HIMSA Announces Final Show Of Its Career - June 20, 2008
Seattle-based metal quintet HIMSA has announced its plans to disband. The group's bassist, Derek Harn, has issued the following statement on the matter:

"After 10+ years, four releases, countless tours and almost incomprehensible (yet constant) upheaval, the last three years of the band have been relatively stable. Having sacrificed everything we had in order to ensure the band's survival it's time to let it go. We made a great CD ('Summon in Thunder', Century Media); reportedly, our best. We've got a great label. We're getting along, we've toured and we’re fine. It's all good. We're leaving it at that.

"A relatively unremarkable closing to HIMSA's gi-normously dramatic career, there appears to be no acrimony or unpleasantness, simply the end of a blistering, phenomenal, tumultuous era of the metal that HIMSA permeated into the modern musical landscape. References have been made to the band's evolving difficulties with the relentless touring schedules that have been the hallmark of HIMSA's career. "If we can't tour, and our reality is we can't tour as we have in the past, then it's not HIMSA. Better to hang it up than fade away.”

HIMSA will honor its legacy with a final performance at El Corazon in Seattle on August 16.

Fan-filmed video footage of HIMSA performing live in Hamburg, Germany in September 2007 can be viewed below.

Thank you drive through!
Never heard the band, but weren't they getting pretty successful recently? Then to break up at the height of their fame? Hey, I guess it worked for Sublime and At The Gates, so why not? Alot of bands should have done the same thing.

There isn't a single metalcore band, not KSE, not Shadows Fall, not even LOG have come within a hair of a donkey's ass to the success of even nu-metal as far as radio singles, videos, tours, etc.. The only people that hated Metalcore were the real Hardcore kids and the real Metal kids, this shit never even came close to successful or popular on the grand scale of all things Staind, Godsmack, Slipknot or Korn. Metalcore was nothing but a blip on the screen.

I bet that lawsuit from their old guitarist, Matt "Mooch" Wicklund, has a lot to do with it. That could bring down the morale
This sucks...I actually liked Summon in Thunder and it was nice to see Sammi back in the band

Yeah, metalcore is hardly in the same realm as nu metal popularity and success wise (not saying i like nu metal, i hate it). In fact, nu metal's top acts are still bigger than metalcore's top acts. Maybe we could instead compare metalcore's success/popularity to industrial back in the 90s. They had some successful bands back then but other than NIN none truly broke through as a real household name. It doesnt surprise me that metalcore isnt really huge. It doesnt have the type of style to attract a lot of type of fans. For some its too metal, for others too hardcore, for others too melodic and so on...

Here's a radical concept...STOP DISECTING YOUR BANDS INTO STUPID SUB-GENRES!

Seriously, 'core' this and 'core' that. It's lame and pathetic; especially when it's used as an excuse to not like a band (ie: "I can't stand metalcore"). Listen to what sounds good to you, plain and simple.

It was a lot easier back in the day when it was just NWOBHM, death metal, thrash/speed, and black. Now everyone feels the need to put a band squarely into a hole. It's just not possible with the diversity in metal anymore.

So comment on whether or not you care about Himsa disbanding but don't say it's good or bad based on some sort of lame subculture of music you want to make up.

It's getting harder and harder to break through and make money in the music industry now. Either you write great songs and you survive or you don't and you disband. Good luck to HIMSA and their future endeavors.

I have been listening to HIMSA for about 4 years now and this is pretty sad. I liked their music and hope that some of the members continue making more. All the blabber crybabies can keep their comments to themselves. This is so typical of Blabbermouth readers; a band is breaking up and all anyone can do is complain. Go back and listen to your one sub-genre metal if you want.

I will miss HIMSA but life goes on. Too bad they never, ever, ever toured where I live.

Metalcore never caught on with the main stream like the labels thought it would. Basically because it wasn't geared towards the same crowd that embraced regular rock radio or nu-metal. Nu metal acts like Korn, Slipknot, etc.. are still popular because their sound was based on other forms of music, like rap, etc.. combined it with rock and it sold. Drowning Pool and Soil can draw more people in my town than Shadows Fall or Killswitch Engage.

it wouldn't suprise me at all if gas prices had something to do with this. the average cost of filling up the gas tank of a tour bus is about $1200. factor in that bands aren't making anything off cd sales anymore, and you're looking at the beginning of the end for many recording artists. if you're not covering all your living/business expenses with ticket sales, merchandise sales and sponsorship deals you're going to go under.
stories like this might become an everyday thing by the end of the summer.

And I do like what Ive heard of Himsa, certainly. As well as bands like ATR, Shadows Fall, Unearth whom they are often categorized with (fairly or unfairly).

Yeah, nu metal definitely is geared towards the non-metal and even non-rock fan. There are many, many rap fans who love nu metal but no other types of rock. And people wonder why many nu metal bands have toured with rap artists.

Yeah the price of gas is pretty hard for most touring bands, I would think. Or whoever fits the gas bill. And its something like that thatll keep bands from playing 'in the middle of nowhere'. Such as a Wyoming or Montana or North Dakota or Nebraska. On the bright side for fans in heavily populated areas, since bands probably wanna play as many shows as possible (and thus expose themselves and get as much money as possible) theyll probably concentrate on the big metro areas. So instead of, say, 4 shows in the NE maybe theyll play 5 or 6.

"Drowning Pool and Soil can draw more people in my town than Shadows Fall or Killswitch Engage."

Last time I saw Killswitch Engage they sold out a giant theater. Last time I saw Drowning Pool they almost sold out a bar that holds 500.

Now as for metalcore. Metalcore is the hybrid of Metal and Nu-Metal. Believe it or not, go back to some old nu-metal records like Korn or Vision of Disorder or something of the hay-day. Listen to the riffs. Obviously they were early forms of break-downs. Derp.

You have NO idea what you're talking about Hahaha Nu Metal and Metalcore are most DEFINITELY not the same. Metalcore > Nu Metal
The only Nu Metal cds I still love to this day are Deftones "Around The Fur" and "Adrenaline" I hate to even call them Nu Metal at all because they're so much better then that, but Chino does rap a little but made it sound fucking awesome. Fuck the rest.

It is sad to see them go. They can blow any band off the stage with thier live energy.

For those interested: Pettibone will commit full-time to his side band "The Vows". They already have an EP out last year. He will also be involved in 2-3 others. Not sure what the other guys are doing. *note though: Pettibone said he doesn't plan to tour again, ever*
