This is a great new offering for the mighty Megadeth. Fans should be pleased to hear some classic Megadeth riffing and the album shines on tracks tracks like Washington Is Next, Sleepwalker, United Abpominations & Gears Of War. More importantly, the anger seething from Mustaine's politically fuelled lyrics just screams classic 'Deth, as do the new and improved lineup. Definitely one for the droogs.

The album has some highlights – but its average at best. After listening to the last few deth’ albums, I wouldn’t call them thrash anymore – its heavy metal now. I personally don’t think any of the top 4 can release thrash albums any more – now don’t get me wrong; I believe progression is good but only if done right. Bands like Testament can still belt out some great tunes and I cant wait for the new album. But, its unknown bands like Violator, Fueled By Fire (actually any true thrash from Brazil and South America – they’re stuff is incredible) that are keeping pure thrash metal alive.
United Abominations – 7/10

Don Kaye made a decent review, wow, i actually share with Kaye some points, boy that was come scary shit.
Anyways, 7.5 is not the fair rating, more like 8.5, cause the brutal ending of "Burnt Ice". Overall an god damn album with some flops.

I don't know why Don Kaye can't understand what Dave is saying. Just because the albums lyrics aren't 100% anti-U.S. doesn't mean its impossible to figure the tunes out.
I hope the "war" ends for many reasons, and one strange one happens to be the glut of half-baked "political" albums its generated. Check out the review for the new Pro-Pain album--that's like, the 3rd fucking album they've devoted to that topic. Whatever happened to artistic inspiration? I guess nowadays people are content with watching CNN and writing songs about whatever they see.
Oh--back to the start--its a good CD. 8/10.

i will check out your recos of Violater and Fuled By Fire (cool name).
as an old-school thrash fan (since 83) i haven't listened to Testatment in years, but a recent investigation into reviews make me wanna check out their newer stuff too.
and i'm stoked to hear the new Exodus with Hunting back.

Didnt he keep raving about a cover song on this cd??? where is it? anyway I pre ordered and they emailed me another track which is pretty cool. Love thalbum solid 8.5 to me...fav track is the title track. I dont see what the issues are with understanding the lyrics, he isnt completely pro US he is anti UN for being useless, and not standing up for what they say they do. although the amerkistan song is classic if you listen it is showing how much alike both parties are and how their faults and pros are one the same.

nobody can ever tell Dave that he is full of shit. His political statements are those of a man who hasn't fucking clue BUT doesn't realize he hasn't a fucking clue. Basically, he's about as bright as the guy working athe local 7-11 but since he's had his ass kissed for a lo these many years, he actually thinks he's smart. I read some of his lyrics for this album and all I can say is Dave owes me a pair of britches because I shit myself laughing at his jingoistic bullshit. Fuck him, fuck idiocy, go back to the drugs Dave. The truth is in the drugs.

I am looking forward to hearing the album, and I hear what you say about Dave's lyrics, but the guy is in his forties, and as far as I am concerned has contributed a lot to the world of Metal for an entire generation and beyond. To many, including myself, at that time period in the early eighties he became a pioneer. I think, what the fuck, he can say what he wants. Its not where my main focus is on. I just want to hear what he plays on each record. I liked a lot of the songs that others didn't as well as all the classics-just the chance to hear a different expression. I think Dave is not trying to be the cutting edge, God alone knows he's been surpassed which is just as the way it should be. I think he should just stick to the music he makes to please himself and his fans. And sometimes, think before he opens his mouth and he might be able to grow in some respect and stature that might serve his legacy well for inspiring current and future genrations

there is nothing on this reacord that is really bad, but nother that is really good either. A pretty mediocre album all around that will probably not get any great album sales. Hopefully this album bombs so Dave gets Ellefson, Menza and Friedman back in the fold, and then they might have a possibility of making a GREAT metal record.

I have been a Megadeth fan since so far so good so what in '88. I'm glad beyond words that Mustaine is still around making music like this. No'one plays metal like Mustaine. The guitars sound crisp and the band sound fresh and energised. Mustaines Lyrics are far more political than any album since so far.... The system has failed was largely a personal album lyrically with the exception of blackmail the universe and kick the chair. (Those who say system was a political album have clearly looked at the cover and have not listened to it). Mustaines lyrics are always intelligent and interesting wether he is writing about a serial killer or the U.S. government. Contrary to the reviewers assertion i can find no conflict in any of the statements he makes here. These are complex issues. Mustaine has never dumbed down or simplified his views for his fans and this is why he is so respected by them. He criticises the U.N. for the inaction which lead to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. He is clearly a patriotic man but this does not mean he thinks America is a perfect Utopia that is beyond criticism. Musically this album seems to have two different sections. The first five songs are very immediate and catchy. The next five (excluding tout le monde which is an old song re-done) are more complex and require a few listens to get into. Personally I would have preffered the led zep cover he was gonna do than the new tout le monde but that's a small gripe. Love the first 5 tracks. Suspect the others will grow on me as there are very few Mustaine songs I don't like and most of em are on Risk and I even like four of the songs on that CD. Now that proves I'm a fan ! Nearly as bad as that guy above who said St. Anger was good. Not quite though.

I would probably give it 8.5 out of 10 overall, maybe 9 if I'm feeling generous. I voted for 10 here, but that was just to counter any douches who gave it a 1.
It's still growing on me, but it's pretty good. 'Never Walk Alone' is the standout track for me. I think Dave overdid it with the political stuff - 3 songs is pushing it. 2 is really the maximum I can handle. And it would have been nice to see more songs co-written by the Drovers, but I'm probably being picky now.

His own cover of "A Tout Le Monde" is pure mainstream crap and even if some tracks really stand above the average quality of the record, I can't say this album has anything special to deliver...
"Not every song is a winner" : I'd say only three songs are decent... The rest is not that bad but doesn't have the guts or power of his past work...

It's a great album,. You will find some new things from Megadeth in this record. 1- The sound of Dave is completely different in United Abomination Track. sound on this new record is great. 2- There are also great riffs and music in whole album. Washington is next is a return for Megadeth. United abomination is great. It's also good to hear ATLM as a duet .
I personally believe it's the best album after Youthanasia. even better than 2 last albums.
Dave is doing a good job. Well done Dave , I like it

maybe a little better than the last. And I liked the last a lot! This could have easily followed Countdown To Extinction and kept Megadeth and metal in general relevant durning that hard time in the 90's when metal went to Europe, leaving us with, well, I won't go there.
I give it an 8. I may up it to 9 when I hear the rest of it...I dig!

i was living my megadeth dream till i turned 18 years old. then they put out risk. cryptic writings was ok and i ate it with not many complaints even if half the songs were radio-hits, still decent melodies though and not so generic. risk destroyed everything. i suddenly understood than in those years 1996-2000 most of the metal bands had sold out just for the money that they loathed in half their lyrics... in that way my revolutionary dream-world was destroyed and i came to reality and saw the music as it was and not as an idea. and from risk till now it has turned from bad to worse. this is just a generic metal album with no soul at all. i would give it a 5, but just for ajusting the users-rating i'll give it a 1 instead.

Just 'cos you don't agree with those of us who have actually listened to the album from start to finish that it's great, I think just scoring it 1's to drop the overall rating is pretty weak minded. Far better than a lot of the shit getting released these days and we should all be showing some respect for that alone. Mega Dave and the band put in a great effort here and it shows in everything from the songwriting, to the playing, singing and even the packaging is pretty schmicky, so lay off ya morons. 9/10

Really solid, I think it is better than System Has Failed, but shares much in the same spirit. Loads of good songs, nice riffs & lyrics. But it doesn't really come as a definitive classic. Good album non-the-less, 8½ but I gave 9. Maybe bit too much, but it is better than 7.5.

The first two songs are outstanding, some songs are good, too many are not memorable. Good solos don't save a mediocre song from being just that.
I liked The System Has Failed better. With the exception of 'My Kingdom' all the songs (and interludes) worked for the most part and had to offer something special. You can't get wrong with Chris Poland and Vinnie Colaiuta in the studio.
The System Has Failed was easily an 8/10. 'Blackmail The Universe', Die Dead Enough', 'Kick The Chair' Tears In A Vial', 'Back In The Day', 'Of Mice And Men', 'Shadow Of Deth'; all very good. It was the best Megadeth output since Countdown To Extinction, much better than the last couple of Friedman/Menza era albums.
Plus the production on System was a bit more remarkable than the good but kinda slick and same-y sound Andy Sneap gave Megadeth on this new album. United Abominations falls a little bit short. Still good, but not great. 7 or maybe 7.5 out of 10.

...is fucking weak.
Most songs aren't memorable, nothing really stands out. Sure the guitar work is great, but guitars alone don't make an album truly unique, or even good. You need the whole package.
And this cd lacks it. The songs are weak, the lyrics are retarded and the redone version of 'A Tout Le Monde' is atrocious.

Every album by one of these "older" bands has to be "the best since" like NIN, Rush, Machine Head, etc. If you want to hear Downward Spiral or Moving Pictures then listen to those albums. Artists will change. Period. End of story. If you want to listen to "thrash" then don't buy ANY new album because no one did it better than early Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Testament, Exodus, etc. I personally like a lot of the newer Megadeth albums and I don't care if they are "thrash" or not. Don Kaye, if you are so concerned about politics go write for Rolling Stone. Geez, I thought I could read reviews on Blabbermouth that left politics out of it and focused on the music. Okay, now I'll go buy this album and listen to some "not thrash" and best since Rust In Peace...I mean Countdown...I mean Peace Sells...I mean Risk, yes, best since Risk Megadeth music.

This album is about as good as TSHF; it contains shades of classic Megadeth, but retains the emberassing qualities of it's immediate predacessors.
Mustaine's lyrics are ridiculously heavy handed, not to mention awkward. He treats basic political ho-hum with an unabashed sense of reverence so hammy that it's actually cringe inducing.
Musically, it's just ok. He's obviously lost the fire and sense of despair that made classic Megadeth so gripping. A lot of the riffs, albiet clinically executed, sound re-hashed.
Glen Drover is one heck of a guitar player, perhaps the best Dave has had since Friedman, but it sounds like he's ready to burst, and never quite does; he almost sounds limited by the material.
The rest of the band plays their parts perfectly - no surprise, Megadeth is always tight, but there's no passion here, at least none that's coherent.
Perhaps for the next record, Dave should elist the help of a producer that isn't afraid to shout him down, someone who will fucus his sense of frustration and anger into a streamlined, devestating record.
You can tell it's in him;he just has no idea how to bring it out.

I agree that this isn't really full on thrash, but it is as thrash as you will get from a band that has had such huge success and that has been around as long! You'll never get the records you want from these bands because of the mental bar set in your head as to what they should sound like. Plus, I'm sure these guys don't want all of their songs to sound like "Hangar 18" or something. If you want them to, hears a secret, they put the songs on disc so you can play them over and over again if you like! Duh ! Let me see the other "M" band return with a record like this, I think not. The lyrics are very pointed, but it seems as though he's trying to say to many things and get them to fit in the parameters of the music's time signature. You can't try to tell so much of a story in a thrash song clocking in at 180 bpm !
This record is a solo fest by the way. It is very distinct on which player is actually playing. The guitarists definatley have different sounds. I personally liked 7 out of the 11 songs only after two listens to the entire cd. There have been other cd's I've bought for just one good song.
I'm not a huge fan of the artwork, a little to cartoony for me, I like vic skinless !! but hey it's not an art show either. It's all about the music.
Overall I think it is an awesome follow up to The System has Failed!
Gears of war owns!!
P.S. I and going to check out Municipal Waste though, I've heard there pretty good. Also check out Dublin Death Patrol !!!!!!

I would give United Abominations a 8 out of 10.
It isn't quite as strong of an album as The System Has Failed which I rate a 8.5
It likes a bit of the variety of TSHF and the re-make of A Lout Le Monde is completely pointless as the version on Youthanasia was perfect as is.
Here's how I rate the entire Megadeth catalog of studio releases:
1) Killing is My Business.... 8.0 2) Peace Sells...But Who's Buying 9.0 3) So Far So Good So What 7.5 4) Rust in Peace 9.5 5) Countdown to Extinction 8.5 6) Youthanasia 8.0 7) Cryptic Writings 8.5 8) Risk 6.0 (yes I didn't think it was all that bad) 9) The World Needs a Hero 6.0 10) The System has Failed 8.5 11) United Abominations 8.0
and I would rate Hidden Treasures a 8.5 and the MD.45 CD "The Craving" a 8.0 (with Dave on vocals).

Ok, I for on after Youthanasia have lost interest in Megadeth until they came out with Capitol Punishment which was a mediocre record at best but still goood quality stuff on it. Id give that record a 7 out of 10 just for the effort. Then here we go with another line up change which is where I think it makes all the difference in the world. This is by far the best line up since since the Rust In Piece days and no one can argure with that. The Dover brothers are extremly talented as well as James Lomenzo. People may not have liked White Lion's music but you can't deny Lomenzo's playing. Also there are a few mediocre songs on the new CD granted. Even the ones I don't like that much have great druming to make it more accessable to listen to. This iMegadeth CD is by far a 9 out of 10. It may not be thrash but its good old fashioned american heavy metal. Which is what we need today. There's always some asshole that's not happy with something.

I have to admit I have Risk but the only CD I don't have from Megadeth is "The World Needs A Hero" which I might have to break down and buy just to complete my collection. As much as Mustaine is an asshole at times, you have to give the man credit to trying to please his frans unlike dumbass Metallica.

The remastered/remixed version of Risk is a bit of an improvement over the original CD.
He didn't have hardly any control of the band's decisions at that point and Risk was the result.
TWNAH was too much of an attempt to regain past glory and then he just started being himself on TSHF again which is why that album turned out so strong.
BTW, Dave is Megadeth so anyone saying that TSHF isn't a true Megadeth album are nimrods.

"Oh and Megadeth were never a thrash metal band even in their very early days. Most of their songs have always been mid-tempo since their first album."
they were never pure thrash, ala Slayer, but to say they had mostly mid-tempo songs is the early days is false. Killing was rife with fast stuff and Peace Sells was maybe not as consistently fast, but definately has a lot of fast parts.
Megadeth themselves called themselves this back in the mid 80s:
"The world's state of the art speed metal band."
that was the band's (Dave's) very own description of themselves.
now, we can argue semantics on "speed metal" vs. "thrash" but the speed element is common.
how can you debate Dave's very own self description?
my CDs are in storage but i have Peace Sells with me. if need be, i'll listen to it all and point out, song by song, the speed metal elements.
i remember when Countdown came out, me and my thrash buddies all recoiled because THAT was when Deth slowed down to mostly mid tempos.
to compare Countdowns beats per minute with Killing is wrong.
do you know the first couple albums? or did you become a fan when they "broke" big with "Symphony"?
cheers.

Overall this album and The System Has Failed have managed to re-energize the band and bring back the classic shredding which is always good! Let's see if Metallica can put out something that comes close to capturing that old flame!

Weak music, not thrash at all (if you want thrash pick up the new Municipal Waste "The Art of Partying") and the lyrics are racist. But then again Megadeth were done after Countdown to Extinction. 1.

Just picked up the CD and have listened to it twice. Not their best but it's an improvement over their last couple of CDs. Please explain to me the infatuation with Youthanasia. I have that CD and I don't think I have listened to it in about 5 years. All those songs are slow and not very impressive. What am I missing? Of course my favorite Megadeth CD is RIP. From what I have heard so far, I give it a 7/10

This album does not sound bad from what I have heard. It's not the full return I would have like to have seen, but it is a step in the right direction.
I give Dave Mustaine credit for bringing back the musical elements of Countdown To Extinction, and Rust In Peace. I also give Dave credit for carrying forward with music. He has been through some great ups, and some extreme downs. I know his outlook on life is different than it was 20 years ago, but I would have like to seen Dave and Megadeth bring back the full aggression and intensity of Peace Sells...But Who's Buying, and So Far, So Good, So What... Those are my favorite Megadeth albums. Killing Is My Business, and Business Is Good was awesome too. Rust In Peace marks a high point in Mustaine's career, and displays complex musicianship.
United Abominations sounds similar to what would have come after Countdown To Extinction. I was not into Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings is OK, and Risk is not a Megadeth record.
Peace Sells...But Who's Buying, and So Far, So Good, So What were brilliant Metal records with great production, and high energy. I wish that's what Mustaine would have returned to. Especially with Metal being as heavy as it is today, and the fact that Dave Mustaine help pave that path.
They still deliver a great live show. Hearing Wake Up Dead live is always a rush. Hopefully, on the next Megadeth album (or their last) Mustaine will really go out with a blast and bring back the high energy, and aggression he once captured.

I gave this cd a better listen and i still feel the same. its not a thrash album although a few riffs are thrashy but the riffing isn't megadeth whatsoever...its basically eidolon with guest appearance by dave. i dont get how all you people love this album. any seasoned metalhead can clearly see this record isn't what it should be. i heard a couple nice solos but other than that the political ramblings are annoying and gratuitous. the updated a tout le monde is gay and unnecessary. basically it is their radio song to make sure something sells. megadeth will never sound like megadeth as long as menza, marty, and ellefson aren't in the group and dave is a sober whiney pansy who's afraid of rotting christ (who is one of the most mellow black metal bands out there).

So will reserve judgement until then.
When the tracklisting was announced on B'mouth, Dave also said there were two extra tracks that will be used for a special edition. Dave, if you read this also include 'Out On The Tiles' on the special edition as well as a bonus dvd. Please!
Remember, hearing the test mix for Gears Of War and being very impressed. Wasn't that taken with 'Sleepwalker' but it has grown on me. The remake of 'A Tout Le Monde' seems to have been thrust on the band by the label sensing that 'hit single' as they do. Original is best. When Max Norman asked Dave to slow the tempos whilst recording 'Youthanasia' he got it right with that song.
Seeing them in a few weeks at Download which will be cool. They were awesome at the Astoria in Feb '05 and if they can top that, then that'll be the festival for me!
To guy that said he'd prefer to listen to his sister get boned by a black bloke that the new 'Deth album, dude, you need help. Quickly.

Need to give it another listen.
Definitely some throw away tracks on here, but I felt the last one had plenty of those too. So far I'm afraid it might suffer from the syndrome the last one had; first half good, second half mediocre.
One thing is for sure, I wish it had more tasty thrash riffs, and more snarling on Dave's part if he's so pissed.

This is a great metal record period. Dave's message is VERY clear I can understand why maybe this reviewer had a hard time understanding it because I'm sure it goes beyond the comprehension of your common everyday liberal Democrat. Nontheless, while I agree with his points about Atout le monde being unecessary, and Play for Blood and, Blessed be the Dead being kind of filler tracks this is a solid METAL disc.
I can see why Metallica is waiting until 2008 (or 2009 at the rate they're going) because there isn't any way they'll be able to touch this record.
A solid 8.5/10

The new Megadeth that came out today is killer – heavy, fast, melodic, full of hooks, and shredding solos – the closest thing to Rust in Peace 2 I think we will ever see. I'd like to see Metallica try to match this one with whatever they are recording currently.

I liked TSHF quite a lot. But this one emphasizes the heavier elements of 'Deth more. Also...with the obvious exception of the remake...there's less radio-friendly choruses attached to these songs. Glen Drover's contributions are killer, and Dave's playing is top notch.
I found the material solid throughout...but the one-two punch of "You're Dead" and "Burnt Ice" that closes the record would be my highlight.
Good job Dave!! Now...let's start hearing about the GIGANTOUR lineup this year....

i give this a six, some good songs (although nothing amazing) new band is pretty much metal session (Dave smotes the other guy on guitar). First half of the record is solid but lost me in the second half most of side two is skipable. Tout le Monde was actually better than the original IMO but they overdid the vocals waaaaaaayyyyy too much, but is a fun and quite cheesy song, I personally detected meat loaf. As I suspected this isn't album of the year, which so far is the new Manowar. Also dave is trying too hard to make RIP 2, eg lyrically 'How can there be any logic in biological war?' is just the miltary intelligence line from hangar 18.

After three spins I can easily say this is my favorite Megadeth album since Countdown To Extinction. I'll need a little more time with this to be able to fully review it, but I can say as of right now my favorite track is "Never Walk Alone...A Call To Arms", and I think the "A Tout Le Monde" remake while not bad seems to stick out like a sore thumb. It just seems like an odd choice next to the rest of the songs. Either way I can see myself liking this album more and more with each listen.
Good job MegaDave! Now come back on a headlining tour and let's hear "Never Walk Alone" live since you didn't play it May 6th when I saw you open for The Gods that are Heaven And Hell!

I haven't stopped listening to this since acquiring it yesterday. I really like the mix on this record, neither instrument overpowers the other. This is their best in a long time. I'd give it a solid 8, maybe 8.5... The only track I still don't like is 'Amerikhastan', not for it's political view, but because the spoken vocal delivery is downright comical.. Dave has done spoke-word stuff before but on this song there is just no weight to his words. 'A tout le monde' was an unecessary remake. I agree with some of the previous posts that the tempo is probably better but the vocal dubs were waaay overused. The original is still better. One song that keeps growing on me is "play for blood'... there is such a simple rythm in the song that did not sound like it would go anywhere at first, but the interplay and the solos make it feel alot more like a jam session; the playing is loose but never out of control. It was a simple idea that was well fleshed out, although not the best song on the record. I am not gonna compare it to previous albums but rather say that it is a good addition to a good body of work overall.

"Out On The Tiles"?
I was real curious to hear the new rendition of it. Did it wind up as a B-side, or export bonus?
Beyond that I give this a 9/10. It would've been a 9.5/10 but I don't think the remake was necessary on a album. Maybe lace a compilation with it...but not a new release.
Beyond all the bitching here, I am glad Dave was booted from Metallica. Cause if it never happened, we'd never have had fantastic angry metal like this. He'd been trapped as a extra in a big band controlled by a fruity Danish goof and a flannel-shirt-wearing-shotgun-totin'-redneck.
This is a great CD. There are few releases I anticipate, this is at the top of my short list.

I think this is really good, unique effort by Megadeth. Like each of Megadeth's offerings, this album shows off a vast array, assemblages of meshing guitar work in which the strings of each guitar player interweave and tangle, creating a wonderful mess of chaotic melody racing with electricity and mercury. I give it a 10.

Thats "Thrash Metal" Don
Any way its a good album with 2 ripoff riffs.
The intro riff to "Sleepwalker" is quite similar to the first riff of "Holy Wars".
Also the 2nd harmony on "Washington is Next" is quite similar to the harmony in Iron Maidens "Wasted Years"
I'm not sure if wht I said made sense, but look into it and you'll see the similaritys.
Great album, I'm still desiding if its an 8 or 7.

Are you people serious? This is easily the worst record I've heard in any genre of music in about three years. I could go on and on with the reasons why, but I'll stick with the main one: the lyrics and vocal melodies could have been written by a twelve-year old. I cannot believe this crap was put down by the same man who I was considered one of metal's top five or so lyricists. The only word for this, espcially when considering Mustaine's age, is embarrassing. My once favorite band is, at this point, below laughable. Incidentally, I choked on my coffee at that idiotic Metallica comment above. Does anyone think the members of Metallica have actually heard, or ever will hear, this record?

Boring as hell. Nothing much else to say about this one. Doesn't have a memorable track on it and the best song is a less version of a once great one.
And yes Wraith is absolutely right about the horrible lyrics. Dave's attempts to be topical are particularly embarassing. Stop trying to write political 'thrash' Dave. You're not that guy anymore.

I said the exact same thing in a review elsewhere: the rerecorded ATLM, while inferior to the original, is by far the best track here (hell, it's the only one where the vocal lines aren't stuffed into measures into which they don't fit). As you said, Mustaine is not a political thrash guy anymore. Regardless of what he says in the interviews, Cryptic Writings/Risk were exactly what he wanted to do. He's playing metal now because he can't live without the adoration of his "fans", not because he actually likes this music at nearly fifty years old.

"Funny watching people get pissed because of the lyric content."
It has nothing to do with the substantive ideas; it's the choice of verbiage and stylistic emphasis.

I gave the album a 7 it does appreciate with each listen. I think the fire of the old days is gone but not out and he really is trying to re-capture it but I don't think what he wants is the same thing anymore. Being happy, stable and adjusted for someone like him tends to reflect in his talent-it tends to stabilize it. The thing about Dave Mustaine is that he is so hit and miss. Nearly all of his albums tend to feature great songs alongside God awful songs-its hard to believe they are by the same person. Dave's biggest problem I think is a discipline one when it comes to writing. Just my opinion The thing is, he is trying to find it again and good luck to him. I for one shall be happy just to enjoy his music.

No it doesn't but I just wanted to get everybody upset. Does anyone agree with Mr. Kaye that RIP has "mid paced tempos and intertwining riffs" You've got to be kidding me because that sounds like horrible music. Creative use of adjectives does not make a better review if it's wrong. This album is exactly what it sounds like. An old band trying to update their sound. Look at their albums, Dave has always followed the trends to some extent. Having said that, I still love Megadeth.

it's the responsibility of the lyricist to inform themselves a bit if they're going to write political texts. the lyrics of ua are just a collage of incoherent sound bites that one gathers from hearing cable news in the background. if dave's so critical of politicians, why does he insert the politicians' own propaganda into his lyrics?

This album is good, not great. It is solid though, but the second half fades off. Still good and a solid 8.
There are MANY, and I mean many, that will never like a Megadeth album again because of the past and/or Dave's religious beliefs. Your loss my friends. This album is much better lyrically than TSHF and Drover is NOT a Friedman clone (maybe a Rob Rock or Impellitteri clone, Drover is a true shredder).

Why in the hell did they feel the need to put in an article by "Jack Bauer?" Uh, what does a fictional character from a television show have to do with a metal band?
Anyway, the album's great. Horns up Dave!

If you did not like "The System Has Failed" then you will not like this record. People who do not like Megadeth's music anymore or dislike Dave Mustiane seem to still follow his career and his every move. They still compare him and talk about the whole Metallica thing. If you don't like it, shut the fuck up... you're still on his nuts.
United Abominatons is a solid release.

That's why I love this site. :)
Anyway, Sleepwalker is one hell of an asskicker of a song. It reminds me of Good Mourning/Black Friday. The other songs didn't grab me like Sleepwalker did, unfortunately. I appreciate the guitar in most of the other songs but the lyrics and subject matter are not my cup of tea. Persoanlly, I am sick of hearing about Iraq, Bush and the past 6 years of embarassing US politics. I gave the CD to my buddy since he would appreciate it more. He loves it.
I tend to prefer my Mustaine on heroin. He seems to make the best songs while juiced up and severely pissed off. That is why I don't listen to much after Countdown. Megadeth '85-'92 is pure gold in my opinion with Peace Sells being my favorite.
Kudos to Dave for getting back out there and making another CD. It isn't horrible by any means, like St. Anger, but it just didn't grab me. Nothing after Countdown has grabbed me, except for Rude Awakening and that doesn't count.
6/10
+ Awesome intro song, good soloing on most songs, voice sounds a lot better.
- Political subject matter overdone, not up to par with previous releases (but better than everything else made since Countdown).

I agree with Kaye that Mustaine's politics on this album are incoherent and generally sophomoric. He's much better off keeping things as vague as possible.

Learn your history before talking total crap. Mustaine CLAIMS to have written ONE riff that was used in Leper Messiah (the thrash break, he calls it a spider riff), and that is ALL as far as any sort of involvement of Mustaine on MOP goes. And on RTL he only wrote parts of the title song and Ktulu.
As for United Abominations... Sleepwalker is ace, Washington and the title song are good listens too. The second half of the album is a mess though, it all sounds the same and is highly unmemorable. A 6.5 is about right.

The middle of the album really fails to stand out. It picks up again at À Tout Le Monde. Peculiar that the song with the dumbest title, Amerikhastan, is probably the best in my opinion? Hmmm.
Whatever. Not too bad I guess, but I liked The System Has Failed a lot more.

I would have rated this album higher but Dave's vocals are too tame. A lot of people have said they don't care for his voice and I can't quite understand why. It's very unique, especially on songs like Sweating Bullets, Holy Wars, Rust in Peace and Train of Consequences to name a few. Sleepwalkers comes closest but he still doesn't seem to really let loose enough.
Least favorites are probably Washington is Next! and Never Walk Alone. I disagree with the review where Play For Blood is concerned, I think it's one of the better songs on the album. Blessed Are the Dead and Gears of War are pretty good too. And the best line is "One day I'll dance on your grave, even if you're buried at sea". No not really, but it made me laugh. I also like Amerikhastan quite a bit.
I know a lot of people also don't care for Cryptic Writings, but I think Dave did a great job with the lyrics on that album. Use The Man is one of my favorite Megadeth songs and I thought Burnt Ice was a bit too similar in theme and nowhere near as good.
Overall I really like it...some minor disappointments because of the vocals, but musically it's awesome. Best album so far this year for me. I hope it does well on the charts...it would be nice to see it in the top five.

indeed another step in the right direction. tshf got the ship back on course, this one tightens the sails. again, there are elements of every megadeth album intermingled here. i hope dave gives the drover brothers and james a chance to do a second album. for the naysayers, sure, it's not thrash, sure it's not speed, but it is a metal album, it's got some catchy riffing and sweet solos. i'm not big on the revamp of "a tout le monde" however, it's ok, but i think cristina could have done better. would have been interesting to hear lisa marie just for the hell of it. anyway, a solid album. hail mustaine.

Megadeth has come out with a fairly good thrash metal record this time. I think it has outdone their previous release, and is their best record since Youthanasia. Still in all, I think that their glory days are over. It's time for somebody else to carry on the thrash metal torch and the number one candidate to do so is Trivium. They are the best metal band that has come out in some years

When Kerry King ( Slayer Fame )was in Megadeth 9.0, ask Katon from Hirax about this !!!!!
) Killing is My Business.... 7.0 2) Peace Sells...But Who's Buying 7.0 3) So Far So Good So What 7.0 4) Rust in Peace 10.0 ++ (Top 10 Metal of all time) 5) Countdown to Extinction 8.0 ( Kind of like the Black album) 6) Youthanasia 6.0 7) Cryptic Writings 5.0 8) Risk 0.00 (Think Sellout out era Metallica) 9) The World Needs a Hero 5.0 10) The System has Failed 4.0 11) United Abominations 4.0
I figure since this is a 8.0 by Don Kaye or Bergman I figure I have to subtract 6 points for Rock albums ( which this seems to be by all the true fans comments) and add 7 points for metal albums.

in MY opinion that is. I listen to the music, read the lyrics, and it seems like it fits well after that album. I think the album is a cross between "Countdown..." and "The System...". All in all, I give this album a 9 only because they re-recorded "A Tout Le Monde" which was unnecessary. Sorry Dave, but it was a waste of an open track.

i see this thing at target and got all excited, i haven't bought a megadeth album since immediately returning my copy or Risk, but this looked all political and i had heard that the last album was more of a return to form. maybe it's the fog of memory but i thought Dave was, despite being born again, more in line with my political views. Or maybe it's because I still listen to So Far, So Good, So What... Imagine my disgust when the first thing I see is Jack Bauer story? WTF and it's officially sanctioned by Fox. 24 is pure, unapolagetic government propaganda. So after I swallow my vomit I start reading along with the lyrics. Wow, these are the WORST fucking lyrics I've seen in awhile. They're almost as bad as St Anger(the song, I never heard that album). Rediculous spoken word crap, more recycled four horsemen bullshit, a corny as hell opener, a blatant plug for a video game, shitty puns, ill informed and confused politics, hell the only good line was the god versus god thing. And to those who doubt what side Dave's on, he's stated that he voted for Bush. The 2nd time. I thought the album looked promising from the song titles but i was dissapointed, embarassed, and offended by this album. Hey musicly I guess it was pretty decent though. For the record my copy ended up in the microwave, and the trash shortly after.

Good album with great moments. DM *was* right. This sounds like an actual band playing, but it suffers from two things. Firstly, the drummer just doesn't suit. He's good, but he's not got the jazzy feel of former drummers. Secondly, and it's not anywhere near as bad as with The System Has Failed, but sometimes it just seems like Mustaine tries to be like old Megadeth too much. The System Has Failed was so obviously him trying to write Rust in Peace 2, with all those wierd chopped riffs like in Holy Wars. Still, this new album is still much, much better.

That's like talking shit about your parents. Dave should be very grateful that he even played with metallica. Did anybody else hear a HUGE George Lynch influence with the new guitarist? He is pretty good, and you can definetely tell when Dave is playing, but Dover sounds a lot like Lynch.
Pretty good cd, I have to say. I wish Dave would lay off the lead guitar, and let his guitarist do what he does, but oh well. I like the remake, Sleepwalker is cool, and the rest are good. Some are a little too reminiscent of older and even his recent stuff, but not too shabby.

but with less keyboards and more politics. It's not a thrash record, but still heavier than anything since RIP, and enough speed and good guitar work to keep it interesting. And since others have already mentioned Metallica, it's better than anything since AJFA.
I think it's pretty easy to understand Dave's statements. You don't have to agree with everything the government has done in Iraq (Haliburton) to agree that the intial action was correct.

First off, I took the trek up to Canada to check out the first (and later the second) leg of the Heaven & Hell/Megadeth tour. Megadeth was like a fucking machine. I swear that Dave programs his hands, because he plays the most ridiculous rhythms without even acknowledging what his fingers are doing.
Secondly, Glen Dover is the first Megadeth guitarist since Friedman to hold a candle to Rust in Peace. Dover has a sick vibrato, excellent tone, and he has those weird scales and super fast shredding that got me into Megadeth in the first place. While I imagine he is no Jason Becker, this dude rocked "Tornado of Souls" as good as Friedman and is a-o-fuckin-k in my book.
This album is definitely excellent, but first off, "The System Has Failed" was, too. While maybe not over the top heavy, the solos, riffs, breakdowns, and dynamics of the album were great. This one raises the bar. While there are a few generic tracks, the first three tracks alone are worth the price of admission. The playing is amazing, the production is excellent, and honestly, Dave's voice and vocal melodies have never been better. Other than some overly corny lyrics at time, the guitar assault is back. Now lets just hope Rick Rubin can bring some fucking sense back to Metallica so we can have our good 'ol 80's thrash back again!

Finally bought this. UA is such an incredible metal album.
I've read fan reviews on many different web sites for UA, and it seems that most bad reviews come from those who disagree with Dave's political/religious beliefs. Too bad, your loss on some great music.
"Play For Blood" is perfect.

This is a solid metal album.Very good. This younger generation does not have a clue to what a "good" metal album is.RIP will always be the standard, but United Ambitions is a very worthy effort.Maybe Lars & James should take a few poiters from Dave on how to make a good heavy metal record. But the well has run dry for that band.Only one complaint about this new album though.I miss the "classic" Vic Rattlehead. 8/10

The album down to up isnt better than there last but, Sleepwalker is there best song in their last decade for sure.

Even if, from a european perspective, Mustaine's political lyrics are laughable, it's still 1000 times less embarassing than anything written by Kerry King on the last two Slayer studio albums. Musically this is a pretty solid effort, sometimes predictable but crafted with pride and precision. Who cares if this is thrash or not ? Let's not forget that Mustaine is approaching 50 so having him trying to write Black Friday 2 would be super ridiculous. Not great by any means but very decent and the best mixed Megadeth album in ages.

Not bad, but not great. Somehow its hard to expect any better from the man at this stage in the game. Theres nothing on here quite as good as Blackmail The Universe or Back In The Day from TSHF, but Washington Is Next (lyrics aside) comes close, being the strongest track on the album by a longshot.
I dont see the big deal about Sleepwalker, Tout Le Monde is utterly, utterly pointless and stuff like Play For Blood and United Abominations are distinctly average.
Call to Arms hits the spot though, as does Burnt Ice (those solos!) and the intersting sounding Amerikhastan.
I find it hard to agree with Dave's pro church pro Bush stance, and what seems like tons of ill informed political shit for lyrics. Unfortunately for me and many others this totally marrs the album.
I give it a 6.5/7 overall. Lets face it, they will never touch any of the first 4 again, and i prefer TWNAH to this but hey, he's trying, and they finally sound like a band again.

To all of you waiting to hear a new death cd that sounded like thier first couple, it aint gonna happen. Do you stupid idiots still do the same shit you did 15 to 20 years ago or are all of you just dumb ass teenagers. This album is awsome and it blows away all of the stupid new metal crap that is constantly played on the radio. Mustaine has always been a very political person and it is known in the metal world that he is also one of the brightest. Hey Hatred when you say Dave has no clue what he is talking about it is obvious that you are the one who has no clue, Daves political views may be diffrent than yours but he is dead on and to Eyesuck Metallica are a bunch of pussys and the only reason thier first 2 albums are so good is because Dave wrote them.

This is a damn good record. Guitars are crisp, and cut through. Daves lyrics are half Daily News with John Stewart, half teenage angst from a 40+ year old. I like it... A lot. Reminds me of Rust in Peace in more than a few ways. My biggest complaint is the songs don't stand up as songs sometimes. They are great shows of production and guitar stamina, but sometimes lacking in innovation. But this is as close to Megadeth as I remember, and it blows away everything since the early 90's. Maybe Thrash is making a resurgence. If I didn't actually watch Slayer on tour last year, I would think so. They just seemed to be going through the motions with Cult. This brings me back though. Good job Dave and new crew.

I was full on into this band from when I got into them in 1988 up until after Rest In Piece, after that I felt they were going soft and or trying to get more mainstream. After the 90”s passed I realized that all the bands went through a transformation and or broke up.
I kept on listening to the new records coming out until I hear The System Has Failed, and realized that Megadeth were back and were still capable of writing killer songs and lyrics.
I firmly believe that the album before this and this album are solid and worth buying if you are into old school Megadeth like myself and never got into trendy ass radio rock and or rap rock, you will like this album.
Like most albums there are really good songs, ok ones and some pretty crappy ones. The really good songs make it worth buying I have listened to this album repeatedly and keep thinking to myself, man if this guys is in his 40’s and or approaching his 50’s and is able to play songs like this, I myself have to step it up a notch or 5!
Great album, again if you like the 1st 4 albums.
Highly recommended!

This album is so political it hurts but in a good way Mustaine delivers and tells of all the wrong doings of the United Nations and world politics and bashes them.
This is also original Megadeth because of all of the awesome solos, lyrics, riffs and just a pure Megadeth sound all together

Megadeth has one problem, besides Dave being i the band:) They can make good music, but not a good record. Like this one there is five songs that kick ass. Althought there is one song from the cryptic writings period. And my megadeth fan is besed on a records like Cryptic, Rust In Peace, Risk and Abominations. And WHY IN THE WORLD MAKE A NEW TOUT LE MONDE. My head is not that big to understand why. Still...good record, 2 mind blowers and 1 MISTAKE( can´t forgive that one). But it´s only music

united abominations is so far removed from any megadeth record ever created and it just doesn't sit well. i love when dave rips political reviews apart, but this record is so direct. every other megadeth record was timeless. you could spin youthanasia 20 years from now and you would feel the exact same, or risk. but, mustaine tried so hard to hit the nail on the head he ended up totally missing it. the musical content on the record is great. but would it kill him not to talk about the iraq war on at least three fucking songs. i don't give a fuck about the war because i'm Canadian. i'm sure a lot of other megadeth fans around the world feel the same

Blade 23455
Where to start with your post? Ever heard of punctuation? It's generally used to break up a statement and make it readable, which yours isn't. Secondly, you say Metallica's first 5 albums were metal - you are right. This also brings up the AGE OLD metallica thesis - Load and ReLoad weren't metal albums, nor were they supposed to be. Metallica had nothing to prove after the Black album, and you can't argue that, so they had two ways to go - reproduce the same album year in year out like Iron Maiden have, or do something different. They chose the latter obviously. What makes a band great is their ability to have the balls to change, and not giving a shit what people thought. If they gave a shit then they wouldn't have made ReLoad, they would've made the Black album Mark II. You seem to also forget that Megadeth did an album very similar to the style of Load and ReLoad, which was Cryptic Writings. Now I thought both band's efforts were excellent, but what continues to piss me off is everyone seeing Megadeth through rose-tinted glasses because of Metallica'a high profile 'blunders'. I don't begrudge Megadeth any success, far from it, I am just as big a fan of them as I am Metallica. You continue to say Metallica only care about the money, from which you almost certainly imply that they sold out. Not true. How can they have sold out if no-one liked Load and Re-load? Metallica took the opportunity to do whatever they liked, and grabbed it with both hands. What disappoints me is the amount of times I have to make this point on ANY Megadeth-related forum, purely because of elitist morons like you. Both bands rule, Blade 23455 - you SUCK.

Maybe Metallica shouldn't have booted Mustaine from the band? Are you crazy?! For a start, Metallica made 5 (arguably 4) of the most important metal albums of all time minus Dave, and through Dave being kicked out, he created another awesome band - Megadeth! The fact you like Type O Negative proves you have no clue what you're talking about. Stop being a dick and think things through, fucking Metalhead wannabes.

Man, I love metal fans like you. You're like sitting ducks. First of all, it's ok to use punctuation, really! Secondly Megadeth didn't change their music? So Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings, Risk and even the World Needs A Hero were thrash diamonds just like Rust In Peace and Peace Sells were they? No, they were totally different. I'm afraid I will have to refuse your offer to "shove my facts up my ass", as it's these FACTS that prove that you, as you so eloquently put it, are the moron.
If you didn't understand the big words, here are the definitions:
Definition - What something means Punctuation - Little marks that make statements readable Eloquently - Well said Youthanasia (or euthanasia I should say) - something you should consider.

You see blade, you seem to completely miss the point of my statements in your terribly written response. I'm not trying to suggest that Metallica are better than Megadeth, I'm saying that to even entertain the idea that Metallica 'suck' is foolish, weather you're a fan of their music or not. I think it's time you grew up, and learned to accept the fact that just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it sucks.
Anyway, leaving this inane 'debate' behind, I thought United Abominations was very good, but not as good as The System Has Failed. System had brilliantly thrashy songs like 'Kick the Chair' and 'Back in The Day', with the utterly classic song (in my eyes) 'Truth Be Told', which in my opinion could be the best song Mustaine has written to date. United Abmoninations seems to go a bit more mid-tempo in general, and all too often goes the way of earlier albums - solo's EVERYWHERE. Don't get me wrong, I love a good guitar solo, but when there's about 6 in a song it kinda takes the shine off of the piece. Anyway, it's good.

The best one since Rust in Peace (definitely not as good) . I say that every time though. Every time it's an increment better than the last, but so far from as good as it should be. Every time it's like it's building back, but it builds to nothing. WEAK, in one word. Burn the first four tracks and forget you know about the rest. It's like he's trying to please everybody - metal heads and the Cuntdown fans. Guess what, you've let down both. And the radio fans will leave in an instance anyway. What to do? Isn't it clear?

And it´s also true that you hate load reload st.anger and some of you even the black album, but yet you seem to TRASH IT UP with youthanasia countdown and rust in peace. Megadeth don´t have a single good record like i stated before. And to be complitely honest, Raised Fist is more heavy than Megadeth ever was. I wonder if the situation would be other way around with this metallica-megadeth fight. What would the result be. ...well metallica would still kick ass and dave would be crying about it:) ...relax people, relax...tomorrow its going to sunshine and smiles

Blade my boy. i´m sorry i ruined your day. but you need to know this if your mother hasn´t revealed this to you yet. Megadeth is a weak band. Abominations it´s a good album i give you that, but system has failed...give me a break. i guess you have not even heard the record. Testament - gathering is a good record. The best from them as far as i´m conserned. But with this issue you seem to have with metallica. if the big boys give you trouble don´t mind them. they only have weak selfesteem, so they give you hard time cause that´s all they can do. and it´s ok to listen green day, don´t be ashamed to admit that. they had a good album with american idiot. i bet you like to go to disco and during the song bulevard of brokes dreams....oh yeah you don´t think dave is a greedy bastard when he releases every year a new best of megadeth album. and when he makes re-make of a old song and puts it into hes new album.Megadeth is like linkin park. why not release an album made of remixes of their old songs.Even linkin park is more trash today than megadeth ever was. just face it, dave is just another gitar player among the others. he just has news headlines becouse he was in metallica and he cryes about it becouse hes not anymore.

After the "System has failed" I thought that Megadeth with next album will completely go back to the days of glory, but it's seems that sh** never stop happens. This is the worst Megadeth album in a while. But Dave's pockets are finally full, they are at every pop radio/TV station around the world. What is next... Washington, or a duet with Rihanna & Justin Timberlake?

The only thing most of you people appreciate any more is underground metal! "People think we souled out just because we don't play a thousand miles and hour all the time" - Cliff Burton
Just listen to Cliff. Does it have to be played like thrash or speed metal to be good? Hell No! Is thrash and speed metal kick ass? Hell Yeah!
But the point is these bands have to express themselves, and you can't really do that if your stuck in one genre of metal your entire career. Especially if your career spands more than 20 years like bands like Megadeth and Metallica. Metal can still kick ass even if it's on the radio, or even if it doesn't follow what the bands have done in the past!
Open your minds people, don't be so damn close minded.

I can't believe the amount of bad reviews on here about this album. This record is a fucking beast! put this and "System Failed" up against any other Deth records. Dave's vocals have much improved and I love the political spins. The riffage on here is like a machine gun -- nonstop.
I was looking forward to this album and Dave did not disappoint. This album will be responsible for Metallica getting their shit together -- you watch and listen.

I just bought the album on itunes.
My Review: Great album, their best since Risk The started to suck after Killing is my bussiness.. and the Risk album brought them back to life. All of the people who gave this album a bad review are morons.

Finally, I bought "United Abominations" used. Sorry. It's brillant. The soloing is outstanding. Stellar. Really, really outstanding. I was planning on listening to it later, though, for some reason, just a few minutes ago seemed like the perfect time.
It took me a long time to get into it, "United Abominations". At a time when younger bands are riding a shallow wave of shameless copyright infringement, Dave Mustaine was obviously looking twenty-five years ahead and twenty-five years back.
So, you know, it's difficult to evaluate your work, Megadeth dosen't get the recognition it deserves.
---'MEGADETH's eleventh studio outing doesn't quite reach the peaks of earlier milestones like "Rust In Peace" and "Peace Sells, But Who's Buying?" yet it's clearly the band's best effort since 1994's underrated "Youthanasia".'---
I wonder if that's in aggregates? Obviously. Though that is the corporate game I think, though subtle hints from the bureaucracy do not help, espescailly in encouraging strong album sales for an exceptional album of work.
I don't want to talk about the other Megadeth albums because, comparison is futile.
I noticed comparisons to two other bands, I know of Dave Mustaine's collaborations with one of the artist mentioned and I cought Megadeth on tour with the other, though,
Spacey is a good description, not "menacing", not "galloping", obviously the reviewer has never been to nor participated in a slam poetry event.
"United Abominations" works on so many levels, I think Dave Mustaine gets overlooked because we, the population of the United States, get thrown a screwball by the press. Whether regarding world politics, culture (yogurt anyone), oh, and, the Prometheus gimick in the 'critics' review "...original fire..." only serves to nurture the flames of someone's adolescence, Dave Mustaine makes some very astute observations. Sorry, I digress, though the album is great. Really great.
You also get an idea of how "modern", "contemporary", and other words indicating relevance, Dave Mustaine is vs. his younger contemporaries writing the second movement, compliment earlier works such Warhorse, Recipe For Hate..., but we don't have that perspective yet. It's not Dave Mustaine's fault, how many Megadeth songs have gone platinum just from their inclusion in video games, but, it's not this perspective. We have the perspective of the reviewer, not the celebration of a great musician. In deed, the symphony of destruction has the presence of something gone terribly right.
So, Dave Mustaine, I don't know how you do it, though, it's like someone's not listening, you know, when your record reviewer is alluding to aggregates, record sales, not music, so, you keep a smile on your face so it seems, and get reminded with the weight of platinum. "Get the axe...", very heavy, very expensive axe...
The reviewer didn't say the album is good, he said it wouldn't sell. Now that was cheap, your own label and all...
And everyone has read that fucker's subliminal message, and, just like God said, the album didn't sell.
This is about how many good experiences you can have with a Megadeth album, not how many times reality can obscured by descriptive ambiguity. To the reviewer it's like there's a pulse...
Electro-shock things on the chest...
Clear...
Clear...
Clear...
Like you ever went away...
---"so that he can jam in every point he wants to make."---
Every note, every rest...
Of course, it's all for you...

Excellent album. My favorite album of 2007 along with Type O Negative's 'Dead Again'. Can't wait for the next Megadeth album.

Dave Mustaine's old music was way better than the stuff that he produces today. And for that, i give him credit for trying atleast.
