CELINE DION's Version Of AC/DC's 'You Shook Me' Is 'Worst Cover' Of All Time
- June 22, 2008
|
|
According to the UK's Daily Mail, Celine Dion's cover version of the AC/DC track "You Shook Me All Night Long" has been voted the worst cover song. Dion, 40, has never released the song as a single but performed the "musical offense" at a Las Vegas concert six years ago. A SUGABABES and GIRLS ALOUD version of "Walk This Way", which had been a huge hit for AEROSMITH and rappers RUN DMC, came second. Experts also delivered a verdict on the most successful cover versions. JIMI HENDRIX's cover of the BOB DYLAN song "All Along the Watchtower" topped the list, with the GUNS N' ROSES' version of the WINGS' song "Live and Let Die" and NIRVANA's cover of "The Man Who Sold the World" by DAVID BOWIE also in the top five. The list is published in the July issue of UK's Total Guitar magazine. Worst Cover Songs: 01. CELINE DION - You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) 02. GIRLS ALOUD/ SUGABABES - Walk This Way (RUN DMC and AEROSMITH) 03. WESTLIFE - More Than Words (EXTREME) 04. WILL YOUNG - Light My Fire (THE DOORS) 05. THE MIKE FLOWERS POPS - Wonderwall (OASIS) Best Cover Songs: 01. JIMI HENDRIX - All Along The Watchtower (BOB DYLAN) 02. THE BEATLES - Twist And Shout (THE TOP NOTES) 03. GUNS N' ROSES - Live And Let Die (WINGS) 04. NIRVANA - The Man Who Sold the World (DAVID BOWIE) 05. MUSE - Feeling Good (ANTHONY NEWLEY and LESLIE BRICUSSE) Dion covered the AC/DC classic "You Shook Me All Night Long" as a duet with Anastacia on the VH1 CD/DVD release "Divas Las Vegas 2002", out via Sony Music. Watch video footage of the performance below. GIRLS ALOUD vs. SUGABABES covering "Walk This Way" ( RUN DMC and AEROSMITH):

That should've been #1, absolutely appaling!!! I actually kinda liked the harmonies in the chorus of "You shook me...", but it's still a horrible cover. Celine Dion playing air guitar doesn't make her just a tiny fraction rock 'n' roll...

Celine Dion came out doing the duck walk in high heels. That's pretty impressive. Also, her vocals were probably even better than Brian Johnson's. Anastacia was also good. How can you not enjoy hearing two hot babes singing about some all night shakin' ? It's definitely not the worst cover song ever; I think it's pretty strong. They stayed faithful to the original and rocked it! There are probably a couple worse covers that could be picked off of Slang or Poison'd.

As much as I hate Celine Dion, this version of the Ac/DC classic isn't that bad. It's obviously taken out of its target audience/context and sounds a little weird because of that, I agree. Yet, the delivery was there and let's not forget the band backing her, they're pros.
I guess it just opened a few mainstream people's ear to some a little rockier and, MAYBE, trigger some interest to look out for something heavier in the end. I remember Motley Crue covering Jailhouse Rock and I was hooked as a really youg teenager. Got me curious to check out Maiden, then Metallica and eventually Slayer and bla bla bla, you know the story.

Also, every cover Children Of Bodom have ever done, especially the Oops! I Did It Again one. I know they were trying to be funny, but it's as unfunny and cringeworthy as cover songs come. All Along the Watchtower is a solid, unarguable choice for best cover.

but still, the girls aloud/ sourhags version of Walk this Way is Without a doubt the worst cover of all time.
i think celine and anastasia did it in their own style, which is what a cover is all about, not purley playng it note for note.

Dion's cover of Roy Orbison's "I Drove All Night" definitely takes the cake as far as I'm concerned. Just as Elvis refused to go onstage after him, she should have left the best to the best. Rod Stewart butchering CCR's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" is a close second, followed by his version of Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World", Sepultura doing "Smoke on the Water", Graveyard Classics and so on. I'd definitely agree with "All Along the Watchtower" being the best cover I've ever heard. Dimmu Borgir doing "Burn in Hell" is excellent as well. I still love Mayhem's version of "Visual Agression" by Celtic Frost, even though it isn't the greatest cover out there. I think that was the best Maniac ever sounded in the band, too. That's probably the closest we could come to imagining what Vikernes would have sounded like had he taken over vocal duties as well as bass in '92. There are a ton of better covers out there, I am sure.

Yeah, the Aerosmith cover is God-awful but, be real... The C. Dion version of "Shook Me..." is NOT bad... They were having fun and, they did a fairly faithrul rendition, with the exception that it was sung by females... (who are both fin singers)
Whoever thinks it sucks just has their panties in a bunch... Dion, on her worst day, could blow most singers (regardless of genre) off the stage...

Plus, there's a hip hop version of Whitesnake's "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City" floating around somewhere, that nearly made me vomit when I heard it...

Good to see most people on here being open-minded and defending the Dion
Just to clarify for you guys overseas, the Daily Mail is the most reactionary piece of shit newspaper in the UK. Having Hendrix at No.1 was probably their one token acknowledgement of a black person for that week
As for the worst covers of all time, Marilyn Manson's The KKK Took My Baby Away on the otherwise pretty good Ramones tribute album is even more unlistenably awful than his Highway to Hell on Detroit Rock City (and I LIKE Maz!)
Incidentally, Tori Amos maintains that her cover of Raining Blood was graciously received by the band, who sent her Slayer t-shirts in response (although she's also responsible for a right shocker: a truly horrible version of, if memory serves, Down By The Seaside, on a Zeppelin tribute album. Robert Plant's on it too and he should be ashamed as well. Her version of Thank You is ace though)

I'd say you have to classify one-off live performances different than recorded ones that someone actually put some thought into. Sure the Celine version blows, but it was for a different audience and for a tribute show. The same goes for VR's "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" or Snoop's "Sad But True."
However, there are no excuses for such crap as Sheryl Crow's "Sweet Child of Mine" and Limp Bizkit's "Behind Blue Eyes."
The best cover of all time... Alannis Morisette's "My Humps".

Celine Dion did a nice job on that one. I'm not a fan, but I must admit she has awesome vocal abilities.
That said, here are a few examples of far-more terrible covers:
No Matter What - Def Leppard (Lilian Axe's version is 1000 times better) Sweet Chile O' Mine - Sheryl Crow We're not Gonna Take It - Bif Naked Anarchy in the UK - Megadeth (Motley Crue's version is 1000 times better) Can't Help Falling in Love - UB40 Suspicious Minds - Fine Young Cannibals Sweet Dreams - Marilyn Manson
Cool covers:
Do you Remember Rock and Roll Radio - Kiss Anarchy in the UK - Motley Crue Jailhouse Rock - Motley Crue Helter Skelter - Motley Crue Teaser - Motley Crue Blitzkrieg Bop - Rob Zombie Working Class Hero - Green Day Word Up - Korn Once Bitten Twice Shy - Great White Knockin on Heaven's Door - Guns N Roses Turn the Page - Metallica Rockin in the Free World - Pearl Jam The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana Land of Confusion - Disturbed Bring the Noise - Anthrax/Public Enemy Pretty Woman - Van Halen You Really Got Me - Van Halen (The Kinks should've given them the song)

Didnt Fall Out Boy cover Walk? That was pretty shitty. Also, MCR's cover of 'Astro Zombies' is fucking terrible. I really don't like Thin Lizzy's version of 'Whiskey In The Jar', and Metallica's cover of Thin Lizzy's cover is worse!

i remember seeing celine's abomination on tv back then, i'm surprised i didn't throw my tv out the windor.
cradle of filth's version of "hallowed be thy name" makes me want to rip my ears off. the band itself does that to me but that song was terrible.
i like iced earth's covers album. their "hallowed be thy name" was much better.

Hey. I liked Happiness... too. There's about half of her Strange Little Girls covers album that's good and half I'd throw in the garbage. Her best covers were in the early days when she was doing stuff like Thank You, Hendrix, Joni Mitchell and Nirvana. I once saw her open a show with Raining Blood to the complete bafflement of the audience. Excellent!
I think the Down by the Seaside abomination is on an album called Enconium. It's also got Hootie and the Blowfish on it!
Oh yeah, another rotten cover: Britney's version of I Love Rock And Roll. Ad anytime Disturbed think it's a good idea to do something from the 80s, whether it's Tears For Fears or Genesis... (and before any Britney or Disturbed fans out there get up in arms, I think they've both done some really good stuff too)

...is an awful piece of crap which launched rap rock garbage and made it popular. that song is the reason there's a Linkin Park and a Kid Rock. Bon Jovi - The Boys Are Back In Town was pretty awful. Earache My Eye by either Soundgarden or Scatterbrain and Slayer - In-A-Gadda da vida are pretty good.

This doesnt really suck all that bad. Celine Dion can sing, I dont really care for her style of music, but she can sing! It is very possible that she was having fun with a song she liked, and it wasnt as terrible as it is made out to be.

The walk this way cover was way worse. The celine dion one wasn't that bad, that song was never meant to be a pop song, but it wasn't horrible by any stretch of the imagination.
