8 out of 10. I liked down to earth. I pretty much thought ozzmosis sucked... but this is a great cd. It ain't classic but it sure is enjoyable. Hail the Ozzman.

a little too industrial and overproduced sounding on some parts for an ozzy album. the ballads are not that good. should have had at least a couple of more tracks, considering he only puts an album out every 5 or 6 years. seems better than down to earth. not worth buying in my opinion.

If it wasn't for Ozzy finally letting Zakk play again (like back on No Rest for the Wicked and somewhat on No more Tears) than this would be a complete waste. The same tired song topics, the same crappy ballads, and the same ultra produced vocals. Decent riffs and actually a few good solos.

I havent heard the album (I also am not rating it because of that) but I heard the live performance Ozzy did during WWE last week and that song is just terrible. Some decent guitar licks (smacked of Dam That River by AIC though), but the lyrics and singing wasn't very good. Plus, Ozzy looked foolish dancing around on stage. I've never been a big Ozzy fan but I'd like to at least hear this album to see if he can change my mind because I do respect him, actually his legacy.

I was going to say the same thing. The US always gets screwed on everything. Japan has the best technology and games, Taiwan and China make pretty much everything in existence, Europe gets better artwork and better exposure on music, and the US gets....eh? What do we get? We get....um....yeah. Generic, watered down shit.

1) 'Ozzmosis' is easily Ozzy's best album since 'Bark At The Moon' - 'Perry Mason', 'Thunder Underground', 'My Jeckyl Doesn't Hide' 'Tomorrow', I Just Want You', and 'See You On The Other Side' (Ozzy's best ballad since the Randy days) are all very good.
2) 'Black Rain' is no 'Ozzmosis' - by a long shot. The songs are solid but not great. There are no instant classics on this album. If anything, this is a more refined, more musical version of what Zakk's been cranking out with BLS for years now. Bottom line: Ozzy would do well to shake things up but since he is scared shitless to go it without Zakk to the point where he puts up with his heavy alcoholism it ain't gonna happen.
P.S.: Hopefully we'll get a HEAVEN & HELL studio album next - it would wipe the floor with 'Black Rain.'

Crushing dissappointment only two songs which are ok. everything sucks, processed drums, slap bass!!! stale guitar riffs, and generic zakk solos, ozzy worst vocal performance. Hard to believe this is the same guy who played a part in those first six sabbath albums and the rhoads era classics. Weak songwriting Ozzy needs to find some guys to write the lyrics and riffs. Upon hearing this I hope Sabbath stay with Dio for a long time.

I know for a fact that Ozzy still has sex with numerous young men.
How do I know you ask? Well, I am a very close friend of the family, and Sharon told me all about it. She is both very sad and angry about it, but she doesn't address this issue publicly since she is scared that record sales might drop.

Ozzy, quite rightly, has his place in History. However, that does not give him the right to an instant high rating. I judge all albums on the premise that I have never heard of the artist before. Based on that, had this been a new artist/band, this album would not get beyond a 5/10. Sorry, but it's not that great.

Ozzy IS the Godfather of Metal, deal with it. Even if this is complete and utter crap (which I don't know, since I haven't heard it yet), his legacy will always remain in tact. His work with Sabbath alone, for instance, guarantees his greatness in the world of metal/hard rock. Dio, while a good singer and frontman, will NEVER have the great legacy Ozzy has. The Dio version of Sabbath was nothing compared to the classic Ozzy lineup, and while Dio's voice may be technically better, Ozzy's voice was always more unique. Someone above mentioned that it has an "eery" quality to it, and I couldn't agree more...that's a great description. I've always wondered what it is, exactly, and that's it. I don't even know why this has to turn into an Ozzy vs Dio debate. They're each great, but there's just no way that Dio's legacy will ever outshine Ozzy's, no matter if Ozzy releases sub par solo albums or not. Besides, I'm sure this new one will have some good moments, especially when you consider that the Ozzman is almost 60 years old. That's quite an accomplishment. Anyway, LONG LIVE OZZY!

The middle part of Trap Door is almost interesting, but the rest of this album is just bland mainstream rock. The last great song Ozzy participated in was Led Clones from After The War, the Gary Moore album from 1989. We all know that Zakk Wylde is no Moore, not as a player, not as a songwriter.
I'd give Black Rain a generous 5/10, but considering the Maiden Ozzfest incident, Don Kaye's sucking up to the Ozzy camp and his hilarious review of A Matter Of Life And Death, it's a 4/10 for me.

the thing with ozzy was always been half album superb with memorable songs that stay on my mind forever, half album decent (randy rhoads era), bad(later 80's era), mediocre(zakk wylde era). this album is the only one in the zakk wylde era that is almost completely mediocre. songs like perry mason, no more tears , dreamer and running out of time are completely absent. a 6 just because ozzy sings and its good and heavy for drinking beers in a bar without caring for the music.

This album's more cohesive than "Down to Earth" because these songs were written by the band (I think, there isn't any cd sleeve or liner notes included in the cd, absolultely nothing), unlike the last album, which had songs contributed by other producers and even Dexter Holland from The Offspring and Dave Grohl. And anyone who didn't like "Ozzmosis" (including the reviewer) is functionally retarded. "Ozzmosis" was the best Zakk album Ozzy's ever done, and my fourth Ozzy favorite overall (1-Diary, 2-Blizzard, 3-Bark, 4-Ozzmosis).
Anyway, I'm pissed because I had my friend open up the cd for me so I could listen to it on the ride home and he "accidentally" threw away the code for free tickets, which I realized after I already got home. So now I'm going to have to put the cd back in it's thin cardboard case and crack it so I can return it to Best Buy to get another copy, with a new ticket code.

Freakoziod1, wtf are you talking about? Ozzy was in Black Sabbath when they first started. The band was known as Earth before Black Sabbath and something else before that and they had more members. Don't talk shit if you don't know what you're talking about. Everyone in the "Original Black Sabbath" is responsible for "creating" metal. I don't care what you say about Sharon, but everyone should respect Ozzy for his musical contributions. END OF STORY!

man, what crawled up YOUR ass? Look, the term "Godfather of Metal" was being thrown around LONG before the whole "The Osbournes" shit started, and long before Ozzy got tired of running the corporation and handed the keys over to Shauron. Seriously, nobody is saying that Iommi isn't the true originator of Sabbath. EVERY metal fan...even casual metal fans, know that Iommi wrote all the great metal riffs and that everyone after him is really only variating on the theme he put forth. The thing is, Black Sabbath was something special; they came out at a time when the music world desperately needed something massively heavy (back in 1970, "Black Sabbath" was incredibly heavy and dark), and Sabbath fit the bill. They took it all a step further than, say, Led Zeppelin, and although Ozzy was never a great vocalist in the true sense of the word, his voice was (and still is) extremely distinctive and original. Ozzy was the original front-man for metal, and he became the face of metal, in many ways. He was always a great ambassador for metal. Poseurs can bitch and moan all they want about the Dio era being better, blah blah blah, but seriously, if everyone is honest with themselves, the logical conclusion is that the original Black Sabbath was far superior, and a big part of that was because of Ozzy. Whether or not he wrote songs, etc, is a moot point. The fact is, he added an element to the songs that Geezer and Tony wrote that no other singer (Dio included) could bring. Yes, he did always have that "eery" quality even before his voice got over-processed. Ozzy is, for sake of argument, 60 years old. A lot of us have grandparents that age...think about it. Can we cut the guy a *little* slack for relying on production and studio trickery? I think so. I'd rather have this version of Ozzy around than none. Is he a bit of a cartoon character nowadays? Yeah, sure. But really, so is Dio (did anyone see Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny? Tell me THAT wasn't cartoonish). I'm tired of fair-weather "fans" suggesting he should retire. Let's see how you feel about hearing that said to you, one day when you're 60, and maybe not able to do your job as well as you did when you were younger. Ozzy's not ready to just hang it up, and I, for one, support him in continuing to rock, even if he's not the same guy he was during the Sabbath and Randy Rhodes years. I hope I still rock that hard when I'm 60. Again, I say, LONG LIVE OZZY!

well said. Ozzy is 25% responsible for the greatness of the original (and, really the only version that truly matters) Sabbath. I'm amazed that people slag him so relentlessly...Ozzy's like an old uncle that you respect and love...he's a metal God(father) and should be respected and cut some slack. That being said, there are some very very good moments on this new disc. I'm just beginning to digest it.

...not that good. But no real big suprise there...the advance song clips didn't have me anticipating something great to begin with.
I'm cool with Ozzy settling into old age and not trying to make a full blown METAL album anymore...but the new cd just kinda falls flat. I hope it grows on me more...
I liked the new Sabbath tracks with Dio much more.
Oh..."Ozzmosis" fans...if you think that release was Zack's finest Ozzy record, then you've been stoned since 1995. What a piece of garbage that album was...crap material...Beinhorn's production was too slick...and you can find better riffs from Zack on any 10-second clip from NWFTW.
Anyway...I'm disappointed with the new cd, but I supported the man and bought it.

I find it sort of amusing that many of you pick on the Ozzman's voice. Let me again stress that he's SIXTY years old, and spend a good 45 of those 60 years living a hard life of overindulgence, drug abuse, and detox, etc. The guy is a battle scarred veteran...a true veteran. Look at all the hard rock greats...Roger Daltry...Robert Plant...Ozzy...NONE of them can sing like they used to sing, yet they carry on. Actually, if anyone bought Plant's last record, you might agree that it's pretty damn good, overall. Anyway, to the point: what do you expect from someone old enough to be a grandfather to most of you? Do you expect him to have the pipes of someone who is 25 years old? Get real. I have NO problem with some studio embellishments to help him along. Most younger guys in bands have equal amounts, it's just more hidden. Get over it.

The new album is good.
Ozzy is the metal king because Black Sabbath, with Ozzy launched heavy metal music onto the map. Each member contributed their own special magic to this mix and Ozzy's voice tone was perfect for Sabbath's doom-laden sound. It's Ozzy's voice that got me hooked on Sabbath. Even though Dio has a stronger range than Ozzy, his style of singing and the way his voice sounds does not appeal to me. Ozzy's voice ALWAYS had and still does have a totally unique and distinctive sound to it. It does sound eerie and its not effects because on their first album, Black Sabbath, Ozzy's vocals were raw and unprocessed and on that song Black Sabbath, Ozzy's voice sounds like the end of the world is coming. Oh and Ozzy was in Black Sabbath from the very beginning when they were known as the Polka Tulk Blues Band.
Give him credit he's almost 60 years old with a 40 year career under his belt.

Am I the only person that hears Zombie, Rammstein, Marylin Manson, NIN and Oomph in the playing of Zakk? Whatever...

no doubt, you mention some pretty good bands in that list of yours, and some that are "eh". But, I don't quite understand your point. Are you saying that, because there is other metal out there, we should skip Ozzy? I mean, for true, open-minded metal fans, isn't there enough room in our CD players for several new releases? I think the point that you, and many posting on this board are missing, is that Ozzy makes records for his true fans now. He's not trying to win over any masses, nor does he need to. For those of you bashing Ozzy, I have no idea what he ever did to you, but it must have been awful. The guy has actually done so much for metal over the years (as it has been mentioned, being the front man/vocalist for the band that pretty much started the genre), and he at least deserves respect. Look, here's my suggestion; because this is Ozzy and he's the venerable grandaddy of metal, can we just agree that if you don't have anything nice to say, just shut the fuck up? I mean, it's ok if you don't like the new album, or whatever, but please...please stop slagging the guy so hard. Instead, go to some other post and get out your frustrated metal aggressions. Ozzy, at the least, deserves respect.

This album had way too much influence from the producer, probably because ozzy's brain is so fried he doesn't know how to make music like he used. Zakk Wylde's guitar work on this album, as don admired in his review, was really what kept this album from being more commercial garbage with a "let's try and release a cd before i go on tour and give people a first crack at free tickets as an incentive" attitude.

Ok PPL listen........I respect Ozzy. I respect him for his contributions to metal and music. I do not respect what has happened to his image, which has become a joke. However, if this album does well and the majority likes it, then I will be happy. I am not an Ozzy fan music wise, I own Diary and Bark and they are ok but I don't listen to them much. I enjoy some early Sabbath stuff but not as much as the Dio years. However, if Ozzy can reclaim his legacy, make a new Sabbath album, return to the non joke he was about 20 years ago, then I'll be happy.
And anyone saying that the Ozzy Sabbath era IS far superior than the Dio era, that is fine for you to say that as your opinion, but not as fact. I think musically the Dio era is better, but the Ozzy era was another totally different band that had different contributions. Both are good and we can agree on that, most of us.

i'm not going to go on with the with ozzy vs dio shit, but anyone who says ozzy's not keeping with the times does not have a clue what their taliking about. ozzy's always stayed aware of what's current in heavy music. of his generation, very few artists have managed to stay in the game and most the ones the have are still crankin' out the same cliches from the 70's and 80's(dio,priest,) yeah..his voice is pretty rough, i'll give you that, but the creativity is still there. now i just wish jake e lee would come back.

Listened to this streaming on AOL 2x yesterday, and i'm sorry, i LOVE Ozzy, LOVE Sabbath, he's an icon, he deserves every ounce of success he's earned, but this album is horrible. Totally dated, the riffs are generic (let's face it, Zakk is a great player but he writes crap songs), and Ozzy's vocals are so Pro-Tooled it's ridiculous. And that 80's studio sheen is just over, no one wants to hear that anymore. It's sad to say, but Ozzy in 2007 is just not relevant, and is clearly incapable of having anything to say musically and lyrically. This is hard to write, but it's definitely time to pack it in for Ozzy. If he wants to tour and play his vast catalog of great Sabbath and solo stuff, more power to him, but I think he might want to stay out of the studio. Terrible record!

It has got to be one of the most generic Rock&Roll songs that I have heard from a Living Legend... well... Ever!
The chorus is EXTREMELY Childish, almost reminiscent of a playground taunt. The first 20 seconds are the best part, and the rest fail to stimulate any musical bone in my body. The mix sounds terrible, the lyrics could have been written by a 3rd grader that reads at a 5th grade level, and I could have sworn that I have heard that Zakk Wylde solo somewhere before....(or MANY times before)
All in all, if this is the song they chose to be the single, then this album is in bad shape from the get-go.
Im glad I caught Ozzy live many years ago, because To see him now would be a complete waste of time.
If any of you like it, well, to each his own, but I just dont see how any self respecting Ozzy/Metal/Rock&Roll/MUSIC fan would want any part of this blaitent comercial B.S.

you can argue ozzy vs dio all you want, its all personal preference. To me its plain to see that Mr. Dio does possess a more powerful, wider ranging voice than Ozzy does. But, at the same time, I don't really give a shit because Dio (anything he has done) does not compare (in my opinion) to the first 6 Sabbath albums with ozzy, who just added to that sound perfectly. Dio is just too power metal-ish, too fairy-land-ish for me........I don't even care for Dio era Sabbath much excluding the song Heaven & Hell (classic, I'll give it that).
Basically, quit being little bitches about whose better, agree to disagree! I'll choose Ozzy anyday, but I don't mind or give a shit if you like Dio better! JUST GET ALONG DAMN IT

A few thoughts here...
I havent heard the CD yet but I am sure that the song Black Rain is nowhere near as good as the Angel Dust song of the same name. Angel Dust rules on Bleed and Enlighten the Darkness.
Also, Ozzy is great but I also prefer Dio nowadays. I was just listening to The Last in Line and remembering what a great song that was.
Also, I thought Ozzmosis was great! It was an awesome CD. Songs like Perry Mason and Tomorrow were all top notch. It was Down to Earth that I thought sucked. After It gets me through I cant remember a single song worth a damn on the CD.
But anyway, I will pick up this CD eventually.

when you think about it, really, Ozzy has always been an "A" level metal god, and Dio is clearly "B" level. It doesn't matter a heap of shit if Dio can sing in a higher register, or if his voice isn't cracking yet. None of that matters. Technical prowess doesn't make one a better artist than another. For instance, would anyone on this posting say that Steve Vai is a better/more important guitarist than, say, Tony Iommi? Sure, Steve Vai can solo cirlces around Iommi, but he can't write a song to save his life...he's never written a truly memorable riff, yet here's Iommi, missing two finger tips, and he writes a boatload of the most memorable riffs in metal history and inspires a countless number of greats that followed him. So yeah, Vai can technically "out-play" Iommi, but Iommi's still the "better" artist. The same can be said of Ozzy and Dio. Dio may have better range and stronger pipes, but Ozzy's voice was always distinctive; it sounded like nobody else, and Ozzy inspired and influenced many to follow him. Dio, while good, never had that kind of status; not q

Ah, he is just trying to please his fans? Hate to tell you but that is precisely what the old man should not be doing. He is merely PANDERING and remaining STAGNANT musically speaking! If the old fart had any ambitions left he would NOT be trying to please his fans! DUH. Second, the bands I named are trying to please the masses LOL obviously you havent listened to them! They are HARDLY trying to please the masses! The bands i listed could easily pander and make music for the masses! They please themselves and try to grow and change istead of remaining stagnant. The facts are plain. Bands like Muttley crap, Kiss(talk about a talentless fucking band. I cannot for the life of me understand why they have existed for so long. But then again every new generations of KIDS LOL not even teenagers discover them. ) AC/DC(jesus christ talk about stangnant!) Ozzy OsBORG , BLack Crappeth ( how many times can you listen to fucking iron man) and Judas Pieceofshit. If you use that worn out argument that longevity is a proof of a band being good, that is absolute bologny. If it shows anything it shows mediocrity and the masses are equivalent! And I dont get this "i respect him" argument. He was a part of good music early in his career so what? That doesn't mean to respect him so much you just causally buy his music no matter how aweful it is! Sounds like zombies engaged in a cult of personality. Bands can be innovative at the beginning of their careers and then become mediocre. And for buzzylarkin. You think because something sells alot MEANS it is a superior product? WTF what world do you live in?????????? Spice girls, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, and even some of these one hit wonder American Idol singers have sold more records then most of the bands talked about on this site. Get your head out of your ass buzzylarkin.

For on every albume the Ozz Man gives it his all! What can I say I give it a 10.
In fact Ozzy sounds better the Dio . That is why the New Sabbath album is not selling . Because when you think of sabbath one mans name comes to mind and that is Ozzy

did Ozzy run over your dog, or something? It's clear that you don't have any respect for the old greats of metal. Ok, I'll grant you this; Kiss really is shit. They always have been. They're barely even heavy rock, so they really don't factor into this conversation, nor does AC/DC, really, because they're just blues-based rock band that got lumped into "metal" because of the "Back in Black" record. As for Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, man, you're just way off base. First of all, all those cool dark, evil, and angry bands on your list would all probably tell you that you're being a douche to slag Ozzy so much, and more so Black Sabbath. You're right; I, for one, really can't listen to Iron Man much anymore, but, if you knew anything about metal, you'd realize that there is an amazing wealth of material that Sabbath released during their glory years besides the songs that are popular. Sabbath paved the way for ALL metal bands and deserve respect, even if you don't necessarily like their music much. Furthermore, you misunderstood my comments about Ozzy making a record for his fans. I believe that the man knows what the majority of his fans enjoy, but that it's also what he enjoys making. Any one of the bands on your list would tell you that they get a lot of artistic satisfaction knowing that their fan base enjoys their albums. This has nothing to do with pandering. Plenty of artists and fans grow together throughout the years. But dude, Ozzy is 60 years old. He's been in the game for, what, 40 years? Do you expect him to be truly cutting edge, or maybe...just maybe hearing him make a quality record in his own style is good enough? You cannot compare apples to oranges. Comparing up and coming young bands to a living legend is stupid, really. I listen to a ton of new music (currently way into The Sword, Torche, Teeth of the Hydra, Lair of the Minotaur, Mastodon, the new Celtic Frost, Intronaut, Gojira, Big Business, etc), but there's always going to be room for the beloved old guys like Ozzy...like Rush (not metal at all, but then again, I don't listen to just metal)...like the Melvins, etc. But whatever man, you really do come across like a close-minded little bitch. I hope you grow up.

People, why is Ozzy better than Dio because he sells more albums? That is about marketing WAYYYYY more than talent or songwriting. They both write good shit for the most part. If you don't like it then fine, but don't present your argument that Ozzy is better because he sells more albums, thats just ignorant.
And the guy who says Steve Vai can't write a riff or song, that is laughable, sorry dude. Steve Vai is a talented writer and player. Iommi is too man thats for sure, but they are not in the same genre. Vai has written many memorable songs but he doesnt have the marketing and exposure Iommi has, ditto for many other good guitar players.
Ozzy and Dio are both legends, lets keep it at that! Lets hope they keep rocking for us.

what are you talking about? Check your history. Ozzy was the first and only vocalist for Black Sabbath until the "Dio era" came along. Originally, they were a sort of jazz/blues hybrid band called "Polka Tulk, and then as we all know, they were called "Earth". Perhaps you're referring to the fact that Ozzy was the last one to join the band, but that's splitting hairs. Nobody has ever suggested that Ozzy was the lone creator of the band, but he was in the band when it was called Earth, so you're off base when you say that Black Sabbath was formed prior to Ozzy. As for Maiden being the greatest all time metal band, that's cute, and we're all entitled to our own opinions, just as long as you know yours is wrong. Haha...seriously, you'd rank Maiden above the classic 70s Sabbath line-up? That's insane to me. I respect Maiden, but frankly, they were never all THAT heavy...they were sort of upbeat and pre-dated "power" metal. But, whatever. Ozzy's solo career has had its ups and downs, but he's been pretty damn successful. You obviously don't like the guy, and that's your right. But Maiden? Friggin' Maiden? Ha ha ha... Sooo cute son.

Well, I was wondering if some Vai fan was going to be offended by my comparison, and here you are. Re-read my comments. I'm not saying that Vai isn't talented, influencial, or whatever. What I AM saying, is that songwriting wasn't his strong point. He was a great "hired gun" kind of guy that played in some good bands (hell, even Zappa used him a bit), but really, tell me...list 5 GREAT songs he's written. Now compare those songs to, say, Iommi's 5 best. See what I mean? The entire comparison was really just to demonstrate that technical superiority on an instrument (or voice) doesn't necessarily make one a better artist (a lot of people have been trying to say that Dio is a "better" singer than Ozzy simply because his voice has more range and capability, etc). Jimmy Page, for instance, was/is always one of the sloppiest guitarists in rock, yet his influence is MASSIVE and cannot be understated...Zeppelin's greatness is monumental. Joe Satriani can play circles around Jimmy Page, yet he will be nothing more than a footnote in the history of rock, and Page will have an entire chapter. Get what I'm saying? As for record sales being the determining factor about the greatness of an artist, I agree fully with you. In my opinion of Ozzy being a better artist than Dio, record sales doesn't factor into my qualifications one bit. Just because Ozzy is hugely more popular than Dio doesnt' make him better than Dio. As I've listed in previous posts, I have other reasons why I think Ozzy is "better".

I bought the last copy at FYE. Actually it was sold out in the first location I went to and I found the last one at another location.
The copy that was there, the one I bought was the "limited edition". I didn't really care to get that one considering the only thing about the edition is you get a chance to get tickets to Ozzfest....which I did not plan on going, and still don't. Anyway when opening the album I got....NOTHING. No liner notes, no band info, NOT A GOD DAMN THING. I'm very disapointed considering I waited 6 years for NOTHING. I'm not sure what the "non-limited edition" looks like. The music is a little "poppy" but I can't seem to get past the fucking packaging. So far DOWN TO EARTH IS BETTER, IT ROCKS MORE. Can someone tell me if I'm missing something with having the limited edition. Thanks.

I agree w/ those that say that Trap Door is the best song on the album. I got chills during the breakdown part. It is the most Sabbath sounding thing he has done while solo. He also breaks out of that monotonous tone he has and puts some inflection into his delivery. The album is good, not great. 6.5-7 sounds about right.

I'm not a huge Vai fan actually but I still think he can write some good songs and has in Alcatrazz, DLR, solo stuff, Whitesnake, etc. He's just a different type of guitarist thats all, and memorable is different for everybody. I think he can write good songs, I think Iommi can write good songs. If you want to compare apples to apples then don't compare Vai to Iommi.

with this stupid Vai vs Iommi debate. Let me once again try to clarify my statement. During this overall discussion of Ozzy, several comments have been made in favour of Dio simply because he is technically a better singer than Ozzy. In other words, he has more vocal talent, ability, range, etc. My comment about Iommi and Vai, then, was simply to illustrate the point that technical proficiency and virtuosity (and I'm NOT saying Dio is, by any means a "virtuoso" simply because he's a better singer than Ozzy) alone does not make one artist better or more influencial than another. It's nice to have those tools, but they must be used with great songwriting, instinct, excellent arrangement, and originality. Ok, so...yes, comparing Vai and Iommi is like comparing apples to oranges in many respects, but I was trying to demonstrate the error in the logic of concluding that Dio is "better" because of his stronger voice. Whether you like Vai or not (and some of you obviously do), my point is that although he's technically a better instrumentalist than Iommi, Iommi's contribution to the world of music (metal) are far more memorable and influencial. I consider the same argument to be true of Ozzy vs. Dio. Dio, while great in many respects, has done nothing near what Ozzy has, and this has nothing to do with album sales, etc. If ALL that Ozzy did was that first original decade of Black Sabbath, even that would be enough--that's how great that period of Sabbath was. None of that would have been possible without Ozzy's distinctive, alluring, eery vocal delivery. His vocal style helped shape that classic Black Sabbath sound. Although the Dio era of Sabbath is decent and has a good number of fans, it simply doesn't truly compare to the overall greatness of the original Sabbath, and a huge part of this is due to Ozzy's greatness as an overall performer, vocalist, and frontman. I think this is the last time I'm going to try to explain it. If anyone here who loves Steve Vai was insulted, I truly apologize. Go in peace.

Add me to the list of metal guys who don't really like Maiden...they were always to "bouncy" and happy sounding for me...too many major chords, and really way too "power metal" sounding for me. They had a few good moments, but their image (those "evil album covers, Eddie, etc) was way more bad-ass than their actual sound. I think, for a lot of us in this particular camp, it also comes down to that screechy, operatic delivery that Dickinson has--you either love it or you don't. There's really no middle ground there. I think Dio (and Halford, really) is, stylistically, closer to Dickinson, and therefore another kind of singer who sort of polarizes fans; you either love that style of high pitched singing, or you don't. I won't claim that either COC nor Down have the legacy that Maiden has (although COC has had a pretty long run so far, and their last album "In the Arms of God" was amazing), but I'd rather listen to either band (even IF Anselmo is a big-mouth ass) any day over Maiden.

He still has some cheese factor, but it is far reduced compared to the cheese factor of Dio or Dickinson. And also, if ozzy isn't gonna make something with Black Sabbath again he should just retire. I thought Ozzy might be tempted to retire a few years ago. When I last saw him at OzzFest 2004 he looked like he was barely alive (don't get me wrong, I love the guy, but he had the ATV accident only a few months before).
He sounds surprisingly refreshed on this album and Zakk Wylde has quite a few outstanding moments which help put extra energy into a number of songs. Overall, for a 59 year old, Ozzy still has relevance. ~8~

MUCH better than Down To Earth (which i liked). a couple of meh songs on there. nothing horrible. it's oddly enough a really heavy album for Ozzy. maybe a little too heavy for Ozzy. Zakk's been playing the same guitar solos for about 7 or 8 years now so the lead guitar is boring on this album. you can sit through at least the first half of the album without not wanting to change tracks. i say pick it up. i actually only picked it up originally because i liked the first single and i wanted the code to get Ozzfest tickets and i was pleasantly surprised by a good, solid, heavy album.

If anyone here is seriously sticking up for $haroun you are fucking retards, PERIOD. I was at most Ozzfest dates as I was touring with one of the second stage bands. Believe me Bruce never said shit about ozzy osbourne. The only thing he said was he would talk shit about reality tv shows and mtv. He never EVER one time said a fuckin thing with Ozzy's name in it. Bruce has been talking shit on MTV and mainstream corporate America (which is what Ozzy happens to be) for the past 20 years. He is not going to change because he is on Ozzfest. Yes Maiden made money to play that tour, as they should, because they were the only band the metal fans came to see and is why that tour Sold out every night. Maiden never even wanted to do Ozzfest in the first place but $haron knew it would bring huge crowds and make her a ton of money. I was there that night in San Bernadino and know everything she did from the eggs to pulling the power out. No excuse. Black Sabbath are originators of Metal, Iron Maiden just is better simply because they are STILL going strong, STILL have the best live show of any metal band and STILL put out QUALITY records. Can't say the same about Ozzy or Sabbath

I know it's not realistic, but for an argument sake, having Steve Vai on the new Ozzy album (instead of Zakk Wylde) - that would be a combination that would make me be interested in buying a new Ozzy album. Steve Vai vocals are dreadful (on his solo albums), but if he'd write some music and perform with Ozzy as a guitarist/back-up vocalist - that would be a very fresh collaboration indeed. :)

Cliched lyrics. Generic riffs. Involvement of Zakk Wylde. The only redeeming quality of this record is that it doesn't run too long.

fuck off yet again your no a sabbath fan. love dio and ozzy or shut the hell up. Also COC, Down, AIC, Pantera??? Better than Maiden!!! No way those bands have 2 good albums at most and don't tend to have their own sound (well some of them) Further more as if NSD and TE are better than 80's and 2000's Iron Maiden album. Metallica yet again I don't listen to country so I wouldn't know. Priest fair enough but they are equals in my eyes forming the trinity of the greatest Heavy Metal bands
Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest (With Sabbath first and Priest and maiden joint second).

I believe Iron Maiden is much better and unique than Judas Priest. Also Iron Maiden has some of the best musicians in metal history. None the less I do love Sabbath, Priest, and Maiden. I love all metal. Pantera ruled the 90's hands down. But they are different than Priest, Sabbath, Maiden etc. They are heavier and just flat out a different style of music. Dimebag is one of the best metal guitarists of all time, and Phil Anselmo in his prime is one of the best front men. All great bands. Ozzy Solo shit doesn't even come close to any of these bands

So this album is a 7 and Megadeth's United Abom. was a 7.5 !!! What a complete joke, Black Rain is almost 100% unlistenable garbage and like Ozzy (his early solo stuff and Sabbath mostly) and Black Label Society I just can't stomach this album.... if this is 7 Megadeth's new one should be an 11!!!!
That said, Ozzy is a metal god but I call him the way I hear him.

This album is solid. Ozzy's voice sounds better than it has in years. The riffs kick ass, solid production. It sounds like a slightly updated version of his last three albums, which I liked all of as well. Black Rain and Almighty Dollar are great songs. Not Going Away and Don't Wanna Stop rock hard. Oh well, to each their own.

I've heard worse. If half of you would pull your head out of your ass, you'd admit you had too. I really hoped for a little better.. though in my heart of hearts I knew it wouldn't be. As for Dio vs. Ozzy... you can't really compare the two. Both have had good careers, but the talent that has surrounded them really defined their work. I wish Zakk would come up with something a little more original, yes.. the pinch harmonics are gettin' a little old, but he's still a kickass guitarist. Like previous reviews have said, Trap Door is a catchy song, and I Don't Wanna Stop isn't too bad either. Seemed like to me that almost every song was about a minute too long, though.. they could have stopped at 3:30 on most of them and added 2 or 3 more tracks for a better quality album. Lay Your World On Me isn't bad either, if you're into ballads. Overall, 6/10. God bless Ozzy, and you should be ashamed of yourself if you don't appreciate what this man has done for music.

I gave it a 7. The album's ok, but the vocals are complete shit. They're so processed he could have mono-toned the whole thing and it would have sounded the same in the end. I'd have more respect if he just sang like a singer and not a pop-star, with all this electroninc bullshit, even if it didn't sound quite as good.

This album is boring. It sounds about as retarded as a Rob Zombie album. Zakk Wylde should be erased from every cover of every guitar magazine ever for this crap. It would seem he's holding back riffs from Ozzy. Except the BLS albums are just as boring. Ozzy holds back from delivering on the Sabbath album, and then turns in this half assed crap? Whats this world coming to? First Iron Maiden delivers a bomb & now Ozzy. I think Bin Laden is behind it.

Eddie Van Halen is better than Zakk Wylde. And that drummer with the dread locks can't do the double bass like Lars Ulrich can. Ozzy sounds bored on the second song. The bass playing by James Lamenzo is not good. James needs to focus on Megadeth. This is a good record but Zakk has really become a bad guitar player. All he does is the pentatonic scale. If you want a good singler to replace Ozzy in this band, sign up Steven Pearcy.

I sure hope you are not talking about the latest Iron Maiden record "A Matter of Life and Death" being a "bomb" That is the best Maiden album since 7th Son. And is an epic album. Was top 10 usa billboard and number 1 around the world in many countries. And all this with ZERO mtv, little to NO radio, and no $haron Osbourne going on every talk show to try and pimp it out.

While I'm glad to hear new Ozzy music, this is a bland retread of No More Tears.
Mike Bordin and Blasko are what make this album. Zakk Wylde sounds like he's phoned in his work. Ozzy tries his best, but the lyrics are weak as hell.
Having said that I Don't Wanna Stop, Black Rain and Lay Your World on Me are good. Even though I've heard better versions (Crazy Train, No More Tears and Mama I'm Coming Home).

Does Ozzy actually has anything to do with this album ? I pretty much doubt it. This record is Pro Tool edited to death and the effects on Ozzy's voice are such that it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Like Down To Earth, this sounds so unorganic to a point when you began to wonder if actual musicians where used during the er, recording process. Embarassing.

Actually I did mean that A matter Of Life & Death was a bomb. The only good thing was the Album cover. They play on it well but the songs are boring. You may like them. A million people may like them. But it's still boring to me. Boring isn't something one can gage with some sort of meter. And it heavily depends on the individual listening, their likes and dislikes. It's a state of mind the music puts an individual in. Black Rain does that Brilliantly. So does the Maiden album. Although I will say Ozzy's Bonus track Nightmare is the best thing from this latest batch of songs. And it's utterly retarded (Sharon) that song wasn't the first single. Let alone released on the U.S. standard issue. But in the long run that one song still wouldn't have saved the rest of this bland, boring, disapointing album.

I hoped that this album would surprise me. It did... I was surprised it was so awful. I guess that's what happens when you let someone overproduce an album using pro tools. Zakk's guitar tone is awful compared to the BLS stuff. Plus it's buried. Not enough solos either. I listened 3 times and I just don't get it. The three songs released by Sabbath w/Dio are much better IMHO. Iommi>Wylde

Although I've long progressed into Black Metal, it was ozzy in sabbath that started it all, probably not just for me but for many. You can't just down play him for a meager album. Sure his solo albums weren't ever too great since the Randy Rhodes days, but hell its good drinking music anyways.
And about Dio, Dio is nothing, any1 who sings about rainbows; and talks about himself being a rainbow doesn't deserve to be in the ranks of Sabbath anyways.
Still counting down the days Dio goes bald
