JUDAS PRIEST's 'Nostradamus' Is Band's Highest-Charting U.S. Album To Date
- June 25, 2008
|
|
JUDAS PRIEST's new double-disc concept album, "Nostradamus", has sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart. This marks the band's highest-ever chart position in the U.S. In Canada, the CD opened at position No. 9 after shifting close to 4,000 units. "Nostradamus" entered the official Australian ARIA ( Australian Record Industry Association) album chart at position No. 16. JUDAS PRIEST's last CD, "Angel of Retribution", premiered with 58,000 copies in the U.S. back in March 2005 to debut at No. 13. The following are the peak U.S. chart positions for the PRIEST catalog: #11 - "Nostradamus" (2008) #13 - "Angel of Retribution" (2005) #165 - "Demolition" (2001) #82 - "Jugulator" (1997) #155 - "Metalworks" (1993) #26 - "Painkiller" (1990) #31 - "Ram It Down" (1988) #38 - "Priest Live" (1987) #17 - "Turbo" (1986) #18 - "Defenders of the Faith" (1984) #17 - "Screaming for Vengeance" (1982) #39 - "Point of Entry" (1981) #34 - "British Steel" (1980) #70 - "Unleashed in the East" (1979) #128 - "Hell Bent for Leather" (1978) #178 - "Stained Class" (1978) JUDAS PRIEST's most successful album to date is 1982's "Screaming For Vengeance", which spent 53 weeks on the Billboard charts, receiving gold RIAA sales certification on October 29, 1982, platinum on April 18, 1983 and double platinum October 16, 2001. The album included the band's only U.S. top 100 hit single, "You've Got Another Thing Comin'". Other million-seller RIAA certifications for JUDAS PRIEST are "Priest Live" (October 29, 2001), "Turbo" (July 24, 1989), "Defenders of the Faith" (September 26, 1988), "British Steel" (August 9, 1989) and "Unleashed in the East" (November 10, 1989). JUDAS PRIEST also has gold albums certifications (500,000 sales) for "Stained Class" (November 10, 1989), "Hell Bent For Leather" (November 10, 1989), "Point of Entry" (November 10, 1989), "Ram It Down" (July 18, 1988) and "Painkiller" (January 2, 1991). In the band's home country of the U.K., 1980's "British Steel" remains their most successful outing, peaking at No. 4 in the charts and launching three hit singles: "Living After Midnight", which peaked at No. 12; "Breaking The Law" No. 12 and "United" No. 26. Once again...the Top 10 eludes the mighty PRIEST. Too bad...but congrats on the band reaching their highest chart position to date...at this stage of their career no less.
The cd also fared better than AOR on the UK charts.
Love the new record. Love the band. Nothing but respect for PRIEST.

For $59.99 was a great deal last week!
I love the Priest and granted this set does not have any real singles on it, but who cares??? This is different from any Priest CD ever, not as hard or fast as some....nor does it need be!
I love that there are no real breaks between songs and just flows. Give it a chance people!

This is certainly not their best album ever but I'm really glad it's selling so well. Even if you hate this release, just think of this chart position as making up for the inability of classic albums like Defenders and Painkiller to make it that high.

Priest's Top 20 showings during the 80's are actually damned impressive...as records then had to sell much more to reach those heights.
Outside of your American hard rock acts like the Crue and Ratt...it was rare indeed for traditional metal acts to get into the Top 10. Ozzy and the Scorpions being two I can think of off the top of my head.

Ha ha... You can take a shot at Maiden if you want. But both Priest and Maiden's best records were made over 20 years ago...and I've been dissappointed with both bands latest offerings.... You yourself admitted that you think it sucks...then back tracked to show some loyalty to 'your boys'.
I personally loved Brave New World and "like" AOR, though... I actually still listen to these, as I do the true classics.

Once again, to all the "Nostradamus" bashers that are comparing this album to "Painkiller", let's not forget that "Painkiller" was 18 years ago! That's a long time!!! If you remember, Priest was coming off a long and tedious trial dealing with loads of legal issues and when they were done, they got in the studio and wrote songs from pure inspiration. The album was heavy but they needed to write an album like that to release all their aggression.
Like I said, it was 18 YEARS AGO! And 18 years before "Painkiller" was 1972, "Rocka Rolla" wasn't even thought of yet!
So here is it 18 years after "Painkiller" and Judas Priest members are well in their 50's and writing a mature album for a mature audience. So for all you bashers of "Nostradamus", I guess you're still stuck in 1990 and haven't quite matured yet.
Metal isn't just power and speed, there are some bands out there that like to write with melody, emotion and energy. Sorry to say, but Judas Priest is one of those bands. If you don't like Metal and always bash things, than why are you here?
Anyway, Judas Priest has stood the test of time and will forever be the Metal Gods!

Nostradamus is a great album. While their "best" work would have to be Screaming for Vengeance, this is their "Greatest" work. I see where people say this is unlike anything they have ever done, well they are wrong. It is just like the songs those people skipped past to get to the "rockers".
In Nostradamus Judas Priest used every musical style in their arsenal. Nostradamus is filled with styles that I haven't heard since their first four albums. Listen to "Prelude", Dreamer Deceiver, Last Rose of Summer, Beyond The Realms of Death, Dying to Meet You, Winter/Deep Freeze/Winter Retreat, and other songs like those. You will find those same styles on Nostradamus. You will also find parts that sound like they are straight from Defenders of the Faith and Painkiller. You won't find any "Breaking the Law"'s or "Living After Midnight"'s on Nostradamus though, the album is way too technical for some simple little diddys.
This is a complete and signature Judas Priest album. It is a great album. Sorry some of you just don't get it. Music can be hard and melodic. I love how they used the keyboards in Persecution, perfectly molded with Painkiller riffs and a Defenders of the Faith style solo/interlude. If I didn't know better, I would think they brought in John Lord from Deep Purple to do teh keyboards. Conquest sounds like something styraight off of Sin After Sin.
It is sad that there are some out there who won't give anything a chance that doesn't have guitar solos every 10 seconds and drums blazing like a machine gun. There is so much more to metal that that. Metal is such a wonderful and diverse genre of music with some of the most talented musicians ever, to bad some are limiting themselves to just one facet of the music.
If you don't like it, hell that is your right. if you say it sucks because it sounds like nothing they have ever done before, well you are just dead wrong and don't know Judas Priest. I don't care if you have all the albums because they have done you no good because it is obvious you haven't "listened" to them.

Someone said it above, it is just unheard of for a rock/metal band to sale a million records today, unless your Nicklelback, which sales to teeny boppers. I just cant beleive the new Priest only sold 42,000 copies, while bands like Disturbed sold something like 280,000 the first week. No disrespect to either band, but seriously, the latest Disturbed sounds just like there first three records, and I'm not bashing them, I own all four. Curious to see what the new Motley record does the first week.

Yes, the numbers are lower than AOR. But, that indicates how CD sales have declined across the board. All the artists have to compete in the same environment, so this highest chart number is a legitimate accomplishment. They should be proud of themselves to pull this off at this point in thier career.
Personally, I enjoy this album greatly. The only song I don't particulary care for is "New Beginnings". But, I don't have to skip past it.

Well congrats to the high chart entry.. But I bet the caramel isn't all that sweet considering they most likely sold less cd's than any releases up until Painkiller chart position or not.
You just have to look at their latest figures to do the math. Their previous cd sold 16.000 (!!!) more but "only" reached #13. I bet back in the day their cd's shifted 10 times more records first week chart position or not.
Sad.
Maybe next album will top 10, but probably sell...15-20.000 copies first week.

Is it just me, or are more and more people coming around for this album?
Last week when it came out there were far more haters posting about how much Nostradamus was a snooze fest. However, I'm starting to notice more and more positive things said about this album.
I've listened to it lots of times, and it still hasn't peaked with me...but I still think its a very awesome and diverse album.
Nostradamus is an essential album that Judas Priest absolutely needed to insert into their catalog.
Now of course...this begs the question: Do you guys think Keith would have eventually come around for Nostradamus?

Hmm, very good question. Hard to say. I personally liked his defense of his review on the Classic Metal Show. I didn't buy the album, I downloaded it but almost bought it. If subsequent listens yield better results I'll buy it definitely.
I thought the main problems were the lack of distinct riffs. Its like they took leftover filler songs they didn't put on AOR and put keyboardss and all sorts of other shit on them. No good riffs or catchy musical motifs make a dull album.
I'll give an example- the beginning of Mindcrime. Anarchy X- it repeats at the end and is IMMEDIATELY identifiable. Also riffs like the Suite Sister Mary main verse riff or the beginning riff. Playing some slow thing in e minor doesn't make it the same type of thing for Priest. It just seems so anonymous, lack of something distinct.
I'll give it a few more tries, but so far no dice. I liked AOR, didn't love it. I like the first Fight and the two HAlford albums 10000 times more than the last three or four Priest. AOR was calculated, but it was catchy.
