"Dead Again" couldn't be a more ironic title for the sixth studio effort from TYPE O NEGATIVE. One of the most original metal bands of the last 16 years is back with perhaps its finest outing since its 1993 breakthrough, "Bloody Kisses", displaying a newfound energy and heaviness that touches on elements of all its previous releases, even going all the way back to the tortured, labyrinthine brutality of its debut, "Slow, Deep and Hard".

Although both 1999's "World Coming Down" and 2002's "Life is Killing Me" had their moments, there was a sense that this Brooklyn-based quartet was running in place, regurgitating its sound in increasingly unenthusiastic fashion. As the press surrounding the new album notes, it took some major upheavals in the life of frontman and creative wellspring Peter Steele — the death of his beloved mother and other close family members, as well as his own flirtation with darkness in the form of an extended cocaine addiction and rehab process — to refocus and re-energize the imposing bassist/singer. As Steele goes, so goes TYPE O NEGATIVE, with keyboardist/producer Josh Silver, guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly all responding in kind.

The album's opening sets the pace right away. The title track piledrives right out of the speakers, yet is tempered with the melodic, psychedelic touches that are as much as part of the TON catalog as its most crushingly heavy, atonal moments. But "Dead Again" is flattened in the wake of "Tripping a Blind Man", which launches on a thrash metal tempo straight out of the Eighties before slowing into a more doom-laden dirge for the second half.

The band's distinctive mix of razor-edged guitars, rumbling bass and Silver's haunting cathedral keyboards is amply enhanced by a larger palette of sounds than usual, especially from Silver himself, who employs a wide range of synthesized sounds. The use of live drumming for the first time on a TON album (all the drums were sampled on previous recordings) adds a feeling of immediacy that wasn't always there in the past. Pity that the album's mix is muddier than usual, even for the typically sludgy wall of sound that TON creates. The sheer tonnage (so to speak) of the album puts it head and shoulders above so many brittle-sounding records that come out today, but the near-distortion and murk of some of the album can be a strain on the ear.

That doesn't prevent the disc from reaching epic status in the TON discography. "September Sun", perhaps the song most directly affected by the loss of Steele's mother, begins with a gentle piano and builds to a massive finale, all the while maintaining an atmosphere of loss amid its sonic interplay of thick slabs of guitars and stark melodic moments. "These Three Things" is the album's centerpiece, a 14-minute, multi-section journey through numerous tempos, with Hickey's restless, inventive guitar jousting back and forth with Silver's keyboard flourishes. Above it all is Steele's unmistakable voice, which soars from a menacing Gothic growl to an anguished cry sometimes within the same verse.

"Dead Again" is a long, long album, and TON remains an acquired taste for some, but this is the work of a band pushing itself to be the best it can be. As heavy and original as anything TON has ever done before, yet bursting with newfound energy, "Dead Again" is nothing less than the sound of a band that's been reborn.

I had to wait to listen to this cd by buying it the day it came out! no non voice over leak was to be found online. i think that's a first for any releases I've obtained in several years.

I was going to buy it anyways. have done so since October Rust.

"(all the drums were sampled on previous recordings)"

Fucking wrong. The first two album used live drums.

And "September Sun" sounds more like an ode to "Mystery Girl X" who's had a prominent place in Steele's writing since October Rust (hence the title "September Sun" and the use of the lyrics "ten years amassed" (also mentioned in interviews and the song "The Dream Is Dead") and "did it give you pleasure to steal my soul?".

This album IS fucking amazing and DOES have an energy and aggression not present since Bloody Kisses and in some ways their debut.

But Don Kaye is still our misfortune.

This one deserves a 10 among a discography full of 10s.

I was a huge fan for Bloody Kisses and October Rust.
World and Life were pretty good.
The only thing on this release that turns me off is his yell/power vocals.Lots of different cool stuff to listen to on here but gets jumbly. The faster music comes off kinda punkish/corny.
I like the slow/dark/doom stuff from them the most.

Love the new album, I think it's equal parts Bloody Kisses and World Coming Down. I also listened to it 3 times in row after I bought it and all I can say is WOW! TON is one of my favorite bands to see live and this new album will translate to the live stage perfectly. Peter and Kenny's vox are fucking great and the music is blended in perfectly. And if Down and Phil can't keep their shit together, here's to Seventh Void taking their place as the next ruthless side band. The songs on their myspace page bring you back to the days of Sabbath.

After all the turmoil this band's been through how could anyone expect Type O Negative to top the crème of the crop - Bloody Kisses, October Rust or World Coming Down?
They are slightly beaten’ up by life, and are a little worn out as people, understandably so.

The new album merely brushes past their former glories, but is solid enough to have some cool little moments here and there. The production does let it down. Many gray areas there notably. Life Is Killing Me wasn’t that great either in the production department, but at least it had that “organic” feel.
Dead Again sounds too clinical.
It’s got that “room” sound, and the studio just wasn’t that great?
I don’t want to nitpick many tiny flaws throughout the album, just wish the production decisions were made differently for their own benefit.
I miss the atmosphere and the vocal production the most.

Personally, I just wish Type O Negative to keep it together and have some closure in their lives. The band’s priority #1 should be their health.

After all is said and done, Dead Again is a decent album.

8/10

The riffing is mediocre, there are no good segues from one riff to another, they just randomly change abruptly and stupidly, the lyrics are HORRIBLE the arrangements are atrocious and the production is ABSOLUTE SHIT.

I'm sitting here listening to Bloody Kisses to cleanse myself of the shit that was "Dead Again". This is a great record with solid writing, Peter Steele using a vocal range he could sing in and sound cool, lyrics aren't totally awkward and stupid.. wow, a good record. Worth of an 8.4 or 9 from fans and reviewers.. Dead Again is an absolutely crap record that deserves none of the praise that's being lauded upon it.

My amazon review...

It's no coincidence that Type O Negative have released their best album following their departure from Roadrunner Records. They don't have to rely on writing a single or a radio hit for the label to deem them a success. Gone are the sugar coated pop goth metal tracks of their previous three releases and in their place are massively produced lumbering doom anthems.

The first thing that strikes you with this album is just how heavy it is without it actually being extreme metal. Type O have managed to combine the cinematic happiness of Devin Townsend, the low tunings of Torche and Cathedral and the good time riffage of Queens Of The Stone Age.

'September Sun' does exactly what it says on the tin. It is dark like September but sunny like August. Old school Hammond Organ weaves between crushing Doom riffs and is peppered with Emperor style horn bursts, but it never stops being happy... yes, this is a happy Type O Album.

The fourteen minute 'These Three Things' comes off like Iron Monkey playing Polyphonic Spree songs. There simply isn't a weak song on the album. From the Danzig esque punk metal of 'Halloween in Heaven' to the stoner sludge of 'An Ode to Locksmiths' this really is the first true essential album of the year.

If you think that this band produced "sugar coated pop goth metal" on their previous albums you are not a fan of this group and have no business reviewing this album! Period.
In short - your review is pretty much useless.
In conclusion - if I'm not mistaken, the first two albums before Bloody Kisses were also released by Roadrunner, and those were the least commercially appealing volumes in the Type O Negative's catalogue. So... there goes the entire point of your so-called "review."
Have a good day.

The very fact that you've laid into my review amuses me. I am quite quite aware of the fact that their first two albums were released by roadrunner, and the fact that they were their least commercially accessible, which was the whole point I was trying to make. This album is more of a successor to their earlier stuff then the last three albums. Its painstakingly obvious. Why do you people care so much ? Write a better review then. No skin off of my nose.

Well... I actually made a constructive under run of your "review" - no use for you to try back-pedaling now. It's obvious you were slamming the label as if it was responsible for the commercially appealing sound the band was churning out now and then.
The fact is - Type O Negative were always doing what they wanted 100% regardless of what anybody thought.
That's their whole point. If you can't see that - don't even try to pass off as a fan of this band.
Now - on Dead Again there is enough commercially suitable tidbits no less obvious than on any of their previous albums - example - "September Sun" and "Halloween In Heaven"... so what's the point of your "review?" - it's got no merit.

And it's my opinion that you have no business slamming this band at all. Your cheap shot at an insult towards Type O Negative with "the sugar coated pop goth metal tracks of their previous three releases" expression has 'caught my eye.'

It won't surprise me to find out that you discovered this group recently and are jumping on a bandwagon. Which in itself isn’t bad, but you have no business discussing this group's back catalogue as you've clearly misunderstand the whole concept of Type O Negative.

Be man enough to admit your mistake & take back your hasty and uncalled for "the sugar coated pop goth metal tracks of their previous three releases" and there's no issue. If not - well, you already know my opinion about you and your "review."

Later.

I finally got to hear this yesterday. I like TON, probably moderately and don't consider myself a huge fan. Good band, some good stuff in the past and based on the reviews -- I was thinking they have knocked this one out the park. After reading this quote:

"The first thing that strikes you with this album is just how heavy it is without it actually being extreme metal. Type O have managed to combine the cinematic happiness of Devin Townsend, the low tunings of Torche and Cathedral and the good time riffage of Queens Of The Stone Age."

Cathedral? Extremely heavy? What the fuck? Are we listening to the same thing? QOTSA? That is about the most cliche' ridden throwing around names of bands, and inaccurate review I've ever read.

Album of the year? Not quite so fast. Is this a bad record -- absolutely not, it is a pretty good record. Not the best of the year by any means. In fact, my first impression of The Profits of Doom was that of a popular NY based hardcore/metal/rap band. There are some nice heavier moments, but this is not "so heavy or doomy that its hard to believe its not extreme", no its heavy but more in a hard rock, regular metal, almost punk vibe at times.

If you are looking for album of the year, get the new Hidden Hand -- that is the riffage, heaviness, and doomy progressivness that you are craving for.

But DO buy this TON album. You should like it if you like their previous work. Its good but don't expect the greatest slab of metal ever.

Well I guess you haven't listened to the last two Cathedral records. If you were to listen to 'Profits Of Doom' against something like 'Sea Serpent' from Cathedral's Endtyme then you can see where Type O may have gained some influence in their song structures. I am also fully aware of the fact that Type O and Cathedral started around about the same time and if anything, have probably drawn influence from each other. My reference to Devin Townsend was purely in the production sense. Dead Again is a very large sounding album with quite complex layers and multitracking, much like Devin Townsend's work. Again, my reasoning for mentioning QOTSA and Torche within my review is not in the sense that TON have gained any influence in their work, however, more in a stylistic sense. Even though Dead Again is a profoundly dark album in a lyrical sense the overall feeling that one can gain from it is a feeling of positivity in their sound, as you would also gain from listening to QOTSA and Torche.

I like it.

Hey man, I won't argue with you (and I know your not arguing), but I can see you are a bigger TON fan than I am. Cool.

In reading your review again, I'll give you a few props -- I see the good time riffing of QOTSA, actually, yeah a few of the songs I do see that. And those are the songs that have that little more "punky" feel to them.

I just don't feel this album is really all that heavy though. I don't say that as an extreme metal punk kid either. I am older and usually fall in to a fan of classic metal, classic rock, stoner rock. doom, and sludge. Type O fits into some of that at times of course. I have heard the last two Catherdal records (in fact, I own most of the Catherdral catalogue), I don't know, that is more of a stretch for me. I can see where you might draw your comparison at times, but I don't think its really influence. The doomy side seems more forced than the more up tempo or regular paced stuff which seem really natural.

Profits of Doom sounds more like a nod to BioHazard than Cathedral to me and is my least favorite of all the songs. Dead Again, wow -- that is a cool song, I like it and has that punk feel to it. These Three Things, another really nice song and sounds like nobody else out there with some nice riffing and a really good guitar tone, best and LONG song on the record. September Sun, another good and totally TON song. Halloween in Heaven, I just get Misfits stuck in my head (I know, I know). There is a bit of their trademark dark humor on the record that keeps it from being overly dark, which I do enjoy. Damn it, not I have to go and buy it!

Best since WCD id say. I like how these guys can write songs that are 10-15 minutes in length, yet they do not at any point bore the listener, because of how the song is broken down into 3-4 different sections. Regardless of the band's personal beliefs, they sound very inspired on this one; It just has a certain feeling of energy that i felt was lacking on LIKM.

RichardBridge...I agree with your last post. To waste time comparing it to old material is to miss out on what's right in front of you....new Type O! This new CD is different for sure, but that's the beauty of it.

Now, about Peter finding his Catholic roots again...if you notice, he is very tongue-in-cheek about it (of course). He knows full well that "finding god" is somewhat of a joke, but I think he was at the end of his rope with the drugs, death of his parents, etc. and needed some positive direction, which he equated to religion. He refers to the Lord as Lured in The Profits of Doom; therefore, for all of you that view Peter's new-found hobby as disappointing, I wouldn't take his "conversion" too seriously because it's obvious he doesn't.

I completely agree with your last (proper) post. Thanks for pointing out the 'lured' lyric. I suspect you might be right about Pete not taking it too seriously. I do honestly believe he is Catholic, but he's the kind of guys who's sceptical about everything, even himself. (if anything, mostly himself....) So, that's a cool thing you've pointed out to me. In fact, in the recent Decibel interview, he seemed more interested in the walk to church than church itself!!! I guess that was pretty much the only way out of insanity for a guy that had obviously reached the end of his rope. I'm just really fucking glad he pulled himself out and we now have a new Type O Negative album and tour. That's what counts.

'Dark Lord of the Sith 666', I agree with you about abortion. I am 100% in favour of it. It really is the only solution for some people. So I do see where you're coming from about those lyrics.

It is certainly much more happier ,and less "scary" than the previous ones but if one gets past that ,the music is absolutely fucking great! Its like a wacky cartoon ride into all their influences from the 70's , from TON's duper-heavy perspective!

I think their sound is much more well-defined than on their previous two records and their influences really shine. I can't think of anyone else that matches their sound and Peter Steele really outdoes himself.
Love the solos from Kenny as well; the guitar and keyboard solos on 'September Sun' are a nice contrast and this may be their most beautiful ( yes, beautiful) song yet.

I gotta say, that I have this album in the cd player there about 30% of the time, and the workplace response has been great compared to OR, BK, or even WCD. Not they're best release, but pretty damn good. This is an album to bring along if you know your going to meet someone whos never heard them before. This album lands in the top 20 of what I own.

That is one of the reasons possibly why I've grown to love this album so much. 'October Rust' has always been my favorite TON album and is perfect for any season of the year. That album is in my top 10 albums of time.....right up there with albums like:
Realm- Endless War
Metallica- Master of Puppets
Metallica- Ride The Lightning
Iron Maiden- Powerslave
and other great albums that I love.

This album is different from all their other albums and to me its in a good way. I've seen them 3 times in the past 2 years (one time in October so that was pretty cool). Can't wait for the next record.
