DARKEST HOUR took a big step forward with "Undoing Ruin", retaining much of the AT THE GATES-style thrash/death galloping heard on "Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation" and broadening its arrangements to include more melody and an expansive sound thanks to producer Devin Townsend. The result made them, in my opinion, one of the best acts on the Victory roster, and an album that many felt was one of the year's strongest. On "Deliver Us", DARKEST HOUR continues in a manner similar to what is heard on its predecessor, though not quite matching its excellence.

Does that mean that "Deliver Us" is not a worthy follow up? Absolutely not. It is another solid album from the band, even if there are no truly outstanding tracks. While the band has not made the leap forward heard from "Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation" to "Undoing Ruin", the new long player is still a quality affair. Devin Townsend's production once again harnesses the group's power, offering a tight rhythm section sound in which the bass can be heard, and a guitar sound that will be recognizable as distinctly Townsend; not only the riffs and solos, but also the nuances are brought out nicely. Though in a few parts you'll wonder if the sounds/atmospherics created (listen to interlude "The Light at the Edge of the World") come from a keyboard, the act makes it clear in the liner notes that "No keyboards were used on this album".

Several tracks feature the now familiar DARKEST HOUR furious gallop injected with melodic guitar lines, as "Doomsayer (The Beginning of the End)", the very aggressive "Stand and Receive Your Judgment", and "Fire in the Skies" demonstrate. The melodies are there, but not in a way that grabs you by the throat. Rather, it is on "Demon(s)", "Sanctuary", and "Tunguska" (with some well-placed acoustic guitar parts) where the band employees some clean (at times kind of a semi-shout), though not crooning by any stretch, vocals during the choruses, the result enhancing the songs' melodies.

Chances are that if you liked "Undoing Ruin" that you will also like "Deliver Us". I don't find the band's fifth release to have the same impact as "Undoing Ruin", mainly because of the aforementioned lack of stand-out tracks, but that does not mean that it is not a strong effort in its own right. If nothing else, DARKEST HOUR is consistent.

Great on record and absolutely amazing live. Probably my second favorite live band next to Amen.

Of all the At The Gates comparisons I'd like to point out that technically, At The Gates only put out one and a half (Terminal was an EP after all) great albums while DH has now put out four.

Darkest Hour gets better with each record and this album is certainly no exception.

first off, whoever referred to DH as metalcore needs to have his/her head examined.

secondly, whoever claimed that the first 2 ATG releases weren't great is an emofag of the highest order. you're probably 15 years old and have no fucking clue what impact ATG had on death metal (melodic or otherwise).

and last, please, break out a dictionary and learn the differences between there, their and they're... it's fucking killing me when i read this 2nd grade level english bullshit on this board. there should be a spell checker prior to posting anything.

...but At The Gates didn't hit their high point until they released Terminal Spirit Disease and Slaughter Of The Soul. Their first two full lengths as well as the Gardens EP were decent death metal releases but in no way stand up, or even come close to the brilliance of TSD and SOTS.

As for being a 15 year old emofag, I'm actually 29 and I know full well the impact that At The Gates had on death metal but it was with Slaughter Of The Soul, not with With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness or The Red In The Sky Is Ours. Tomas Lindberg's previous band Grotesque had more of an impact on death metal than those two records.

Even you'll agree (or you should) that those two albums or the GOG EP don't hold a candle to Slaughter or TSD. That's the point that I was trying to make.

Besides, without At The Gates and Slaughter Of The Soul, bands like DH wouldn't even exist or if they did, they wouldn't sound how they do today.

^^ they did exactly the same thing last time with the artwork... PD's Terrifyer and DH's Undoing Ruin have the same artist also... both great jobs though - and I'd say pure coincidence.... maybe now they've thought 'Hey PD get good artists to do their stuff, why not get them to do ours?' John Baizley is a great artist though (plus has a class band in Baroness).

New DH record's pretty good... they've got more Dark Tranquillity influence here than At The Gates IMO though. It seems more melacholy. Still thrash it up in most places though - tis a fine record. Not as good IMO as either Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation or So Sedated So Secure.

Is it a rule that one band must be compared to another band? Whenever I read anything on this site about a cd, 90% of the time it's someone comparing the band to another band. I thank the other 10% who actually put up an opinion like 'great melodies', 'nice vocals', 'horrible drums' and such. If you're going to compare a band to an earlier band, it's all pretty much going to get traced back to Bill Haley and the Comets and probably even 20's jazz and ragtime. It's ridiculous to get on here and see Slaughter of the Soul mentioned 1000 times. Seems to me that album only got popular in like the last two years. I never heard anything about it when that first came out. There were much better albums released right around that time, Nirvana's 'In Utero', Tool's 'Undertow', even Alan Jackson's greatest hits.

As for 'Deliver Us', has some really good songs on it. I'm a fan of the first track 'Doomsayer'. Saw them live yesterday, the only new song they played was 'Deliver Us'. This album has the same kind of feel as the last one, same style and everything else, with the exception of some singing in the choruses. Overall I like this one better than 'Undoing Ruin'.

Darkest Hour get far more stick than they deserve. They are a solid band who somewhat unfortunately get thrown into the same bracket as a handful of awful generic metalcore bands.

'Deliver Us' is a solid release. At the moment I think I agree with the general consensus that this a strong release, but not quite as good as 'Undoing Ruin'. I'd say 7 or 8 is a fair rating.

Atrocity213 made a valid point - the first two At The Gates albums are important but it's hard to see how they are 'great' albums, especially compared to what came later. It'll be interesting to know what your idea of 'great' is if that's the case. Actually it won't.

And notdarkane - what if the guy actually knows what he's talking about? Imagine that! Someone on here actually made a reasonable statement based on experience rather than sweeping elitism. Oh no that's not possible, must be Wikipedia. You failed.

after it leaked.

Demon(s) is still weak like 2/3 weeks later, after first hearing it. Aside from that pretty much every song is killer on this record (the interludes continue the flow very well too).

From Stand And Receive Your Judgement, through to Deliver Us, the album goes into hyperdrive (ahaha, ok so held out until now, I honestly tried to not use a Townsend-pun!).

I would say Stand And Receive Your Judgement is the heaviest song, and mimicks in its thrashy-ness and album position that of "Low" from Undoing Ruin.

Tunguska has an excellent all-rounded feel to it; great intro and circularity to the structure of the rhythms and melodies.

The solos are simply fucking nuts. Dying_Fetus, you are clearly an untalented twerp with no idea.

Go have a wank, at least you know how to do that, right?

My favourites would have to be Fire in the Skies, and A Paradox with Flies. I think these songs really are showpieces for the band's progression.

Noteably: vocals, stucture, elegance of melodies and sophistication of solos, the tighter drumming, and excellent use of samples to flesh out the empty noise.

Perhaps on Full Imperial Collapse the band struggles a bit to convince, Henry is pushing the lyrics a bit too hard, and even though the song is suitably direct (a-la punk), it fails to deliver an appropriately raw and believable intensity. Still heavy and still nasty-brutal ;)

Yes, sometimes the sample-strewn segments don't quite work live, but I must have seen them 12+ times since before '00, the band simply does not fail to excite and inspire.

I've listened to DH since So Sedated, So Secure.
Hidden Hands.. was probably as brutal and straight forward they could get using the modern thrash formula.

Since their partnership with Townsend, technically they have stepped up a gear and the melodies have really matured and it seems Norris and co. have really honed in on how to stir the soul with the trade-mark melancholic melodies, thrash aggression and simply beautiful and well-tempered sounds.

Do not judge this album on the "made for myspace" song that is Demon(s).

A solid 8.5 or 9.

Yes the clean vocals sounded really out of place at first but as you give the disc more and more spins they sound good. They also don't sound gay and emo like machine head or as i lay dying. This cd definately contains their best solos and the songwriting has really improved. Full Imperial Collapse is fucking hard! It's a real mature sounding record. BUY IT.
