanger's Ball", can be viewed below. "Riot Act" comes off "The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A", which sold 3,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release back in October 2007, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD was recorded at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, California with producer Andy Sneap ( MEGADETH, MACHINE HEAD, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY).

Personally I never want to hear anyone else sing those classics (no matter who it is), so count me right the fuck out.

God, I hope they're joking. If it ain't broken don't fix it. There is absolutely no need to re-record a thrash metal classic. Personally it's the only album of theirs worth owning. I felt after Bonded By Blood they became some kind of a joke they way Anthrax did after Spreading the Disease. Just my opinion people. Btw, the new Judas Priest album kicks ass.

Why are they fucking with perfection? BBB has GREAT production. GREAT performances. And Paul Baloff.
It's not like Slayer's "Hell Awaits" which could really benefit from a re-recording and better production.

Anthrax re-recorded their shit with Bush years back and it was great. If you dont want it, dont buy it. And of course bailoff's family will get some $$ because he wrote the lyrics to those tracks i believe. They will get a good kickback from royalties. So its not a bad idea for a commemorative thing. .
If the band wants to do it, go for it. Todays technology can give it a swift kick in the ass.. But if you dont want it, just dont buy the fucking thing.
Really though, its just a CD.... get over it. The band has the right.

All fun records to just rock the fuck out to. I'm looking forward to this. Especially excited to see who the guest vocalists are (not a big Rob Dukes fan). Nothing can replace the original, but they're not looking to. Just listen and enjoy. They're doing it in tribute to Paul, so where's the problem? Some people just like to bitch......

Paul Baloff was the best vocalist Exodus ever had. In my eyes, they already re-recorded this album when they did the Another Lesson in Violence cd. Bonded by Blood is a historical landmark in the history of Metal and I see no reason for them to do another. That's like the great state of Texas building another Alamo next to the real one and saying it's a tribute to those who died. The best tribute is preserving the history as it already is and ensuring it's heard by future generations they way it was intended to be heard...with Baloff! It's a shame Paul died when he did because I would have loved to hear what they would have done with him now. At least I could tolerate Zetro, but Dukes! The worst mistake Exodus ever made was hiring this guy. His vocals are more screaming, in the vein of some of these newer aggro-type bands. A mistake indeed.

hear hear the people who say you don't fuck with classic greatness but i point to The Greater Of Two Evils as proof that you can "update" classic songs, and do it right.
Greater wasn't necessarily better, and i will never prefer Dukes to Baloff myself, but when you add a new spin to old, classic tunes they can be great in their own right.
i loved John Bush's voice on the classic tunes. i won't look forward to Dukes outdoing Baloff but the band as a whole and the new recording technologies make me think this could be an interesting corollorary (sp? i'm drunk) to the original classic.
it will never outdo the original but it could live with it.
and Gary > all of you dirty fucks.

Along with Paul Baloff being one of the best thrash vocalists ever, Bonded By Blood was by far the best thrash album of 85 (Hell Awaits, Spreading The Disease be damned), bridging the gap between 84's Ride The Lightning and 86's Reign In Blood, Peace Sells and Master Of Puppets. So in NO WAY should it be fucked around with!!!
Tom, Gary, give Paul the respect he deserves and abandon this project NOW. And focus on what the current Exodus is best at doing.

Personally, I can always dig a tribute/cover album as it's always interesting to hear other old favorite singers/musicians of yours applying their personal artistic twist on an already classic tune.
(And if you were ever a fan of (old) Metallica, don't tell me the ol' thrasher in you didn't enjoy it when Lombardo filled in for Lars on 'Battery' a few years ago)
Anyway, if this is a way for the almighty Exodus to make a living and a bit of money in order to stay alfloat and keep churning out more good, old-fashioned thrash metal THE WAY IT WAS ALWAYS SUPPOSED TO BE - then shit yeah, I'm all for it.

I think it's cool that they want to pay tribute to Baloff.
Quote: "These days it seems like we are getting way more REunions and RErecordings (no offense Testament). I could really go for some cREativity. "
The Testament deal came about when they wanted to remix/remaster the first two albums and Atlantic Records (who owns the master tapes) told them they weren't interested. So they decided to say "Fuck You" to Atlantic and record new versions instead.
Something similar could have happened with Exodus.
