An extreme right-wing theocratic dictatorship has taken over the U.S. and is waging war against the Middle East, while trying to keep the populace drugged by poisoning its drinking water. The environment and society is collapsing, civil liberties are no more, and Christian military police raid people's private homes and ban "subversive" entertainment at will. Sound familiar?

OK, maybe not quite, but we've still got 15 years to go. That's how far in the future Trent Reznor has set his brilliant new NINE INCH NAILS album, "Year Zero", a conceptual project about a near-future world that's on the edge of political, social and ecological apocalypse. And don't forget the "Presence", a vision of what looks like a giant hand that appears out of the sky to the denizens of this frightening future world and is either a mass hallucination or…something else.

Reznor, who wrote and performed the entire album by himself, doesn't spell out every single detail of his storyline in the record's 16 tracks (much more of it can be found at the various web sites that have been put up as part of a genius marketing campaign to tie in with the album's release, which paint a truly disturbing portrait of a world gone badly wrong). But he gives just enough lyrically and musically to create a piece of work that is his most unified, mature and atmospheric to date. "Year Zero" even becomes moving in its final moments, a huge step forward for an artist whose often mechanized music has traded mostly in rage and self-pity, but not enough in a true sense of loss.

Loss is what "Year Zero" is about: the loss of our humanity, the loss of our minds, the loss of our lives as we know them. Reznor is clearly infuriated and alarmed at the state of the world and the U.S. today, especially since America is currently led by a delusional, tyrannical liar and war criminal who thinks he gets his orders directly from God. But the bigger picture of his storyline also encompasses what has been done to the planet itself, and the apathy that seems to have infected society at large (where the identity of Anna Nicole Smith's baby daddy is bigger news than how many people were killed in Iraq that day). Like where Reznor's coming from or not, but he's made an album that's about something, with a point of view about the human race and an unflattering one at that.

All of this is related in the context of some of Reznor's catchiest, yet most haunting and jagged music yet. More electronic in nature than 2005's "With Teeth" (which featured live drums from Dave Grohl on a number of tracks, as opposed to the many sampled beats here), "Year Zero" also feels raw at the same time and not as packed with the kind of wall-of-sound layering that makes many of his contemporaries' record either headache-inducing or just inaccessible. "Hyperpower!" begins the record with a frantic, metalized march, going straight into the midtempo rock of "The Beginning of the End" and the faster-paced fibrillation of "Survivalism". The album keeps up the aggressive pace for much of its first half on songs like the swaggering "Capital G" (written from the point of view of every Rush Limbaugh-loving moron out there) before going to a quieter, more melancholy and eerier place on "The Great Destroyer" and "Zero-Sum".

"May God have mercy on our dirty little hearts," sings Reznor at the end, and much of "Year Zero" sounds like the effort of a solitary person in a dark, remote room, mourning a world spiraling quickly downward to death.

If you're looking for a metal record here, or even a heavy slab of industrial music, you might as well look elsewhere. But if you want an immersive, encompassing musical experience, "Year Zero" lives up to those ambitions. Let's just hope the world Reznor has conjured up stays securely within his mind.

I wonder if Don Kaye really thought so highly of the album's musical merits or if he wrote his review while masturbating because the album's concept aligns with his political views. Seriously, of all the music reviews I read, I don't know any critic other than Kaye who manages to bitch about the president in every single review. Its uncanny. If he has such an axe to grind he should leave BMouth and become a writer for the Daily Show...

well hyperpower is an intro and some tracks are that kind of short filler, filler as in sound that does not equal a song, not filler as in SHIT like on most albums.

this really, really is a great album. I grew very tired of the surge in Bush hating (although I do hate me some current president), but this seemed to me like at least some kind of attempt at making that genre more original and creative.

The songs are much more electronic and I dig them very much! I enjoyed With Teeth, but this one absolutely kills.

It's not Metal at all, but yes, it kills.

damn i was hoping this review would talk about the actual music. we know about the concept, it isn't that hard to grasp. probably the lamest "music" review ever. this guy must get a major hard on when he reads 1984 and the like.

the disc is 60+ minutes long so don't worry about the songs being too short.

listened to the first few tracks and i liked what i heard. tomorrow ill be able to listen to it completely with headphones (the best way for NIN).

NIN always like to change and twist things up a bit... This cd is definitely one of the best he has done... You have to listen to it a couple of times first to really find that grove but once you do, youll be hooked... it is technoish but i wouldnt say thats a bad thing at all.. Thats the direction music has been kind of heading. Radiohead and thom Yorke solo cd are the perfect example...ANd they are excellent as well... But NIN has always incorporated techno in their sound so its really nothing to suprising... After a few listens it sounds like the perfect and logical step for NIN....
I think its going to be remembered for years to come and it does sound amazing... The lyrics are also as great as usual.... The cd really is atmospheric and does give you the feeling that the world is ending..... This cd is a little hard to describe in actual detail besides saying broad things like it has tecnho but I think Trent says it best saying that you can F*ck to it and that he messed around with blips an d beeps from his labtop.... But it turns to out to be so much more.... Listen to it and you ll see.....
Also Survivalism doesnt do this cd justice as first single

Bought it today and listened to it a few times, and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a lot of electronics in this one, similar to PHM, so I was pleased to hear it return in an overabundance. Lots of songs that really hook you. My favorite is "The Good Soldier", "Capital G", "The Greater Good", and "In This Twilight". But I didn't like how close "My Violent Heart" and "God Given" sounded. My only gripe.

Overall, very strong. 8.5/10.

This isn't much different to me than Moby. There are some neat sounds throughout this disc but I find it to be a sleeper. 50% of this sounds like first take recordings and fillers.I only liked 2 songs and thats all it gets is a 2. In my opinion he is the p diddy of industrial music sample crap.

I agree that this is not a metal album but it is indeed my fav since The Downward Spiral. This one owes more to Pretty Hate Machine though and what he has created here is great musical atmosphere. Most here will hate it and I am actually quite surprised at so much praise off the bat. Really a great record but I know the backlash will be coming shortly. I am excited to hear part two as this is only one of a two album concept peice. This gets an 8 from me. 9 and 10 are for classic albums and genre defining albums. This has yet to make that much of an impact, just a solid peice of great music.

Survivalism is a great track definatly an obvious single. If its the only song you have heard though dont judge the rest of the album based on this one track. The music on here is a total progression from with teeth. Trent has really stepped up since he went clean. Even if you dont care about the concept the music still delivers. You have to listen to the album as a whole, its hard for me anyway to find one good track. Just have to mention that from seeing his last tour then seeing Beside You in Time the way the band presents all of his music is the best its been in years. Maybe the best they have ever sounded live. Cant wait to see this stuff live!

you said:
"Why does everyone stroke this guys ego?All Trent does is make noise with his computer/keyboard.I listened to this a few times through and it all sounds the same to me and even a less of an effort overall. This isn't much different to me than Moby."

well, first, not everyone likes him. i used to hate NIN because all i fucking heard was "Head Like A Hole" on TV and the radio and it bugged me. then, one year, i heard other songs and began to think differently. he actually captures some very raw emotions, and not just anger and hate.

second, if you think that all this music is merely hitting a few keys on your keyboard, why don't you just hit the same keys and become an industrial/rock hero yourself? it's not that easy. programming keys, you still have to write the melody and rhythm. and programming beats (as opposed to sampling) you still have to "write" the beat. no button on the keyboard just gives you the beat.

thirdly, if you think NIN sounds like Moby, well that shows that you can't discern what are very noticeable differences between those two types of (largely but not totally) electronic music. Moby, at least his big "Play" album (i know he's done punkier things but i haven't heard them and i bet Ohio hasn't) is almost diametrically opposed to the violent energy, anger, bitterness, and hurt in NIN.

i'm not asking you to listen to them or like NIN, but there's a real depth there that millions of fans have found and enjoy.

to say that electronic music sounds the same, well that's a charge that non-metal fans use to describe metal. and since you're on this site, i assume you love metal. hell, some metal fans say more extreme subgenres, like death metal, all sounds the same. to an unexperienced listener perhaps there's truth there. but not to an experienced lover of the genre.

i'm not gonna slam you and resort to juvenile name calling; i'm just saying there's more going on with NIN than you're hearing.

cheers.

p.s. i have yet to get this new one and would regardless, but reading the user reviews, i'm stoked. and the lyrics sound like a really cool dystopian sci-fi novel.

Ok, i'm one of those die hard NIN fans that has almost all the halos and i definatly say this is if not my fave then it's a close tie, but i also don't hate or even dislike any album (I said album not halo cus i admit some of them are weird or jus not worth the money unless your a colector) i love all NIN albums, Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, The Downward Spiral, The Fragile, With_Teeth, & Now Year-Zero. Trent Is A Creative Genius, sure maybe he's expressing some political veiws but fuck, who cares, if it sounds good thats whut matters. An this new NIN cd, Year Zero is fuckin amazing, it's catchy, heavy with out heavy guitars, dancie in an electornic/industrial/clubish kinda way, and the lyrics have a point, to me trent jus keeps surpriseing me, With_Teeth was a major surprise. I loved the album, seen the tour, bought the shirt, got the vinyl, but i'll admit, it was not whut i was expecting, and neither was this cd. Even after the leaks I found online of Me I'm Not (good song), Survivalism (great 1st single), My Violent Heart (an ok but not in my top favs of the album), The Begining Of The End (nice groovie rockish style like the With_Teeth album) and then In This Twilight (jus super amazing) this cd still blew my mind when i went and bought it (especially when i found out the disc changes color after u play it in ur stereo then it changes back, WOOO) and heard all the other tracks on it, like The Warning, God Given, Capitol G, Meet Your Maker, The Good Solider, & The best track on the album The Great Destroyer. You wanna talk about fuckin "solos" in songs, theres a 2 miniute fuckin digital/synth/key board crazy assed effect solo thats more crazy n creative then most super crazy guitar solos (which are all startin to sound the same, scales, melody, sweeps, and some crazy pickin with hammer ons) but don't get me wrong, i'm a bassit/guitarist and i love solos but The Great Destroyer's Digi-Solo is one of the most craziest solos on any musical instrument i'v heard. & yes u dredged assholes syntrhs, and all those digital things are instruments, a musical instrument is a tool used to make music, yes EVEN COMPUTERIZED TOOLS!!!! Theres jus a differance between over dueing, or not haveing talent, but have you seen or heard some of the digital acts out there? Some of them arte way more intense then some metal bands, it's all in the attitude, emotion, sound, and over all style that the songs put out, i admit industrial/electronic music is'nt every ones taste but if u don't like the cd why comment? Should'nt you of hated it enought to see the cover and say "Hey, i don't like nin, so i'm not clickin that" but all in all folks, if you want a cd thats not like anything else out there and you want something new pick Year-Zero up, & if your an NIN fan then you must get it. And for my leaving note, Trent Makes Great Music, Love it or hate it it's wonderfull, and if you have'nt heard it, then fuck everyone else and give it a listen, it's creative, differant, out there, catchy, bouncie, emotional, driven, aggresive, melodic and most importantly very well put together.

Mr. Reznor has it just right with Year 0; screaching hellish electronic noise coupled with pulsating beats and ear piercing disonant guitars. DO NOT COMMENT ON THIS ALBUM. Okay, lets put all the shit talking to rest. Trent Reznor released Pretty Hate Machine in 1989, thats almost two decades ago. I bet you half of the people that have commented on this album are barely two decades old themselves. The truth is simple, NIN's have survived through the grunge, brit-rock, the nu-metal, and today's generation of metal so-called "saviors". One word: Respect. How many bands can release an album almost every 3-5 years and still go platinum and earn excellent critiical reviews? Answer: not many.
Trent Reznor is an musical icon in pop-culture. Yes, NIN's are not metal, but what are they then? It doesn't really matter what they are because they are a band that is recognized all over the world for their music. Nuff said about that.
Now back to Year Zero. This album definitely succeeds over 2005's With Teeth. Not because With Teeth sucked but because this new album definitely redefines NIN's music. This album shows glimpses of all the history of this band. All of Reznor's prior works seem to be summarized in Year Zero. It does not repeat any of the classic work but it adds an innovative spin on the songs that allow NIN's to keep pushing into the next generation. In conclusion, Year Zero will be plenty of food for the die-hard NIN's fans but will leave people who barely know about them posting misleading, retarded comments, that unfortunately are most of what I have read on this posting today. For those who truly love music give this album a try because it is a total opposite of the bland, repetitive music that our generation is now faced with on a daily basis.

By the way, the description of the album's concept make it sounds like something completely unoriginal. Anyway, I am gonna give this a try, although I'm not a NIN fan.

There are live drums, Capital G has like saxophone players, a trumpet and trombone player. Trent has always had some other bit players on his albums.

As for the album, it sounds like NIN and you either like them at this point or you don't. Nothing groundbreaking because it sounds like NIN. If you are a fan I don't think he can write a truly crappy record. Capital G is the best NIN song in a long time.

While Downward Spiral will go down in history as one of the greatest rock records ever produced, this album will probably go down in history as one of the greatest protest albums ever produced. It's as much a masterpiece as Downward Spiral was, but for different reasons. It's stunning that, with our society collapsing under the weight of our maniacal and tremendously misguided leaders, there isn't more protest music being put out. This is top notch song-craftsmanship, brilliant use of harmonic and dissonant sounds, and startlingly put together with a cohesive and frighteningly good storyline. I honestly believe this album rises above any criticism. Flawless.

Is Blabbermouth political or musical? Writing an entire review about politics doesn't make you smart. As a matter of fact, it makes you look pretty ridiculous. Where's the discussion about music again? Oh yeah, one lonesome paragraph scattered between hackneyed musings of anti-everything.

Do your job. Leave your political opinions to those who're payed for them.

After "With teeth" which I really liked, I was very skeptical about this new album, but fortunately it's another work of art! Different, that's for sure, but the songs are awesome and that's what matters.
Still making great music while evolving artistically at the same time...that's very rare to find.
Saw them live in the first dates of the European tour and they totally rocked the place. Looking forward to see them again this year.

Anyone who bashes this album doesn't know jack shit about music. Stop complaining and shut the fuck up because absolutely no one cares about your opinion. Music is subjective so saying something like: "NIN sucks and always have" just makes you look like a complete tool. Go fuck yourself. Anyways, this album kicks ass. Great band, Im not necessarily an experienced listener seeing as when the downward spiral came out i was maybe 5 but once I got With_Teeth I found they were a truly amazing band.

If you've ever read the book 1984, or given a listen to Fear Factory's album Obsolete, you'll quickly see this is a rehashing of an old idea with different beats. I love NIN, don't get me wrong, but And All That Could Have Been... should have been Trent's last album. Out paced by the industrial world (i.e Funker Vogt, Wumpscut, Panzer Division) and lyrically bested by those in the EBM and Metal crowds (VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, Rammstein), the only thing Trent had left was the name. I'll check it out, maybe find something good about it, but like a lot of one man bands, this one's about played out.

Dictator? - Guess none of us have the right to vote anymore. Sorry... I never got that memo. And please let me know which of your civil liberties have been robbed from you. As for our soldiers going to war over religious furor. I guess the enemy's use of 'jihad' isn't a religious furor.... only our response is. And if tough talk towards those nations who wish to eradicate the Great Satan of the west along with Israel is too much for you to handle, then go and appease the REAL dictators of the world and see how far you get. Remember.... no one wanted to get into WWII either and FDR and Churchill were both considered to be 'war mongers.' Now... if you check the Geneva convention's rules of engagement, etc. you would know that our soldiers have their hands tied more than ever. Contrary to your wishes and hopes, our men and women are NOT the baby killers and rapers you so badly wish that they were. As for Gitmo.... if you want torture, just remember the fond days of the Hanoi Hilton. THAT was torture. Forcing someone to stay awake a little longer than usual is akin to feeding them gourmet meals. Oh wait.... WE DO THAT THERE! And as for scandals.... every administration has them. And what's funniest is that Clinton got away with things 20 times worse than anyone in the current administration did and got a slap on the wrist at best. Attorney firings anyone?? Clinton cleaned house because he wanted "team players." That's 93 in total. Gonzales fires 9 and gets publicly lynched.

I don't like GWB because he is a liberal... plain and simple.

I am a frequent reader of B’mouth and rarely post. In fact, this is my first post on an album review thread, even discouraging myself from giving Type O Negative’s latest the usual high score. That said, I think the reviewer summed it up very nicely (contrary to naysayers in the peanut gallery), especially opining that this may be the most “unified, mature and atmospheric release to date.” I thought the same thing as I followed the storyline in the lyrics during the maiden headphone voyage.

The most striking thing to me about Year Zero is the effective usage of the electro-nuances (very similar to the Downward Spiral), stemming from the backbone of sampled drumbeats to the layered keyboard melodies and quirks – something that has always attracted me to the NIN sound and something absent from the previous release (though I will always love the guitar overdrive in Broken, et al).

I won’t comment too much on the illustrative quality of the music vis-à-vis the storyline contained in the lyrics, but to take the reviewer’s opinion a step further in that this album centers around the theme of loss, it is the faint sprinkle of hope -- illustrated in the contrasting elegance of the piano -- that stands out and blows me away. I’m not sure if the piano was purposely utilized for this effect or not, but it is the fleeting moment of peaceful ambience at the end that gives one the realization that in the midst of chaos, there is always an element of beauty just beyond the limits of monotonous daily life, let alone dystopian nightmares narrated throughout the album.

Bottom line – Year Zero is a masterpiece that could surely end up as my favorite NIN album (and maybe yours too)…for the time being. Many may try to disagree, and that’s fine – I’ll still raise my glass to you anyways; I assure you it is my favorite NIN opus for the time being. Speaking of which, I will now return to imbibing some less than optimal quality spirits….

At this point, there is nothing remotely original or radical about hating Bush. I'm a soldier in the Army, and I just got back from a 13 month deployment, and all I hear about is these artists bitching about shit!!! Very good album. I liken it to The Fragile (which is my personal favorite NIN album). Listening to this album helps make sense of why With Teeth was pretty subpar. With Teeth seems to come off as more of a transitional album between The Fragile and Year Zero, where it's a change in the band's sound but maybe not the smoothest change. The music on this album is great, yet diverse. You have harder numbers and you have more laid back tracks. It goes well with the story being presented and if you have read any of the websites involving the concept of this album, it becomes a very involved experience.

Production is awesome, lyrics are awesome, music is awesome, and I think this is one of those few records where the concept actually fits in with the music and the music does a good job of presenting the concept (something I feel that most concept records do a poor job of).

Now I am not saying that this album is without it's problems (namely some sameness in song structures at some points), but whatever the faults, Year Zero just may be the album of the year (for me) and I would suggest that everyone should check this album out.

simply off the charts with perfection. excited for the follow up!

Year Zero is a greatly structured allbum. Diverse; no two songs sound just the same. And Well produced; static and synths never sounded so good.
