It takes balls the size of church bells to refer to your own band as the "evil BEATLES." To actually back that statement up, and then some, requires the kind of talent that comes down the pike once, maybe twice a decade, if we're lucky. BIGELF backs it up, and then some, on an album that distills an entire decade into one potent, heady brew of psychedelic power pop, proto-metal, arena rock and heavy riff bashing.

When I say the entire decade of the 1970s, I mean it — the opening track is a better "Sabotage"-era BLACK SABBATH song than you could possibly imagine. "Bats In the Belfry" manages to capture both Roger Waters's claustrophobic eye on the world and break down into a wholly unexpected bit of KING CRIMSON or ELP Moog prog madness at the end (that's the end of part one, mind you, which comes way after part two on the record, which makes perfect sense somehow after you've heard it). Want some T. REX? Check the irony-dripping "Rock and Roll Contract" out. Keep digging, and you'll find little pieces of everything from URIAH HEEP to ELO to BOWIE to CHEAP TRICK to the friggin' BAY CITY ROLLERS, all ground up and reconstituted into a band that's so impossibly retro it not only defies the imagination, but somehow ends up coming off new and fresh.

Of course, such a pastiche will only work if it's done so spectacularly well that every note, every keyboard zizzle and guitar flash, every droll vocal, drips with some authentic madness and enough '70s tight-pants swagger to make you believe that they believe that an extended organ solo or Doctor Who keyboards or a goddamn mellotron can save rock and roll, if not the entire universe. BIGELF perform like their lives depend on it, and there's not a lazy moment to be found on "Hex" — if there's a pre-chorus, they've harmonized it to pieces. If there's a place for a big, organic, analog drum fill to thunder down, then thunder down it does. Their sheer conviction moves the project well out of camp or novelty territory — it's not long till you do believe, and you're wound tightly up in the whole ridiculous rock opera with no hope of escape.

Where has this band been all my life? Cryogenically frozen? BIGELF know more cool things about the 1970's than you could shake a wizard's staff at and they've shoehorned every last one of them into this unbelievable prog/glam/metal/whatever epic. This is massive, amazing rock and roll that, despite its retro vibe, is so far ahead of the curve it almost seems unfair to stack it up against anything else coming out this year. (The sad postscript to that is, of course, that this album's been done and out since 2004 but it's only now that a US label has stepped up to release it.) Speaking of bold statements, here's one: if BIGELF did exist in the heyday of ELO, QUEEN, or "Ziggy Stardust"-era DAVID BOWIE, not only would BIGELF be mentioned in the same breath as those acts… they'd give ‘em a fucking run for their money. They're that good. For Chrissake, don't miss this album.

I've listened to this album a few times now and I have to say that 10 is really pushing it here. This is an alright album. It's very derivative and I think that, in itself, has to be taken into account when reviewing. It may combine influeneces in an original way, but they're still rehasing the same old bong-water rock.

The album is all over the place in terms of style, sound and quality. You may be grooving along to one track and the next is a complete 180 to mellow and boring.

This territory has been explored before -- Galactic Cowboys anyone? It's a decent album, but I can't believe you gave it a 10

Blabbermouth reviewers are such suckers for trendy "retro" bands. The ones that are actually good, like Wolfmother and The Sword, get average reviews (because they are popular I guess?) while boring ripoff shit like Witchcraft and Bigelf get 9.5s and 10s.

I don't even need to explain how bad this band is... just watch the video for "Mad Hatter" on YouTube. They outright plagiarize the vocal melody from Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" right off the bat. The only thing I could think of each time the singer opened his mouth was "we don't need no education...."

So very bad.

And how is Witchcraft and this band 'rip-off shit'?
I bet, for every band you like, Blackened.. I can name 5+ that sound just like em. Because in music, much like everything else.. ideas are borrowed. Just take Jimmy Page and Bert Jansch for example. The list goes on and on.

"And how is Witchcraft and this band 'rip-off shit'?

They are rip-offs because they don't just borrow, they steal. Witchcraft's "Chydle of Fire" uses Green Day's "Fashion Victim" riff at the beginning, and then a *barely* altered "Iron Man" riff at the end. Bigelf, as I mentioned, used the same vocal melody as "Another Brick in the Wall" on "Mad Hatter". And I've only heard a couple songs from both bands... who knows how much more they've "borrowed"? I could almost forgive them if they actually sounded sincere about the music they play, but they both sound bored and fake as hell to my ears.

I'm well aware that everyone borrows things, but if you're gonna do it, at least TRY to improve or change it somehow. If you just mix it together it sounds like a mess, the way those two bands do.

Bigelf is a fine band. Kind of a cross between old Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and a side order of E.L.O. Not sure if it's worth a "10" on Blab though. However, Bergman does have a penchant for the stoner variety. His reviews are predictable and are always in line with his personal preferences. That's why he NEVER gets a chance to review anything of commercial importance (Don Kaye).

b. You're over 21, still pissed off at the world and hate your job and need blast beats and cookie monster vocals to express it.

c. You're not getting laid, never got laid much and think bands like Black Sabbath were 'way overrated'.

d. You think Pantera were a gift from the gods of metal.

e. You're can't figure out why a band like Witchcraft and the Sword are so popular and 20 year old bands like Candlemass (who were cheesy) and St. Vitus never whipped up a crowd.

Bigelf
Hex
10/10 points awarded!
"This is the one" as Ian Paice put it.
Hex is the product of a band's struggle through the dark years. Through all those years when heavy rock bands jumped around stage in loose clothing, and years when even the old bands started loosing the grip of things...
Bigelf have always been special. For me, a fan of the same bands as the guys in Bigelf, it was an interesting thing seeing them live all those years ago. Listening to their first and second record.
Because what does Bigelf have that other so called "retro-bands" don't?
A calendar! They are fully aware that the year isn't 1972; and that's their strength. They take on the rich heritage and pass it on.
Yes, you CAN hear what bands have influenced them, but what band is without influences?
Symphonic, yet simple and minimalistic, heavy, but then again fine, wild, spontaneous, but yet very disciplined.
On their third album, Bigelf have grown into the large, magical elf that they were meant to be!
Find a more dynamic or interesting band out there will you please!
Not to talk about the sound of the production.
This one will really give all those digital-guys a run for their money!

God bless!

If I had a dollar for every time I every time I heard a new band borrow a riff from Carcass (who borrowed from Maiden who borrowed from Priest who borrowed from Sabbath who...) I wouldn't be posting on Blabbermouth. I'd be covered in a pile of naked girls. In Amsterdam. Listening to this record. Seriously, this record approaches old sounds in a novel way. "Rock and Roll Contract" is a wonderful commentary on how shitty the music industry is today. There have been a number of good stoner rock records over the last 15 years, but this really takes it a step further. One influence I hear that no one has mentioned yet is Queen. There's a lot of really cool arrangement which reminds me of that band. If this isn't heavy enough for you, go listen to 1349 or something. I will put this in very simple terms. There will be more chicks going to see Big Elf than any black metal bands. Enjoy your sausage party.

There are very few bands that impress me anymore. I saw this release being rated a "10" and had to investigate. On intial listening to samples, I went to You tube to check them out. There are three vids that I found and the first one I checked out was the "Mad hatter". Instant Pink Floyd recognition. Someone previously mention this and that was dead on. But I started to listen and was very impressed with the vox stylings. I am very eclectic with my music and found that this was pushing alot of buttons for me. Very produced effort. But there is actually good music here. I downloaded the album and have been pleased with everysong. These guys paying tribute to their influences. Every bad does it to some extent. Jimi Hendrix played electric blues. Led Zeppelin influenced by the blues. Eddie Van Halen =Eric Clapton disciple., etc. Only natural for these guys to have their influences flow out. Those being Beatles, Sabbath, Floyd, and I hear fringes of Crimson and ELP also. I am curious to hear how these guys pull this off live. From start to finish very solid album.
Currently spinning in my cd player is the new Exodus, 3IOB, and Cathedral. This Bigelf is definitely in the other end of the spectrum.

I figure I have to subtract 7 points for rock albums and add 4 points for anything heavier than Motorhead...

I will check this out when it makes its rounds to the delete bins.
**************************************************

Bergamann's review are always our misfortune, and here Bergmann makes the strange and bizarre claim that this is a perfect metal album that everyone should have.

Non-sense, strange and bizarre comment. Bergmann really perpatrated a fraud here, saying Big Elf's album is a classic one. You know that is not the case here. Keith Bergmann is our misfortune and has been for years now. Everything he rating is usually off by 7 points for rock albums to high, and missed metal ones by 4-7 points to low. So considering not what was said, but who said it Keith Bergmann this CD rated at a 10/10 should be considered a 3 out of 10, untill proven otherwise by actual metal websites !!!!

I love the album, but nobody mentioned that this is a reissue of an album from 2003.

Lay off of Keith. He's listened to more heavy bands than all of you combined. He's just offering his opinion. Nobody forced you to read his thoughts.

BIGELF doesn't want to be famous they just want to rule the world lol. It's the way it should be. They have hard hitting riffs and a singer that could bring down a mountain if he wanted to. They are terrific musicians and a great bunch of guy's.

This band is one everyone should jam, and this album is one everyone should own. Too bad for most people, they are not aware of the genius of this band. It should be a requirement to listen to this album if you consider yourself a fan of rock n roll

from an avid keyboardists point of view, it is really great to hear a modern band that can pull off a great rock organ. in the past, it was easy to find, now its almost like a lost art. say what you will, but anyone with a hammond and/or mellotron that can really play it is tops in my book.

Bigelf' music equates virtual opium for me without the side effects. I admire the songs I have listened to and the magic of their musical brilliance. Like most peeps I am a fussy pants about music but this band rocks me, sends me to sleep with haunting lullabies, wakes me up with ghoulish nitemares and seduces me back to dreams with the biggest, baddest rock n roll kiss imaginable...

...all this from a bigelf album...

...i guess i must like them or something.

I just heard this album yesterday and being a huge Beatles fan, I really like it! "Evil Beatles" is quite fitting. Catchy songs and a great old school rock sound. Very refreshing.

8/10
